Imagine the scenario.
A train has stopped at the station and a person is getting out of the carriage as you walk towards the door, close to the train. As he gets out, the following situation arises.
He can choose to take the fast route and walk straight along the train. He can choose to go around and let you take the fast route. You can keep going ahead and assume that he'll be polite and go around. Or you can go around assuming he is going to be inconsiderate.
Here is a poor quality diagram that may assist your visual senses imagining such a repugnant event.
train]
train] | \ <- the man i front of the doors choices.
train] | / <- your choices
But here's the problem.
If you both take the route around, then you will meet and apologize to each other id assume and work out a way to get past each other (which, after you **** this up the first time it tends to be easier not to do it again, usually because one person will just stand still after the first time. Well that's what I do.) anyway; the upside is, you both did something nice because you gave space for the other person because you both went around. But you both assumed the other person was going to be inconsiderate. This displays the lack of faith we have in our fellow man, and you would leave such a situation with the knowledge that the man thought you would simply barge forwards and give him no respect. His uninformed opinion of you was set to the default: Very Low.
However if you both take the fast route, assuming the other is going to be nice, then you will have that mildly awkward collision again, and both of you placed faith in each other to do the nice thing. However both of you disappointed the other. You put faith in the other person, only for them to incinerate this respect. He let down your opinion of him, just as you let down his opinion of you likewise. You will both leave the situation having dropped in each others esteems, and both of you marking down each others faith in humanity. You contributed to each others disdain for mankind.
But, what if one of you walks around, and the other takes the bee-line?
Perhaps this is the worst situation of all.
One of you leaves the situation the "betterman" - politely stepping out of the way knowing the person is going to be a ****. This will only lower your opinion of humans because your belief that they will be greedy and walk straight ahead is proved true. Why should they care if they get in your way?
The other person leaves the situation, unwillingly or not contributing to the ignorance, perhaps also the arrogance, that taints mankind. They are the stain. And should they acknowledge the act that has gone down, they would be tormented at the fact another person has in someway shown kindness, and all they did was stomp all over it. They should feel like the lesser person.
This is just an analogy, and it applies in many realms.
So next time you get off the train.
Run away.
