...and yet, I can't bring myself to put them in anything. Being an author is suffering.

This is exactly where I used to be growing up. I could go on for ages with the characters I’ve created.

I guess it’s a matter of having a solid foundation for a story and choosing the characters you think would suit it best. That’s exactly what happened with my current story. I made new characters and added in some of my preexisting characters that fill the narrative
