Awesome! Almost at the 1000 mark. Curious to see how characters like Pauline are doing in the poll, but I'll definitely wait for your write up first. For Mario, I'd prefer for Waluigi, Paper Mario & Geno to be the big ones added in the next game, but I wouldn't be surprised if Walu reprises his AT role and we get playable Pauline. She's in basically every Mario spin-off at this point, so it only makes sense for her to be in the next Smash.

We are finally there.

We have 1,000 votes (exactly right now). I'm going to do one more big write up, except instead of just top fives, you'll be able to see how many votes every single character had.

I never thought getting this many votes was possible. I feared we would fizzle out around 300, let alone the initial 500 goal.

After the write up, I'm going to essentially leave the poll alone. It'll still be open, but I won't actively spread it anymore. If it somehow gets another 500 votes, we could probably get another write up, but I think we've exhausted our resources (without going to 4chan, but that's probably for the best).

Thank you all, this wouldn't be possible without all of you.

Hello there.
Just wanted to say that I have completed the poll, it was fun. Would it be ok if I suggest to add Duna from Fossil Fighters in it?

Anyway, I wish you a good day !

In what way do you mean?
Well, I feel like the timing of game releases can have a lot of sway for the prominence of a character in speculation discourse, and the timing of MM 3DS was probably around Skull Kid's peak of exposure. He missed Smash 4 DLC, but got an Assist trophy, which was a good sign for Ultimate. I honestly thought if he didn't get into Ultimate then he'd missed his shot. He did end up getting a pretty good costume which is an improvement, but Majora's Mask is getting a bit long in the tooth. He's a cult hit character among the Zelda fanbase, but the fact that he's a one-off character and not the main villain hurts his chances of being a Ridley/K. Rool style deep cut, because Metroid and DK genuinely did have villain shaped holes in their rosters. So I was expecting his popularity to decline, even though I know the poll says to vote for what you want without regard to likelihood, people DO tend to vote on what they think makes sense. You can kinda see it with the gap between him and Impa/Midna not being large, but I'm glad he still is the number one Zelda rep. Frankly, if fan demand for a Zelda rep consolidated around one Zelda character, I think that would be enough to really juice their real chances of being included. So him being No 1. still after all this time is a good argument for him being the character people consolidate around.

Basically, I think people's desires for a Smash character don't fully exist in a vacuum and are subconsciously influenced by A) Likelihood and B) if they see other people getting excited about the character and saying it would be a sick inclusion. So Skull Kid winning this poll for Zelda and being something I can show other Smash fans will make them want Skull Kid more and increase discourse around him more, and thus his real chances.

Yet we have to take into account the fact that the poll was not widely spread amongst the Zelda community, for some reason.

Impa is a well deserved 2nd place. I think the results are credible.

Okay guys, this may be the most effort I've ever put into a post on here. The following results are after 1,010 votes. You will receive absolutely everything I have to offer. There will be no more mysteries. You'll see how every character on the poll did.

And of course, what's a Smash Bros discussion without a tier list? Huge lists of names and numbers are visually very boring. So... Here's something to spice up the results. Trust me, you don't want walls of white text. It's very boring.

Red - More than 500
Orange - 400 to 499
Yellow - 300 to 399
Green - 200 to 299
Blue - 100 to 199
Purple - 20 - 99
White - Less than 20

Without further ado...

Waluigi - 512
Paper Mario - 409
Captain Toad - 342
Toad - 331
Geno - 306
Kamek - 235
King Boo - 231

Pauline - 199

Toadette - 178
Fawful - 176
Vivian - 162
Birdo - 155
Professor E. Gadd - 142
Shy Guy - 133
Dry Bowser - 125
Petey Piranha - 118
Nabbit - 112
Dimentio - 101

Mallow - 100
King Bob-omb - 89

Goomba - 72
Wart - 68
Count Bleck - 60
Koopa Troopa - 59
Dry Bones - 54
Goombella - 54
Rabbid Peach - 53
Toadsworth - 53
Baby Mario - 48
Boo - 47
Dr. Luigi - 44
Rabbid Mairo - 44
Midbus - 43
Wiggler - 43
Lady Bow - 42
Antasma - 41
Hammer Bro - 40
Cackletta - 36
Metal Mario - 36
Baby Luigi - 30
Bob-omb - 30
Lakitu - 29
Boom Boom - 27
Monty Mole - 26
Princess Shroob - 24
Koops - 23
Peachette - 23
Blooper - 22
Cappy - 22
Kammy Koopa - 22
Mary O. - 22
Bombette - 20

Polterpup - 20
Prince Peasely - 17
Olivia - 16
Dreambert - 15
Starlow -15
Pom Pom - 14
Goombario - 13
Broque Monsieur - 12
Lubba - 12
Baby Peach - 10
Honey Queen - 10
Plessie - 10
Prince Florian - 10
Baby Rosalina - 9
Olly - 9
Huey - 8
Baby Daisy - 6
Kersti - 6
Perry - 6
Stella - 6
The top five hasn’t changed very much since last time. Toad and Captain Toad have swapped places and Geno is somehow still fifth. Geno’s placement continues to perplex me. I have tried to get this to the Star Road Discord, but the leads I thought I had weren’t very successful. If anyone from there is reading this, please post it there. Or maybe it was posted there already, it's hard to tell with Discord.

As for the others, a lot of the Mario mainstays like Pauline, Nabbit and Kamek are doing pretty well, as are minor villains like Petey Piranha and King Boo. Common enemies were a mixed bag. Some like Shy Guy and Goomba did pretty well. Others like Pom Pom and Monty Mole underperformed.

The RPG characters were either incredibly popular or very unpopular. Of course you have the people on the podium like Geno and Paper Mario, along super popular characters like Dimentio and Vivian. Conversely you have some of the least popular characters like Huey, Olly and Kersti. If you wanted a top five for Mario RPG characters only, it would be Paper Mario, Geno, Fawful, Vivian, and Dimentio in that order.

The worst scoring characters were Baby Daisy, Kersti, Perry and Stella, all with 6 points. Perry makes sense due to just being an umbrella and Stella is pretty new. Kersti is infamously unpopular. And that leaves… Baby Daisy is just unpopular I guess.

Dixie Kong - 596

Winky - 10
Kopter - 8
Hoofer - 4

Donkey Kong had a top five that was exactly the same. No changes in placement, just bigger numbers. So big in fact, that Dixie Kong has taken over as the most popular character in the entire poll. Unsurprisingly, the Kongs scored the best, with Lord Fredrik somehow beating Tiny Kong. There were a few Kremlings with middling results, but the majority of low scoring characters were enemies and animal buddies and enemies. Wrinkly Kong had her grave disrespected by being the lowest scoring Kong.

Hoofer was the lowest scoring Donkey Kong character and one of the lowest scoring characters in general.

Zelda has been a very interesting race to watch. The trio on top have been very dominant, and close to each other. The difference between Skull Kid and Midna is twenty votes. The difference between Midna and Another Form of Ganon is one hundred and four. They are head and shoulders above the rest and if the Zelda fanbase wants a new character, I suggest they rally behind those three and only those three. There are lots of popular Zelda characters, so picking a few to push would be ideal.

3D characters scored much better than 2D characters and the BotW champions performed very well. Wild Saga characters, as a whole, were divisive though. Regular Zelda enemies didn’t garner much attention.

Illia was the least popular character for Zelda. She was somehow beaten by a character from a game that isn’t out yet.

Raven Beak - 424

Noxus - 5
Metroid has a massive drop off. You have the new kids Raven Beak and E.M.M.I. and then Sylux the prodigal son who is finally in a starring role. And then…. There isn’t much demand at all. The drop off after E.M.M.I. is huge. Kraid is the next popular character and after that? A regular Metroid. The majority of characters on this list just aren’t popular. People would rather have SA-X, a X clone of Samus, more than most of the Prime Hunters, human characters and notable aliens in the franchise. Metroid’s lack of characters are really showing here.

MB is no longer the least popular character and I think my teasing may have influenced results. She’s got eleven votes. Draygon and Noxus are now the least popular Metroid characters with five votes each.

Poochy - 284
Yarn Yoshi - 102
Raphael the Raven - 67
Baby Bowser - 58
Stork - 38
Burt the Bashful - 32

Spirit Who Loves Surprises - 23
Roger the Potted Ghost - 21

Blargg - 19
Bumpty - 9
Hongo - 8
Yoshi is a really funny franchise to examine. Poochy is well liked. Yoshi is of course cute, but uh…no one else really did that well. Not even the main villain, Baby Bowser. If Kamek and Shy Guy were Yoshi characters, Poochy would have some competition. I know the placement of those two characters are a sticking point for a lot of people, but there is no winning with those two and their placement. In the end I deferred to Ultimate’s classification. So don’t blame me. Kamek did well regardless.

Hongo the Book Spirit was the least popular Yoshi character. I’m a bit shocked that the Spirit Who Loves Surprises scored as well as he did.

Bandana Waddle Dee - 587
Magolor - 316
Marx - 281
Galacta Knight - 250

Pitch - 16
Chuchu - 15
Nago - 15
Claycia - 11
Elline - 11
Landia - 8
Bandana Waddle Dee has been dethroned as number one. But he still performed exceptionally well. A close second is nothing to scoff at. Kirby characters in general scored really high. Kirby villains in general scored really well. But the spinoff heroes and the animal friends didn’t.

The least popular Kirby character is Landia. And I guess I can understand that. I am not sure how he’d fight exactly.

Krystal - 468
Slippy Toad - 290
Peppy Hare - 181
Andross - 86
Leon Powalski - 86
Panther Caroso - 63
James McCloud - 57
Pigma Dengar - 49
Miyu - 45
Fay - 42
ROB 64 - 41
General Scales - 38
Katt Monroe - 29
General Pepper - 25
Tricky - 25

Bill Grey - 19
Andrew Oinkonny - 16
Amanda - 11
Dash Bowman - 11
Lucy Hare - 9
Team Star Fox continues to be on top. Andross managed to tie with Leon and because of that, Panter got to be on the podium. Star Fox is filled with a lot of minor characters that didn’t perform very well, but Krystal managed to stay in the top ten, and somehow, despite all the odds, Slippy Toad broke into the top 50. I’m amazed.

Command characters scored terribly, with Lucy Hare scoring the least.

Pokemon... Pokemon always changes. Aside from the Trainer being a popular idea, these Pokemon are always in flux. Zoroark managed to keep second, but Decidueye and Meowscarada managed to somehow tie for third. Gengar snuck its way into the top five and human characters are also generally popular.
Clefairy got nearly doubled its score when it was found out that it was planned for the original Smash. That said, Pokemon is expansive. REALLY expansive, so Opossum Opossum has done something cool for us and ranked the top five for every Generation of Pokemon.

Earthbound did pretty decently. Pokey is the most popular by far and Claus managed to pass Ninten. Giygas is also, hilariously, still fifth. No one is close to knocking him off the podium, but Paula is kinda close I guess. I dunno, aside from Claus passing Ninten, I don’t have much to say here.

Wess was the least popular Earthbound character.

The fall off after Samurai Goroh is hilarious. Like, Black Shadow and Samurai Goroh are legitimately very popular, both earning their way into the top fifty. F-Zero isn’t very popular aside from those two. Pico has 69 votes, so that’s hilarious. Pico is the true winner of this poll.

The least popular character was Jack Levin. What gives? I thought he was super popular or something. Was I wrong?

Polar Bear - 217
Topi - 50
Condor - 47
C’mon guys, we’re almost there. I’ve given up hope that the Condor can beat the almighty meme pick that is Polar Bear, but we’ve almost beaten Topi! Topi supports clubbing seals and had to be redesigned in western regions. That’s not cool. Condor would never do that. This message was sponsored by Condor for second place.

The least popular pick was… unfortunately Condor…

The Fire Emblem top five was VERY contentious. No one ever got close to taking Lyn’s number one spot. But Tiki was very close to overtaking Black Knight. What’s really interesting is what happened when the Fire Emblem Reddit got a hold of the poll. Most popular characters kept getting votes. Anna stopped getting votes. So Alear soared ahead and Edelgard overtook Anna. It seems Anna isn’t that popular of a choice among Fire Emblem fans. I think they’d prefer main characters. In fact, main characters reigned supreme and the only minor characters that performed well were Anna and Gatekeeper. That funny man still pops up after all this time. Heroes characters didn’t perform well, although Alfonse and Fjorm did pretty well all things considered. FE Villains aside from Black Knight (and Edelgard) also performed terribly.

The least popular Fire Emblem character was Rowan from Fire Emblem Warriors.

Orcos - 6
These results are kind of inspiring. Somehow, three Kid Icarus characters made it into the top twenty. When this happened the first time, I thought it was a Smashboards bias. Smashboards is usually more keen on characters and franchises often derided as lame. Kid Icarus got so much hate during the Smash 4 period and Dark Pit is still sometimes treated as a pariah (often unfairly). The Kid Icarus love was inspiring to see. Heck, it turned me into a more confident supporter. I’ve always liked Viridi, Hades and Medusa. And I love Pit, Palutena and Dark Pit! Kid Icarus is awesome! HECK YEAH!

Orcos was the least popular character. Considering he’s from the Game Boy game, it's not a huge surprise. That game is ignored most of the time.

Well, well, well. Ashley is the sixth most popular character. Considering some of the old controversy surrounding her, maybe this is a sign (Do not send kids to you know where). Captain Syrup is still maintaining her strong second placement. In fact, she’s the only Wario Land character anyone really cares about. The drop off to Shake King, the next Wario Land character, is huge. Wario Ware is definitely more popular overall and with how strong its cast is, I can’t blame ya’ll.

Golden Diva was the least popular Wario character. This makes sense. She is uhhhhhhhgly.

Russ - 8

Oatchi and Louie are sitting comfortably at the top. I suspect that most of the Pikmin 4 Protagonist support is tied to desire for Oatchi. Aside from those two, Pikmin support isn’t very strong. There is a notable support for the Pikmin enemies though. And wow, the Pikmin 4 Rescue Core are NOT popular at all, at least for Smash. Shepherd is the only NPC crew member to get any real attention.

Russ was the least popular Pikmin choice. Science has fallen.

Professor Hector - 138
Smick - 31
Professor Vector - 26
Okay, so I fixed my mistake. Professor Hector isn’t the only R.O.B. character anymore. But like… he seems to be the only one people care about. I don’t have much to say here. There’s poor performance overall. Smick is a funny name though.

Professor Vector was the least popular choice here.

Animal Crossing is probably the funniest list here. It’s extremely lopsided. On one hand, Tom Nook managed to be the fifth most popular character in the entire poll. K.K. Slider and Mr. Resetti did well too. But then, after that… It’s a gigantic drop off. Like Ankah and Kapp’n couldn’t even break 100. Most characters couldn’t even break past twenty votes. Major NPC characters did much better than most regular villagers. In fact, I tried really hard to include popular villagers because I thought some would do well. They didn’t. Well aside from Ankah, and I don’t know how to feel about that. It’s not that Animal Crossing characters aren’t wanted. It’s just that people want particular Animal Crossing characters. Honestly… the poll results are kind of exciting. I kind of want to try Animal Crossing again.

Franklin and Saharah have the lowest scores in the entire poll. They are tied with Flow from Splatoon. RIP bozos.

Wii Balance Board - 220
Wii Fit Dog - 149
The dog did not win. This is only counterbalanced by the fact that Oatchi won Pikmin’s poll. Dogs find a way. Dogs find a way.

The Wii Fit Dog… sigh was the least popular Wii Fit character.

Punch Out!! actually had a shake up. King Hippo got knocked out by Mr. Sandman, making this placement slightly canonical. Doc Louis still holds the champion’s belt though. The Super Punch Out characters are hilariously unpopular with every single one being as low as possible. Punch Out!! support as a whole isn’t super strong, but Doc did manage to break into the top fifty.

The least popular Punch Out!! character was Rick Bruiser. Not Nick Bruiser. See, this placement is how you can tell them apart.

Daww… this one just gets cuter. Canon couple Mio and Noah are still next to each other in votes. They’re so close in fact, that both of them managed to be right next to each other in the overall polling. As for the rest, there wasn’t much change. Aside from Elma, Xenoblade X characters are not popular at all. Shame. Aside from Riki, the nopons didn’t do too well either. Xenoblade fans definitely want the main characters all right.

The least popular Xenoblade character was Gwin from Xenoblade Chronicles X. I don’t know how to feel about this. He’s not bad. Just boring I guess. I dunno, I like the X cast more than most, so I’m a little salty.

Octoling is incredibly dominant being in the top ten most wanted character overall. The idols had a bit of a shake up. Marina is still the most popular one by far, but Callie, Marie, Pearl and Big Man are all in super competitive spots. Shiver and Frye unfortunately didn’t even break 100. And then there’s an even bigger drop off. I thought people liked the shopkeepers. They were wildly unpopular. The plot important Sheldon didn’t do well, and GNARLY EDDIE ONLY GOT SIX VOTES! How can this be? His name is worth fifty votes alone!

Flow is tied with Sahara and Frankling for the lowest score in the entire poll.. RIP bozos.

Ninjara got his revenge! He fought tooth and nail to get past Max Brass. No one has touched Twintelle’s first place, but Spring Man has come close at times. Aside from those two, ARMS characters have a lot of middling and low placements. Poor Misango.

Biff was the lowest ARMS character. Considering he’s the only NPC, this makes sense.

This list takes up four pages in my Google Docs, btw. This list is huge and is filled with a lot of low placements. As for the characters who did well, Isaac is a no brainer when it comes to popularity, being in the top ten overall. I’m continually surprised at how Chibi-Robo is doing. I never thought he’d ever be this popular. Andy and Ayumi seem to be coasting on remake/new entry hype. For real, I never would have expected Ayumi to do this well, this long. I wonder if the timing of this poll affected the results. If we did this one year from now, would Ayumi fall? Andy is at least understood to be fairly popular in his own right. Officer Howard managed to bump Starfy off the podium. Karate Joe and Chorus Kids continue to be neck and neck. Ring Fit Trainee continues to perform worse than I expected. As an American, I am proud that Abraham Lincoln from Codename S.T.E.A.M. did as well as he did. He seemed to be the big meme vote out of this section.

Li’l Blue from Chee-Chai Alien was the least popular character from a new franchise. Poor Li’l Blue. Even characters added halfway beat them.

Yeah, people still don't want these. People are more likely to want a new Game & Watch character but overall, nothing doing.

I know the visual only shows the top twenty one, but I just had to give you a top fifty too. Honestly, this is a pretty interesting top fifty. There are a huge variety of series on display here. No one franchise dominated the poll and I think that’s amazing. In fact, the only franchises that didn’t manage to make it to the top fifty were Ice Climber, Wii Fit, and R.O.B. Those three franchises are widely considered to be complete already, so its nice to see even lowkey franchises like Yoshi, Pikmin, Punch Out!! and ARMS have fans show what they want. We seem to have a distinct Elite Four again. Dixie Kong, Bandana Waddle Dee, Funky Kong and Waluigi are the only characters to break 500 votes so far.

Also Slippy Toad made it this far, and that’s both amazing AND hilarious.

And because I know people will ask this… How many from each franchise made it to the top fifty?

Super Mario: 5
Donkey Kong: 3
The Legend of Zelda :4
Metroid : 2
Yoshi: 1
Kirby : 5
Star Fox : 2
Pokemon : 1
Earthbound : 2
F-Zero : 2
Ice Climber : 0
Fire Emblem : 2
Kid Icarus: 3
Wario Ware / Wario Land : 2
Pikmin : 2
R.O.B. : 0
Animal Crossing : 2
Wii Fit : 0
Punch Out!! : 1
Xenoblade Chronicles : 3
Splatoon : 1
ARMS: 1
New Franchises : 6
So uh... I forgot to add Alice from Balloon Kid. Sorry. But other than that, there weren't any other notable omissions. There were a few suggestions here and there, but they were usually Pokemon.

I guess I missed some notable Kirby enemies like Sir Kibble and Poppy Bros Jr. but considering I did put some Kirby enemies in there, I don't feel too bad. This went much better.

...

I'll add Alice right now... She is on the poll from here on out.

Now, interestingly Hotel Dusk (Its used for all the CING games like Another Code), got back to me as I was writing this up. They would like the poll. Perhaps I should send the poll their way afterwards.

I tried to spread this poll to as many subreddits as possible, but when polls are often autobanned by moderation, I must ask for permission.

Also, oddly enough, Casual Nintendo wasn't very receptive to the poll, while the more franchise focused subreddits loved it. Xenoblade, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Fire Emblem and Kirby ate this poll up.
Well... I'm not sure.

I know I had to close the poll down but... now that its open again, its still getting votes. And with the Hotel Dusk subreddit wanting it now... I'm hesitant to just shut it down. The nice thing about this poll is that I can continually add to it. So I suppose I have no real reason to shut it down. The poll will continue, and who knows, maybe it'll become super popular with a new announcement or something. The data we have isn't going to become unusable after all. Continually adding to it will be useful.

I could spread it farther and farther. We never tried Tumblr or Facebook. I admittedly don't know how Tumblr works and I don't want to use my personal Facebook for something like this. Youtube... would be hard. I'd need to find a Youtuber with a big enough crowd willing to spread this thing.
There's also websites like Tik Tok and 4chan. We'd probably get more votes, but perhaps going to those websites is more trouble than its worth.
I'd be excluding something by not saying that I've been trying to get this into the Geno discord, as I feel he's underperforming, but my feelings on him underperforming are a hunch, and I can't actually prove it hasn't gotten there already.

There's also future polling to discuss. I've been racking my brain on how to do the third party poll and... wow that seems hard. I'm going to take a break on making a poll for a while, and I'll slowly start making it on my own time, but that was a daunting task. Nintendo has a limit. Third parties don't.

And so... I'll ask you. Should I focus on spreading this poll even farther? Should I focus on the third party poll? Should I let it stew for a while? I'm alright with being done with this poll, but I thought I'd turn it to the community here.

And hey, I have to give the biggest thank yous to Opossum Opossum and Nukellavee (doesn't have an account here anymore). Opossum helped tally the Pokemon and New Franchise numbers after I accidentally made them too big for Google Forms to track. They also helped discuss formatting issues. Nukellavee is the one who made these wonderful visuals for them all. They're both very talented individuals.

And of course, thank you to everyone who took part in this poll.

I would be happy if this poll were to continue, though I am not quite sure how to spread it even further than it already has. There is a pretty good chance it would naturally see more activity if Smash seemed to be on the horizon or had a shocking sudden appearance, but that may be years from now.

Making a third party poll would be an absolute nightmare(For a number of reasons), though it has the potential to bear interesting info. Not something to rush into though. The easier option for a potential new poll would be one for the veterans, though I am not sure how much interest that topic would have in comparison to polls about newcomers.

Hades - 381

Super Mario: 4

I assume you've already spoken to SourceGaming about this poll?

I am starting to think I should have suggested including Taro aka the FDC protagonist as a missing character. especially as both auymi and emio are on it

"two dk characters in the top 3"
This shows more hardcore folks want more supporting characters; and Donkey Kong is King among them.

Isaac, Paper Mario, Chibi-Robo, Mio and Noah are the only Top 25 lead characters in their games / franchise; 3 are in the late teens.

Andy making it this far is great, considering his franchise is... well, kinda cursed.

And maybe I'm just a big weirdo, but seeing the Arcade Bunny and Nikki from Swapnote right next to each other makes me happy for some reason. I dunno, I guess I just associate them with each other.

Also yay Toad and Tom Nook :)

Nook Nation… we are winning so hard.

But for real, nearly half of all voters voiced support for Tom Nook. That’s incredibly encouraging. I’m certain he benefits from this poll being so open ended, but it should make it clear to everyone that the prospect of a third Animal Crossing character isn’t as controversial as some fans make it out to be. At worst it’s a healthy showing of casual support and acceptance, and at best he’s literally one of the most popular first parties.

As for other favorite characters of mine, they did okay. I’m a bit underwhelmed at the showing for Rhythm Heaven but two characters cracking 200 isn’t so bad, and it probably would have cracked Top 5 with a more unanimous solution. Karate Joe just narrowly inking past Chorus Kids has me a bit frustrated though. We had it right the first time!

Very impressive work Swamp and Opossum! Not really sure how to best tackle such a big dataset, it might take a while to fully internalize it in speculation but it’s a good tool. Personally I’m very hyped to see some personal favorites like Nabbit, Off the Hook and Master Kohga make it relatively big, though Nabbit and Kohga are not exactly frontrunners. Feeling very “celebrating wildly for a 7th place-meme” here. Will edit later with proper full thoughts but that’s the gist.

yeah it's funny how there's all these things the smash fandom takes as fact but a poll like this sort of disproves it

Hey, at least you suggested someone who at least SEEMS like they have a chance. Of course, it's my fault for not suggesting her sooner, but I had suggested Naomi Moriha from Jet Impulse just before the votes were being tallied.

Let the first party poll simmer for a while. Maybe you could convince some big Smash names like MockRock or PJiggles to spread the word on YouTube, wouldn't hurt to shoot em an email asking if they could spread it. Worst thing they could say is no. Maybe if it gets to 2,000 votes you could update the write-up again, but for now I'd say just rest easy on it, you've done so much for us already.

As for the 3rd party poll, I think the best way to go about it would be to structure the first half similarly to this poll, going in order of 3rd party series already in Smash with playable characters.

Then, have a section for 3rd parties that are in Smash in some form but not with a playable character (Doom, Undertale, Shantae, etc).
Handy list for reference: https://www.ssbwiki.com/List_of_minor_third-party_universes

Then have a section for 3rd parties with currently zero Smash presence as of now.... but since there are so many of them, I'd say structure is as a fill-in-your-own response thing. Have the users fill in their own top 10 wants (or less if they don't have ten candidates in mind).

that’s the thing though I didn’t suggest him but I wish I had. Despite only ayumi appearing in smash he’s still the face of the series

I suppose I could try to branch out to YouTube, but I really don't know how I'd even approach that.

Oh, I see. You know, while I WOULD like Ayumi in Smash, I do wonder why Taro isn't spoken about that much. I mean, Sakurai straight-up mentioning Ayumi certainly helped her, but Taro IS front-and-center on most Detective Club boxart.

You know, I wonder if Yuka would have gotten a bit more support if people were aware of this Smash mod in development for her...

And believe me, this person's Yuka mod has a LOT of alt. skins in mind for her (many of which HAVE been modeled, btw). Like, check their account and you'll definitely be reminded that Yuka is probably one of Nintendo's biggest fashionistas.

I think it probably is cause sakurai mentioned her specifically

Ayumi definitely gets the bump from her history with Smash already / Sakurai’s mention, but I also think that sort of mascot appeal goes a long way with VNs in particular. If you look up the “protagonist” of Tokimeki Memorial you will be greeted with a picture of Shiori, not the player character. For Danganronpa, most people will discuss Monokuma first. In Type Moon’s own fighting game, it’s Arcueid who takes center stage over Shiki.

Phoenix Wright seems to be someone who transcends this, but that’s definitely in no small part due to how dynamic his own game allows him to be. A number of VN avatars / protagonists aren’t associated with much past being the vessel to experience the game through. So I think it makes sense that Ayumi is the one that caught on even beyond the obvious incitement of support from Melee.

Taro does have a bit more personality I feel. No where near as much as Phoenix. But you certainly have a point

As promised, some more thoughts I have on the poll. Not sure if my opinion holds any weight or why you should care about which characters I felt got underrated or which results I think are interesting, but it might inspire other people to do the same and might be a good starting point for a discussion. I think the best way to structure this is to say which characters I feel got underrated, which ones got overrated or I’m positively surprised by and how my votes/my favorites fared. Not gonna mention all the series because some picks sort of speak for themselves. I also forgot why I started making this post in the first place ’cause a lot of it is surface level observations. Ah well, the fallacy sunks as it costs.

So, starting with Mario, I think Geno being only the fifth most demanded character when demand is what keeps him afloat is funny. His support might be more intense, but Waluigi fans have been matching that cult-like status the Geno fanbase’s energy lately and Paper Mario fans could work together rather than fighting about the home series. The difference between Geno and Waluigi (and to a lesser extent Paper Mario) is staggering too and I wonder how this cursed relic of Brawl speculation past is going to gaslight its way into the perceived popular frontrunner spot again. In Ultimate it did so by just waiting a long time to be deconfirmed, when characters like Skull Kid, Ashley and Krystal were long left in the dust of base game roles.

Dark horses Kamek and King Boo aren’t just dark horse picks anymore, coming in over oft-speculated characters like Pauline. Pauline’s performance is interesting since she‘s seen as dark horse fan favorite, but the demand isn’t really apparent from this poll. As for my own contrarian tastes, Toadette and Nabbit score decently high, with Toadette being on the cusp of dark horse status (though her demand is a byproduct of the Toad demand first and foremost, I imagine). I promise Nabbit is fun, but I can understand he’s not exactly next in line right now.

DK is not too surprising, though Funky rounding out the DKTF quartet rather than Cranky Kong is radical, to say the least, but hey, it’s Funky Kong. Metroid ditto, with Raven Beak ruling rule-of-cool. I have no dark horse personal faves from either of those series.

Zelda is interesting, Midna’s high placement especially. I know Midna is incredibly popular as a character, but that hasn’t really translated itself into a Smash speculation fanbase in the same vein that Skull Kid has managed to stay in the conversation thanks to leaks. Tingle falling off in lieu of less speculated fan faves like Tetra or Ghirahim is interesting but no surprise, but Tingle does manage to stay into the speculation conversation disproportionately due to being a recurring character. The Wild saga‘s frontrunner being Urbosa is surprising considering it should be Kohga when I always felt Sidon was the more popular character. Might be my own circles being more male-oriented or a question of perceived moveset potential. As far as personal faves go, Kohga scored surprisingly high, but Beedle falling to the middle of the pack is disheartening when I think he could be a neat dark horse mention for the “recurring Zelda characters” category. I can’t believe I forgot to mention my boy Kilton in the missing character section.

Star Fox has Krystal still going strong so long after her Assist Trophy promotion: In general the poll showed that characters that were absent from speculation due to their base game role are back in the game, like the aforementioned Ashley and Skull Kid. Slippy Toad going from dark horse to legit contender is sweet and encouraged by me personally.

Pokémon has a lot going on, but I don’t really care for any of that. May the best relevant non-starter win. Zacian not making the cut is sad. One of my write-in votes went to Fletchling, so I’m taking the chance to do some propaganda for a regional bird Pokémon here. They’re staples!

Fire Emblem comes as a shock to me. Black Knight in second, Tiki in third and Anna kicked out of the top 5 is very interesting, though Lyn is probably the only one of these that might break into that Skull Kid-esque status as specifically rooted for and requested once push comes to shove, with the others garnering more general appeal. Edelgard going toe-to-toe with the expected Alear warms my heart.

Kid Icarus shows that a loveable cast of characters can get you a long way, even if your series is on life-support. Three characters in the top 20 is great, and I did personally toss Viridi a vote on what’s essentially just vibes and my embarrassing fan fiction that has been a WIP for four years now. Kid Icarus scores higher than series like Pikmin, which shows that people aren’t just picking characters from each series out of obligation. The order is surprising, but more votes for Viridi is fine by me, I just figured Medusa would be the more popular character after Hades. Maybe CCC (Codex Completion Compulsion) got to people. I know I definitely warmed up to Viridi after watching her rattle off all the Piranha Plants.

ARMS sadly does not get extended the same good-vibes-courtesy, despite Dr. Coyle passing a lot of vibe checks for me. Probably because Min Min…plays like she does.

Wario is really Ashley or bust. It’s not just the passion/intensity of the fanbase itself or the weird impulse of importance she got from the Nintendo Badge Arcade way back in the 3DS days that made her stand out over her WarioWare peers, but her appeal towards the general populace is apparently greater as well.

Pikmin has come into the general conciousness and not just with the flashy marketable plushie called Oatchi: Long-time second-hand Louie has almost the same amount of votes, possibly because people see that Pikmin deserves a second character. More awareness for Pikmin in speculation I can only applaud and encourage, same with the next two series in Animal Crossing and Splatoon.

Animal Crossing is home to my lowest-scoring character I threw in a vote for in Daisy-Mae. Yes, partially I felt obligated to vote for a character with the name Daisy, but I also feel the Stalk Market was one of the more salient aspects of New Horizons and weirdly suitable for a fighting game set. Fans of the series can explain why more votes for Animal Crossing characters is good, I personally acknowledge the importance and deservedness of it all and reserve my right to not really care about the characters beyond that.

Splatoon I regret saving for almost-last for this write-up, because I genuinely love this series and as one of the few proponents of Off the Hook back in Smash Ultimate‘s DLC phase I feel vindicated, although Marina making it on her own instead of in a tag team is a weird development, to say the least. Octoling, as I completely understand, tops the poll for being the most likely/easy clone/most prominent, but I hope this does not result in a Bandana Dee-esque chokehold on series speculation where the energy for a new Splatoon character starts and ends at Octoling. The results being so disjointed beyond Octoling (breaking up Marina and Pearl smh) does not bode well, and on a personal note am sad to see Cap’n Cuttlefish not join the top 10 when he‘s just as important to the series as the vastly more speculation-ingrained DJ Octavio.

New Series is too much to make sense of right now, though I wonder about the overlap between Karate Joe and Chorus Kids (and other Rhythm
Heaven characters). I personally didn’t vote for Karate Joe, but did vote for Chorus Kids, so I wonder if the Rhythm Heaven series has an even greater potential than is visible now. Chibi Robo seems to survive beyond its battery life, which is neat to see.

Generally, it will be interesting to see how much of these results are based on general, silent majority appeal and which ones of these will have cutthroat speculation support groups formed around them. Good to see the fanbases of yore are still ready to go and didn’t get outclassed by the fresh new thing over time, with emerging bandwagons like Pauline underperforming and a lot of classic speculation fanbases being back in the top 20.
