there are plenty of bands that "do w/e" that aren't complete jokes musically. they don't even really "do whatever", they just do the most boring generic chug rhythms thrown over autotune vocal choruses and then sometimes throw a random synthline over a part. They spend more time perfecting their crabdance and guitar spins than any of their music. Bands that REALLY do whatever and have songs that aren't completely boring copy/paste chugs: Behold the Arctopus, Psyopus, Iwrestledabearonce, Devil Wears Prada, Devin Townsend, Unexpect, BTBAM, early Rolo Tomassi, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Horse the band, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle

hell I'd even say Enter Shikari was a more daring and experimental group than Attack Attack ever was. sorry I just really hate Attack Attack

Anyone check out Kamelot's new release? They seem to be going back in the right direction. Hiring Seventh Wonder's vocalist was a good idea. Just wish he wasn't trying so hard to be Khan.

Dunno if anyone likes Rings Of Saturn. But new albums pretty good.
I can't really get very much into this band but a couple of the new songs are really cool.

It's just...too much sweeps.

Just listened to the newest Behold the Arctopus. Boring pretentious ****fest music as usual. My bandmates are super into this band but I think they're pretty much **** no matter how good they are at tapping chromatic riffs really fast in weird times

Yeah i know what you mean.

It's like alot of those new "underground" progressive bands.
All they do is just, a bunch of bull ****.

Like, sweeping and tapping nonstop even through verses.
Unnecessary breakdowns. **** like that.

It just sounds so... by the book.

That's exaclty the opposite of what I'm talking about though. I hate Behold the Arctopus, but nothing they do is "by the book". I admire them for making such ridiculously avant-garde music but it's a complete void of emotion for me.

Do you ever listen to Veil Of Maya?
That's one of the bands that's like "Hey, everyone check it out, i do alot of fast tapping and sweeping, did we make a song yet? Oh wait, let me throw in this breakdown that has little to no rhythm to it"

It's like... it's so not by the book, it creates a definition of itself to me.

I like Behold The Arctopus, but they're a really ****ty metal band. They way their songs seem to be lacking in structure is sort of free jazzish and coming from a family of jazz musicians I can appreciate it.

I don't care much for Veil Of Maya though they're not too terrible. Sometimes they sound like scenecore hipster garbage trying to be tech-death though, and when that happens their music is absolutely dreadful.

Is that what they call it? Tech Death?

lol veil of maya hardly ever does fast tapping, a lot of their riffs are fast alternate picked riffs. my main gripe with veil has always been their generic chugging breakdowns though. Besides that they are pretty talented band.

they most certainly aren't tech-death either

Veil of Maya is like...idk, i'd just call them deathcore. Definitely not one of the bands that I think of when I think they are just trying to impress me with their tech skills. Most of their stuff is downright catchy. Listen to Necrophagist or Brain Drill then try and tell me that Veil of Maya is just tapping and sweeping tech noodles

I think they are just okay, but pretty cool live because they only have one guitarist and he loops himself to do harmonies and stuff.

posted about the new kamelot album. nobody likes them.

in the past i've also talked about other power metal bands i like. all negative comments.

it really feels like any music i personally like is somehow bad. =\

If you can articulate why you like the music you do, then there's really not much someone can tell you (or imply with silence) to say you're wrong.
Concerning taste there shall be no dispute
I mean hell, no convo in this thread about sludge will last more than a few posts, but I'd still tell these sodomites how much I love it :)

That being said, Kamelot's not too big a band so it's not too surprising you'd get little response. I actually liked their previous singer more, but all in all I'm kinda indifferent toward power metal. Never been "wow-ed" I guess

And in all honesty, negative opinions, including mine, about stuff you already know you like shouldn't mean **** to you unless you find yourself learning from the discourse.

A few kamelot songs I really like, but for some reason I'm turned off from a lot of their stuff. As for power metal as a whole, I tend to like a lot of the more symphonic sides of it, like some of nightwish's stuff. Epica is one of my favorite guilty pleasure bands too. They're barely power metal, but they're named after kamelot's album so they count as power metal in spirit.

Sonata Arctica used to be a band I listened to a lot, but they started getting not so good their past few albums.

I like power metal, a lot. In fact, I've recently science'd that it's the metal sub genre I listen to the most (: (science meaning nothing more spectacular than creating a last.fm account to do the counting for me :D)

It's just your precise choice of bands... I don't like Kamelot, and I've to this point never got around to checking out Machine Supremacy. I don't really remember (my memory is pretty famed among friends... sieve? More like bottomless barrel :x :D) what else you talked about and whether I was just too lazy to comment ... Obviously there's no problem with liking different stuff than I do at all, since I don't have any resemblance of a taste ... I listen to J pop after all :D

Some power metal bands I like would be Manticora, Sabaton, Blind Guardian, Dark Empire, and many more :)

Kamelot is one of the largest/most popular PM bands. LOL. Especially in europe/japan, despite being from Florida.

Xyzz likes all of the power metal bands I hate. BG would be good if they decided to go back to their late 80's/early 90's style of just raw speed/thrash/power as opposed to bull**** overproduced crap.

my favorite PM bands are, in rough order:

Machinae Supremacy
Rhapsody of Fire
Kamelot
Lost Horizon
Galneryus
Versailles

Nightwish is definitely power metal. Or at least, they were up until imaginarium. Now they're just ****.

Can we just pretend that terrible album never existed? :p

Relative to other pm bands, sure. But among metal in general they don't garner a lot of attention

That may just be my indifference though

Lol. Gotta love the people who come in here and just post "you like [insert band/song/album]? you must be deaf that's one of the ****tiest things I've ever heard in my life!" then jump back out. Saying "that is one of the best/worst" does not lead to any fruitful discussion

anyways, this song came on when I was biking home. it was perfect halloweenyness
