I liked new Wintersun a lot, felt like a trip to the North Pole and back. It's way different from the debut, slower paced and almost fully orchestrated. Took me a few listens to appreciate it correctly because of the heavy instrument layering it has. They are streaming the whole album on their Facebook/website for a few days.

Opeth is my favorite band. Period. but I do enjoy myself some In Flames (older more than newer), Protest the Hero, BTBAM, and Lamb of God(again older than newer) to name a few

Poor Lamb of God fans

I was gonna check them out cuz Gojira was featured at the show they'd be at here in AZ but I think his bail got overturned or something and they had to cancel

I was pretty disappointed with that video after hearing so much hype. It's pretty gross I guess...but Cephalic Carnage's Ohrwurm video still has it beat in quality and is just as disturbing. Now THAT's a well made video. The Cattle Decap is more in your face but it's just not as good in other respects. I'll give it props for the final shot which actually kind of moved me, strange as it is to say it. Still though, everyone go watch Ohrwurm.

wrong. rise of a digital nation for album of the year.

:phone:
Idk, Machinae Supremacy still isn't doing much for me, the instrumentation is nice on some tracks, but the vocals throw me off a bit, too generic for this guitarwork. I feel I've heard that song and dance before, you know? From Sonata Arctica, Kamelot, and the like. The only thing they did imo was add a competent lead guitar to that same droll style.

That Cattle Decap video.... :c That was something, alright. Really... something.

I need to really think about this AOTY thing, Parallax II is up top as of right now, but 2-10 on my list are so close together, I've got no clue XD.

^Someone doesn't know anything about songwriting. Everything MaSu does is super solid.

also the vocals are crazy improved since Deus Ex.

My favourite album of the year isn't even metal (Approaching Nirvana - Blocking the Sky). Might be the new Wintersun album turns out better, didn't get to acquire that one yet (might be I'll just go to the concert on Wednesday next week without having listened to the album before and have the first listen to it there).
Other melodeath (last fm told me I actually listen to that genre quite a bit more than I expected :D) I've just recently discovered would be the album Spectral by Skyfire. I enjoy it, a lot (:

I think your misinterpreting what I said. The instrumental aspect of this album is really solid, I acknowledge that; it's the vocals that bring it down. Bad. Just because they're improved doesn't mean they got GOOD. (see Chelsea Grin's Evolve EP). I feel they could be HUGE if they had a different singer or went instrumental.

After a bit of thinking, I'm actually really surprised to say my top 3 albums for 2012 so far have been BTBAM, Periphery, and Yellowcard. Southern Air is one of my favorite pop-punk releases to date.

I consider The Seer as one of the greatest albums I'm probably never going to listen to again. It's a hell of an experience alone with headphones in a dark room. More terrifying than any metal song. though I guess you could consider Swans to be some kind of post metal or industrial even.

I still give the shorter tracks on the album a listen fairly often, but I'm gonna have to be in a REALLY dark mood if I will ever listen to the whole album again. It's very stressful. The Seer Returns is my favorite song off the album and I also like Lunacy a lot.

Seer Returns is like an aural David Lynch movie

also the album cover is possibly my favorite album art this year. so awesome hahaha

In no real order my favorite albums this year include:
Tame Impala - Lonerism
The Gaslamp Killer - Breakthrough
Gojira - L'enfant sauvage
metal for relevance :D
Jack White - Blunderbuss
...actually no, the only order I'll impose is that Tame Impala is definitely my #1

I also suspect that Kendrick Lamar will find his way on there once I listen to his new album.

I think the new Kendrick might top out Nas' Life is Good for me. album is blowing my mind.

anyways, so there is this FB page called Introduce Yourself: Band Promotion https://www.facebook.com/IYpromo

they are making a physical magazine I guess, and their first issue is the top 10 rising unsigned bands of 2012 and they put us up in the initial poll. and we actually are in the running so far. last I checked we were in 8th place. that is pretty awesome to me. I have no idea what the scope of this is going to be, as idk if physical magazines will catch on nowadays but either way it will be awesome.

sooo, i think you know what i'm getting at and i'm being hypocritical i'm sure, but if you have a FB you should totally throw a vote for my band Contacting Nebulas

https://www.facebook.com/questions/392982614105470/?notif_t=question_answer

you can make multiple choices so if you see better bands or know some better unsigned bands on there definitely give them a vote as well. I personally recommend in order FERO LUX, Gillian Carter, Holly Maddux, Dark Sermon, Akeldama, Cryptodira

Someone ban Luigitoilet. He obviously has never contributed to this thread, and is just using Smashboards to spread the word about his music.

xD

also, we're doing one of those "every band covers a single band" shows sometime next year. i.e. one band is doing Foo Fighters set, one is doing Korn, one's doing Pearl Jam...one is doing Attack Attack for some ungodly reason. anyways, everyone in my band couldn't really agree on a classic or nonmetal band that would fit for us so we just decided to cover JFAC's Doom EP xD . i'm down though. after we decided I went and listened to it for the first time since like 10th grade or something and got me all nostalgic.

Am I the only one who actually likes Attack Attack's older stuff? (Stick stickly, The People's Elbow, Bro, Ashley's Here etc)

They just did w/e and I'm cool with that.
