The news of an ARMS character joining the roster is very encouraging.

For Fighters Pass 2, I’m thinking they will put mostly Nintendo characters and sprinkle in one or two third party characters. It’s like what they did for Fighters Pass 1 except it was the other way around. Who knows, but I feel like that’s what they’re going for.

That's the hope right. If you go with the idea that it will be anti-climatic (so starting with their best stuff), then starting with ARMS seems to indicate a great Nintendo focus.

I've been thinking that perhaps the budget for this fighter pass is smaller. I remember Sakurai saying something about them overspending the budget for FP1 and it may have been due to the trailers they made. Smash 4's DLC didn't get the same trailers as it was all just in game footage. I could see FP2 going a similar route and why we could be seeing more Nintendo characters.

See, we assume that Nintendo can get whatever series they want, but we never consider the cost. I'm sure Nintendo had to pay out something to the rights holders to get the game into Smash, but it was likely worth it if sales were going to be strong and they could keep people excited. But we're now a year and a few months past the release of Ultimate. The excitement will wear down a bit of some of the people who bought FP1 may not get FP2. There is going to be a natural attrition. If the goal is just to get more characters for diehard fans, then it's easier for Nintendo to use their own characters. The fact that they started with ARMS could indicate this. PF1 started with Joker, someone Nintendo didn't even own, and he was the only character announced outside of a typical Nintendo event (like a Direct).

I should note that if you look at Fighter Passes for other games they don't add the same amount of guest characters Smash does. Perhaps it's just Smash's clout or that Sakurai wants to work on series outside of Nintendo. But normally they have maybe one outside character if any at all. We'll likely know more come June, but it could be 4-5 Nintendo characters with 1-2 guest. Still, you'd think if they had a guest they'd open with that but who knows.

NRS games and a few Bandai Namco fighters also get many guest characters, but there's more criticism by their fanbases against it. Joker's announcement for Mortal Kombat 11 got a poor reception by that franchise's fanbase that wanted more Mortal Kombat characters.

Not necessarily. Mewtwo was our first dlc character for Smash Bros 3DS & Wii U and we got Ryu halfway through. (and Bayonetta at the end)

Personally I feel like an Arms character being the first dlc character for this pass proves that the Smash community rarely knows what it's talking about when it comes to predicting characters. Most of the time we even get anything "right" these days is because it was leaked to us beforehand so we were already thinking about it. (Hero is one that comes to mind)

Kururin and Starfy could be potential newcomers since Brawl if Nintendo of America did localize their games.

Nice to see folks out there who remember/are aware of Kururin! Speaking of which, I guess this would be as good a time as any to plug this here...

I made a Kururin for Smash thread quite a while ago!

I meant that Smash has more guest than most games. Tekken's two DLC packs both had an outside character. I didn't realize people wanted more Mortal Kombat characters over things like Joker.

I think that if Nintendo did it for the first fighter pass, it's reasonable to believe they'd do it for the second. It makes sense as well. This is going to be done over more than a year, so it makes sense to announce bigger profile characters early to drum up interest.

Feels like an inverse of people complaining about Raiden getting into Injustice 2. At least he had a Premier Skin which turned him into Black Lightning, but I don't think they can do that for any guests in Smash, except maybe an Advance Wars commander for Snake. But that's only because the Brawl third parties didn't have the gimmicks later ones did.

I actually think it'll be the other way with more first than third parties.

As DLC content rolls on less budget is (usually) given out, so I can see them having mostly first party choices with a smaller team and less budget.

I hope you're right because that would give more room for characters like Dixie Kong and Elma to squeeze in.

God I hope so. That being said I could also see the 2nd pack following the first. Because tbh none of the 3rd party characters (except 1) in the 1st pack seemed like expensive gets. Obviously this is all speculation and I have nothing to back my claims up but my theory:

Hero was definitely the most expensive out of the bunch due to Dragon Quest popularity in Japan and the fact they were dealing with Square and how the DQ creators are very protective of their characters/IP.

Joker was probably the 2nd most expensive get and even then I question that considering while Persona is popular and 5 has elevated the franchise to new heights at the end of the day its still a somewhat niche franchise in a niche genre outside of Japan.

Banjo couldn't have been that expensive of a get considering Microsoft really didnt have that much to gain from his inclusion other than to please the fans considering the franchise is pretty much on life support/teetering on dead.

Terry was probably the least expensive character to get. SNK isnt that popular anymore and Terry was fairly unknown to the world outside of Latin America. I think its pretty telling how cheap this character was to get considering SNK gave Sakurai like 100 music tracks with him. The music is probably as costly as the actual character IP and SNK just seemed to give it away.

Obviously we wont know which direction the 2nd pass is headed until we get our 2nd character confirmation. But I doubt we will be getting characters like Master Chief, Sora, or Crash Bandicoot in this fighters pass because if the 1st fighters pass didnt have the budget for them I highly doubt the 2nd pass will. If the 2nd pass gets 3rd party fighters I see them being like "Here's Shantae, Rayman, Travis Touchdown" type characters.

I still am expecting at least one more big 3rd party icon to get in Fighters Pass 2 if the whole pass is going to be Nintendo. Crash along with Geno I am highly expecting especially at this year's E3. But dear lord I wish I had more hope for Shantae and Dixie Kong though.

that may depend on how much of their profit they decided to use for their dlc budget

I still wouldn't be surprised if Master Chief is the last fighter though. We finally got Banjo & Kazooie in the game due to Nintendo and Microsoft corporating and this could be Nintendo's only chance to get the Xbox mascot in the game. Putting Master Chief in would be a wise move from Sakurai and Nintendo if Microsoft is up for it because we don't know how long this relationship of theirs will last. Plus it would be amazing to see Chief in the game beside Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, Mega Man, ect.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you, but I'm just stating the facts. People would go ape **** if Chief got in. He would get one of the biggest pops out of reactors and people in general.
but why? weve reached the point where any video game character can get in

Master Chief, by virtue of being the mascot of a competitor, would absolutely be the character with the biggest response so far. You don't have to like him or think he's cool, but objectively you'd be in a minority.

Because Master Chief was the face of the X-Box.
but microsoft said they had a good relationship with nintendo and already have a fighter in, so master chief really isnt that much of stretch

i dunno the response to sonic would be hard to beat

If we're talking First party characters, i'd say that Sami from Advance Wars is probably one of my most wanted.

I still find it strange that she doesn't have a spirit, i mean, she always appears on the box art and promotional art of the AW games alongside Andy, and he managed to get in as a spirit but not her.

I know missing spirits really don't mean much since the spirit "rule" is one that we sort of made up anyways but still, i can't help but be a little suspicious... surely they didn't just forget about her right ?... right ?

Advance Wars as a whole was very weirdly treated Spirit-wise. I'd have expected more Spirits, but even with the amount that we got, the selection is just off. No Sami or Max? It's probably just unfamiliarity with the source material to blame.

Opossum Opossum Won me over when I looked through his support thread for Caeda.

I even made a Classic Mode for her:
Caeda: Together, We Fly! (Fights against characters who fly, ost of which are associated with wings; every battle is a team battle w/Marth. You might like this one, Opossum Opossum )
Stage 1: :ultcharizard:on :castlesiege: (Shadow Dragon Medley)
Stage 2: :ultpit::ultdarkpit:on :skyworld: (Underworld)
Stage 3: Giant Metal :ultpalutena: on Great Bay (With Mila’s Divine Protection (Celica Map 1))
Stage 4: :ultmetaknight:x7 (horde battle) on :halberd: (Air Man Stage)
Stage 5: Giant :ultridley: on Dracula’s Castle (Lords-Showdown)
Boss: Rathalos (Fated Battle)
Stage 7: :ultmario:(wedding alt) :ultpeach: (white alt); Giant:ultbowser:(white alt) on Rainbow Cruise (Victory is Near)

Right ? And they even removed the assist trophy, such a shame.

Chief is to the Xbox brand what Mario, Sonic, and Crash are to the Nintendo, Sega, and PlayStation brands. He is literally one of the most iconic gaming characters in history period.
I agree and I'm not a fan at all. Master Chief is nowhere on my most wanted list, cause I never got an X-Box and barely played it, but I would understand the hype.

Sorry, I thought the subject was ''I don't understand why people would like it'', so we tried to give some explanations. If it actually is ''I don't like it and don't wanna hear anything about it'', then yeah, let's drop the subject.

You showed no interest in understanding why people would love Master Chief (and Crash) in Smash and said that we should just "understand" that you don't like this character. I think we all understand. So there is nothing left to say.

This is the first party thread so it might be best to drop it anyway.

Let's talk assist trophy upgrades instead, and what stage and song you'd bring with them if it happens
