I was hoping to see Illmatic vs MikeHAZE, but it seemed like Reflex was playing very well. Ill, can you go through a complete recap of your bracket experience? I really want to know your impressions of X, Reflex and the tourney runner-up Nietono and how they've changed how you view the MU's.
In round one pools, Darc beat me pretty solidly. I was playing like a complete idiot and wanted to just do whatever I wanted to him. It wasn't working at all. Too many apparent fairs on shield, terrible spacing, etc etc. Marth is really hard for me, plus he practices with Nicole. I lost 0-2, getting second seed. In round one pools I also beat KassandraNova, Steep, and Megalodon.
After advancing out of round one pools with second seed I had to play Ally. I decided to go against him first so I could really just warm up and play a hard set so the others would seem a bit easier. Game one I think I got two stocked.. I'm not too sure. I know for a fact though that I was playing really well... it's just that his Metaknight would NOT die. It survived until 235%, if I remember correctly on his first stock.. and that could have been two whole stocks if I figured out a way to just kill him a bit earlier. I think Ally was impressed by my Peach cause he would say stuff regarding my spacing and quick aerials or whatever. He's just like.. the epitome of a smart player. Everything he does is planned and works in his favor like 85% of the time. Game two I did even better than game one, but I died at 27% due to that dumb parasol rule if your opponent is over 110%. I took him to last stock mid-percent and I think I could have even maybe won if I didn't die so early on one of my stocks. Metaknight is a -3 matchup for Peach.
Player-1 was a really solid Diddy. He's actually really underrated and really impressive once he gets his momentum going. The thing is, he's a momentum based player, for the most part. When he was doing well... he was doing
really well.. but when I was doing well.. it hurt him really badly. Like, I would do one huge 50%+ combo and you could tell he was scared.. but then he would do the same thing back to me. If you just came into the match near the end.. you would think that it was a close set.. but in reality we just took turns combo-video'ing each other back and forth. It's hard to explain, but the matches were just like pretty close and really fun. It was enjoyable playing him, and it could have went either way. I think I just had a few smarter reads / faster inputs on a few situations and I knew that I had to get some quick damage and time him out game two before he figured that out. I learned a lot about banana control during this set. I won 2-0. Peach slightly beats Diddy Kong.
Yukhoe had a really interesting Peach and Wario. He went Peach game one against me and I two stocked it. It was doing some alright stuff, but it wasn't anything worth mentioning or researching into. I just basically was more in sync with my character than he was. Game two he went Wario and was winning pretty solidly on Frigate until I made a huge comeback and had a pretty nice lead until I Peach bombed offstage completely accidentally and had a fart go right up my nose last stock. Game three, I was just like.. "time to win!" I think this is where I played my absolute best the entire tournament and I almost JV three stocked his Wario on Battlefield. He looked a bit upset after I had beaten him.. like his skill wasn't enough to beat me... regardless of his knowledge on my character because he co-mained her. Wario is a really interesting matchup, but I don't think many Peach players will ever truly take advantage of what she excels so well in. An aggressive Peach can make Wario look terrible due to her amazing spacing, quick move output, and grab release up-smash. I won 2-1. I could see Peach being +1 against Wario, but I think my playstyle makes it +2.
Nietono I played right away. I was hoping to do really well maybe even cause an upset, but it was apparent that he just knew a lot more about the matchup then me. I've always went fairly close with all USA Olimars (Denti, Dabuz, Rich Brown, etc etc) but Nietono was in like some extreme camp/quick playstyle and it was too much for me. He basically sacrificed his entire first stock to get only purple pikmins (he had six in his line game one) and then it was like a gamebreaker or something. I literally had no options to approach due to him throwing three in the air at one time and then just spamming f-smash or grab if I tried approaching from the ground. I tried to kill them, but I would take more damage attempting to do so, cause he could just hit me while I was doing my attacks. Plus, none of Peach's moves (especially when stale) do 15% consistently, so it wasn't even killing the purples. I tried to also camp with turnips but the purples just went right through them. He made it feel like an impossible matchup to win, and he knew it really well (farm purples). I lost 0-2. I'm not too sure about this matchup. All American Olimars have made me think this matchup is even, but the Japanese have shown me that there are a ton of things American Olimars don't know how to manage around against Peach. There also are probably tons of things I don't know as a Peach player in the matchup. Nietono is just a much better player than me at the moment, so I probably got outplayed.. but there was something very evil that he was doing to me. It felt like a -3 with all those purples..
X was really annoying to fight. He just aimed to time me out or camp me super hard with dumb spin-dash stuff and gimmicks on the top of stages via spring or whatever but I wasn't having any of it. All I did was approach and go super aggressive and it worked for the most part. Damage input was definitely leaning towards my favor... I would do like 45%+ in one combo, compared to his like 30% and on top of this he couldn't kill me too easily. I just understood what I had to do to beat him and it worked. He's an amazing player, but I just think I wanted to win the set more than he did. I won 2-0. It felt like an even matchup.
Reflex saw me beat Yukhoe pretty badly so he didn't go Wario versus me. It was a really smart decision because Wario is one of my favorite matchups and I have no idea what to do versus a top level squirtle. He only went squirtle and basically exposed me regardless of fatigue. I felt like I wasn't even thinking the entire set.. he would just maneuver past all of my setups, take me into the air via u-tilt or something, and then just go crazy on Peach's terrible floaty design and horrible airdodge. I felt helpless the entire set and it wasn't too much fun for me. I feel like I made a terrible impression on him because he was just taking full advantage on me not having any type of matchup experience on that kind of level. He's an amazing player, and it was really hard to do anything. I lost 0-2. Peach loses to Squirtle really badly.. it's probably a -2. She beats Ivysaur and Charizard +2, though.
Leon's Peach was really good. Probably one of the best I've played in 100% give it my all Peach dittos. It's just like finding one of America's top players using Peach.. but it's really cool because almost all of America's top players hate Peach. It was a really rare experience to encounter and I enjoyed it a lot. During our set.. I would make these huge leads from just doing insane combos.. I think I even got a small u-air string read on him. But he was much better at making those small decisions to read my habits. His offstage Peach game is really different and something I'm going to look into and try to understand. He really likes to stagespike his opponents by using fair and nair while facing the stage in a float. He always loves d-tilt and f-tilt and uses it a lot. It was a really fun set, I won 2-0. He told me I was the only person to ever beat him in the ditto.
