Tap Jump?

Just wanted some opinions/feedback on what people use and why-pros/cons ect... Personally I can't stand tap jump ON. However I've been thinking about attempting to get used to it lately. Some of my OPINIONS on the advantages/disadvantages-->

Pros-
-Much easier weaving fairs- or other attacks in general with c-sticking air attacks- main reason
-Up-b out of shield easier- hmmm is this true in brawl?

Cons-
-Less user friendly uptilts(not a big part of Marth's game anyways but...)
-In general feels weird as hell to me- obviously I'm biased

It would be nice to know what some top Marths out there are doing with it and whether people think it can actually put some distance in between skill levels- i.e. two people who play marth at about the same skill level- exp, mindgames, knowledge of opponents ect... the one who uses it ON or OFF will do better majority of the time-

or.... I'm just making a big deal out of something which affects competitive gaming about as much as color choice does (c. falcon, and d3 excluded- we all know the power of the pink/white)

I don't understand why people hate on tap jump. :( Some characters it helps to have off, but I prefer the versatility of both options available. I consistently switch between "y" and the control stick during the course of a match. Once you reserve it for certain motions, it becomes second nature.

I personally enjoy having my tap jump on. However, I don't keep it on for when I'm using characters with multiple jumps, it gets in the way.

I've never thought it was needed to set tap jump off for Marth. In my mind, control stick is meant to be tilted, not jammed. Hence the name u*tilt*. But then again, that's just me. Ah, gotta love the up b out of shield as well.

i like upb out of shield but tap jump screws me up trying to dash dance, up tilt, edge hog, spike, and edge guard. it just makes me jump a lot when i don't mean to. annoying.

Turning off tap jump is a crutch that deprives you of learning to control your control stick. You can't upB out of shield AT ALL if you turn it off, you have to drop the shield fully then do the attack. This is the biggest hiderance because dolphin slash is Marth's fastest attack on startup time and can be a decent kill move...

It's also annoying when people go through to change their controller settings in tournament play...

Gah there are so many crutches in Brawl... controller settings... Metaknight...

I keep it on, because you can do so much more. Just practice utilts and you should be fine (actually, utilts are pretty good). Once you get the motion down, you've got it. I never accidently jump because of tap jump.

Thanks for the feedback guys- Sorry bout not seeing the other post in search(did it wrong or something) already about this topic- Would be nice to have some hard data(actual frame advantage for up-b OOS tap on /off) or whether its just "easier" one way or another-
Also I'm surprised people haven't commented on what i HAD believed to be the most important part of tap-on- which is increased weaving ability(at least it seems that way to me)- about that thread VietGeek posted- someone in there talked about using their L-trigger as jump which now that i think about it seems pretty novel if you can train your hand to use it correctly-freeing up your right hand for c-stick air attacks while jumping/moving backwards while fairing ect...
- opinions/feedback welcome

Directly above you tipping a dair.
for marth you need to keep tap jump on.
His up B out of shield is INFINITELY more useful than an 'easier' up-tilt.
Um, but what if u use up tilt more than up B out of the shield? I think it is a matter of how much u use up tilt instead of of how easy is it to up b outta ur shield. Overall, uptilt is a safer move than up b cuz it has less lag so i tend to use it more often. Shoot, i even run into an up b more often then i up b outta my sheld. However, i dont mean to belittle seras point, even tho he no longer mains marth.:ohwell:

I may not main marth but I have over 8,000 games under my belt with him in brawl.

Learn to up tilt without turning off tap jump, just requires more finesse. You are basically SACRIFICING an amazing ability and option in battle if you turn off tap jump.

You're basically saying "I don't feel like fine-tuning my up tilt finesse, so I'm going to completely sacrifice 2 very useful abilities so I can make his up tilt more viable for me due to my lack of practice".

learn to play.

I play with tap jump off. It probably doesn't matter for me because of me using the x button to jump. I never use the control stick to jump. It just doesn't fell right to me.

I pretty much agree with what EL says about Tap Jump. >_>b

If you leave tap jump off then you would need to jump first since you can't up b out of shield with analog. This means that you wouldn't be able to abuse the invincibility frames from the up b since you would have to jump from your shield first which is slower and makes you vulnerable for at least 1 frame before you could up b.

I should shoot everyone who would even think of maining Marth and playing with tap jump off.

All of you kill yourselves now.

I hate the tap jump because it makes MetaKnight do that stupid, out of control uair thing. With Marth, it's not a big deal. I prefer it off just in case.

People... You don't need to have Tap Jump On to UpB out of your shield... It doesn't matter whether you have it on or off, it's just a matter of preference...

You need to however, map it to a place where you can easily buffer in a jump quickly to eliminate the one frame delay. I use shoulder buttons. I need it for easier Jump Cancel Throws for Toon Link too.

Sucks to have characters that are needy of certain button layouts, lol.

EL, I'm not dying for you. <_<

It takes time to jump out of a shield and press up b. In theory it can take 1 frame minimum to jump, and thats if you have inhuman, lv 9 cpu timing, which you dont. In the time it takes to do this, some characters can get a grab in or jab. Even if you can jump out of the shield, its doesnt put you in a direct invincible state. Up B out of a shield is faster simply because your jumping and doing your up b in one controller input. Tap jump off defeats the purpose and chance of abusing invincibility frames.

Dropping a shield and doing a up b =/= up b out of shield.

Tap jump off is this....(this is assuming that you can do the combination in 1/6 of a second, at worst)

Frames 0 = Press Jump Button
Frame 1-10= Initiate up b
Frames 1-10 = Invincible
Frame 5-15 = Hitbox Strikes

This means without up b out of shield they have 15 frames tops, to get a shield in and block you, 10 frames they can grab you. With up b out of shield you are immediately brought into a invincible state from your shield this way you can beat any attack thrown at you. If a Snake ftilts and the first hit damages your shield, you can up b out of the shield and Snake will be hit through his attack, only with tap jump on.

Everyone needs to read this post repeatedly.

Tap jump on or GTFO.

Although you don't need to drop your shield to jump with a button ZMT.

So omit those first few frames for the shield drop as it's not neccessary.

QFT

Also, completely forgot about jumping with a button lol.

But even so, it is slower with tap jump off. Its impossible to press both jump and up b at the exact same time. I edited my previous post.

Let me guess, Ankoku puts tap jump off to further spite you?
