This thread came at a time when I was hitting a writer's block thanks to quarantine, and this let me outpour a lot of my creative juices into things I truly care about. That's awesome.
But I do have to say, it's very good at distracting me. I've been home for two hours and just now finished my half hour of homework thanks to the summoning debate-gosh dang it!
Everything about this is incredibly relatable. I was on Smashboards reading the summoning debate during a chemistry lecture lol

So based on the current voting from 28 users, Sami will be our Advanced Wars Rep.

Sami Gameplay Submission

So this is where we sound off on what kind of gameplay we think Sami should have. She’s been a point of contention due to the conceit that, yes, she would be yet another Summon Cgaracte like Dr Eggman, Officer Howard, and Crazy Dave. To reiterate, if you intend to make a summoning gameplay, make it stand out against these three. Dr. Eggman is your typical summoner, Officer Howard is a puppeteer/tactical summoner, and Crazy Dave is a stage control/defensive summoner.

You are free to create a gameplay that focuses on a gimmick or a more standard moveset. You may also try to strengthen your argument after your in total post and participate in debate. Once we get submissions, we will commence the voting to decide.

Gimmick/Neutral Special: Factory/Produce
View attachment 329746
At the start of the match, much like Steve's Crafting Table, a Factory will spawn at her location in the background. This would be the crux of Sami's general playstyle, as Factories are crucial in producing Units (which we may have to vote on later). However, they do not do so automatically. She needs to use Neutral Special to queue 4 units of any combination of her choice to build, each individual unit requiring her to land a certain amount of hits to build. As soon as the threshold is reached, a unit will spawn and fight alongside Sami, but only 4 can be out at a time, much like the old Infantry and Tanks Assist Trophy from Brawl and Smash 4, so as to not make it too crazy. Essentially, this mechanic is like these:
View attachment 329747
In Guilty Gear XRD Rev-2, Jack-O', who you may know as the funny pose lady, was capable of generating these structures called Ghosts, each tied to an attack button, and would spawn minions over time to fight alongside her. But again: the difference is that Sami needs to actually fight to spawn her troops, and only one can be out at a time.

Final Smash: Megatank Assault:
View attachment 329748
This massive chonky-boy is the Megatank, an extremely hard-hitting Land Unit introduced in Advance Wars 2. When Sami activates her Final Smash, she blows a whistle and causes several infantry to charge forward. Anyone hit will be put in a Meta Knight/Donkey Kong-style Final Smash where the Factory will spawn a Megatank, regardless of what it was building already. It will then turn towards the caught fighters and fire its all-powerful Megacannon, dealing 5 hits of some INSANE damage.
So I have a full moveset here (I made it in advance)

I personally think that an Advanced Wars characters should be a traditional summoner but I heard the arguments from the other side so I tried to make a moveset that did not involve summoning units. so this moveset is more traditional but it still has it's quirks.
We are just doing gameplay submissions. Once we vote on those, we decide which moves to include.

Playstyle submission: Mix-up

Mix-up Sami doesn't summon (for the most part), ride vehicles or have enhancable skills - she just uses her own military force and weapons to take on foes - however, unlike Snake who is a stage control/trapper character Sami is more of a mix-up fighter who is generally balanced but lacks a good defensive game. She may be allowed to summon members of her platoon for certain moves like Smash attacks or throws (preferably with some sort of aesthetic "explanation", like snipers digging out from the dirt, rather than a poof of smoke), but they don't stay on stage once the move is over. She would have more projectiles than an average mix-up fighter, but her physical attacks are where she shines.

Sami Playstyle Submission: Military-grade Strategist

As far as I know, Advance Wars is about strategy and knowing when to employ the right weapon or platoon at the right time to gain the best stage control without overextending too much into enemy territory; This is a playstyle that translates well to Smash even without the actual summoning of tanks.

I propose that Sami has a large amount of weapons at her disposal in her moveset, each designed around a unit in Advance Wars and its weaknesses and strength. Some moves are slow, with a low firing rate but with a big radius. Some are faster in firing-rate, leading to a strength-by-numbers approach and some weapons are more suited for close-quarters combat and some weapon need their space etcetera. For consistency’s sake, these weapons don’t have to be represented by literal weapons: Infantry units “translated” to Smash this way can be represented with Sami’s machine gun, while the vehicles of the game can be represented with different usages of her Rocket Launcher. Like Byleth, her moveset is a mix of these two core types of moves.

I’d like these Fox-like translations of the weaponry to be projectiles in Sami‘s specials, to give her a solid gunner base, but the Infantry and Tanks dichotomy can also be translated by punches/kicks vs using a rocket launcher or machine gun as a physical weapon like Samus and Inkling do respectively

Honestly I love all of these. So much so I’m going to sit back and see what kind of gameplay is submitted instead of submitting my own. I honestly would love to see anyone of these be included.

Sami's Playstyle: Command and Conquer (not the video game)

Seizing and commanding is the main part of the Wars game even if you're going fully original, it's not really a unique occurrence as even Captain Falcon and the Star Fox crew adapted their game's odd genre and translate it into a proficient hand-to-hand combat sort of like a fighting style (Captain Falcon's speed and pyromancy is obviously emulating a speeding race car on a race track).

In Sami's case, her playstyle mostly adapting and studying each character to take advantage of their arsenal with how balance she is in forms of firearm and close combat which will be both present on her moveset but firearms will mostly be more prominent to differentiate her from Snake as Wars games is all about packing heat.

Of course, with her role as a commanding officer she will perform an act of deployment but on a minimal scale. Consider this, both Robotnik, Howard and Dave's form for summon involves calling in entities that can act separately and linger, for Sami, her form of "summoning" is that her troops will appear on command for a brief period of time and will withdraw their weapons after they execute their attack or getting flinched at least for their specials, think about this as something similar to Zelda's Phantom and the Wild Gunmen, no need for upgrade, can't be spammed and could actually act as a meat shield which can vary in durability depending on the unit (looking back at this, this sounds pretty morbid.. like war!)

Honestly, I'm more concern about the special since that's what define the character most considering the sole reason Eggman count as one is because of his special.

Ah. Well in that case...

Playstyle: Descend Into Darkness, 303 Days Below The Sun

Sami is a lightweight bait-and-punish character with amazing pressure and a versatile toolkit to push the enemy lines. With far-reaching disjoints and quick frame data, she can rack up damage and slowly, yet surely, put the enemy into the disadvantage, just like in an actual war. But it's not completely mindless: Sami mains have to know which tools to use for the right situation, even moreso than other fighters, meaning if she uses the wrong move against the wrong action, she can be put in grave danger. Furthermore, the specifics of her set give her a rather high skill ceiling, so many players might not exploit their kits how they want to. Furthermore, she's rather easy to kill and her recovery game leaves much to be desired. When fighting against Sami, the key is to goad her into making a mistake, then exploit her openings while being mindful of her mobility. When playing as Sami, you want to be strategic about your attacks, knowing when to use your forces to attack the opposing force. Once the enemy is countered, that is your chance to push the enemy lines.

Job #162: Submit an Advanced Wars stage

Advanced Wars has some interesting locations but a lot of them focuses on things like battlefields and such. We will be submitting stages for Advanced Wars. We are going for a stage that encapsulates the general style of the series without resorting to HD’ified visuals if that makes sense. While we aren’t looking for a straight up rip from game to Smash; we do want a stage that still containing the visuals and feelings of those games.

When submitting content, please provide the following info:
  • Name
  • Game(s) it appears in
  • Appearance
  • Any Stage Gimmicks or Hazards
  • Cameos
  • Battlefield/Omega
  • Why it should be included

HQ
Origin: Advance Wars

HQ's are your most important properties in Advance Wars, since if the enemy claims your HQ, you lose. In Smash Bros, there are four different variations of HQ that you can play in:
  • Orange Star (Hold L+:GCR:): Pictured above. Based on America. The stage takes place on the roof of an American Capitol building like Peach's Castle Melee.
  • Blue Moon (Hold L+:GCD:): Based on Russia. The stage is a multi-platform stage that takes place atop the towers of a building themed after Saint Basil's Cathedral.
  • Green Earth(Hold L+:GCU:): Based on Western Europe. Same as Orange Star, but this time taking place on a European Castle. There are two towers on either side that are half as tall as the towers in Shadow Moses Island, and the stage itself is about as wide as Final Destination.
  • Yellow Comet(Hold L+:GCL:): Based on Japan. A double-platform stage with similar aesthetics to Suzaku Castle.
Occasionally, an army of a different color will attack the base, with the army affiliated with the stage itself coming out to defend it. For example, if you're playing on Yellow Comet, you'll find Orange Star, Blue Moon, or Green Earth forces marching forth to attack Yellow Comet. However, there's an off-chance that you'll instead be attacked by Black Hole forces, who have an unnerving sci-fi element to them. Though the HQ you pick is random by itself, you can use a different input to pick a specific HQ you want, just like with Minecraft World.

  • Small Town
  • Harbor
Now is the time to discuss the main gimmick which obviously is in the title, on random occurrence the stage will zooms out to warn you that an army approaching from both sides, then at a random notice both opposing forces start a shoot off to which hits all of the opponent including each other and ended with one victor. Pretty simple. Of course both units will have different colors to each other to match the clashing faction.

I feel like the gameplay submissions are all similar enough to co-exist in one set. Only question that really stands out is the Wild Gunman-like move but even then Wario3’s submission noted “pop-up Smashes” and whether the moves itself will be explicitly based on the functionalities of certain units in Advance Wars and divide the moves in various categories based on those in Advance Wars like I was trying to convey in my write-up. (Which is also based on the term “Gun Byleth“ I’ve seen thrown around.) As for playstyle itself, we seem to be on the same page for an adaptive fighter with an above-average amount of projectiles to use for the right situation in my opinion.

Stage Submittion:
Map (Wars)

Appearance: Every Wars Game (Notably Advance Wars and Famicom Wars)

The layout is actually checkered flat Battlefield, where Random Tank's and Soldiers are appearing as Stage Hazards, where they appear on random checkertile and shoot at you or enemy like always.
Cameos are Olaf, Max, Isabella, Flak and Tasha who appear as cameos, where they spectating the Battle and in the middle of match, they fight with Black Hole forces from enemy side of their Background HQ, who hot defeated at the end of any match.
Omega and Battlefield Forms are Floating checkered Island without hazards and wars, but with cameos that still watch the match.

The Inclusion of this map would be similar to GolisoPower's and Commander Alph's submittions, which it would be cool. It would also represent whole WARS franchise from Famicom Wars to Battalion Wars and Advance Wars remakes as well with Modernized design. It even has Checkered Tiles on stage to fit the WARS franchise canonically to its Original Game series, which is FE's sister series.

Happy WarioWare: Get It Together Release Day! We never had a Wario spirit submission period with Ashley's inclusion, and that aren't too many spirits to submit from the current seres list eligible started a few days ago, so might as well hold an event for the occasion! WarioLand and Wario Ware spirits can be submitted. And of course, heres one to start us off:

Sami Gameplay Submission Results
Gameplay2 points1 pointTotal
Mix-up2 (4)48
Military Grade Strategist4 (8)412
Command & Conquer5 (10)111
Descend into Darkness2 (4)37

Congrats WeirdChillFever WeirdChillFever with their winning gameplay submission! Sami's moveset will be reminiscent of a Military Grade Strategist. For a refresher, you can read about the moveset here.

Sami Moveset Submissions
This also means that moveset submissions will be open! As per usual, we will be submitting normals, specials, throws and all of Sami's moveset. It will then be compiled and presented by the Leadership Team following submissions!

Please keep several things in mind while submitting moves for Sami:
  • Type of attack
  • The name of the move, if applicable
  • Damage percentage
  • A description of what it looks like, what it does, and what it can be used for
  • How it ties into the winning gameplay style of Military-grade Strategist
Please don't mix and match moves around. If you submit several attacks, please do so in a group to make things far more easier for us to sort through them. It was somewhat difficult last time. For example, don't submit a neutral special, a forward tilt, a down throw, a down special, and an up tilt. Rather, group in a way such as forward and down tilt, down throw, neutral and down special.

Also, please enable sure your moves line up with the gameplay submission put forth by Wierdchill. Deviations from this Military-grade Strategist submission.

Jab: Infantry Shot
1631322613811.png

A looping rapid-jab, similar to Meta Knight's Jab, Sami's takes a gun from the Infantry unit and begins spraying without a care in the world. Each shot deals 0.6% unflinching damage and the gun has a fire rate of 8 shots per second.

Side Smash: Mech Rocket
1631322807207.png

Sami takes out a rocket launcher and holds it on her shoulder. Unlike with Snake's Side Smash, this is aimed directly in front of her, and is functionally a cross between Snake's Up Smash and Mega Man's Side Smash. The rocket travels the same distance as the latter, and deals a maximum of 16% damage. To replicate its extra effectiveness on vehicles, the rocket also does additional shield damage.

Down Special

Light Machine Gun: Sami Pulls out an LMG a weapon she is seen with in artwork, while prone and uses the bipod, Sami is then completely static but she can freely aim her LMG in any direction in front of her. Pressing A while in this form shoots her gun. you can leave prone by jumping

Up Special

Bomber: A Bomber appears and Sami stands on top of it. You can control the planes direction. The plane is constantly shooting low power bombs from the bottom of the plane

Side special

Double Time: Sami dashes. This can be used to recover or just get behind opponents, She can dash twice in a row and the direction can be changed. The dash also removes any Debuffs like Flower. After dashing Sami gains a small movement buff.

We only had three stage submissions so I will be conducting them via thread poll:

Advance Wars

Crossfire
Stage

This stage prolly an original but incorporate various element from the game. First off, this stage doesn't taken place on a single area but rather various environment that changes randomly based on various in-battle background although it will be a flat stage with walk-off. This include but not limited to:
  • Forest
  • Plain Road
  • City
  • Airport
  • Small Town
  • Harbor
Now is the time to discuss the main gimmick which obviously is in the title, on random occurrence the stage will zooms out to warn you that an army approaching from both sides, then at a random notice both opposing forces start a shoot off to which hits all of the opponent including each other and ended with one victor. Dash Attack: Riding Recon
1631330352062.png

For her Dash attack, Sami hops onto a Recon unit, which are often used for scouting ahead. It has a hitbox on the vehicle itself, but there's an extra attack function: by mashing A, the Recon can fire it's mounted gun to deal non-flinching damage to anyone who are just out of range of the actual painful hitbox that is the jeep.

These two Spirits don't have official art yet, but it should be a matter of time before something's ripped from the game so I'll post them anyway.
