Sonic 4: Episode 1 has received largely positive reviews from multiple sources, from what I've seen. The complaints are minor and varied between sources, and are usually shoved aside in favor of the positives.

TouchGen, a review source for Iphone game Apps, gave the game 4 Stars. GamesRadar gave it a nine out of ten. And most significantly to me, IGN (or at least, one reviewer there), which previously rated Sonic and the Black Knight a lower score than Sonic 06, gave it an 8.0, and subtitled the review "Look out, Mario... Sonic's back!"

Amusingly, IGN viewers gave that review a score of 4.3. lol

I find it amusing how Sonic and the Black Knight got such a measly score when it was a very playable game that didn't have many problems. It was a protestful play-style from the usual type of Sonic game and people got up in arms over it.

That's how I feel, at least. People are entitled to their opinions, but reviewers and gamers in general these days are corrupted and cynical in how they think. Spoiled by the past, ruined for the future the second ONE thing changes.

Just bought the Wii port 20 minutes ago. The graphics and enhanced music are nothing short of awesome, and it runs great.

The Extra Life sound is the same as Sonic 3's. I love this game even more now.

I'm still anxious for someone to rip Sonic 4's Wiiware WAD. >.>

So I beat this game (wii) tonight guys, didn't bother getting the chaos emeralds.

My synopsis:

It is one of the best Sonic games that has come out post SA2. That isn't saying much however.

In comparison to Sonic 1 CD 2 3K it pales in comparison in the gameplay department. In fact, my little brother even said "wth is this? this isn't sonic".. when i let him play.

That being said, it runs rather smoothly but it is pretty slow compared to any of the 2d sonics.

It is short. I beat it in 45 minutes to an hour, but you probably already knew that considering there are only 4 zones.

It looks beautiful, very visually pleasing.

Overall, Sonic 4 is not a very pleasant or enjoyable experience. As short as the game is, it has you going through each stage wanting to see the next one, as you are bored and annoyed by the current stage. It keeps you occupied, it isn't really boring and some parts such as Lost Labyrinth are quite intriguing. For the most part though, it isn't hype.

The physics aren't the same as rush. The rush engine is much better. Either that, or the level design doesn't fit this engine.

There are a lot of badly place things that will get you killed. I died many many many many times because of dumb ****. Not because of lack of skill, I as well as all of you have the sonic formula down packed. It is really just stupidity of the game design that kills you and that will make you even more angry.

Boss music and some of the stage music is the worst that I have ever heard in a sonic game. Ever. period.

Overall, it definitely isn't worth 15$ on its own. I would pay $20 for all 3 episodes, but not $15 for this crap.

Even excluding the other sonic games as variables, this game is pretty annoying. It is a potentially fun game: It could be fun if you just want to mindlessly play a game without paying attention, but you can't do that or else you'll probably die from something you're not supposed to.

:)

Ouch. /shrug

I couldn't help but laugh at the complaint of the game being too slow. This isn't a jab at you or your opinion, but for all the times that people complained, "SONIC IS TOO FAST NOW!! IT'S NOT ABOUT SPEED! IT'S ABOUT PLATFORMING AND EARNING THAT SPEED!!"

So we get a slower pace that's more reminiscent of the classic Sonic series and now people think it's too slow. Watch SEGA speed things up for the sake of awesome and the fanboys ***** and moan yet AGAIN that it's too fast or something.

I admit the game looks like it could be a bit quicker in terms of speed, but really guys.

Make up your **** minds or shut up and let SEGA do their thing. Truth be told, they know what the fans want more than even the fans do. And by the fans, I mean the endless hoard of idiotic ones.

Yes, I do sound holier than thou then the ones who nitpick and ***** about every little thing. Only because I feel I am.

Dunno where this rant came from, but I can't help but shake my head in shame at this fanbase as a whole.

[EDIT]

Nice perspective, btw, Chain-Ace. I think you're being a little hard on it, but what I can agree with is that the shorter amount of levels is a bit of a downer.

Beat it, got all the chaos emeralds, and have a top three ranking in the first three splash hill stages for time trial :D.

My biggest gripe is that the physics are completely different from the old Sonic games. Second are the special stages, number 5 and 6 and a ****ing ***** to beat. Then stage 7 was easier than all of them but the first.

It's really fast though once you know all the routes. Spindash -> air dash -> air dash gets you to maximum speed with not much room required.

There's tons of alternate routes in each level.

Lives are worthless, you'll never run out. Casino Street zone act 2 gives anywhere between 5 to 25 lives depending on what routes you take.

I liked it. Definitely the best sonic that's come out since SA2. If they somehow added a Chao system, it'd be better imo.

I hope the physics are tweaked for episode 2.

I wouldn't have paid $15 for it, but maybe $10. $1,800 in the bank and I'm still pirating games <_<.

Super Sonic is awesome. About time he was usable again.

There's a middle ground you know. Sonic 2-3/Knuckles had the perfect blend of genius platforming and level design, exhilerating speedy parts and just general awesomeness. Compare that to walking around some ******* city talking to people in Sonic Adventure. And the 3D games just got worse and worse with all the extraneous crap.

On the other hand, the Advance games seem like they should be a lot better...but those aren't either! Mostly, they have the opposite problem as the 3D ones, it's just mind numbing running past the screen 80% of the time. I may be wrong about these overall because I've tried each one and got really bored halfway through each one.

That being said, I haven't played Sonic 4 yet. If I get really bored one day I might give it a go but, meh.

Truth be told, I'm more stoked to play Sonic Colors

Oh god, the boss music sounds like an MIDI. Even the Genesis-drums version sounds better. Jeez. Splash Hill's music, however, sounds awesomer that the early rips.
Lost Labyrinth 2 made me rage.
The Casino Street with all the cannons ticked me off too.
I'm at the final boss ATM. 3 emeralds.
Man, he's hard.

I downloaded it and I like it so far. Although the physics are weird (why is it that just walking up a vertical wall is more effective than spin-dashing?), the spin dash sucks, some level design issues and the the fact that the homing attack doesn't always work as intended drags it down a bit. Still, it's pretty fun and it's a good way to get Sonic back on track.

There is only one person from Japan on the Splash Hill Zone Act 1 leaderboards for the Wii version, in 7th place. However, he is the only one who used just regular Sonic, and beat it in 39 seconds.

Japan is too **** good.

This game is terrible. Sonic feels like he has lead shoes on and the environments look terrible. At least I have Sonic Colors to look forward to.

Currently have the world record on Lost Labyrinth Act 2 for the Wii port. I'm 5 seconds faster than 2nd place :)

I expect that record to be gone come tomorrow morning.

You can beat this in an hour? I'm not paying $15 for that.
The time it takes to beat is beside the point. This game is awful the fact that it's over so soon is a plus. That price is still outlandish.

Now if it were $15 for the most orgasmic Sonic experience ever I'd buy it twice to make sure they make an episode 2 even if it is just an hour long.

OMG DIFFERENT PHYSICS + GRAPHICS YOU DON'T LIKE = BAD GAME DESPITE ALL Of THE GOOD THINGS ABOUT IT.

But I do agree that I'm not playing $15 for something that short ever again, thankfully it's fun so there is a fair amount of replay value.

My ego...It's OVER 9000!
So I've played the demo about 6 times and I have some things to point out in terms of "The physics suck".

No they don't. It is true that you can crash into a loop and walk it out, and that you do not build up speed faster on a downward slope, but that doesn't matter much. Try replaying the levels to "learn" them a bit. You shouldn't have any problems once you do.

I hope you guys aren't judging the game off a single playthrough because that doesn't mix w/ any classic-like Sonic imo. And please don't rate the game lower because of the price. Would you honestly say Red Alarm on Virtual Boy was a good game if you got it for free at launch?

The physics are so different there is no point in calling this a Sonic game. Sonic is supposed to be the fastest thing alive not the adequately swift inertially thing that is questionably sentient.

Which reminds me. What did they do to Sonic's 'tude? He moves around levels like He's bored not even bothering to keep his legs together when He's launched into the air.

The graphics are bad because the level tiles look grainy and prerendered The worst kind of prerendered. They are missing the charm and effort of hand made sprites. The least they could have done was bump up the quality so it didn't have to look terrible.

On top of that the music is ear-grating. There are no memorable melodies in the stage BGM. Which is really disappointing after playing The Scott Pilgrim game and falling in love with the chiptunes music in that game.

Now for all the good things. They managed to keep Sonic some shade of blue. Aside from that I'm drawing a blank.

So this means that the Sonic Advances and Sonic Rushes aren't Sonic games either because they use different physics, right?

Someone who beats the **** out of robots nonchalantly sounds like someone who has a 'tude to me.

It looks pretty good on the PS3 version to me.

I have to agree that I didn't find the tunes particularly memorable but they aren't terrible.

You were one of those guys who *****ed about his eyes being green, weren't you?

God, I was complaining about the physics to my self. I had an incident where spindashing up a wall in Casino Street 2 wouldn't work. I had to WALK, yes, walk, to get past the wall.

Correct. That probably should have been called 'Blaze the Cat'. We're learning. Don't get me wrong it was a fun game outside of boss battles. (Which is More than I can say for this one)

I was talking about his idle animations. Sonic invented the idle animation. This game is supposed to be a throwback to the Genesis and Sonic has no Idle animation? (Someone back at SEGA is facepalming this at this fact as we read this.)

Probably, I made the mistake of getting the Wii version so bear with me.

They are on the Wii version but that was my fault and the Wii's.

Let's not get into that.

YES BECAUSE A LACK OF AN IDLE ANIMATION TOTALLY EFFECTS GAME PLAY.

Let's not get into that.
I'm taking this as a "Yes."

Needlessly nitpicking at bull**** that doesn't even matter to normal people is not helping your statement. I personally find the game to be incredibly fun after I got used to the new physics (although it is pretty lol worthy that Sonic can walk up a vertical wall easier than he can spin-dash up one) and I'm glad to say that it's worthy of the name "Sonic 4."

But it's not. That's the point.
Actually, yes it is. It's the best that they've made in the long time

People stop arguing over little things like OMG SONIC HAS GREEN EYES THIS GAME IS BAD AHHHHHHHHHH or GAWD SONIC'S PHYSICS IS DIFFERENT, LET'S ALL BASH ON IT.

Christ people, at least it's better than Sonic the Hedgehog 06. Do we really want something else like that? So stop complaining and be grateful that we got something better than that piece of crap game that is 06
