Something that I've wanted to try in tourney

This is just something small and harmless that I've wanted to try, nothing big or that would require all tourneys to change.

So, I'm sure a lot of you are online gamers. Melee will never be a primary online game. It's just the type of game where 1 frame of lag is unacceptable. In order to emulate an experience like that (and I do like the online game experience when it's at it's best.) Would be to have two TV's, back to back, facing opposite directions from each other. The cube is beside the TV's, and the video signal is split to both tv's. Both players are looking at their tv across from each other instead of sitting next to each other. This is just something I think would be cool, and I want to try it at a tournament if possible.

It would require two players who willingly want to do this. It wouldn't be practical for all the setups to be like this because it reduces the tv's by half, so there would only be a few setups like this or maybe only 1 if at that. Yes, I know some of your thoughts are "That reduces the social value of the tournament, etc" , something along those lines. That's not what I'm trying to do. I would actually want to play most of my matches sitting next to my opponent, but then again, something like this could help people who have nerves, can't look at their opponents face, want to vent their anger but can't while sitting next to their opponent. Plus at times I think it is awkward sitting really close to someone I am trying to beat. I usually don't think that, but just sometimes.

I've always wanted to do this in singles matches. I kinda feel like that's how tournaments should be

We've already been doing this for some teams matches in the Midwest. It's pretty epic to watch, especially in later sets and grand finals, and it provides space for teammates to discuss strategy privately. If you have a TV to spare, then go for it.

Oh nice, glad to see other people have been thinking the same way. I'll let you guys know how it works out when I do it.

I only like the idea in doubles. In singles I think hearing your opponents controller and being next to them makes the game different in a good way, also its easier that way to talk about bans/cp's easier after the match ends.

I always imagined it to be hard for in doubles for partners to communicate while their opponents are sitting right next to them, so I'm all for it for teams.

That would make me feel really anti-social. Not only am I at a video game tournament but I sit alone and play while I'm at it. Having said that, it would be pretty awesome :p.

I would like to see it tried without either side knowing who they're playing against. I think that would change confidence/nervousness levels in an interesting way. It would just be hard to do, like randomly two people get blindfolded and led over to the tv and told to go. Or something else overly ridiculous. Obviously this is too much to ask I'm just interested in the difference in performance lol.

Yeah I've been thinking about this too. Like when you go up to your next match, you don't know who your opponent is, so you don't know how good they are or anything. That would be so interesting lol. I would love this but I don't see how it's possible.

We did this in AZ. V3ctorman had a recording set-up like this for teams. It was super weird in singles, however.

Tai+Taj had the best teams moment in their lives against Rubyiris' Falco.

Good point. Aren't we sort of anti-social for playing video games instead of going to parties and stuff anyways? Then our social gatherings are video game tournaments and we end up sitting alone anyways.

I thought that was witty dude. ahahah

..But of course I'm speaking for myself in this manner

Yeah lol.. I put mentioned that in the OP. But that's besides the point. I'm very social at the tournament itself and wouldn't like the entire experience to be like that. It's sort of just an experimental thing that may cater towards a certain audience, who may appreciate it more than I. Although, I think it'd be really cool to try in singles. I couldn't care less about doubles, as it seems to be slightly popular based on the replies so far.

People really underestimate how much they use the sounds from the opponent's controller in singles. Even if you think you don't, you probably do.

For singles, yes this would be weird. but for doubles i think that this way will be better.... i for one hate being all the way on the edge; having to struggle to see the tv.

there's definitely something really cool about sitting next to someone, especially when both players get super into it and are trying their ***** off

My friend and I were playing Overtriforce and Strawhat Dahean to warm up. They spoke in Spanish. Neither my friend nor I are native speakers. Maybe instead of having secondaries, every team should just have a second language.

It's a bit harder to make sure everyone speaks a different language in American tournies than in European tournies :p

(not implying that it's particularly easy in European tournies)

Woah. That'd be sick.

I'd love to see a tournament done like that.

Puts another meaning in double blind :o

This would be absolutely awesome. Blind opponent side tourney, anyone?! Puts a whole new spin on what it truly means to adapt to your opponent.

Wow for teams, this would be awesome! But only for discussing strategy and such.
