Dang, I missed a pretty fun stage submission set. Oh well, I'll still vote:

1. Dinohatten
2. Mario Bros. Plumbing
3. Wood Door Hysteria

Classic Mode idea:
Super Star's Path
I don't have any kind of fully written plot blurb yet, but basically this will feature a simple story where the Star Spirits from Paper Mario (and Mario Party 5) are hoping to determine the true Super Star. All of these characters are competing to see who can be the last one standing...the Super Star.

It's a lot like Classic Mode as seen in Melee, where the opponents faced in each of the 8 rounds are randomly selected, although you'll occasionally get special rules such as defeating a Metal opponent or fighting two opponents at once. There will be two minigames included as well, both of which we can pick out later. The final round starts with a predetermined rival battle. Every character has a specific rival, so the cast is set into pairs. This rival only appears in the final round, even though all other opponents are randomized. After beating the rival, you will fight a boss to finish it up. I'm not sure how we'll handle bosses yet, whether it will be character-specific or also randomized. But there will be multiple bosses in the game.

After beating the boss, the Star Spirits declare your character the Super Star, and they get a short ending detailing what they do afterwards. The player then unlocks that character's trophy/spirit/whatever else we wanna use.

Classic Mode Formula:
The plot involves the Star Pieces from Super Mario RPG, with whoever collects all seven being granted a wish of their wildest dreams! As such, your character goes up against seven opponents (six rounds against a regular fighter(s) and one boss), each holding a Star Piece. Each route is designed around a certain theme pertaining to its character.

Upon a route's completion, a small cutscene plays depicting your character making a wish with the Star Pieces. What do they wish for? You'll need to beat the route to find out! You'll also gain a relevant collectible of your character (trophy, spirit. etc.)

Round 1: Regular opponent(s)
Round 2: Regular opponent(s)
Round 3: Regular opponent(s)
Bonus Game
Round 4: Regular opponent(s)
Round 5: Regular opponent(s)
Round 6: Regular opponent(s)
Boss Battle

My classic sub: Rudy's Big Top Brawl!

The battles you encounter are preset, but the characters and stages within are not. The battles have a theme of being a show, so crowd cheers and chants are much more common and the UI has an exclusive circus theme. on Very Easy only default costumes show up, On Easy, all alt characters can show up (so Builder Mario no, Roy Koopa yes for example), on Medium "main" alts only show up (so both Roy Koopa and Builder Mario, but no pink Luigi), on hard all alts can show up, and on very hard, only recolours will show up (including recolours of alts like Luigi 64 Mario)

  1. 1v1 on any stage with low items
  2. 2v2 on any stage with low items
  3. 3 player free for all on any stage with medium items
  4. 4v4 on any stage with medium items
  5. Bonus: Board the Platforms
  6. 4 player free for all with high items
  7. 2v2v2v2 on any stage with high items
  8. 8 player free for all on any stage with very high items
  9. 1v1 on foe-specific Battlefield stage with no items
  10. Boss: Rudy the Clown on a character-specific Omega stage (same stage your character would be fought against on if they were the opponent in #9) Rudy is the sole boss for all fighters. He functions like Master and Crazy. On lower difficulties he alternates between hands instead of just one, but on higher he uses both. Regardless of stage theme, all Rudy bosses will use the "Hurry Up!" remix from Wario's Castle

Cappy move subs are closed!
Cappy Tornado (replaces FLUDD)

Mario Tornado is back in the Special slot, and it's got disjoint power thanks to Cappy! Mario's pre-Brawl dair would also return because of it (hey, it says "a single move that would bring Cappy!")
Cappy Move: Cap Toss (Netural B)
I know it's a bit controversial to get rid of the iconic Fireball, but hopefully I can make my reasoning clear.
Mario tosses his cap forward, Cappy's eyes appearing as he does so. Cappy will stay in place at the length of a BF platform from Mario for two seconds before returning. If Cappy touches an opponent at any time between being thrown and coming back to Mario, Mario will instantly snap him back on in a quick motion, like how Terry snaps back his cap in Fatal Fury. The toss is much faster than Fireballs, but the long hitbox makes up for that. Mario touching the hat while its hovering in place will just lead to him putting it back on immediately. Hitting an opponent has the same effect as them being hit by a Fireball.
Speaking of which, ever since I was a kid I was annoyed that Mario could shoot fireballs in Smash without a Fire Flower (ignoring his Fire Mario alt). I'm not as bothered by it anymore but it still feels odd. Also, he already has his forward smash which is a pretty iconic move at this point and can be representative of Mario's fire. That is all.

Criteria voting is over! The winner is...

A non-platforming character!

Submit a non-platforming fighter!

For this job, please submit a character who has never been in a platforming game. Characters who debuted in non-platformers but have gone on to appear in them (Toadette and Undodog for example) aren't allowed, nor are characters with the opposite scenario. (Petey Piranha or the already-present Daisy and Baby Bros) Get it Together and RPGs with platforming elements will not be considered a platformer, nor will any smaller minigames from games like WarioWare or Mario Party. SMM1 Mystery Mushrooms don't disqualify, costumes will only disqualify if it is a variant character. (like Chef Mario for example)

I was stuck between submitting Penny or this guy...
Mr. Crayon

Mr. Crayon is a character from Mario Paint and one of the few original creations from it not to reappear in Super Mario Maker. While he was designed to be a stubby crayon, in this game he will be portrayed as what his shape makes him morso resemble - an ink blob! He would shapeshift into different, creative forms - most of which would reference Mario Paint and Mario Artist.

Non-Platforming Character: MC Ballyhoo (Mario Party 8)

[insert hilarious and not at all dated mpds anti-piracy joke here]

MC Ballyhoo (as well as his sentient top hat, Big Top), is the host of Mario Party 8, and has has pretty much no appearances of note ever since besides cameos. As the self-proclaimed Master of Catastrophe, he runs the Star Carnival and all of its attractions.

In SMSB, MC Ballyhoo could use various elements of Mario Party games, such as Dice Blocks, items, and references to the series’ famous minigames!

Fawful
We've had a lot of wacky outside picks lately, not that there's anything wrong with that, but it would be good to throw in a common fan request. And the Mario and Luigi games deserve and a rep and Fawful is hands down the stand out character from those games imo.

Stage voting will close shortly. Speaking of stages...

Submit a "home stage" for Dr. Mario

Dr. Mario is missing a stage, so how about we give him one? Now, the catch here is that this doesn't have to be a stage based on the game "Dr. Mario" - it just has to fit the character Dr. Mario even if indirectly. This means you can use as many or little of these themes as you desire - just make sure at least one of these themes is used.
  1. Falling blocks
  2. Puzzle games or segments
  3. Medicine
  4. Exercise
  5. Education
  6. Microorganisms
  7. Bodies
  8. Illness
  9. Checkerboard backgrounds
  10. Colour-themed hazards

Prince Froggy's Belly

This falls under #7. This is a cramped, circular arena where you can only KO out the bottom. (accompanied by a fart sound!) The uvula functions like a bumper, and makes KOs a bit easier. If knocked into a wall; floor; or ceiling hard you can create a small dent that makes more space to fight. Occasionally a fly will be swallowed by Froggy to be used as a platform, but this is relatively rare. When one stock or half a minute remains the belly will change colours,

Non-platformer character:
1647622687881.png

Foreman Spike
Here to represent Wrecking Crew (and also apparently the Mario Movie!?) is Mario's antagonistic foreman. He'll have a hammer-centric moveset that could also possibly implement building walls, ladders, and bombs to destroy.

Dr. Mario stage:
1647622792585.png

Simply titled Dr. Mario, this stage's design was built for a Smash Wii U mod and was once passed as a fake DLC leak that fooled me as a 15-year-old. My version is visually identical but takes some original ideas for its gimmicks. The stage is generally flat, but giant megavitamins will fall from the sky periodically to serve as temporary platforms (and to damage fighters as they fall). Viruses also appear as platforms, but also as enemies that can be defeated if attacked. The locations of the Viruses and the pills match with the Dr. Mario gameplay occurring in the background. You always know when a pill will appear because the good doctor will throw one in the background.

You're in for a treat so hang on to your seat, Mario Brothers Plumbing is joining the stage list! Get ready for some kooky cameos from the public domain in this grimy workshop! We may be moving over some songs from Yoshi's Island Melee and/or Mushroom Kingdom Melee to this.

Additionally, Cappy Tornado is Mario's new Down B, replacing FLUDD.

Inside Boswer

Another Mario and Luigi suggestion from me. Takes place inside Bowser from Bowser's Inside story. In terms of lay out it would be pretty similar to Brinstar from Smash, though much less dark and with gross fleshy platforms. Stomach acid will sometimes rise up to act as a hazard. It makes sense for a Doctor to have a stage dealing with stomach issues, don't you think?

The Undo Dog is originally from Mario Paint, which is decidedly not a platformer, but rather an art program. I imagine he would do a lot of moves themed after painting, erasing, other various things that are stamps within Mario Paint, music composing, or even the Flyswatter mini-game. As well, I guess there’s a potential gimmick in “undoing” others’ moves somehow.

Ahh never mind, I looked and read up further. Here’s a substitute submission.
1647656599474.jpeg

Aqualea and Meidou are from Wario’s Woods, a puzzle game. They are mermaids, and probably supposed to be the same mermaid, so they would probably just be alts. for each other. Being mermaids inherently means they would move very uniquely. Other than that, I have no clue.

Submit movesets for Dixie Kong and/or Timber!

pictured here: Dixie Kong in a plane and hovercraft, things she will not be able to drive in this game.
Please submit movesets for Dixie Kong and/or Timber. Remember that Timber shares a moveset with the other Diddy Kong Racers and must fight in a car. You are allowed to use some elements from Diddy Kong for Dixie, or even submit a semi-clone moveset, but she must be distinct on the level of Luigi or Lucas at minimum.

By the way, Classic Mode voting will close shortly

Dixie Kong Moveset
  • Neutral Special: Gumball Popgun
    • Dixie Kong fires a shot from her Gumball Popgun, which flies forwards as a projectile. Despite being a reskin of Diddy's Peanut Popgun in Tropical Freeze, that will not be the case here. For starters, the Gumball Popgun cannot be overcharged like the Peanut Popgun, so there's no risk of it blowing up in Dixie's face. To compensate for this, however, it has less power and is a smaller projectile. But hey, the hitstun is increased, as opponents will be covered in gum for a moment after being hit.
  • Side Special: Ponytail Flip
    • A similar move to the Monkey Flip, with Dixie somersaulting forwards while curled up, but there are a few differences. For starters, Dixie cannot grab any opponents, instantly knocking them away upon contact. To compensate, however, the move does cover more range and deals just a bit more damage.
  • Up Special: Helicopter Spin
    • Dixie's signature ability - She uses her ponytail as a helicopter blade to propel herself upwards before entering a gliding state (similar to that of Peach, but with more horizontal speed).
  • Down Special: Chord
    • Dixie takes out her guitar and strums a note, causing a soundwave around herself which paralyzes/launches opponents. The move grows stronger the longer it goes unused, essentially making it a weaker version of the Wario Waft.
Timber Moveset
Before I get into Timber's specials, I want to pitch a weird mechanic for him. Upon entering the water, Timber's car enters a hovercraft form (for this game, his vehicle can transform ala the cars in Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed). While this leaves him unable to drown like most fighters, it does give him a larger swimming hurtbox.
  • Neutral Special: Missile
    • Using the Red Balloon item from Diddy Kong Racing, Timber shoots a rocket from the front of his car. A simple tap of the special button has the rocket fly straight forwards, while holding the button will have it charge up for a moment before homing in on the nearest player in front of Timber. Either way, it's essentially Samus' side special.
  • Side Special: Speed Boost
    • Partially inspired by the Blue Balloons from DKR, Timber begins to rev his car's engine before rocketing forward, bowling over opponents in his path. Charging up the move increases its range, but keep in mind that Timber cannot turn around or cancel the move until the car returns to its normal speed.
  • Up Special: Plane Mode
    • Timber's car is converted into a plane, which proceeds to fly diagonally upwards, after which it reverts to its car form, leaving Timber in an odd sort of freefall state; He cannot use any special attacks, but normal attacks and dodges are still A-OK.
  • Down Special: Mine
    • Using the Green Balloon's item, a mine pops out of the back of Timber's car, exploding once an opponent touches it. However, only one mine can be on-screen per Timber.

Rudy is officially disconfirmed for playable status (meaning he can't be submitted), but that's not set in stone as I plan to have a discussion later into development on how a playable form could be handled if at all

Subs for Dr. Mario's stage are closed - we've got a pretty gruesome lineup this time, literally! Please vote based on which stage you like most, not necessarily which fits the prompt better - a direct Dr. Mario stage is still on the cards even if Torgo's submission loses.

Crate Substitute: ? Block

A fairly obvious pick, but I think it makes the most sense.

Unique Container: Roulette Block

This item would cycle through five predetermined items picked from a pool, with the current item indicated within the block itself. Upon being broken, whatever item which was currently displayed on the block will be the item that pops out.
