Not sure why spirits would be compared to the box theory. That theory was at least based on something real that could be pointed to as actual evidence. The "spirits deconfirm characters" logic doesn't really have anything actually backing it up at this point on the other hand on top of there not having been any rock solid logic on why a piece of likely copy/pasted art would keep the team from working on a character later.
