Something to note. Apparently Cloud was THE last veteran to add to the roster. Square Enix is known to be stingy, but this is interesting to note.
Also if you look through Stealths tweets, 700 Spirits is the total and there are No Square Enix Spirits out of the 500 known.

And before some goes 'But GENO!!!' They were shown as a battle icon for online NOT a Spirit.

Assuming that the Japanese voice actors weren't the issue, it's probably the fact that they could carry over most Guidance recordings from Smash 4, but let's go ahead and blame Sakubias anyway.

She's specifically a Fighter Spirit.

We've seen alternate versions of the playable cast as equipable Spirits, but no straight up "this character who is also playable can be equipped as a spirit".

Is there really any difference between Geno being a battle icon and a Spirit? Nintendo had to get permission either way.

I think Colonel's Japanese VA is still around, but even then, Ultimate is a universal build and not like how Brawl was segmented for other countries, so I see Colonel's English VA not around anymore being the biggest problem for Codecs.

I mean, you can't really get mad, but it does suck all around. :/

You know, I don't think being a Spirit makes it impossible for a character to be DLC. They can always just remove the spirit after adding the new character. If it is a World of Light spirit, they can just replace the spot where you got the spirit with a spot where you can fight the actual character. And since there are hundreds upon hundreds of Spirits, losing one doesn't make a major difference to the game overall.

So I don't think being a spirit deconfirms a character's DLC potential, but I do think that people should temper their expectations.

I think if we have a franchise represented by spirits, but not a fighter, and there is a major character from that franchise not represented as a spirit in the game, such characters are the most likely DLC candidates. For example, we've seen several rabbids as spirits - has anyone seen Rayman?

If Rayman is not in the game as a spirit, I think he'd be very likely as DLC.

I don't think we'll get a Fire Emblem newcomer as DLC, but if we do get Edelgard... I hope we'll get Byleth as a Marth clone.

Why the **** does Square still own Geno?
Nintendo is an infinitely bigger company. It wouldn't cost too much just to buy rights to A FEW ****ING CHARACTERS. Oh, especially those that ARE ONLY IN A ****ING MARIO GAME.

This is no fight friend. I am not gonna rule it out that he could be a Spirit.
Until we see him equipped onto the Mii Gunner with the Geno Costume on shooting rainbows out of his mouth, it is technically still up in the air.

Also I am just happy to know that Geno could be the ONLY Square Spirit.
