Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

main thing is that its mostly modifiers to in game content, rather than full on importing new models. the most difficult thing would be the custom ai some of them have, but, and i could definitely be wrong, i don't think "spam grab" is that difficult to code?

i don't really understand why there would be this gacha system is there weren't Lots of them. it seems built to make sure you won't be seeing the same spirits multiple times soon, which would be weird for a smaller number of them. if there is only a small number of them though, like, where did the dev time go for this game? obviously didn't go into making any new characters or adding extra content to it
This is a fair point. I suppose if they don't have descriptions like trophies do, then that all makes sense. Either way, I'm excited to see what they pulled off with these battles.

I had a great day overall.

Happy at high school, a lot of great marks, Guile’s theme published on the Ultimate website and another neat talk on this forum.

FFVII Remake is in a similar case to Kingdom Hearts 3 pre-Final Fantasy 15. Square Enix is focusing on Kingdom Hearts 3 right now, and will shift focus to FFVII Remake when its finished.
Would make sense. Though SE really does need to make sure its projects are within a feasible amount of time from announcement rather than announcing pretty much as soon as the project starts. Makes it hard to stay hype for one of their games when the announcement is over a decade from launch. lol

I can understand the slow development of FFVII remake.

After all, Square is a third party company, and there’s only a certain amount of stuff that they can pull at once.

Octopath Traveller proved that they still know how to make wonderful games, so i believe that KH3 won’t dissapoint.

KH3 is especially bad about this, it has been over 10 years since the last numbered installment ( the game we got teased at the end of 2 ended up being Birth By Sleep) and in that time not one but TWO (probably more) major english voice actors in the game (Leonard Nimoy and Sir Christopher Lee) have passed.

The statements made by Sakurai about how the DLC has been finished has me intrigued, because he states that this time NINTENDO chose the characters THEN ASKED SAKURAI if they could be turned into characters. This is telling me a lot and makes me wonder how the DLC process worked on Smash 4 (save for Bayonetta being a "ballot winner"). Nintendo choosing the characters tells me that either they want their own IPs to shine this time around since the DLC for Smash was so third party heavy, or they are picking third party characters THEY either seem right or because they want to represent how close they are now with certain third parties thanks to the success of the Switch.

As for speculating the DLC, I am legit done because the madness caused by the leak scene made me anxious to the point of annoyance so I will take what they will give me. HOWEVER, this is the only thing I will speculate;

- The Square Enix Rep; Now ALL leaks, even the mighty Vergeben leaks, have stated that there will be one new Square Rep, and it makes sense to me that they would be DLC since that way Nintendo can cover licensing costs and get as much content as they can. The main two that come to mind are Geno and Sora. Both are highly requested characters that are also legacy characters with history on Nintendo consoles and both have a plethora of music tracks and worlds to choose from to turn into stages. Now if Nintendo wants to focus more on the games that they themselves had a hand on, I feel they would pick Geno because that WAS their first joint venture with Square. I know that we saw him as a Spirit in the trailers and footage, but we also know that playable characters can also be spirits (like Super Sonic being a spirit). So geno has basically a 45% chance of being that DLC.

Then there's Sora. Now, if Nintendo is the one calling the shots as to who gets in, I feel they would dismiss him outright because even though they have gotten several games that are canon to the Kingdom Hearts storyline, the big game, Kingdom Hearts III, is a PS4/Xbox One release, and Square has NOT released the HD port of all the games on the Switch (which is a missed opportunity). But at the same time, the appeal of the character is too high and it would attract a lot of Kingdom Hearts players who have never played Smash to the game, plus would create a lot of revenue for Square and Nintendo.

But we also forget that Square Enix is more than just Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts; they also have Dragon Quest and American IPs like Tomb Raider and Life is Strange. Since Dragon Quest has been a very Nintendo focus franchise for Square as of late, I could see them choosing a Dragon Quest character. Now all signs point to Slime, but even though he is a mascot character that best represents Dragon Quest, he is almost on the same level as Petey Pirhana in that he would be a tad too bland for DLC, so I am going with one of the major characters from that franchise.

- The Microsoft Rep; This is where my fanboy mind splits into two trains of thought;
1. If Nintendo truly has been that close with Microsoft and have discussed things with Phil Spenncer, then there is the chance that the Microsoft rep could be Banjo-Kazooie after all. Banjo started life off on a Nintendo system, and even with the re-releases of the games on Xbox systems people still associated them with Nintendo far more than Microsoft. So if Nintendo were to choose from third party characters that has more of a legacy with them, I see them picking Banjo Kazooie as DLC...

HOWEVER...

Minecraft keeps popping in leaks, rumor mills and such, but the information is that SOME Minecraft content is in the game, but has not been stated as to what it is. It could literally be anything at this point; an assist trophy, a spirit, a stage, or Steve as a character. This is where my fanboy mind goes into the cynical train of thought. Regardless of how we feel about Minecraft as a whole, it is hard to deny that it has become an iconic franchise for this generation of gamers, and Microsoft has been very lucrative with it. Plus, the game has more entries on Nintendo systems that Banjo-Kazooie has as of late. My conclusion? Microsoft really wants to push the franchise that is still making them money and Nintendo wants something that is more tied to them than any other Microsoft IP. So the cynic in me says that Steve from Minecraft could very well be DLC.

The problem, though, is that Steve and Minecraft as a whole is built around the idea of user creation. The franchise HAS a lot and even a bit of a sound to it, but everything is user generated. Steve is a literal blank canvas that would make his inclusion seem anti-climatic, especially considering the price we will pay for his inclusion. But the cynic in me says that he might be in.

As for the remaining three....it can go everywhere to be honest. It can go to another third party character Nintendo has close ties to, or a Nintendo IP they personally want to focus on (like Daemon X or whatever that mech game is). The bottom line for ALL characters, though, is that they have to be worthy of the price we are paying for, so the selections must have been great enough for Nintendo to say "this is it, we want them in" and Sakurai said "yes sir!"

TL:DR; the Square rep could be anyone at this point, fans want Banjo but MS may want Steve as the MS representative, the remaining three could be literally anyone at this point, leaks and rumors be darned.

Since we're talking about Spirits, I might as well report this since it got buried

I spent the last four days working on this incredibly detailed Spirit spreadsheet. After this, I think I am the foremost expert on Spirits that hasn't actually developed the game. So if anyone is interested, i dunno ask me questions?

There's definitely some interesting details going on, though I could still use some help. There's a few Spirits I haven't been able to figure out who they are, I put one of them in the spreadsheet since I could translate his name, but I have no idea where he's from or if that even is his actual name. He's an old man listed as Xianren, near the bottom of it. The second one I have no info for and just a picture, which is this boy.

There's also a yoga pose i can't figure out but nobody is going to figure it out

Holy **** man it was such a blatant ****post and you type all this. I don't know whether to snark at you or be impressed you always try to cram a lot of words in posts
You are already snarking and not aware of it. The fact that people are usually never satisfied with the final roster is always something that has plagued Smash Bros. titles at the time of release.

I think honestly though, there is probably more satisfaction with this roster than there was with Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4. Traditionally, much of the anger with the final roster has been with cuts. Mewtwo and Roy being cut caused a lot bitterness with the final roster, as did Lucas, Snake, Wolf, and Ice Climbers being gone from Smash 4's final roster. Heck, Sakurai made a comment saying all characters coming back is what he thought the fans wanted. I would not be surprised if Ice Climbers, Snake, and Wolf were all within the Top 10 for the ballot (with possibly two of them in the Top 5), while Pichu, Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Young Link all made surprisingly good showings.

The other reason for a lack of bitterness is there is no longer any series staples for people to point to as an obvious absence for the roster. With Smash 4, people thought it was ridiculous Ridley and no DK newcomer had happened. By comparison, the characters who are left who seem to have a massive following among the "core" are characters whose heyday was from a time when many of the posters of this forum where either toddlers or not even born yet. Not really much of a case to be made for why Sakurai committed an "injustice" by not including them (no offense to supporters of those characters).

The third reason is that we already know right off the bat that DLC is coming and even how many DLC slots we will be getting, this gives people who are dissatisfied with a lack of newcomers on the roster something more to look forward.

Clones, typically an object of derision for roster inclusion going back to Melee, now are all well-received. Why is that? Because they are all characters that are popular within their respective franchises.

I think had it not been for the Grinch leak, there would have been FAR less backlash to Ultimate's final set of newcomers than what happened with Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4. I still think Incineroar would have been met with grumbles, and Pirahna Plant with groans, but otherwise people would have seen that they were already given a pretty phenomenal roster especially given how Sakurai had warned them for months about less newcomers this time around. The picks in general were incredible.

It's not the feather that was the problem, it was that the feather came from a game that was arguably based off the stereotype of the "savage Indian". If it weren't for that game it was based off I doubt the controversy would have gained much traction.
No, I have no opinion on the feather.

I just tried to give the point of view of one of the "defended minorities" since the poster is claiming the movement is an act of good (it is good but misguided and hypocritical, imo). Anyway, that is the last bit I bring on the subject.

Going back to the topic, has anyone since footage or reported changes on Duck Hunt? I havent seen anything about the character and I want to know if the character has received mostly positive changes, if it has stayed the same or if it is getting mostly nerfs like Bowser Jr.

Actually, Square-Enix is just unlucky, never once they announced a project when "it just start".

The roots of their planning missmanagement comes back all the way back to the Fabula Nova Crystallis game trilogy with FFXIII/FF Versus XIII (XV)/ Project Agito (Type-0) and the first version of FF XIV. At first, everything went smoothly for the development of all of those titles but soon, FFXIII had to **** the bed and had disastrous internal problem with the engine. The team from both Versus XIII and Agito got pulled from their project to help quickly and continue the development of the game for like 2 years.
Then FFXIII was released, they all went back to work...Then came FFXIV.

Guess what? FFXIV 1.0 was a disaster too, and the team of Versus XIII and the Ex-member of FFXIII had to come and help fixing the game. During that time, Agito became Type-0 and it's development went smoothly, explaining why it went out normally. But a good part of the FF versus XIII team was still helping managing FFXIV. And another part went to help to end the FFXIII trilogy with XIII-2 and Lightning Return. Leaving a barebore team for Nomura to work with... Then they all were over and FINALLY. FF Versus XIII went full development and became FF XV and had a good start... But Nomura got pulled out from the project, replaced by Tabata who was kinda done since Type-0 to work on KH III who had a whole new engine...And guess what?
They ****ed up too, but instead of asking other team to help it, since Square-Enix probably would never want FFXV to get delayed AGAIN, they went to use Unreal Engine 4.

As for the Remake of FFVII, while it's announcement was a surprise for Nomura, it supposedly wasn't for Kitase, Hashimoto and others, and CyberConnect 2 were on the project and supposedly were working...Smoothly.
Until CyberConnect 2 **** the bed and Square-Enix thinks the quality of their product was awful, going back to 0 and doing FFVIIR in house.

Like really...It's not that Square-Enix are bad with announcement or anything...Maybe they're a bit too quick on the draw but to put it simple.

They're ****ing unlucky ever since FFXIII went it comes to development crisis. But hey- ever since that Engine change, KH III have no issue, and for playing the game like 6 times on Demo, it will look and play absolutely fantastically.

It doesn't really matter that he's a blank canvas in Minecraft because Steve's personality in Smash would be "Minecraft". Steve in Minecraft and Steve in Smash are two very different things.

It was announced 4 years later. And since it probably took them about a year to be able to present at E3, this game would've been in production for 7 years.

That's alot of time for a game like Kingdom Hearts that's more linear. Heck SE was able to make an MMORPG and make a massive updated version in just half the time.

Question though. Can you name at least one Native American (one drop rule doesn't apply has to be more than 1/1024th) who was offended by the Game and Watch thing? I actually am friends with a few cherokee's and they had no issues with it.
Ah, the old "I'm friends with a minority, and they have no issues with it" defence.

Nice

Then again youre from REEEEEEra, home of whites being offended for everyone else..

Tbh, i like the fact that they censored it, but i am a little dissapointed about the way they did so.

I would have liked to see that sprite turned into the version from the GBA remake (which was censored too), but Nintendo just took the feather off.

I see a Direct Mini with details about the N64 Mini and the reveal of a new F-Zero likely.

Of course, the latter done in a similar style to Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3.

Wow this sure is a lot of political and social talk.
The old

Retort. Clearly you are the White Savior! What were they thinking!
Okay so even if no one is actively in uproar about an issue, it should still be listed as insensitive if it indeed is insensitive, just for future reference. But MAYBE being snarky over sociopolitical issues is not a thing you guys should be doing on a Smash Brothers website.

Yes, but how does that make me incorrect? I got friends who are native american didn't have a problem with Game and Watch, and if i can have non-white friends clearly that means i am accepting enough of non-whites to not be a racist sooooo..... Yeah. Nontroversy.

So where's this new N64 Classic leak?

I saw something about Nintendo relisting game manuals but unfortunately it was just the Wii U VC list which we went over in the Banjo-Kazooie thread in September.
