I do find some of the recent Geno discussion... peculiar. I dunno if it's just people puffing up their chests after not making it into the game, but saying stuff like "he completes the hype triangle with K. Rool and Ridley!" or "it's not Ultimate without him!" just feels very post-hoc.
While understandably Geno was a highly anticipated character for this Smash discussion and it's perfectly normal to be disappointed that he wasn't in, I don't think treating niche side characters as superstars sets realistic expectations. While I don't know why Geno didn't make it (other than possibly Square blocking it), I think Geno has been oversold substantially in speculation in terms of the character's significance, and while it might suck that he didn't make it, it's good to remember how minor of a character he really is and how impressive it is that he got what he got (a costume and recognition from Sakurai).
The Grinch leak definitely didn't help. It felt like we were all ready to accept Box Theory as being all-but-real, then for a single week the Grinch raised people's hopes only for them to come crashing down.
...even though personally, the character they announced was more hype than any non-bear on that fake roster.
