Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I honestly don't think the wait will be for much longer. Early November is pretty much right around the corner.

"Children's series Pokemon appeals to Kids, fans furious, more at 11."

You guys just grew up.
That's not it at all.
I don't like the Pokemon Go mechanics in this game, simple as that. I've replayed several other Pokemon games this year and I loved it.
I haven't outgrown Pokemon at all. And I never will.

I don't think kids are necessarily dumber than before (more coddled, maybe), but games are definitely having to compete with more and more things (and kids are as a result less willing to put up with bull**** difficulty).

*starts old man rant about how good it was "in my day"*

*cue "four yorkshiremen" sketch*

I mean, we already have FEH music...

I'm hoping for Pokémon Shuffle music.
Ah I didn't mean to say kids are dumber. I was actually trying to say they aren't dumber. Sorry, my phone hates me

2 weeks to a Smash fan is like 2 months normal time man.

It's our first world problem.

It’s so interesting to me that so many people swear they’re hyped for Smash and come onto Smashboards, but then decide to repeatedly not talk about Smash in this thread.

Amazing.

Anyway, I must say that I think Nintendo missed the boat with marketing for this game. I don’t have much experience running a company (see zero percent), but based on work experience elsewhere I have an idea of how to keep stuff on the minds of your consumer. While Smash builds itself up regardless of when it’s announced, I still have to facepalm just a little bit that we just might not be getting substantial news for...almost 3 months.

I don’t even mean for the insatiable fans, I mean the ones that are aware of it but don’t follow the blog, break down tweets from youtubers, or make predictions on things. Your average fan.

For all we know, your average fan may have simply missed that Isabelle is in the game. Doubtful, sure, but it’s still bizarre to me that the only crumbs of new info are through blog posts.
Honestly, from my more casual friends, Isabelle was the one newcomer they knew about in detail because of the huge explosion over on Twitter. The others they heard about more vaguely.

The big directs are great sure, they give a lot of info all at once, but I still think that a much smaller, more constant info drip is needed so more casual fans see more of Smash.

Most big games (on the level of Smash) I see nowadays have T.V ad slots, billboard ads, constant trailers and gameplay. Smash doesn't really follow that for whatever reason. They stick with directs and that's it.

90% of the gameplay videos we have are from a pre-E3 build. That's absolutely mind-boggling to me.

It's tough to grasp how people can go "YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR THINKING THE MARKETING ISN'T AMAZING" when we've gone almost 3 months with literally one character reveal in-between

At least we still get tough games on the side. Take FOTNS: Lost Paradise, for example. Based on a manga property aimed towards boys back in the 80s, still gets harder the further you get into the game.

Just for future reference, some stuff are best left in our heads...
I know that feeling all too well...

I'm not actually angry about Let's Go, just dissapointed. That said, I really think the pessimism surrounding 2019 is really unfair. Let's at least wait until we get some info on that game before we start throwing a fit over it, alright?

Anyway, regarding Smash Bros, what mii costumes do you hope to see this time? I'm personally really hoping for a Shovel Knight costume for Mii Swordfighter now that it's a real possibility.

I just don't want Pokemon Go to infect the mainline games.
Calm your mammaries, it won't. It's a pretty casual spinoff for casual players in the casual audience. I wonder what audience Pokemon Go has?
If you're worried about Pokemon with mobile games, you should be far more worried about Animal Crossing if you're gonna put tinfoil on your head.

Gamers in general seem to not understand how the hell spinoffs work. Spinoffs are games that break way from some of the traditions and conventions of the main series in order to explore the series in a new way. That's it. But every time a spinoff is announced for some series, people get up in arms like it's some kind of proclamation that everything is going to change.

No, Fallout is not going to become a multiplayer game just because Fallout 76 has multiplayer. It's a spinoff.

No, Pokemon is not going to become super casual just because Let's Go is handholdy. It's a spinoff.

Just like Resident Evil didn't become a competitive shooter because of Umbrella Corps, or Metroid didn't become a co-op series because of Federation Force, or Metal Gear becoming an action game because of Revengeance.

Ironically, people like to laugh and jeer at Call of Duty for "being the same thing every year," but whenever any other franchise shows signs of changing up the formula, people go nuts.
People gave Assassin's Creed **** for being the same thing every year

and then they went nuts when Origins and Odyssey happened

I wonder if it's tougher or easier for someone who's been Homeschooled?..
wasn't homeschooled but was friends with people in college who were (just graduated). it was funny: easier about some things (they knew more than a lot of us who went to public school), but I think they had a harder time getting into the rhythms of school right away. Different for everyone, though, I'm sure you'll be fine

I'm really excited to see what third party ones they decide to include. I'd love a Nightmare costume, or if you want to go REAL crazy, a Master Chief one.

You know speaking of Pokemon, you ever find it weird that we never got a Pokeball item?
Like, not a pokeball that summons a pokemon when you throw it, but just a straight up pokeball that catches whatever its thrown at for some budges before they break out?

Can't help but feel there's a Pokemon discussion thread somewhere on these Boards folks
...is there?
I totally aided in derailing and I apologize but I attempted to put at least one smash topic in each post.

But yea Noipoi's post proves my point from the other day that users here just don't know what's available.

Really I'm sorry, this isn't a Pokemon discussion thread and I'll refrain from continuing the discussion.

Based on many of my not at all hard core smash fans, so this is clearly an accurate representation of the general population, people are more hyped and just as aware of this game as fans on here.

Seriously almost all of my non-hardcore fans pissed themselves at Isabelle's reveal and are all generally excited to get/play the game. They just don't talk about it everyday.

This games marketing isn't built for us, which I already mentioned yesterday is a fault of Nintendo / Sakurai for making the last 2 games marketing about the hardcore fans. But this game has been marketed enough to casuals in my opinion.

Because it's been over a month since there's been any new information, and that new information was just one character reveal. Everything's been talked about to death already.

Nintendo was great with marketing the Switch itself, but some of their game marketing has been lackluster. Though I imagine that there will be more clout leading up to December 7, after Black Ops IIII and RDR2 have had their time in the spotlight. Advertising the game heavily right now is just going to have it get lost in the shuffle. It'll be best marketed in late November and all December, when the most sales are going to be generated anyways.

However, they have been demoing the game significantly since E3, and that's pretty powerful marketing. It gets people to experience the game and talk about it with other people, and word-of-mouth is the best kind of marketing there is. Seeing an ad on a website or on TV isn't going to leave as much of an impression as someone you know recommending the game to you.

My favorite example of this is in late 2011/early 2012 with Skyrim and Mass Effect 3. Skyrim came out four months before Mass Effect 3, but after Mass Effect 3's first week, its sales plummeted once word got around about its terrible ending. Meanwhile, Skyrim was still selling highly for months, and sold more than Mass Effect 3 after that first week, because word of mouth kept going around and people kept talking about it.

Pokemon games are for kids unless you start playing them in a Smogon context, in which case they are very certainly a game for people with developed brains.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to play Pokemon. The gameplay is extremely nuanced, and without a solid grasp of tactical strategy most of the battles will go over a typical player's head. There's also Oak's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Kafka literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these battles, to realize that they're not just fun- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike competitive Pokemon truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the depth in the Breeder's existencial catchphrase "Your Pokemon seem to like each other very much!," which itself is a cryptic reference to Chesterton's "The Everlasting Man". I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Junichi Matsuda's genius unfolds itself on their Nintendo 3DS. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a Pikachu tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 Rank points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

The Moon.

Just a normal Mii body, with an over sized Moon head. Terrifying face included.

Isabelle still one of the first tags Tumblr suggests when you search for Super Smash Bros. Not a universal measure, but I suspect that she didn't flew under the radar of majority of the casual fandom.

Other than that, it's just this game's direction. While there are a lot of stuff for casual fans, general direction is heavily catered towards Smash fandom, not general Nintendo audience who might find Smash cool.

Listen, if I can't murder both Arceus and Ghiratina in the next Pokemon game, then what's even the point?

I think this can also sometimes be a positive, forgive the anecdote but hear me out.

I stopped keeping up with smash 4 before release pretty late, I didn’t know Shulk was in, nor B.jr, not even Duck Hunt

So when I bought Smash 3DS, and I saw all these characters that I didn’t even know were in the game, it really was a magical experience. I specifically remember spectating an online game, seeing a Koopaling and thinking “wait what?” and it really was exciting.

Nobody is going to buy smash for Isabelle, or not buy it if it doesn’t have her, so maybe that joyful surprise means that ignorance really is bliss in this case.

Just my 2 cents though.

God that sounds awesome. The wonder I would've felt if I saw Morton Koopa going up against Dr. Mario with no prior knowledge...
