Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I'm not sure if Nintendo will even win NEXT year. They never seem to win GotY unless it's something as mindblowing as Breath of the Wild...

I desperately want it to be Yoshi's Crafted World
I’ll happily settle for Yoshi Crafted World to be good. Haven’t truly enjoyed a Yoshi series game since Yoshi’s Story (though Island DS had its moments)

Here we go:

Konami: Bill Rizer (Contra)
Sega: Joe Musashi (Shinobi series)
Bandai Namco: Sophitia (Soul Calibur)
Square Enix: Erdrick/Eight/Luminary/Descendant (Dragon Quest) or Crono (basically, Square-Enix + Akira Toriyama here)
Ubisoft: Rayman
Activision: Crash
KoeiTecmo: Ryu Hayabusa
Capcom: Nathan Spencer (Bionic Commando)
Blizzard: Orc (too sleepy to remember a hero Orc) (Warcraft 2)
Bethesda: Doomguy

For third party I’m only really interested in Banjo-Kazooie, Rayman, Doomguy, Lara Croft, and some Persona/SMT representation (Jack Frost, Joker, Flynn, Demi-Fiend).

Anyone else is cool but don’t really care either way. Still have lots of Nintendo characters I’m rooting for

Man, replaying through Metroid: Fusion on my old Gameboy is bringing back my memories with the system.
Also reminds me of how much I hate 5-10 year old me, but I try not to think about it.

As for characters repesenting 3rd party characters:
Capcom: Either Leon Kennedy or Dante
Namco Bandai: Nightmare
Sega: Flynn
Square Enix: 2B
Koei Techmo: Ryu Hayabusa
Konami: Bill Rizier
Bethesda: Doomguy
Blizzard: No

Oh YES.
Jet Set Radio was such a fun game, and it's so underrated. Him getting in would be the perfect way to put that series back in the spotlight.

Konami: A Silent Hill or Contra character? Don't know Konami well.
SEGA: Joker. You'll never see it comiiin! This is me being vaguely realistic.
Capcom: Dante.
Bandai Namco: Heihachi.
Square Enix: Noctis? Not a big fan, but his abilities are cool.
Disney: Sora.
Microsoft: Steve, because I need to know how he fights.
Blizzard: Tracer would be awesome.

It would be great if SEGA and Capcom both make their own mascot fighters (RIP MVC), they both have so many gems.

Exactly. I've been pushing for a Capcom Vs. Capcom game for YEARS. Honestly, I couldn't care less about whatever Capcom crosses over with as much as I care about which of my favorite Capcom characters get in.

It's Smash Ultimate, it's going to be up there. I will bet my entire Switch.

I was considering him, but then I remembered Espio...

Strange how there's only 2 reptile characters in Sonic so far...
Not suprising, mammals just lend themselves to the art style better. There are cool looking birds, reptiles, etc. though.

So the Direct basically has to be within the next 3 weeks. Past that is under a month from release, which if nothing else makes everything way too easy to leak. I just really can't see a Nov 14th (or later) Direct as a real possibility.

I'm putting my odds as 30:50:20. (That the direct happens in exactly the next 1/2/3 weeks) Thoughts?

We are at the point where these 16 remaining veterans plus Ken and Incineroar covers 6 full weeks worth of characters going by the typical 3 per week.

BUT, that would leave one week empty, and I legitimately doubt that's going to happen, within a minimum of two fighters per week.

So this is my theory.
-There is going to be two weeks of only two fighters.
-Week 26 will likely have Luigi and Yoshi to keep with the running gag between the two being "last".
-Anywhere from Week 20 to Week 25 will have another week with only two. Who they will be is anyone's guess.
-They will be between the remaining veterans (minus the "late two"), Ken (#60e) and Incineroar (#69) whenever they get revealed, and lastly, Geno (#70).

That's right, I'm calling Geno being the last reveal. Everyone focuses on Incineroar and Ken when it comes to Vergeben, but it's a bit overlooked that he also said there would be a second Square-Enix character. So it would stand to reason that all three of these characters he stated would be in the Blog lineup.
And with this recent "leaked" info from Tansmut or whatever his name is in regards to a real leak being out there that's getting Square-Enix's panties in a bunch, it's most likely referring to that infamous Geno pic that to my knowledge, hasn't actually been debunked yet.
But here's the thing. I don't think Geno is in the base game. I strongly believe Geno is going to be premium DLC like Mewtwo was before with Smash 4. Perhaps he will be free to download to those that have Switch Online accounts set up once he's released. Maybe even released earlier for them as a sort of incentive.

As much as people like to ***** about the Box Theory, everything's lining up for it more and more. And Geno being DLC would be a very good reason why he wouldn't be on the box.

Feel free to disagree with this all you want. Just my two cents.

So I'm guessing y'all saw that the Nintendo Live event indicated that Let's Go is gonna be a trial build, but not Smash Ultimate, right? Especially now that Sakurai brought attention to it on his twitter twice now.

I'm thinking a direct before that (starts november 3rd) is looking mighty likely, now.

Geno's not going to be on the blog if he's DLC, as it won't be coming out for months at the very least. Box theorists want it both ways with Verge rumoring the SE rep. It's just so much easier to say the box is silly, and at the very least we'll be getting Incineroar, Ken, and Geno in the base.

(and while I probably shouldn't have to say it, nothing I'm saying is taken to be objective fact, they are all my subjective opinions)

Ok looking it up now...

Missing from VI are any and all characters introduced in V (good riddance)
I'd argue that Xiba and somewhat Natsu were the only "bad" SCV characters. Otherwise, Pyrrha, Leixia, Zwei and Viola were fine, Elysium being the counterpart to Inferno is fine and I love the fact that Patroklos is a mockery and parody of the whole "JUSTICE!" character archetype. He's a breath of fresh air compared to another stoic and straightforward character, not to mention the fact that he's one of our few Sword & Shield users that does not use their crotch or ass for attacks.
Xiba and Natsu were just very unoriginal. Xiba for the whole Sun Wukong expy and Natsu for being based off of Naruto, although Natsu was entertaining in Project X Soul 2. But Xiba was both boring and un-entertaining.
And really, it's not the characters fault that the developers ended up putting another version of two of them as well as 3 mimics. And it's certainly did not help the developers that Namco wanted SCV out before Street Fighter X Tekken.

There are 34/35 (depends if you count Dec 7th) blog days left before release.

There are 16 returning characters, 6 new items, 5 new assist trophies, and 3 new Pokemon (including Vulpix). If we assume Vulpix is not being covered, that's 29 entries before new characters and returning stages are considered.

With 2 new characters, that is 31 entries.

The last 7 Wednesdays in a row were returning stages. If the next 7 Wednesdays are also returning stages, that is 38 entries which is already too many.

However, unlike assist trophies and Pokemon, new items have been covered at a rate not on-track to cover them all. We are over 70% through the blog's duration, and yet only 5 of 11 new items have been highlighted. There is barely a week per item left! Only 3 were actually given their own day's blog post, and only 1 (Death Scythe) has been shown since the 8.8.18 Direct.

So, we have 38 entries for 34-35 days, and these possiblities:
  • 3-4 new items will be skipped
  • We will stop seeing returning stages on Wednesdays at some point
  • We will get days that double up (like the initial week)
  • The blog will bleed over into the next week
This is all assuming that no weekday is skipped; note that we have had 3 days skipped previously.

My predictions for the final direct:
The direct will be next week
- Begins with Incineroar and Ken trailer. The two fire wielding fighters fight each other. Also new stage Ultra Space with Ultra Beasts as stage hazards.
- 2 echo fighter reveals like Chrom and Dark Samus - Dixie and Shadow
- Spirits mode detailed.
- Other single player modes (maybe break the targets?)
- Stage builder detailed.
- Minecraft assist and stage shown.
- Final reveal is Geno with a recreation of the Smash 64 opening. New Mario RPG stage.
- Direct ends with a brand new Godlike Melee like opening with all the characters in it at the end the announcer yells SUPER SMASH BROTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol Tracer? That's a spicy take. Stay crazy, Smashboards. The best alternative is that TF2 Scout skin for Snake they had back in the day.

Replace Geno with a Dragon Quest character, and you have almost the same excact predictions as I do.

I don't see anything lining up with box theory, especially because it's fundamentally flawed without knowing what's on the back, as the last couple characters could have more of a spotlight there. I've seen alot of people say "the longer we go without any news, the more likely box theory is correct" and personally I don't agree with that as we still have one direct left. Personally I don't think it's logical that there would only be 1 unique character (Incineroar) left in the entire final direct.

Now, what box theory does indicate to me is that we have AT LEAST two characters left, which isn't too helpful because I believe Vergaben anyways.

Pretty much how I feel. That timeframe simply fits with what Nintendo has done in the past, and it'll beat the inevitable leaks that would come. I honestly feel we'll get something before the 10th.

This is almost my exact prediction right here. My only other prediction is another character no one here expected, a wild card if you will.

I'd be more inclined to believe any character after #69 just simply wouldn't be on the box rather than have any kinda spotlight on the back of the box for whatever reason over any other characters.

But the opposite holds true, too, doesn't it? Why skip them?
