Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Of note, the menu theme was released and it's a banger. There's a top secret Nintendo event at a bar in Canada tonight and it has Smash. A new Mega Man track was posted. There are only fifty days til release. And everyone's excited!
Oh wow, tonight will be exciting. And 50 days??? Time has flown.

I hate VS ROB just feels like he constantly cheap shots me with his laser and the rocket aerial.

He uses his bow more in Uprising (all Pits prefer using a bow)

That’s nice to know
I saw as a possibility that he had some importance in regards to Snake's role in the SSE mode, but designing the stage is also cool.

Just some observations on my part:
-Jiggs will be much better, bottom mid at worst, thanks to mechanics alone (nerfed air dodges and a higher % floor for rage to start working)
-Ryu is going to be BUSTED thanks to auto-turnaround, kill confirms out of dash and special cancels out of aerials
-Not enough info on Young Link

Do you have a favourite joke or ****posted leak?

Mine would be the Crash leak video.

Just a follow up to my question posed earlier: how do your mains appear to be shaping up with respect to their tools, movement, mechanic changes, etc? This applies to everyone ofc, and hopefully isn't too off-topic

:ultpalutena:
I'm afraid I'm very skeptical about her standpoint. Some say her Counter/Reflect hybrid of a Down-B is a buff, but I disagree. It just means we have to rely on a counter more often while we got the laggy Explosive Flame instead, while Side-B back then was good against Villagers and it was good for gimping some recoveries. Sure some of her moves are faster, but so are other characters, and she still has her underwhelming tilt moves. She may be a secondary at this point rather than a main unless I see redeeming qualities to make up for that hybrid. Sorry you may not be my number 1 anymore.
Rating is a C for neutral, but still seems underwhelming until we get more information.

:ultbowser:
Let's just say that the Up-throw combo annoyance in s4 made me let him go as it was too mainstream and boring for my taste. With much of that gone while getting improvements on some of his moves (this includes Up-B and D-smash, and the visual effect of Side-B), I feel more confident in wanting to use him. Honorable mention to his "Tough Guy" ability being buffed as well. So yea, he looks more fun.
Rating is a B, not only for being above average, but for well, Bowser. However, if one of my most wanted characters get in, he may be lowered to a secondary/alt.

:ultpit:
After what I've seen, let's just say he looks buffed in almost every direction. The biggest buff IMO is his improved KO power, from U-air to Dash Attack to his aerials having less lag and such, while it seems like his hitboxes aren't as weird and hard to connect like in s4. Many of his moves come out faster I believe and he's more well-rounded. In fact, I am likely proud to say he shall most likely be my main again rather than a secondary in s4.
I give him an A+ Ultra, for going beyond my expectations. Bonus points for that one picture showing off new expressions and his new infinite jab animation looking so awesome. So fear not, young master Pit, because I am here to say that you've brought me new hope, and you may be my main once more! There were references made earlier btw.

For Veterans:

:ultkingdedede: It looks like they fixed some of his more glaring issues regarding hitboxes. His frame data looks a bit faster too. His new ability to spit out Gordos, at the very least, gives him another option to use them. The Gordos' hitboxes also look a lot bigger, now covering the whole frame of the Gordo unlike Smash 4. His new back aerial having much less landing lag means he can now safely fish for reactions without risking getting punished, which actually gives him a neutral. Staling dodges is also gonna make his already good edgeguarding game that much better.

:ultbowserjr: It doesn't look like his kit has been changed that much, which I don't mind since he's fun to use. Hopefully he has less lag in his attacks.

:ultdoc: His new meteor smash down aerial helps a lot, and gives him another really good KO option. I also appreciate how he's been walking the line between clone and semi-clone (still super happy he isn't an echo, **** all yall who thought he should just be an alt).

:ultpacman: From what I've seen his frame data is a lot quicker now, which is really gonna help him. In particular, Bonus Fruit and grab look a lot faster. PAC-JUMP's trampoline also looks like it's seen some interesting changes that'll be fun to toy around with.

:ultduckhunt: Nothing particularly noteworthy other than Duck Jump leaves them in a semi-helpless state rather than a helpless state, which makes recovery a lot safer.

:ultdk: I really appreciate the new animations he has, making him a lot more expressive than previous entries. One of my gripes with DK in previous games was that instead of feeling like I was using DK I was just using "gorilla", and it looks like that's being addressed here. As for actual gameplay, aerial Hand Slap being able to meteor smash easier and Headbutt having super armor are welcome changes.

:ultpichu: The various buffs she's been given tells me that they're actually gonna make her viable rather than a joke character, which is nice since I unironically mained her in Melee.

For newcomers:

:ultridley: His moveset seems to focus on full-on offense, which complements my typical playstyle. He honestly just looks like he can spam attacks without much consequences.

:ultkrool: An interesting moveset all things considered. He's probably one of the heaviest characters, yet has access to a lot of projectiles and a counter, making him pretty unique among heavyweights. Will be fun using him.

We don't know.

But even then, didn't we have a user who was going to check the place?

There was one with a direct that got sillier and sillier until finally the last two announcements were "Reggie gets diagnosed with *****" and "Geno is announced as a Mega Man echo".

I also love the one that ends with an Incineroar reveal where he throws a Pokeball and Decidueye is revealed as a Pokeball 'Mon.

And then my absolute favorite one is WiiUGamer12 shrieking about Kirito being leaked only to call him Karuto. Astounding.

You'd be wrong. They announced Goku, so we're just trying to live in a delusion until the game comes out.

-Villager is virtually the same but, coincidentally, most of his worst matchups were in the demo and all but Mewtwo seem to have gotten considerable nerfs.

-Not enough shown with Wii Fit or Bowser Jr to determine much but directional air dodging is a huge deal for both because they both had garbage landing options in Smash 4. Also, with landing lag reduced across the board, both have the potential to be combo monsters if their frame data lines up.

Up tilt is faster too, which is neat, but not completely necessary. Sense landing lag appears to be globally lower, that's going to be a huge boon for him. He'll still likely have more landing lag relative to the rest of the cast, but it'll benefit him immensely.

Shield is nerfed a bit though, sense rolling stales now.
With the new airdodge mechanics, it's going to be really hard to land against Shulk then. With that much range in his up tilt, you have to dodge really early to not get hit and Shulk can react and punish it before they land.

As for Shield, heh, I always used it as "oh **** I'm above 100%". It'll still have its use of annoying opponents since they won't be able to kill you lol

I don't see how auto-turnaround will make Ryu better. In fact, I could see it really hurting him depending on how it affects his control and usage of Back Air

But your profile pic is the P3 Protag that's voiced by Yuri and not Laura

One of the reasons I love P3 Protag is that he doesn't talk. ;)

Joking aside, I loved Yuri Lowenthal as Yosuke and Ryoji but as main characters, he kinda sounds same. I prefer Akida Ishida's performance more.

How come?

Because of the removed tipper mechanic?
Yes absolutely without a tip she will always be below Marth competitively.

Side note just heard the menu theme, really dislike it but I'm assuming we can change it so no biggie. Brawl style is more my thing

:ultmarth: id say just cus of his core tipper mechanic which lends players to focus on spacing he'll always b amongst the top tier. don't think jab followups will be that much of a problem with the reduced landing lag from sm4sh. mite see alot more f-smashes from what sum1 mentioned about the tipper hitbox being easier to hit. lowkey concerned of how much new improved Link cud possibly counter him but im sure wud be fine. and if he can foxtrot and act out of it doesnt it essentially mean that he can turnaround pivot tipper like with Ease? i j wna play as my baby boy man

So with release rapidly approaching, was curious to see opinions on this. Would you rather....

Have a direct today that shared every bit of information that's left?

Or

No more information and everything else is a nice surprise at release?

While a surprise would be nice, no way I could say no to all the information. I hate not knowing things!

I want to add something smart but cuteness of your icon distracts me.

The thing with any character with a disjoint is that they want to outspace the opponent so they can't be hit. That's how you naturally reward good play with a disjointed character. Marth, however, has an innate reward for full spacing so properly playing him basically rewards you in double.
Lucina can't capitalize that and, optimally, you should never hit with anything but the very end of the blade.
Which is why I think the Belmonts will be absolute monsters as there's a very likely chance they have a pseudo-tipper mechanic with all their sweetspots being placed at the end of the whip.
And it's also why Shulk should have his sweetspots at the tip seriously why the **** does the metal part deal more damage than a ****ing laser it makes no goddamn sense please just let Shulk space properly Sakurai I beg you

:ultdoc: His new down-air looks really spicy. It's obviously gonna be slower than his old dair, but the fact that it can meteor smash like Falcon and Ganondorf's dair is the real spice. Gonna have fun learning how to pull it off consistently.

:ultgnw: Nothing new, gameplay wise (besides his final smash, which I do actually like - his old FS took a million years and wasn't really interesting after using it so many times) Personally, I don't jive with the fact he transforms into different Game & Watch sprites when he uses his attacks now. I get that he's supposed to be an amalgamation of every G&W game, but I also liked the fact that the identity of "Mr. Game and Watch" became something of its own character since Melee; a goofy, black silhouette man who runs around using random objects as his attacks.

:ultpacman: Certainly got the most buffs out of my frequent characters, and for good reason. Pac-Man was a slow, technical piece of **** back in Smash 4, but I was still determined to learn how to play him since he was such a hype inclusion. It seems with Ultimate, he's a lot faster in multiple areas and his grab isn't complete doo-doo garbage anymore. I'll probably end up playing him more than Doc and Game and Watch if he's truly a lot better this time around.

I'll probably look into playing these guys as well: :ultmegaman::ultrob::ultmewtwo::ultbowser::ultridley::ultrichter::ultdarksamus::ultyounglink::ultlittlemac::ultgreninja::ultganondorf:

It's like everything you say has no purpose but to start **** out of nowhere.
Man **** that **** what about Darkest Lariat eating shields like Shadow Ball does? That'd be sick! Oh and canceling the rotation would be good if the situation is unsafe.
