Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Minako and Joker in the same picture, on equal footing heals my soul every time. Had to make it my phone background.
I'm thinking of doing the same once Ultimate releases, as PQ2 is probably the last 3DS game I'll be purchasing, and I loved PQ. Seeing Minako again in general is fantastic, as I honestly thought she was not coming back again.

My phone background right now is this picture:

Inkling Newcomer Artwork.jpg

I honestly miss the fact that each newcomer doesn't have their own unique artwork though, that's one thing Smash 4 did amazingly with in comparison to Ultimate.

Not to sound dramatic, but if four protagonists have a unison attack, I'll probably die.
All four protagonists + Aigis will probably be my main team for PQ2, especially since Aigis is also part of the Fool Arcana with P3FES and beyond. It helps that Aigis is one of my favorite characters from the series as well. ;)

Just a follow up to my question posed earlier: how do your mains appear to be shaping up with respect to their tools, movement, mechanic changes, etc? This applies to everyone ofc, and hopefully isn't too off-topic

It'll go by fast, especially if you're American because you'll likely get multiple days off for Thanksgiving. In the history of Smash speculation, I've found it one of the easiest to get through because of this and the fact that a buttload of new games typically drop during this time to act as a distraction.

She's one of my faves as well. Though you can still make a team of 5 Wild Cards even without her.

New unison attacks seems to encourage trying out different combinations and that's great. I don't usually put tanks in my party much, but this time I can even make a team out of them.

From the little bit of gameplay I've seen of him, :ultmegaman: seems to be buffed in general, especially with his Leaf Shield now being a usable move in comparison to Smash 4. It's part of the reason I want to see more gameplay with him as I can't really tell just how improved he is as of this moment.

:ultmewtwo: seems to be as good as his Smash 4 incarnation, if not better in some respects. His USmash seems to have been buffed (in particular the AOE is larger), though I have seen that Confusion was nerfed a little as well in terms of recovery, but I'll manage with him. Still seems to be quite powerful though.

My other main, :ultpeach:, is currently MIA, but from the little snippets we've gotten from the E3 direct and blog, she seems mostly the same outside of Toad being a much larger part of her moveset than just being a meat shield, which I appreciate. Any gameplay with her will be appreciated by me indeed, even if we have to get it less than a month before release.

EDIT: I should mention that I'm not a competitive player (i.e., never played in tournaments or in For Glory matches), but I have played a ton of Solo Smash throughout the years, so I am mostly interested in seeing how everyone has changed since their last appearance. Considering the changes "could be in the tens of thousands," this greatly excites me.

Wow all the unnecessary validation I am receiving, thank you. Honestly I've just watched each direct multiple times so I have a good idea of what was said and when. Seriously can't wait to dive into the next smash direct >:3

Also there's literally nothing bad about being wrong about something, I hope I didn't come across as a ****.

I'm a casual player, not competitive, and I don't have a "main" per se. But one of my favorite returning characters, Pokemon Trainer, I am so glad is a) back intact b) no more penalty for sticking to one c) changes rapidly. I think it will make Pokemon Trainer much more fun to play and I'll have a variety of movement options depending on the situation. How so? Well, I'm a casual player, so I'll find out when I play the game.

...and if another particular character would be announced, then I will most certainly have a main.

:ultrob:

+ New airdodge mechanics on the surface appear to be a major buff. He hates juggling and this gives an extra tool to escape them. His recovery is so long he is free to use them in positions that would be an SD for most other characters. He has also never relied on it for recovery anyway, using aerials to cover it instead. Beyond that, he has two fast projectiles (with gyro sending at a near horizontal angle) to very safely edgeguard others who can't edgeguard as freely and have more linear recoveries.
+ ROB has some very fast tilts (frame 3) which benefit from the dash cancel mechanics a lot.
+ Powershielding his projectiles is now harder. The parry mechanic potentially grants him the ability to punish out of shield much better than he could previously.
+ His neutral aerial is even bigger now.
+ His down throw buries opponents, giving him more guaranteed strong followups where most characters have lost them.

Look forward to seeing ROB more in this game, particularly at lower levels, when Down Throw to Up Smash catches on. I don't expect him to suddenly be top tier but I anticipate him being much better.

Very true, and in my case, I'll have both Veteran's Day and Thanskgiving off. The holidays in general will keep me busy at work all the way through the end of the year, so the time will be flying by for me.

I'll be using these days to finish up some other games I still have in the backlog if I haven't finished Castlevania Requiem by then, since that game in general will be eating up a fair amount of my free time once it releases on the 26th. I can't wait to play through both RoB and SotN for the first time.

Casual player here. :ultzelda: buffed significantly but I'm more interested in how her animations and effects look more fun to use. Playing as a Zelda I'm unfamiliar will be interesting since I used to Queen Zelda so there's that. (yeah, I loved Twilight Princess, sue me) I may end up playing her differently.

:ultjigglypuff: seems same, which I don't have much problem.

Not exactly my mains but :ultpalutena: and :ultrobin feels more fun to use. (though I'll miss some of Palutena's specials. Eh, more reason to return to 3DS once in a while)

I wanted Varia Samus to get buffed...

At least Dark Samus looks interesting.

A sad, sad place... may I have hugs? <3
I think they may have improved Link, a little bit?

I dunno, I'm the most casual Smash player out there. :p

I don't see any problems with loving Twilight Princess. :/

But, yeah, I might play more of Zelda in Ultimate, just because she looks fun, and cute. :3

By the way, Ultimate may not have best looking models (some characters look rough and I think they may overall have fewer polygons compared to Wii U), but it has the best effects in the entire franchise without a doubt and if anyone disagrees with me... well, I'll disagree with them, too.

Samus deserved a buff, that's for sure.

It is cool to see Zelda and Wario done better, doh.

I play :ultzelda: on occasion throughout the series, and she has been fun for me. Her phantom move looks like it will offer some interesting strategies I feel.

I also played :ultrobin a fair amount in Smash 4, I loved how unique his gameplay style is compared to everyone else. Seeing the uses remaining on their tomes and Levin Swords is a godsend though, it was one of the reasons why I never stayed with them as a main or secondary. Hoping for some gameplay from them as well so we can get an idea if anything else has changed with them (including how different their FS will be).

Being able to charge the charge shot in the air is a pretty **** good buff if you ask me
True.

But i fear that it won't be enough, for some reason.

Still hoping for good things to happen, and Dark Samus could be a sign of something.

TP is probably the black sheep of the franchise (or at least among the 3D games) and they tend to be my faves.

Also, Zelda looks really fun, I loved how they focused on her mage side. Her new victory animations are perfect.

Zelda deserved a buff, because in Smash 4 the separation from Sheik hurted her.

Shulk is better already simply thanks to the new Monado Arts mechanic but I can't say much about him otherwise. His NAir seems to not be a huge commitment anymore so it can hopefully replace UAir to hit opponents above as UAir is better used for killing.
Ganondorf is just looking amazing in every aspect, loss of THE BOOT is gonna hurt a bit since that move was ridiculously broken but getting all that range in his Smash attacks is gonna be a nice tradeoff, specially considering things like DSmash are just straight up upgrades from his old one. Wizard's Foot also seems to travel further now which is good. It seems you can also act out of Flame Choke faster so hopefully Flame Choke->DTilt/STilt(against chubbier characters) is true now without a tech(it can be escaped in 4 already but only if any get up option is buffered). And of course, all those frame data buffs are just hmmmmm

Bowser Jr. seems to have none of his problems fixed, unless something happens I can see him being bottom 5 again.

There has been nearly 100 new pages in the space of like a day what happened, oh my.
Of note, the menu theme was released and it's a banger. There's a top secret Nintendo event at a bar in Canada tonight and it has Smash. A new Mega Man track was posted. There are only fifty days til release. And everyone's excited!

Up tilt is faster too, which is neat, but not completely necessary. Sense landing lag appears to be globally lower, that's going to be a huge boon for him. He'll still likely have more landing lag relative to the rest of the cast, but it'll benefit him immensely.

Shield is nerfed a bit though, sense rolling stales now.
