Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Games I've been most hype for... Hmm.

Brawl - was probably the biggest/earliest hype factory for me. I remember staying up until 2am to see the Dojo update. When Sonic was announced, and freaked. I was so excited.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe - I love the Mortal Kombat franchise, and I love DC Comics, so this was like a weird dream seeing this crossover happen. Knowing the rosters would be limited to 10 for both series really cut down on speculation, but seeing Captain Marvel (now: Shazam) revealed was an awesome surprise. Long story short, the game was bad and I didn't care.

Mortal Kombat (2011) - A HD reboot of the MK universe chronicling the first three games lore with all the original MK 1 - UMK3 characters? I was hyped to the moon. I was disappointed Motaro was retconned, and that Rain wasn't in the base game... And really miffed about Freddy Krueger of all people being DLC, but still, it was a fun ride.

Injustice - A DC fighting game made by my favorite fighting game company? Yes, please. Roster speculation was super fun, and Injustice 2 was no where near as exciting as the hype train for this game. It had all of my favorite characters included. Injustice 2 cutting a lot of them really killed my hype for it.

GTA V - I've been playing GTA's since 2, back on the original PlayStation. I never really followed any of the prior games speculation periods, but this one, I dove in head first. I remember when the first footage leaked from someone with an early copy, and I marveled at the new car physics.

Smash 4 - This was like a throwback to Brawl days for me, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Though, I was a part of the camp that was disappointed in the lack of Mewtwo, but the 50 Fact Extravaganza made up for it.

And now, I'm currently most hype for SSBU lol.

:ultwiifittrainer:- The Ultimate troll reveal. Pretty much fell in love instantly because of the mountains of salt her reveal produced. Wound up being my main secondary for SSB4, winning me a lot of local tournaments in the process.
I see, so you are a man of culture as well. (Ike and Isabelle are also nice, but it's rare to see people like playing as her)

It's Kingdom Hearts 3. Sorry Smash Bros, but you're not Kingdom Hearts 3.

I've waited for this game for nearly a decade. I played Kingdom Hearts 2 in the fourth grade and avidly followed the series ever since. I bought a PSP mainly for Birth by Sleep, and bought a PS3 because I thought KH3 would come out on it (my sister gets good use out of it though so it's alright). I've replayed the games multiple times, and overall I love the series. So far the game looks absolutely stunning; it will be one of the best games on both the PS4 and Xbox One. This is especially noteworthy because of the development hell that this game has been through (it was announced in 2013). Every trailer reveals a new twist that I'm interested in learning more about, and with every bit of gameplay I see I'm only more excited to actually get my hands on it.

Plus it comes out a week after my birthday, so that's nice.
I'm really hyped for that game but I'm trying to be cautious because I have no idea how the story will turn out.

So whether putting a DQ character in is justified or not is really up to Sakurai, at this stage, since he does place some sort of importance on globally-recognized franchises.

So here's an off-topic question loosely related to hype:

What're the games you were the most hyped for ever?

I wonder how many people here will answer with a Smash game.
Hmm, let's see...

Super Smash Bros Brawl
The dojo definitely helped, since it was so unpredictable.

Wario Land: Shake It!
Wario Land's big return...for like a year, but it was good while it lasted.

Mega Man 10
To think I never expected that to be revealed in Nintendo Power.

Super Smash Bros 4
Not as hype as Brawl, but still decent in that regard.

Sonic Mania
Great tribute, although it needed an update to really shine.

Windjammers
Glorious return of a Data East license.

A Hat In Time
After Yooka-Laylee's failings, this 3D platformer proved that being baked in the oven for years can actually work wonders, sometimes.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon
Excellent nod to CVIII, and compensates for the oddly tardy development that the main game it's tied to is suffering through right now.

Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise
FOTNS and Yakuza are two great tastes that taste great together.

As far as currently hyped for:

Assorted Mega Man fangames (specifically MMX Corrupted, Quint's Revenge 2, Revolution Remix, Shattered Diamond and the upcoming final Rock Force update)
The last few years or so have been shaky, but I think things are finally looking up for the MM fan scene, especially with MM11 being divisive to some.

Battle Princess Madelyn
A heartfelt tribute to Ghosts 'N Goblins that's currently finally set to release a few weeks after Ultimate.

Kingdom Hearts III
Regardless of how the story goes and whether Gaston will show up at all, it's about high time this part of the KH saga came to a close, and should be fun.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
This one goes without saying.

You still lose a move and have to auto-switch on the loss of a stock.

It's not the same thing as actual Solo Charizard. The strategies will be different with the loss of Rock Smash.
The strategies will be better as you'll have three different fighters to choose for any given situation. That's why I love that Pokemon Trainer's back. I give up one move, for several. It's subjective, but Pokemon Trainer is better than Charizard in a variety of ways, and I was really disappointed when it was just Charizard in 4 (I loved rock smash, but it's a sacrifice I'm down for).

That's just going to start flaming. How about favourite Smash characters? :)
Cuz I love making lists.

:ultrobin Awakening is great, Robin is a cool character, and I like mages
:ultzelda: Zelda is my favorite series, and unpopular, but I really like her more defensive play style
:ultkrool:DK is a favorite series of mine since childhood, and growing up playing DKC games and DK64, K Rool holds a special place in my heart
:ultike: Ike is best lord, and Path of Radiance is my favorite FE game, and dude's a beast
:ultchrom: Chrom is a close second to Ike, and I like Roy's play style but couldn't care less about Roy
:ultlucina: Continuing my Awakening love, I also really love her quicker swordsmanship
:ultpichu: Because it's Pichu
:ultdaisy: Really like playing as Peach, but gotta switch to Daisy for the "Hi, I'm Daisy" taunts
:ultridley: I like villains, and as far as they go, Ridley is one of the best, IMO, he looks fun to play
:ultganondorf: For the OoT look, what a badass, he looks not terrible now too

So it seems likely that there might be smash info on Oct 18th whether it's a direct or a simple 1 character livestream reveal(betting on the latter).

Brawl is my least favorite.. Mostly because it was like the Switch version of WWE2k18 where it was like all slow and Toon Link and Lucario ruined it in terms of new characters.. oh and of course, the disappointment of Isaac being a assist trophy whom totally should have been playable.

I also remember seeing Palutena in that game wanting to play as her too.

The game I've been most hyped by, bar none, surpassing even SMASH BROS. was SMT x FE.

I would probably be fine with that, as the roster would get leaked anyways, meaning we'd still know before release...
Also, the unlockable characters are sometimes more fun than the default ones (i'm looking at you :falcon64:,:mewtwomelee:, and :sonic:)
So it seems likely that there might be smash info on Oct 18th whether it's a direct or a simple 1 character livestream reveal(betting on the latter).
Huh, what makes you so confident in saying that?

I'd be happy, because that'd mean there's surprises to look forward to on launch day as well as confirmation that there's a few fighters left.

Suprised. I have a hard time believing Sakurai would effectively lie us just to make unlocking more suprising.

I wonder how many people here will answer with a Smash game.
Trails in the Sky The Thirds localization.
Trails of Cold Steel III/IV - Which i'll be playing soon thanks to the transcript of III and finishing the Crossbell duology.
Sonic Generations
Sonic Mania
Dragon Ball Fighterz - Despite not being much of a fan of team fighting games, and still not.
Pokemon XD - After Colosseum I wanted more and XD did deliver even if I dislike the protagonists design.
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn - Because I was one of the very few who knew who Ike was before Smash, and I eagerly awaited the sequel to Path of Radiance my 3rd favorite FE
Dissidia Duodecim
Warriors Orochi and now Orochi 4
Freedom Planet 2
Disgaea 4
Project X Zone

Most hyped I've been for a game is Brawl, and nothing even comes close. Smash speculation was my first online community experience, so it was really special to me that I got to discuss the Dojo news, aswell as my own hopes for the game, with other people. I didn't get my most wanted, but I got pretty much everything else I had wished for, and even the things I wouldn't otherwise have cared about I ended up getting hype for because I knew others wanted them.

This was also the period when I really began delving in retro games, I pretty much lived on GameTrailers because I loved hearing about other people's experiences with games I hadn't yet played, aswell as trying to figure out which game I should play next. This just helped feed the Brawl hype of course, because suddenly I actually knew who all the characters in Smash were, or at least what their game of origin was like.

The game coming out almost half a year later in Europe than it did in Japan was painful, but it was a special moment when I finally got my hands on it, I remember everything from that day. Although it's far from one of my favorite games these days I'm still extremely grateful for the memories it gave me, it helped shape the kind of gamer that I am today.

Ultimate is probably the game which comes closest to it in terms of hype, in large part thanks to Ridley of course.

It would make things alot more interesting thats for sure, especially after seeing ones whom are on the wishlist.. Say we see a new Pokemon, Geno, Dixie, Shadow and Medusa revealed this month, then like you said there are more secret characters afterwords.. It would be very interesting because who could they possibly be?

Then I play like 200 matches and unlock Isaac, he was never announced.. Just kept secret, imagine how excited I would to see this surprise.

So... I got a random question for you all...
Who were the greatest guest character additions to fighting games (doesn't have to be just Smash Bros)?

For me personally, the main two that I think of that kinda defines guest characters imo, are Link in Soul Caliber II, and Sonic in Brawl.
I don't think there will ever be guest characters more fitting than these two.

Man what a time that was. I still have a verrrrrrry loose interest in that game (even though I know absolutely nothing about SMT), but it just looks like a big WTF still. And also Lucina didn't make it in despite appearing in the teaser smh

The game I was the most hyped for was Pokemon Sun and Moon. Jesus Christ is was ridiculous.
Every day was a rush, every time we got a new trailer my heart started pumping, every time I saw a new Pokemon my blood started rushing.
It was by far the most hype i've ever been for a game.

Would it be off topic to ask what everyone's top 5 DS games are?

Super Marth Bros Ultimate: Central Fiction Arena Ulitmax Under Night Inbirth EX Arcade Edition Volume 5 Featuring Ike from the Wiafu Emblem series & Roy!
Did I do it right?
Off the top of my head,

1. Jump Ultimate Stars
2. Metroid Prime Hunters
3. New Super Mario Bros.
4. Pokemon Black/White
5. Mega Man Star Force 3/Pokemon Platinum.

There's plenty of more DS games I want to try out eventually, I heard the DS version of Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions plays like a 2D Metroid game, for example.

DQ8 sold around 1.5 million copies in the west on it's first run, DQ9 sold around the same as well.
I don't think it's as irrelevant in the west as people suggest it is.
