Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

The term noob in this particular case is probably not the best description.

I do forsee at least a Ridley bandwagon though, and K.Rool as well cause Zero said he was good.

No, I'm talking about how a lot of people online use Little Mac, Cloud, Link, and Bayonetta because they're kinda cheap in a sense... So they kinda use them, as they are a little too easy to learn
I'm sticking with Captain Falcon, Mario, Zero Suit Samus and Ganon.. Looking to add Daisy, Ridley, King K Rool and Medusa to my main squad as well.

"Zero said he was good" Yep, another reason not to play him.

(This was a joke, but seriously, I have a hard time taking the guy seriously, even though he wins a lot of tournaments)

EDIT: Also, the hypest thing I can expect from Ultimate competitive play is someone kicking Zero's butt using Zero Suit Samus.

I can't tell you how much it bothers me seeing people in all the footage online not refill their ink tanks. I have a hard time not yelling "Refill your ink! Why aren't you refilling!?" at my monitor, lol. Probably comes from being a Splatoon player that's met their untimely end thanks to low ink more times than I care to admit. :p
That's exactly why I think Inklings will be the new "online noob character" at launch.

Seeing these "pros" trying out Inkling in the Ultimate demo and seeing them utterly fail to use ink to their advantage at all makes me firmly believe randoms online will do the same thing. But so many people playing Smash online will have surely played Splatoon 2 as well, so I think there'll be a lot of fandom crossover. Plus, she's a brand new character, so that adds to the appeal as well.

If we go by that that logic, Pit and Dark Pit are just Link semi clones
Wait until I tell you about how they made Charizard an Olimar semi-clone in Smash 4. Because they moved Rock Smash to down special, they both had a down special that granted invincibility frames.

Now with Pokémon Switch being back, now Squirtle, Ivysaur, AND Charizard are Olimar semi-clones, since that move also does no damage and has invincibility frames. Oh the humanity. :p

Entire Smash Ultimate playable character roster consists of Mario clones. :bluejump:

Come to think of it, Little Mac is absolutely an echo of Young Link, with the only difference being their entire moveset. Huh.

I think K. Rool has potential to be pretty good, but honestly, it's hard to say until we have the game in our hands and can lab it for a few months, lol.

The limited footage we have of him definitely makes me excited, though. A heavy with a counter, two projectiles (The blunderbuss especially. That thing looks like it could be super nasty if used right), and decent looking aerials and mobility definitely help him stand out compared to the other heavyweights, that's for sure. His recovery could suck, though, so I'm a little worried about that.

Honestly, Bowser is the laziest Yoshi clone. They've kept the down B same after changing everything else. Lame.

What do you mean by the "OG 3?" Jimmy T is the first character besides Wario whose games you play in the original WarioWare, and then you have Mona, Spitz, and 9 Volt. The games have never really positioned her as the obvious second banana.
Honestly my perception is colored by the fact that I played Mega Party Games and Touched over the original initially and in Touched Jimmy and Mona unlock simultaneously.

She just always seemed the most important to me, I guess. Her games always seem to be referenced and returning. She was in the ending cutscene of Party Games as a major character, too, in a game that stripped every stage of its story.

Plus in Touched it's one of her games that represents the original GBA game during 9-Volt's stage. She's just always been the obvious rep in my mind.

So here's an off-topic question loosely related to hype:

What're the games you were the most hyped for ever?

I wonder how many people here will answer with a Smash game.

In terms of Elma, I don't think that gun statue was made specifically for her. Honestly, I think the whole gun statue was made for Snake during development, and it wasn't stated that gun statue was for learning what to do with Elma's design, either. Vinny put it best, when we're talking about guns, at least characters like Bayonetta and Fox have guns, but more in a fantastical kind of way, not to mention their series are entirely fiction. Snake and Metal Gear in general involve real world topics like the Cold War, and uses real life weaponry like a RPG-7, C4s and grenades, Nikita stingers, etc.

Now, times might change and the ESRB MIGHT be more lenient (I still see Bayonetta push limits in very small snippets of gameplay), but I'm pretty sure Sakurai might've had to remodel some of the weapons to try and keep the ESRB happy with all the stuff that's already in the game. Granted, they still look a kin a bit to their real life counterparts, but definitely not to the extent of Brawl's detail.

No series hypes me like Smash, it's why it's my favorite series.

The closest are pretty much any Pokemon generation. If it's a new game and new generation, I'm hype and following all the sources of information just like Smash.

Besides those nothing really else hypes me in the same way. BOTW forced me to buy a Switch when I was planning to wait a month so maybe that counts?

Hmm...well, within the past 5 years or so, I think Smash 4, Splatoon, BotW, and Mario Odyssey are the games that excited me the most.

As for what I'm currently excited for? Smash Ultimate, Kingdom Hearts 3, Tales of Vesperia, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Metroid Prime 4.

If were talking noobs, i think we will hear a lot of "Inkling is such a trash character, you cant even reload your ink!"
"Y Can't Ridley Crawl?"

Smash 4 and Smash Ultimate, easily...
When they said "one more announcement" at the end of the March Direct, I knew almost instantly what it was and freaked out...

Bayonetta 3 if Kamiya lets me

It might be Ultimate, tbh. Initially not that much, but "Everyone is Here" and I'm sold. Devil May Cry V and Persona Q2 also are close runners.

If you mean previously, probably Persona 5 and it was a bad decision.

Getting put back with :ultpokemontrainer: was the best thing that could have happened to zard, honestly.

I've personally always found almost all the Pokemon's movelists really boring (though that's or course just me). But even if you don't think so, having Charizard on his own when Bowser AND Ridley exist just kinda makes him look more samey and boring by comparison.

But putting him together with the other starters with no stupid penalty? That's already shaping up to be one of the most fun characters in the series. My time spent playing Pokemon Trainer in the demo was a blast. AND they look like they're probably gonna be very dang good.

Wanna play Zard solo? You can do that. Just gotta switch back to him after he's KO'd. Not like fighting as him alone would make him any worse than he was in Brawl or Smash 4 to begin with. :smirk:
Wouldn’t this make Ridley samey since Zard was playable in Smash a decade before Rids and was playable on its own years before Ridley as well?

Smash Ultimate is it, to be honest, but to pick others that aren't Smash...

LA Noire, which was a mistake. I love Noir and thought the face thing sounded incredible but god that game was... not great to play. Watching the Super Beard Bros LP gave me a new perspective on its positives but I just did not enjoy myself.

Ace Attorney Dual Destinies. I NEVER thought we would EVER get a fifth AA game. AJ wasn't well-regarded by the fandom at the time. The US didn't get AAI2 or Dai Gyakuten Saiban. All hope seemed lost. And then it came and it was glorious.

Persona 5. It's the greatest turn-based RPG of all time. Blew me away in every conceivable way. I love Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 and it soars
above both of them (even if FeMC in P3P is my favorite Persona protagonist).

Metal Gear Solid V. I bought a PS4 for this game. It's a beautiful incomplete piece of gaming history. I loved it, but it feels me with melancholy knowing what we could have had. I can't say I recommend it at all but it was definitely an experience to be part of the fandom and the hype cycle.

Mass Effect Andromeda...

:(
I am so sorry.

I approached ME:A with a cautious optimism. ME3, on the other hand...

...let's just say that ending tore me up inside for like a month.

I was watching that Direct with my brother at the time, and as soon as the trailer started, I knew within like 2 seconds that it was Smash and started screaming, lol. That Direct really threw everyone for a loop. Everyone was expecting pretty much nothing out of it, and it was basically E3 in late Winter.

The only series other than Smash that tend to get my full attention whenever a new entry is announced are Professor Layton and Ace Attorney.
Mario, Zelda and Pokemon too whenever new main entries are announced but I tend to be a lot more laid back whenever those come around.

The game I was most hyped for would probably be either Brawl or Wind Waker HD.

I'm thinking that toy gun from that mecha may be for Elma or a new design for Geno's arm-cannon/gun or whatever if he's in please.

Snake's weapons still seem to be realistic or near-realistic, and he doesn't use guns in his moveset.

What are you two even saying? The comment said Pokemon Trainer is better without stamina, as in play with whatever Pokemon you want without having to switch.
Except he still has a more restricted moveset. And it doesn't fix the aesthetic of him no longer being his own character.

All I wanted to do was retire and spend the rest of my days drinking with Garrus and raising blue children with Liara...

Is that too much to ask for? Like the failure of Mass Effect hurts the medium.

That's just going to start flaming. How about favourite Smash characters? :)
I have a few.

:ultmario: is my main for Smash 4, super fun and always brings a smile to my face.
:ultsonic: My childhood hero and because I always loved going fast.
:ultmegaman: In case it wasn't obvious I love robots and MM games always give that kind of challenge I enjoy. MM11 is fantastic so far.
:ultsamus: The amazing things she's accomplished and how much atmosphere Metroid gives off.
:ultdarksamus: One of my favourite villains because of how much Retro Studios managed to show and tell without her ever speaking.
:ultridley: Also one of my favourite villains, I do love dragons and had been supporting him for years.
:ultlucina: Best girl, someone who I often look to when down on myself. Also how I got into FE.
:ultwolf: Not played any SF games still but I always preferred how Wolf handled compared to Fox and Falco. Stoked to have him back finally.
:ultganondorf: Similarly not played Zelda games, I just find Dorf a blast to play in FFAs and his improvements have me pumped to break him out again.
:ultshulk: The new kid on my block who I hope will get much needed improvements this time around. Sorry I misjudged your series years ago Shulk.

Honourable mentions: :ultbowser::ultfalcon::ultdk::ultfalco::ultkrool::ultluigi::ultmarth::ultmetaknight::ultgnw::ultpalutena::ultrob::ultrobin:ultwario:

And my least favourites:

:ultroy: Voice drives me nuts, bad design completely ruins the point of him having a sword, cursed to be bad in every single game he's in, always comes off as a "tryhard" character to me. I do love his Sm4sh redesign though.
:ultchrom: Still think he should have stayed as a Final Smash, thought Sakurai's reasoning for keeping Chrom out was sound. Also he just came off as forgettable to me in Awakening and I bench him everywhere because he bores me. At least Matt Mercer gives a solid performance each time.
:ultcorrin:Only putting them here because I utterly despise Fates and their Counter is broken as ****, but points for fun unique moveset design.
:ultinkling: Don't like their design or series, the amount of times I've had it shoved in my face has only made me dislike them more.

I pretty much love everyone, lol. There's only three characters in the game I actually dislike, so I'll just make this a simple top ten for the sake of time and post length. :p

10. :ultkingdedede: (DEDEDE, THAT'S THE NAME YOU SHOULD KNOW! DEDEDE, HE'S THE KING OF THE SHOW!)

9. :ultgnw: (He's one of the funniest characters on the roster, IMO. I always have a blast playing as this guy.)

8. :ultolimar: (There was a short period back in Brawl where I played him a lot, and him being in the game is what got me curious in Pikmin.)

7. :ulttoonlink: (The best Link. He's just such a lovable little dork.)

6. :ultpichu: (I've always unironically loved Pichu and wanted him back. Needless to say, I am very excited to play him in Ultimate, and would love if he somehow ends up good, lol.)

5. :ultsamus: (Metroid is probably in my top 5 franchises of all time, and Samus is just super fun to play in Smash. If it weren't for all the other characters I like putting time into, Samus would probably be one of my most played secondaries.)

4. :ultisabelle: (She's a pure doggo. 'Nuff said.)

3. :ultluigi: (I've been playing Luigi in Smash for as long as I could hold a controller. Heck, Luigi's is one of my most video game characters period, so I honestly don't think I will ever stop playing as him in Smash Bros.)

2. :ultwario: (My all time favorite video game character. Like Luigi, as long as he's in Smash, I will never stop playing as him. I may be replacing him as my main with Inkling, but he's still gonna always be in my character rotation.)

1. :ultinkling: (They're cute, they're stylish, they're awesome, they're the Inklings. Gosh, what can I really say about them that I already haven't? Splatoon really has surprised me with how much I've grown attached to it over the past couple of years, and I pulled for these guys so hard during the ballot days. Seeing them make it in, and the very first revealed, no less? That was a pretty magical moment I don't think I'll ever forget, ha ha.)
Great list. This one is mine

10.:ulticeclimbers:

9.:ultganondorf:

8.:ultinkling:

7.:ultzss:

6.:ultmario:

5.:ultmarth:

4.:ultluigi:

3.:ultjigglypuff:

2.:ultfalcon:

1.:ultness:

You still lose a move and have to auto-switch on the loss of a stock.

It's not the same thing as actual Solo Charizard. The strategies will be different with the loss of Rock Smash.
