Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Starlink is out.

Someone should use this screenshot from the trailer as a fake leak on /v/ and see how quickly it gets reposted to this thread

EDIT: lol here's the tweet in case the image breaks again:

Got Starlink today, and I'm hyped! Currently downloading the day-one patch.

This is doing to be a long 30-minute download.

But hey, at least the Arwing model will keep me somewhat entertained. It looks great!

Said "random Link" being the Hero of Winds from the Wind Waker, y'know, arguably the third most beloved Zelda game after the N64 Zelda's...
(BotW should have a have few more years before we know what the general consensus is of that game in retrospect)
The point is, the Hero of Time and his actions are referenced in most of the subsequent games as a legend. Even Breath of the Wild has refereces of the events of Ocarina of Time in some murals near Zora's Domine.
The timeline of the whole series is affected by the Hero of Time and by that timeline split caused by him.

The Hero of Wind (outside the 2 games where he is protagonist) is really only referenced in Spirit Tracks.
Anyway, Toon Link does not represent the Hero of Wind, it represents any Link drawn in "toon" style, including the one from Minish Cap, for example.
The only Hero of Wind reference is in one taunt.

I think Young Link is kinda a similar case, they aren't refering the Link from Ocarina/Majora directly, because his moveset is still generic; they are referencing his design, not the character. Though, OoT/Majora's Link is the only one who uses that design, so indirectly, they are also referencing the character.

EDIT: Also, the Hero of Time is actually referenced with this name in Windwaker (I can't remember if in some other games as well), while the other "heroes of-" names are fan-made as far as I know, unless they come from some encyclopedia books or something, I don't know that.
Nah I'm wrong on this, I did some research and occasionally there are some quotes from Zelda games where the several Links are given "Hero of-" titles, including the Hero of Winds.

I still find it incredible people are actually disappointed Charizard lost Rock Smash

I see myself as a smash equalist, and will never hate any character that they decide to add to the game. However, :ultpacman: is absolutely the character I have the least amount of fun playing. Aside from him, I have fun with the rest of the cast.

As far as who i hate to play against? :ultbowser::ultlink: & :ultcorrin: are extremely irritating for me to fight against. Am I the only one who enjoys the challenge of playing against a good :ultbayonetta:?

Nope, I like fighting against her. Definitely more fun than fighting against :ultfox: or :ultcloud:

Looking at the replies to the UK tweets of Shulk’s trailer, I see TONS of people asking for Rex but have yet to see one Elma. Likewise for the US tweets, little to no requests for Rex, TONS for Elma

Hmm...

Well, it's not like those people have a leg to stand on. We're talking about the most lucrative franchise in the world, and people want to complain about overrepresentation?

At least Pokemon is a goldmine of unique characters. We've got nine so far, and only one can be classified as a clone of any kind.
You miscounted. There are two Pokemon clones.

:ultpichu: and :ultmewtwo:

As long as I have my trusty :4corrinf: by my side, I can at least be on the same level as a Bayonetta, making the fight fair and fun. Other than that? Yeah no...
I'd rather face a Cloud or Little Mac

From what I've seen, almost all fan reaction about Xenoblade is weirdly divided by region.

That's just going to start flaming. How about favourite Smash characters? :)
I pretty much love everyone, lol. There's only three characters in the game I actually dislike, so I'll just make this a simple top ten for the sake of time and post length. :p

10. :ultkingdedede: (DEDEDE, THAT'S THE NAME YOU SHOULD KNOW! DEDEDE, HE'S THE KING OF THE SHOW!)

9. :ultgnw: (He's one of the funniest characters on the roster, IMO. I always have a blast playing as this guy.)

8. :ultolimar: (There was a short period back in Brawl where I played him a lot, and him being in the game is what got me curious in Pikmin.)

7. :ulttoonlink: (The best Link. He's just such a lovable little dork.)

6. :ultpichu: (I've always unironically loved Pichu and wanted him back. Needless to say, I am very excited to play him in Ultimate, and would love if he somehow ends up good, lol.)

5. :ultsamus: (Metroid is probably in my top 5 franchises of all time, and Samus is just super fun to play in Smash. If it weren't for all the other characters I like putting time into, Samus would probably be one of my most played secondaries.)

4. :ultisabelle: (She's a pure doggo. 'Nuff said.)

3. :ultluigi: (I've been playing Luigi in Smash for as long as I could hold a controller. Heck, Luigi's is one of my most video game characters period, so I honestly don't think I will ever stop playing as him in Smash Bros.)

2. :ultwario: (My all time favorite video game character. Like Luigi, as long as he's in Smash, I will never stop playing as him. I may be replacing him as my main with Inkling, but he's still gonna always be in my character rotation.)

1. :ultinkling: (They're cute, they're stylish, they're awesome, they're the Inklings. Gosh, what can I really say about them that I already haven't? Splatoon really has surprised me with how much I've grown attached to it over the past couple of years, and I pulled for these guys so hard during the ballot days. Seeing them make it in, and the very first revealed, no less? That was a pretty magical moment I don't think I'll ever forget, ha ha.)

....except they aren't even remotely similar.

How can Lucario be a Mewtwo wannabe?
I think he's saying that they bassicaly have the same bodytype and neutral special.

But other than that, Mewtwo and Lucario are probably as different as day and night.

I know I'm disappointed. I personally just like to play as Charizard, I always use Charmander in any Pokémon game he's available in and have never used Squirtle or Bulbasaur before. I'll still try out the trainer, but I don't like losing the immersion by winning with "Pokémon Trainer" instead of "Charizard" To each their own, but people can have their own opinion and prefer either the trainer as a whole or Charizard by himself. I just wish I was able to play as solo Charizard in Ultimate, since he was my main in Project M, Smash 4, and Pokkén.

I think he's talking about the movie similarities, not the movesets.

Badass telepathically voiced anthropomorphic pokemon with incredible powers whom kids look up to as more of a singular character than a pokemon.

Except Mewtwo did it first. And also better.

He also still uses the Master Sword, Hero's Shield and Hookshot, which design's are specific to the Hero of Winds as well.

I mean, from a lore perspective I guess, though like you said, Toon Link's design is still brought back to this day, largely due to it still being a popular design for Link, especially in Japan and is a favourite within the Zelda team too, particularly with Eiji Aunuma as he stated fairly recently that Toon Link was his favourite Link.

I tend to view Toon Link more like what Paper Mario is to Mario, especially since the Toon Zelda games also have their own special cell shaded art style for the logo that set themselves apart from the rest of the Zelda series, as in that he kind of evolved into his own separate entity (even though their still a part of the timeline and carry the same general gameplay and whatnot)

When Smash Ultimate comes out, who's gonna be the new Little Mac and Link in terms of being used by a lot of noobs online?
I'm not saying that all Little Mac and Link users are noobs, just that a lot of new players seem to use them a lot.

I don't know what noobs use that much. I mean, I'm a noob too, but I play as Wii Fit Trainer and Zelda, so... yeah, not the example you're looking for.

Maybe Ridley for the meme factor?

Inklings.

I think a LOT of people are going to end up playing Inklings, and the majority of them will fail to actually use ink to their advantage. Like, at all.

Depending on how Simon works, I could see a lot of people gravitating towards him at first because of the reach he's gonna have. You're also probably gonna see a LOT of Ridley and K. Rool in the first few weeks of online. People will probably be playing Bayo as well. How long they play as her, though, depends on how badly she's been nerfed in the end.

Mona.

But I guess the fact that she's not the one everyone rallies behind makes it not an obvious choice. It's a shame because Mona is along with Jimmy and Wario himself one of the OG three and her microgames are the most reused and iconic in the series.
What do you mean by the "OG 3?" Jimmy T is the first character besides Wario whose games you play in the original WarioWare, and then you have Mona, Spitz, and 9 Volt. The games have never really positioned her as the obvious second banana.

You know what I really like about Pokemon Trainer? How his lines, when switching, differ on how well the individual Pokemon did, as well as the opponent's current percentage. I don't remember if his Pokemon's percentage had a factor in the lines, though. But anyway, I like how he talks to them when he sends them out and when he recalls one of them. I think it's like that way in the games as well. It's a pretty nice callback.

I don't remember the exact conditions, but they were something like this.

"Go, _____!" probably played at low percentages.

"Hang on, _____!" probably played at medium percentages.

"Just a little more, _____!" probably played at high percentages.

"Get back!" probably played when little to nothing has happened.

"Way to go!" probably played when some damage was dealt.

"Good job!" probably played when a sufficient amount of damage was dealt.

"Amazing job!" probably played when a Pokemon scored a kill and/or if enormous damage was dealt.

I hope these lines return in some form in Ultimate.

No, I'm talking about how a lot of people online use Little Mac, Cloud, Link, and Bayonetta because they're kinda cheap in a sense... So they kinda use them, as they are a little too easy to learn

Probably Ridley as he looks cool or Inklings because of Splatoon's popularity. Expect to see a lot of Ridley's down special, regardless of the situation.

Little Mac and Cloud were "noob picks" because of their fast run speed, and strong and fast smash attacks, it's how most new players are comfortable playing. None of the new characters seem to fall under that tbh.

Mewtwo and Lucario are just Samus semi-clones. They share a neutral special, after all. :p

I can't tell you how much it bothers me seeing people in all the footage online not refill their ink tanks. I have a hard time not yelling "Refill your ink! Why aren't you refilling!?" at my monitor, lol. Probably comes from being a Splatoon player that's met their untimely end thanks to low ink more times than I care to admit. :p
