Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I actually just noticed you're from Dayton. That's where I grew up. Small world! I also recognize your avatar's art style but can't quite place it.
Small world indeed! I've lived here for about ten years now. It's a nice place! As for the avatar, I tried finding the source for you but I have it saved at home and I'm at work - sorry!

So here's an off-topic question loosely related to hype:

What're the games you were the most hyped for ever?

I wonder how many people here will answer with a Smash game.
Non-Smash games?

Let's see:

Sonic Generations
Sonic Mania

Mario & Sonic At the Olympics (hey, would you blame me? First appearance of Mario and Sonic in a game together!)
Megaman 9
Megaman 10
Streets of Rage 4
Dragon Quest XI
Punch Out! Wii
Sin and Punishment: Lost Successor

(The bolded ALMOST rivaling Smash hype).

I think K. Rool has potential to be pretty good, but honestly, it's hard to say until we have the game in our hands and can lab it for a few months, lol.

The limited footage we have of him definitely makes me excited, though. A heavy with a counter, two projectiles (The blunderbuss especially. That thing looks like it could be super nasty if used right), and decent looking aerials and mobility definitely help him stand out compared to the other heavyweights, that's for sure. His recovery could suck, though, so I'm a little worried about that.
K. Rool frame data is atrocious.....

17 frames just for his bair to come out..

I'm thinking that toy gun from that mecha may be for Elma or a new design for Geno's arm-cannon/gun or whatever if he's in please.

Snake's weapons still seem to be realistic or near-realistic, and he doesn't use guns in his moveset.
Thankfully the new refined artstyle Smash Ultimate has gives Snake's weaponry a bit of a more "comic" look. His Nikita stinger doesn't look as "realistic" as it does in Smash Brawl.

I am so sorry.

I approached ME:A with a cautious optimism. ME3, on the other hand...

...let's just say that ending tore me up inside for like a month.
I now feel really bad for you. My condolences go out to you...
I think I’m going to replay the entire trilogy to remind myself why Mass Effect is still a good series despite Andromeda’s many missteps. Or just 2. 2’s the best.

On a More optimistic note, a game I was hyped for and paid off in the end is Uncharted 4. That game is beautiful. I still go back to play its multiplayer aspect with friends.

Pkmn Trainer without stamina is literally better in every way so yeah.
But he's not Charizard.

We could play as Bayonetta in 4 if our only consideration is who is "better". It doesn't matter. Some of us play our characters because we care about those characters, and some of us just aren't interested in Squirtle or Ivysaur next to Charizard.

(Not a Zard main but have a strong preference for solo Zard because it's Zard.)

The last time I was legitimately hyped for something was the Fallout announcement where we had to watch a Vault Boy bobblehead for 24h+.

Fallout 76 turned out being a multiplayer game instead of a singleplayer, and I've learned to control my hype since then.

To answer my own question:

Brawl - That was the hypest hype cycle I've ever hyped. A record snowfall cancelled the midnight release, and I trudged through all the snow the next day to get it, then walk across the length of campus to play all day with my friends. While cold and wet.
Resident Evil 5 - I couldn't stand waiting for that game. And my friend at the local game shop gave me a copy four days before street date so I could get it out of my system before finals.
Mass Effect 3 - I'd replayed ME1/2 all the way through to get the perfect Shepard the week leading up to it. And I'd spent around 100hrs on the multiplayer demo. Which, in hindsight, was kind of dumb.
Gears of War 3 - Also spent like 100+ hours on the multiplayer beta. For some reason. My friends and I couldn't stop foaming at the mouth for it after that beta kicked Gears 2's ass.
Metroid Prime - It was a Halo-ized Metroid at a time when I had a Gamecube and everyone I knew had an Xbox. I remember looking at the exact same page of the exact same magazine daily to read the preview while anxiously waiting for it.
Twilight Princess - I stayed in the cold outside a K-mart to get one of their six Wiis at launch because I refused to wait a moment longer than necessary to play the next Zelda.
Heavy Rain - To be honest, I don't remember why I became so enthralled with this game. But I bought a PS3 solely to play it. I wanted a decision-heavy, realistic thriller where any character could die if I screwed up, and I skipped a day of classes to play it when it came out.
Melee - It was the only reason I desired a Gamecube. I *had * to have Smash. It got to the point where my parents were so annoyed with my Christmas request that my dad played a prank on me on Christmas morning to make me believe I'd gotten an Xbox instead, and it made me cry.
Fire Emblem Fates - We don't talk about that one.

Past Hype:
1. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS
2. Persona 5
3. Pokemon Black and White
4. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness
5. Super Mario Galaxy 2
6. Super Mario Odyssey
7. Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia

Current Hype:
1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
2. Trails of Cold Steel III/IV
3. Persona Q2

I play a lot of games, but there aren't many that I remember feeling genuine "hype" over.
These eleven the only ones I can think of, really.

My problem with the FE characters wasn't that there were too many, just that too many of felt were too similar. That's why I was really happy that they added Robin, they were actually really unique.

This isn't meant to insult FE or FE fans, it's just how I view the differences between 2 franchises with a lot of representation:

Marth: Blue haired swordsman with only sword attacks
Ike: Blue haired swordsman with only sword attacks
Lucina: Blue haired swordsman with only sword attacks
Roy: Red haired swordsman with only sword attacks
Robin: White haired swordsmen with magic
Corrin: White haired swordsmen with magic
Chrom: Blue haired swordsman with only sword attacks

But when I look at a franchise like Mario:

Mario: Italian Plumber brawler
Dr Mario: Plumber brawler
Luigi: Italian Plumber brawler
Bowser: Monster Heavyweight
Peach: Blonde Princess Lightweight Floater
Rosalina: Blonde Princess middleweight Floater (with puppet mechanic)
Bowser Jr: Monster Mech fighter with range

Now, of course this doesn't mean that Mario is better, by any means!! It also doesn't mean that the FE inclusions aren't as good. But as someone who's not a fan of FE, to me it looks like a bunch of really similar characters, with almost half of them being clones.

And I think a lot of other people feel similarly.

But to be fair- If I didn't like Mario, I might think "It's a bunch of cartoony fighters who all look similar and play similar"

I love lists. So here's mine:
:ultsonic: Big fan of the blue blur since... Sonic 1. I owe it to Sonic Advance to recapturing my interest in the character and series.
:ultmegaman: Also, childhooh hero. Still a huge fan of his games, and with Sonic, pretty much shares spot for favorite VG character.
:ultsimon: I never owned a Castlevania game, but I loved watching my friends play them. Doesn't mean it wasn't a big part of my childhood.
:ultlittlemac: I arrived really late to the Punch Out! series. Made by the same person who made my favorite game ever, StarTropics, I had to play them.
:ultcloud: Final Fantasy was my obsession during my teenage years. And FFVII is my absolute favorite.
:ultpit: I'm a big fan of the series. Got introduced to Pit thanks to Captain N actually. And I love archer characters. (Link not so much, surprisingly).
:ultsamus: Metroid is awesome. I only started liking Metroid around the time Brawl was coming out. But Samus was always a fun character to use.
:ultryu: SF2 was my first biggest obsession when I first saw it. And Ryu was my favorite character, sharing the same fighting style I practiced.
:ultpokemontrainer: A sucker punch from Sakurai. P.T. was my favorite Brawl newcomer (beside Sonic) that I never saw coming! The embodiment of what I love about PKMN
:ultrob: I hated ROB at first... But I slowly warmed up to it. Then I noticed he had a blue pallette swap, which rescembled a side character, Nav-Com from StarTropics (again, my favorite game ever) so I picked him up as my main, since it was the closest I could get to a StarTropics representative.

Aside of Smash:
I was super hyped for Zelda Twilight Princess. Though the game disappointed me in every possible way, so the hype died very fast after the release.
I think that Majora's Mask remake hyped me a bit too, though being the same game + little visual upgrade due to 3DS not being powerful limited my hype.
I was hyped for the second DLC of Kirby Star Allies because it finally brought back Adeleine after 18 years of me wanting a return of her and getting nothing.

I can't remember what other game... After many delusions, I became very pessimist with new game releases, so I never hype myself too much... though I follow the scene of some games because I'm curious and I want to know how they turn out (Sonic Games for example).
I eventually start to like a game only after I play it and I actually see that it's good, not from some trailers and promotional announcements.

ME2 is the one I always go back to.

ME1 shows its age a bit too much, and its inventory and difficulty are absolutely broken. ME3 has the Citadel DLC-- which is the best thing ever-- but its Crucible assets thing and sidequests are so unnecessary, and the ending itself kills the desire for more playthroughs.

ME2 is the one with no dead space, no unessential padding. Every moment feels worthwhile, so you WANT to go back and play it. And the suicide mission, to that music...

So here's an off-topic question loosely related to hype:

What're the games you were the most hyped for ever?

I wonder how many people here will answer with a Smash game.
-Super Mario RPG (was by far the most WTF Mario game at the time, even with the early concept art)

-Super Mario 64 (kids today will never understand how big of a deal this game was)

-Diddy Kong Racing (it was action adventure Mario Kart, how could you not be?)

-Every Smash game, including the original.

-Pokemon Red and Blue because Nintendo's marketing was super aggressive and yet super effective, having Nintendo send out MF video tapes as early as January 1998.

-Banjo Tooie (still one of my favorite sequels to any game of all time)

-Kingdom Hearts (even offered to buy it for a friend because I didn't have a PS2)

-Star Fox Adventures (to say I was disappointed is a huge understatement)

-Viewtiful Joe (one of the rare times Nintendo bothered to release a demo disc)

-Twilight Princess (probably the most over hyped Nintendo game of all time. A lot of people are still salty to this day.)

-Super Mario Galaxy (fell in love immediately with the E3 06 trailer)

-Kid Icarus: Uprising (the E3 10 trailer was such a great surprise and I wanted to see a Kid Icarus revival. I hope the Mysterious Murasame Castle eventually gets a similar treatment.)

That pretty much covers it.

That's just going to start flaming. How about favourite Smash characters? :)
This will be fun. These will be in no particular order except for one psychic feline.

1.:ultmewtwo: I loved the film “Mewtwo Strikes Back” as a kid even though the 4Kids dub painted Mewtwo as a full blown villain and leaving out parts that made Mewtwo such a complex character. It’s also a shame the dub left out the scene with Ai-two/Amber-two in theatrical release. Film aside, it was my main in Smash 4 and I look forward to maining ‘two again in Ultimate.

2. :ultridley: I love dragons and I love Sci-Fi. Combine the two and you’ve got perfection.

3. :ultkrool: I played DKC 1-3 extensively as a kid so I’m a bit biased on this one. Plus, his boss battle music in the three games are all godly imo.

4. :ultisabelle: She’s beauty, she’s grace, she’ll pom-pom you in the face.

5/6. :ultyoshi::ultkirby: Both cuties with ravenous appetites and childhood favorites.

Nothing is ever going to top Brawl's release for me. That was just the single greatest game night of my life.

Went to GameStop for the midnight tourney with 3 of my buds. Got my butt kicked, but one of the guys there egged me on to keep practicing, which is ultimately what lead me to get into the competitive scene.

Got the game, went home, and we all crowded around our big TV in the basement with blankets all over the floor. We played a lot, had a blast, but ultimately, we all had one goal: We NEEDED:sonic:.
We each took turns running through classic mode ten times. We didn't even know if it was going to work, I just googled how some Japanese players had gotten Sonic and we knew there was no way we were going to play 300 matches, beat subspace or play 10 hours (although now that I know it's 10 hours split between 4 players, we probably would have gotten Sonic anyway the more I think about it. But we didn't know that). So we did the Classic Mode method, and thankfully it worked, to our excitement. I had conked out for a little bit for the last few runs (Brawl was the first all nighter I had ever had since my parents were strict, but definitely not my friends first time) and they woke me up so I could take on Sonic. They did it with Wario, and I'd never even touched him, so I lost pretty bad. So I had to run through Classic mode AGAIN (Or at least, we thought we had to), and of course I felt it was right to do it with :mario2:.

Made it to the end, and I remember each and every moment of that fight VIVIDLY. I kept bumping into the checkpoint, Sonic refused to let me hit him, and we were both eventually at nearly 100 percent. Smash Ball appeared. Sonic hit it a lot, but I forward aired the **** out of it, got the Smash Ball, back tossed Sonic up to the walk off, unleashed the Mario Finale, and watched as the flames carried Sonic off screen. Every single one of us popped off and screamed. Greatest damn moment of my entire gaming life.

We played the rest of the night until morning. Thought my folks would kill me, but they gave me a pass since they knew it was so important to me and my buds. Greatest night ever, man.

Just felt like sharing that.

As for my most-hyped games...
I was all over ORAS before launch, and absolutely loved it. No joke, I sat down and, without getting up at all, beat the game with one of my friends (in a total of around 6-7 hours). I realize that this is why many people hate the game, but as an 10 year old it was incredible.
Mario Galaxy 2 had be pretty hyped, as 1 was (and still is) my favorite game ever.
Sun/Moon had me super hyped before launch, but I was super disappointed with the actual game, and the hype killed quickly. I never really payed attention to USUM.
Kirby Triple Deluxe, another one that I was super disappointed with.
And, of course, Sm4sh and Ultimate.

It's good to keep that perspective.

For example, when my brother in law saw my brother and me playing Dragonball FighterZ, he couldn't tell the difference between half the characters we were using. He just knows them as "Goku". (The characters in question were Goku Blue, Vegito, Broly, Gohan, Bardock and Android 18.)

Obviously any Dragonball fan knows the difference, but to an outside observer, they can be forgiven for not knowing details. But not many non-Dragonball fans are playing that game. Smash is a different beast, because this has so many franchises represented, and there are certain to be franchises a Smash player isn't familiar with. When they announced Shulk for Smash 4, I legitimately had to google "who the hell is Shulk".

I was hyped for the following;

Breath of The Wild: I am still amazed that this game lives up to the expectations. Hell, it surpassed them in many ways.

Samus Returns: Samus’s triumphant and glorious return was amazing. The most fun I’ve had in a 2D Metroid title.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Pretty good game. Visuals are spectacular, gameplay was great, and I liked the characters.

Awakening and Fates: And then we have these two. I’ve learned not to give into hype thanks to these two.

As far as currently hyped for games go:
Ultimate
Devil May Cry 5
Bayonetta 3
Resident Evil 2 Remake
Shin Megami Tensei V

If Isaac is a assist trophy, he better have a beard so we can hopefully still have some sort of hope for Matthew... Whom would be better than nothing.

Oh and have Arcanus as a boss so we can finally get to fight him!

Oh man. I forgot about how hyped I was for Starfox Adventures.

If I remember right, it came out around the same time as Mario Sunshine or Metroid Prime, can't remember which. But my parents weren't going to buy me another game so soon, so I got my first ever "jobs" babysitting for one neighbor and mowing the lawn for the other to "earn" it.

(I'm pretty sure they talked with those two neighbors to give me something to do, in hindsight. The neighbor I mowed the lawn for already had a kid two years older than me who mowed it.)

How about favourite Smash characters? :)
Favorite Smash characters? Yeah, I'll bite.

No particular order, my top 11 (aka the Nostalgia Critic rules).

1. :ultsonic: Sonic the Hedgehog. He's been one of my VERY favorite characters PERIOD, video games or otherwise. He fits right in with my usual "Up close and personal" play style and what can I say, I love him and have since I first played Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Can't see myself NOT playing as him (unless they add my other boy, Shadow, in which case, Sonic may have to share some of his screen time at my place.)

2. :ultridley: Ridley. I mean, come on, he's a playable Ridley! I can't wait to take him for a spin. That move where he grinds his opponents across the floor... I'm gonna get SO much satisfaction out of that. I love what I see so far!

3. :ultkrool: King K. Rool. He's here, at long last. In fact, he's so exciting, my brother is actually wanting to get a Nintendo Switch just for K Rool (and the Castlevania stuff) and he hasn't played or LIKED a Nintendo product for a decade. Cheesy as it sounds, King K. Rool is bringing my family together.

4. :ultshulk: Shulk. I've always liked him, I've been on the Xenoblade bandwagon since day one way back on the original Wii, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Like with Sonic before, I don't see myself NOT playing as Shulk unless they add Elma or another Xenoblade character, in which case he'll have to share screentime. But no, when I played Xenoblade Chronicles on the original Wii when it was new, I remember walking across the vast landscapes and going "Shulk had BETTER be in Super Smash Bros" and I got my wish.

5. :ultlittlemac: Little Mac. A similar story to Shulk. I was quite attached to the original Wii, and I LOVED the Wii Punch-Out!! game. Much like with Xenoblade, when I played the Wii Punch-Out!! I said "Little Mac had better be in a new Smash after this" and not only did he get added, he even brought his different colored gloves and trunks from the different circuits (no helmet for losing 100 times though. Smash Mac's not a loser I guess). Much like Sonic, he's really "up close and personal", so he fits my general style really well.

6. :ultdaisy: Daisy. What can I say? I like Daisy. I never really played as Peach because I HATE Peach as a character, but I like Daisy, so I'm willing to give this a chance. It's great to have her around! I NEVER imagined she'd be the first character shown off at E3 of all places but hey! Things happen.

7. :ultryu: Ryu. I LOVE Ryu! Ever since I watched the "Uncut, Uncensored, Unleashed" release of Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie when I was in high school and the entirety of Street Fighter II V, I wanted Ryu in Smash SO BAD. I fanboyed SO HARD when he jump-kicked the dude in the face THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD and didn't get any glass stuck in his bare feet or anything. I've won SEVERAL fights with him since he was added... he's my kinda guy.

8. :ultdoc: Dr. Mario. I like Mario, but I like DOCTOR Mario more. He has a bit more power to his attacks and he fights at a rhythm that better suits me. Plus, I really love the idea of a pugilistic doctor who throws pills at people. He's a villain in my headcanon, but even then, I can't help but love the guy.

9. :ultdk: Donkey Kong. I've played Donkey Kong since the first Smash Bros, but I kinda threw him to the backburner since Brawl since I did not like his Final Smash AT ALL. His new Final Smash in Ultimate is much more my speed. The DKC games were huge in my childhood, the DKC cartoon was a regular watch when I was small (much to the dismay of the people around me), and whether it was Barrel 007, Interplanetary Visitor Dudes, taking Cranky's vacuum cleaner for a race that got so intense he crashed through the wall with the vacuum cleaner, or being dumped in the arctic by Funky Kong because K. Rool made everyone hate him, DK always seemed to somehow come through. Donkey Kong was actually quite important in my life, so I kinda repay him by playing as him... cheesy, but hey, whatever.

10. :ultyounglink: Young Link. I've always liked Young Link more than regular Link, even way back when. For a while I was worried that Toon Link had pretty much replaced him (not that I don't like Toon Link, I quite like him and his whole Samurai Jack look). But now he's back and I can't wait to take him for a spin again.

11. :ultrob: R.O.B. He's always been something of a secret weapon for me. He's a lot more versatile than he looks and even though the NES was never really my thing, R.O.B. himself is just curious enough that I kinda like him, and I love how he's been made into this "Last of His Kind" type character. And to top it off, R.O.B.'s got some MEAN attacks that always come through for me in a pinch.

In no particular order, and only based on the character themselves, not their playstyles or anything.

There's this here:
https://gonintendo.com/stories/2711...cent-mech-toy-purchase-he-made-teases-that-it

They say he bought a toy based on an anime.

Now that I think about it, though, that gun the robot is holding doesn't look like it'd be for Geno; I'd imagine a small gun/cannon that's more Mario series-esque, or something like the weapons Legacy XP mod's Geno has.
Watch it in action though. When it fires it looks like Geno Beam

Not saying it has anything to do with Geno though

Favorite Smash characters?

:ultmario:- The Everyman. I like his serious look in Smash. He's not the silly, jumpy man in Smash but determined and focused.

:ultfox:- My first main back in 64. Hasn't been one of my main characters since but out of sentimentality I try to be semi competent with him in each Smash game.

:ulticeclimbers:- I just love their whole concept and how they're arguably the most obscure characters to get into Smash. I think they're a good metaphor for a romantic relationship too.

:ultike:-Absolutely hated Ike until I decided to play Path of Radiance. Made me see him in a totally different light. A boy that overcomes his weaknesses including racial prejudice to become a legendary general. One of my favorite video game characters period.

:ultisabelle:- Hopefully winds up being as big of a troll character as Wii Fit. I was hoping she'd get in just to see what they'd do with her and also to see people seeth if she winds up being good.

:ultkingdedede:- After Geno and Megaman, was my most wanted character to get into Smash. He's a prick but God does he just ooze character.

:ultmegaman:- My number 2 for Smash after Geno and also my third favorite video game character after Mario. I also really appreciate the sheer amount of detail Sakurai put into him as a Smash fighter and, as a long time Megaman fan, it's greatly appreciated.

:ultvillager:- A character I never expected but secretly wanted for ages. I like how his moveset bounces back and forth from being playful to utterly devestating. The bowling ball and tree are still hilarious to me.

:ultwario:- Wario and Dedede were practically tied for my third most wanted characters in Smash. I like him for many of the same reasons why I like Dedede plus he's just so damn quirky in Smash.

:ultwiifittrainer:- The Ultimate troll reveal. Pretty much fell in love instantly because of the mountains of salt her reveal produced. Wound up being my main secondary for SSB4, winning me a lot of local tournaments in the process.

So here's an off-topic question loosely related to hype:

What're the games you were the most hyped for ever?

I wonder how many people here will answer with a Smash game.
It's Kingdom Hearts 3. Sorry Smash Bros, but you're not Kingdom Hearts 3.

I've waited for this game for nearly a decade. I played Kingdom Hearts 2 in the fourth grade and avidly followed the series ever since. I bought a PSP mainly for Birth by Sleep, and bought a PS3 because I thought KH3 would come out on it (my sister gets good use out of it though so it's alright). I've replayed the games multiple times, and overall I love the series. So far the game looks absolutely stunning; it will be one of the best games on both the PS4 and Xbox One. This is especially noteworthy because of the development hell that this game has been through (it was announced in 2013). Every trailer reveals a new twist that I'm interested in learning more about, and with every bit of gameplay I see I'm only more excited to actually get my hands on it.

Plus it comes out a week after my birthday, so that's nice.
