Wow, lot of funky misinformation here about this card.
First off, "box theory" was/is not about the number of "empty spots", it was about the order of the characters and what that accidentally revealed about the other side of the box. This card has nothing to do with that, and nothing to do with the box at all except a similar number of "empty slots" by simple virtue of the numbers 72 and 72 being equal.
Second, this is a "pre-order card", an incredibly unimportant piece of paper that some marketing guy slapped together in a day at the request of retailers, so they could hand out something to kids. "Why didn't they just wait for 2 more character reveals?!?" What? Because it's for pre-orders, the retailers wanted it yesterday, how is this a question? It's like asking why they don't wait to put the DLC characters on the game's box, jeez.
People keep saying "well the box was just a render that could change, BUT THIS IS A PRINTED PIECE OF PAPER!"
Yes. And one of these is the centerpiece of the game's permanent physical retail presence, and the other is literally a temporary placeholder by definition.
"I don't get it, why are you arguing, these two things agree with each other? They both suggest 2 empty slo--"
First, stop it with the slots, and re-read what I said above. Second, my irritation in all of this off-the-rails-hype train has never been "people are wrong about which characters might get into Smash." I'm too old for that game. And in my oldness, my irritation is "We live in a society where it is increasingly important that people process information and news in a logical, dispassionate way, in which precedents and sources of various quality levels are considered appropriately."
I'm bothered because if circumstances were different and this dinky card didn't match "the box" in some way, there's a 100% chance we'd be having a big, dumb argument that would be really stupid. I don't care that we dodged this argument, I want to prevent many future arguments. I want Sakurai to be able to say "Now we have 103 stages" or "We only have a few more fighters left" and people actually believe that over text posts on 4chan.
