Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Hawlucha would also be pretty good as well.
Yeah, but we honestly have no idea how much support he got (and it'd be tough to justify Gen 6 getting another Pokemon over other gens).

Still, using a natural Disaster where many people died, as an excuse for your character being in, is very disrespectful... The Animal Crossing announcement basically confirmed that Isabelle was meant to be the character announced from the Direct at the start... I highly doubt that Isaac is in the game, Being a fan favorite is one thing, but not having a game in 8 years is another (Camelot seems to have no intent on revitalizing the series, and has turned it's focus back on Mario Sports Games)... (K. Rool got in because his franchise was still alive already represented, and because he was very likely the true winner of the ballot). Not all the characters in this game are gonna be fan favorites, you know? *Cough* Inkling
It might be wise to post this in the Isaac support thread, to prevent any further awkwardness.

Camelot working on recent Mario sports games wouldn't be so bad if they had more effort put into them like the old days, though.

Well, I think he's cool. I also love Dark-types, so I have a bias. Probably in my top 5 for starters, alongside Greninja, Decidueye, Sceptile and Blaziken.

For some Pokémon talk, here's this:

This guy had an idea I've had for years: what if each character was a Pokémon, what would their typing be? The Pokémon are soooooo obvious, though.
So this is what's at the top of Smash reddit? Not only is it low effort content, but a lot of these are poor/unimaginative (why so many Normals?!)

If there is another direct this month what is the general consensus for characters?
I definitely know who I'm rooting for.
What is up with all the Inciniroar hate? I think he’s really cool. Is it jus5 because people want a grass type character?
To me It's just because he strikes me as a slow heavyweight power character, and I use fast nimble characters, so those type of 'strong but slow' characters don't fit my playstyle. I don't play them, cause no matter how many times I try to implement it, or use the characters, I just don't have as much fun. So in the end he's a character I'll never use (except once in order to see how he fights in training mode), but to all who like Incineroar, that cool.

If anything, if he came to smash, I'd wish that Hawlucha would come too as a double reveal, so we get two types of wrestling, people can have the powerhouse Heel Wrestler, and others can have the nimble Face Wrestler, added plus if Hawlucha plays like Rey Mysterio, my favorite Wrestler, using DDT's, and other ways of throwing foes by using their own weight against them, and somehow referenced the 619 into his Final Smash

Also since Pikachu Libre is in Smash, do you all think there's a chance Sakurai will slightly change Pikachu's Up-Throw, to reference the Stone Cold Stunner move from Pokken?

But Inklings are fan favorites and were legitimately one of the most requested characters in the Ballot period? Regardless of them also being an ultra-relevant pick, they were one of the most popular newcomers you could include in Ultimate.

Yeah, a lot of Normals could have been changed. :ultsimon::ultrichter::ultsnake::ultwolf::ultsheik:, at least to me. Over there is mostly fanart, simple questions, and things like this. I usually wait for neat observations, but this is something close to an idea I had years ago, but not exactly it.

Wait... are they still discussing that as a potential possibility in there?
Wow... and I thought Waluigi Fans were heartless

Last I checked, they didn't rank that high in fan polls... But I'm happy that they're in

At the discretion of not offending an entire country again, I'll retry this.

I think Rayman may show up in there.

In terms of nimble face wrestlers, if we can't have Hawlucha, we can always have this guy.

Also, there's a small chance Pikachu's up throw could be changed, since Sakurai seems to show a bit more focus on overall wrestling this time (e.g. K. Rool's sumo stomp).

Wait... are they still discussing that as a potential possibility in there?
Wow... and I thought Waluigi Fans were heartless

No idea, I don't recall seeing it brought up recently. You could ask, just in case.

I have another question. Since I plan to get the SSBU edition Pro Controller, can anyone tell how the Pro Controller works on the Switch?

Like, how is the battery power? How does it charge? How do I connect it to the Switch (wired or wireless)? Is the button layout easier to get used to than the GC controller?

So quick question to everyone here. Who seems like the most likely Top 5 character to appear in Ultimate given recent events?

Battery power, charges via a USB C cable.

You can either plug it into a switch dock’s USB port or by connecting at the controller screen.

Button layout is fine. It’s a great controller

Except they did? Every Ballot poll I saw had them in the top 10 up there with all the popular choices, with several having them at top 5 and competing with the likes of K. Rool, and according to SSB4Dojo's Poll compilation data, they were 7th overall (without Japanese data considered, where Splatoon and Inklings are even more popular).

So, it has plugs to connect it to the Switch and a charging cable too. I'm getting that right, right? That's okay.

Splatoon launched (late May) after the ballot launched (early April).
Along with that I saw a lot of people treating the character like a lock and that they were going to get in without the ballot so there's a solid chance a lot of people didn't vote for them for that reason.

The Switch Pro Controller works very nicely in my opinion, it really is a solid controller all around. Button layout is good, very similar to the Wii U Pro controller if you happen to be familiar with that one, so very easy to get accustomed to. It is my preferred way to play Switch games by far, even when using it in handheld mode, barring a couple of games such as Super Mario Odyssey.

Battery life lasts for approximately 40 hours on a full charge, though not as impressive as a Wii U Pro controller (which in itself was at 80 hours), the added features to the Switch Controller such as HD Rumble, Gyro Support and the built-in NFC capability really outweigh the lesser battery life by comparison.

It charges by way of a USB Cable, which you can plug into a USB Slot on the Switch Dock for convenience. Pairing it to the Switch itself is relatively easy, as it comes with a SYNC button on top of the controller. You can use it either plugged in while charging or wirelessly, so totally up to you how you want to use it.

I've been using my Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Special Edition Pro controller since last December, and it has worked like a champ for me. I too am getting the Smash Ultimate Pro controller (I love its color scheme, so sleek), and will probably keep my XC2 one as a backup / extra for someone else to use when playing multiplayer games. Hopefully I've been able to answer your questions about in an appreciable manner, and I hope you do get to secure your own SSBU Pro controller. :)

Ken, Incineroar, Steve, Shadow as a semi clone and last is Geno if the SE rep is base-game or Sora if he's DLC

I don't explicitly think it confirms or deconfirms Steve or any minecraft content as the devs at Mojang likely wouldn't know but it's something to think about.

Ken, Incineroar, and Steve are obviously the top 3 at the moment, in that order. Geno would probably be next based on the Vergeben's claim of a square rep.
After that, we don't really have any leaks to go off of, so I'd say Dee or Shadow, as they're very strong contenders. As much as I'd like to put Chorus Kids up there, these others just surpass them in likelihood I feel.

Okay... But explain that one highly rumored character that I can't call by name without a spoiler tag?
Ya know...
Incineroar? Last I checked, they weren't that high on the ballot, in fact the public didn't even know about them at the time of the ballot...
Not all characters are gonna be high fan requests... If it was... Then it would be very boring... (Trust me the reveal trailers for Ridley and K. Rool were so boring just because they were predictable...)
That's why I like the surprise characters like Wii Fit Trainer and Ice Climbers. It makes the hype fun...
Exactly the same for me. But RH is a wishful thinking, I guess?
Maybe, But I can dream :p. Besides, assuming one was cut from Smash 4, Sakurai probably had a move set planned for them. It would be such a shame to scrap it after going through all that work brainstorming a character... (before you mention the The Forbidden 7 of Brawl, All of the scrapped characters like Toon Zelda, Dixie Kong, and Plusle & Minun, seem to have been low priority clones... This is completely different)
Whats everyones opinion on kens likelihood? I low key worry he might not be in
Don't worry, I'm Like 98% Sure that he's in...

I think Ken might be the closest thing to a lock, without even taking leaks into account. As soon as they announced echo fighters, it made perfect sense to add the original fighting game echo into Smash, especially since the character he echoes is already in the game.

Of course, nothing is a guarantee in Smash, but he's the character that makes the most sense to be in as an echo. So I'd give it an 75% chance for the base roster.

Geno was a playable character. I don't know much Zelda one-offs who was also playable characters in their game, unless if you count Midna.
Hyrule warriors and majoras mask

Technically phantom hour glass for gorons too

W8ndwaker for rito too

I'm low-key hoping for one of those. Due to the Wrecking Crew license renewal, I'm thinking Foreman Spike might be the one.

But of course, this thread likes to be boring and assume we're just getting two guys that Varnish "leaked", so it is what it is.

Pokemon is always the big exception, Pokemon itself can be argued to be the biggest video game franchise in the world, with countless Smash-viable characters that are more popular than most of Smash's roster and can provide wholly unique movesets/character designs, while TPC has considerable pull on what Pokemon content gets included. Regardless though this isn't about if every newcomer will be highly requested, I was just simply refuting your original statement that the Inklings weren't big fan requests.

Geno sucks

If we can't get mainline Zelda one offs what makes geno special
I'm just gonna quote this, so all of the Geno Fanboys Deservingly attack you... (I'm not one of them, But I am trying to help support them, they've been asking for him for way too long)
Besides, Geno is insanely popular compared to any of the requested one off Zelda Rep...
Skull Kid only became big again after the dumb Chair Theory and Loz the Liar... Not really good evidence if you ask me...

It's a typical PR nonanswer that really tells us nothing, as they wouldn't be able to say anything anyway because of NDAs. At best they didn't outright deny it like the DMC producer did about Dante so we can just deduce it's still possible.

My top 5 might be Ken, Incienroar, Steve?, Geno, and Shadow.

I would be surprised if Sakurai throws unexpected fighters at us.

If I'm taking leaks into account:
1. Ken
2. Incineroar
3. Shadow
4. Geno (although he can be replaced be any Square rep)
5. Elma

The leak on Steve seems very questionable to me, so I'm not putting any real though into Steve being playable until I see something more convincing. Although I do believe there will be Minecraft content in the game (maybe a stage or a Creeper assist).

Well for most people it seems to be:

1. Ken (E)
2. Incineroar
3. Shadow (E)
4. Geno
5. Steve

Unless if you want my opinion, then taking things into account it's:

1. Elma
2. Lycanroc/Incineroar
3. Geno
4. Isaac
5. Felix (E)

I would've added Rhythm Heaven as well, but it seems less likely. But remove Felix and those are the top 5 likely brand newcomers. I'm taking the possibility of Incineroar as well, but I think the Lycanrocs still have a good chance as well.

The battery power for the Pro Controller is excellent. I usually get somewhere around 40 or so hours on it before needing to charge. You can connect it to your Switch (and even use it as a PC controller on Steam!) by connecting it with the included USBC cable (which also charges it). As for button layout, I like it quite a lot. An issue I always had with the GC controller was the janky shoulder buttons and awkward placement of buttons like Z and Y, but the Pro Controller uses uses the super comfortable (IMO, at least) layout of the 3DS while mixing it with the same nice joystick layout of things like the GC controller or the Xbox One controller. The only criticism I could give the Pro Controller is that the D-Pad kinda sucks, as diagonal presses are super touchy and can be inputted accidentally very easily. However, from what I've read, the only people who have those issues seem to be people like me who bought year 1 models, so it may not be an issue anymore.

Honestly, while I will probably use the GC controller quite a bit with this game, I'm probably gonna put more time into the Pro Controller. The biggest reason for me is that I plan on playing this game in handheld quite a bit like I do my other Switch games, so using the Pro Controller as my main controller will allow me to keep the same muscle memory I learned from playing Smash 3DS and will allow me to go from Pro Controller to Joy Con without too much hassle.
