Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I love Splatoon for a lot of reasons. The gameplay is delightfully refreshing given the genre, the artstyle and overall aesthetic appeals to me, the music is great, and the lore and characters are surprisingly interesting and a ton of fun. To go a little more in-depth, though...:

I absolutely adore the gyro aiming. It's just so intuitive, and is probably the best control scheme for any shooter I've played, only topped by mouse and keyboard. I feel like Splatoon's mechanics really help it stand out, especially when you consider all the different weapon types that are mixed with those mechanics. Each weapon makes me feel like I'm playing a different class with their own unique play styles, and it gets even deeper than that when you realize each weapon type has dozens of variations, practically giving you subclasses to play with. Mixing the gear you wear for abilities and choosing the weapon that is the class you like but also containing the sub weapons and specials that suit you is really fun to me, as I'm someone who's always enjoyed variety and light min-maxing.

Another thing I love about the game is the fact the singleplayer is actually pretty darn great if your someone that enjoys tightly designed levels and creative platforming. Octo Expansion especially really hits home how fantastic the game's mechanics are and how creative you can get with them, giving you a variety of challenges that while difficult, are fair and very satisfying to complete. Not to mention this game offers you multiple weapon choices for these levels, giving fantastic replayability, as different weapons means different strategies and solutions to the level's puzzles and challenges. The writing is also great in these single player modes, with each character having super fun personalities and quirky humor that rivals the likes of Paper Mario IMO.

I could probably write a book on why I love Splatoon, so I'll just end off here before the post gets a little too long, lol. Hope this helps explain why I love the series as much as I do. :)
Hmm. Interesting! I've never played Splatoon before, and was interested in getting into the series. Very insightful! Perhaps I'll try out the series in the future!

I dunno about the fandom not liking new 1st party franchises.

I want Isaac, Wonder Red, Saki, John Reimi from Geist, anyone from Eternal Darkness, I supported the hell outta Shulk and Little Mac, the amount of people pulling for Inkling as DLC was deafening at times, and back to Isaac he's one of, if not the, biggest characters in speculation right now, we rooting for Banjo swishes he was still a Nintendo IP, ****in ARMS, the list goes on. I don't think the Fandom is against new 1st party franchises, it's just that many of them are unlikely, for base at least.

One reason I am rooting for Isaac so much is because I actively WANT a new franchise representative. Believe me dude, people like new first party franchise representatives.

Edit: not sure if I misinterpreted your post after what Zinith said, let me know.
You got a like for the Isaac comment, but you get a comment for John Raimi.

So if you had to bring back one mode from previous Smash games, what would it be and why?

For me it'd be either Melee's Adventure Mode, Brawl's Subspace Emmisary, or Smash 4's Smash Run. Because all 3 of those modes were great single player content.
Probably Smash Run. All it needs is better enemy variety, more maps and some added multiplayer functionality. I'm assuming that Spirits might play like Adventure Mode, and SSE is kind of overrated anyway.

So quick question to everyone here. Who seems like the most likely Top 5 character to appear in Ultimate given recent events?
I love how besides the Big 2/3 everyone has different opinions on who is left. Really shows how little we know atm and how much room there is for some unexpected fighters.

Why do people assume Isabelle's inclusion has nothing to do with fan requests?
Honestly she could've been a bigger name on the ballot, we really have no way of knowing for sure.

I'm just saying that because it did shift conversation a lot when Isabelle was revealed.

Incineroar, Ken, Geno, Shadow, and Elma are probably what I'm personally most confident in. Geno in my eyes is a little shaky, but still a pretty safe bet all things considered. It mainly depends on what happens with certain rumors floating around right now.

One Mode? Adventure Mode is definitely nice in general, but I still want my Bonus Mode back. It's simple and fun...

Especially how it's style that wins, not just simply being the last one standing/getting more KO's. Of course, the Bonuses unlocking a trophy shouldn't return. That was just tedious as is(especially No Damage Run...).

Well, I think he's cool. I also love Dark-types, so I have a bias. Probably in my top 5 for starters, alongside Greninja, Decidueye, Sceptile and Blaziken.

For some Pokémon talk, here's this:

This guy had an idea I've had for years: what if each character was a Pokémon, what would their typing be? The Pokémon are soooooo obvious, though.
Wow, this is just...disappointing really. Dude uses Normal type way too much.
So, I was on the FNAF Reddit. Mindin mah own business. And. Uh...
Exactly what is this supposed to be?
I see a lot of people claiming we're getting this or that, what where the moments that changed the speculation of Ultimate to get to the state that it is now?
Was it the Vergeben leaks?
Was it Isabelle?
Was it the placeholder box?
The Vergeben leaks marked a drastic shift in speculation, as did the reveal of Ridley, who established that no character is too big this time around.
I'd say Intern-kun's intervention before the 8.8.2018 Direct was pretty big, as was the delay of the 9.13.2018 Direct.
The Box marked a much needed return to skepticism about the roster size, but also displayed the large amount of denial Smash fans display with things such as blog theory rising to prominence
Isabelle also showed that this game isn't just appealing to the hardcore fanbase, but fanbases outside of that as

As someone who loves Xenoblade.

It's really grindy, melodramatic and a bit brain dead at times.

Two words.

SUBSPACE EMISSARY.

Fix up the gameplay, then get some actual Nintendo enemies and worlds in there.
I just really want some more cutscenes.

I've been thinking about this for the last few days, and i'm sure a good amount of people will continue to speculate the way they do up until the roster is finalized...before release or otherwise. There's been a lot of discussion of "fan favorites" getting into the game, or if the game is totally planned on being "fanservice". I think it's overwhelmingly obvious that the game already is fanservice.

As a big Smash fan, I'm already used to rewatching the Direct coverage from E3, August, and the character trailers. I'm just that excited. One thing I've noticed is the wording that is used when describing the "Everyone is here!"

Sakurai, or at least his translator says, "We believe that's what players want, so we made the impossible, possible." This not only indicates "fan wants" as a pillar to the appeal of the game, but substantiates the idea that the veterans being brought back were because of demand through the Smash Ballot. inklings are a pick that are not only obvious based on success on the Wii U, but they were absolutely a popular pick post-release of Smash Wii U.

When referring to Snake, Sakurai introduces him by saying, "Back by popular demand..." This is yet another indicator that characters were picked by demand. It doesn't mean every character was, but at least some of them.

In the gameplay session directly following the initial Direct, Sakurai mentions the "overseas popularity" of Ridley, and how that played a part in his inclusion. When he briefly talked about Chrom and Dark Samus, he mentioned that they were wanted by the fans. When he wrote about King K. Rool in his Famitsu column, according to SourceGaming mentioned how popular he was in the Smash Ballot.

While I don't know that we've heard anything on the popularity of Daisy and the Belmonts, I'd like to stress that at least 5 characters out of the 9 we've gotten so far have been specifically pointed out as popular picks. Even then, it's not like the characters that weren't specifically noted for having sizable popularity didn't have popularity at all. I'd argue the entire reason Daisy was upgraded was because of getting votes. Then you have the fact that the returning veterans were likely because of votes they got in the ballot.

Basically, while I'm not trying to say you can't be unsatisfied with your most wanted getting in, consider the fact that Sakurai is specifically addressing fan demand in a number of different ways.

Just because he doesn't add another character that is currently labeled as a popular pick doesn't mean he's not addressing fan demand. I'd argue he's done an incredibly great job thus far.

Can confirm the grindy part at least

I STILL haven’t beaten the original Xenoblade to this day because of a certain late game boss...you know the one. At that point in the game grinding ascends being a chore to downright intimidating

X’s postgame isn’t much better, prepare to spend hours on end getting materials for weapons, armor and Skells to take on the super Tyrants

Just use Melia.

Like for real, she destroys the boss.

Gameplay just didn't click with me. Auto-attacking felt way too passive for my liking and I couldn't get the flow of the combat down. Also heard it was pretty grind heavy, so considering I didn't enjoy the core gameplay loop, I didn't want to stick with it after hearing it had another thing I really didn't like.

For a Wii game it's really pretty though, and Shulk seemed like a neat character, for what it's worth.

I wasn't aware of Xenoblade until shulk got in the smash AND then, I saw Xenoblade 2 trailer which I thought it to be cool. Played the XC2, and found it to be interesting.

I’ll try...might need some crystals/augments too (I forgot the XC1 name, they’re called Augments in X)

Got any recommendations?
I mean, just do whatever you feel is best there.

If you have trouble with the boss though, get stuff that specifically guards against its attacks.

I feel like Isabelle is proof we're not just getting big fan-requested characters from the general community.

While I acknowledge that, yes, there were a lot of people that wanted her and it's likely (if not 100% certain at this point) she received a lot of requests, the general Smash community seemed to not care, nor bother to put her on their fan-polls to my knowledge. There may be other characters that did well on the ballot that the general community would be surprised to see due to not much vocal support. Vergeben actually said Simon did surprisingly well on the ballot, though how his sources got that info I'm not sure; however, I'll note that in another gamefaqs thread he mentioned him being chosen to promote upcoming Castlevania games, though as we've learned the recently released one seems to be PS4-exclusive...

I have heard some ppl who think Ken could be like Isabelle in a way and end up as a semiclone
If ken is an echo then he does have to have a few changes no matter what
UpB, SideB, NeutralB, DownB, heavy ftilt and fsmash would all need to be changed to some degree either cause ken never had that move (heavy ftilt and fsmash) or because in the games they function slightly differently.
I wonder if ken would be a semiclone with his moveset being a mix of all the different kens across sf history or if hed just be the most unique echo

General Smash fanbase tends to think "popular" and "promotional" as mutually exclusive but it's kinda ridiculous to say Isabelle and/or Simon wasn't wanted by a ton of fans regardless of their reason of inclusion.

If it's fanservice, they did a great job, when you ignore the complaints coming from certain fans.

First off, remember the Dante leak a while back? I dunno if it’s the same person but there’s been an update on that front and...I suddenly don’t want Dante any more...

Here’s a few more, searching “Ken Incineroar” on fireden:

DmC Dante isn't as bad as make me stop wanting Dante in the game. Actually, I like him as a stand-alone design.

There's no way that Dante leak is real. After all the contraversy DmC's "Daniel" I refuse to call him Dante caused, I highly doubt he'd be in Smash in any sort of way.

Unless that's the same person who made the previous leak, I'm just gonna go ahead and ignore it. Even if it was the same person, though, I still doubt Dante quite a bit. It makes zero sense for Dante to appear in Smash (especially base game), but that's just me. I know there are people who like the idea, I just kinda doubt it.

To each their own, though. :)
