Half the industry can't talk about what they are working on, and everyone knows it. But Nintendo is on a whole 'nother level.
A third-party character would not be inherently more well-guarded than any other character for that reason.
However, DLC (which started development later obviously) would have fewer people knowing about it at any given stage.
