Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I don't mind paid DLC. It does take dev time and someone has to pay the licensing fees or developer salaries.

Still, it does depend on what it is. A poorly-balanced stupidly OP character as DLC is bad. You're paying for the characters, so they should get the same care and balancing as others. Echoes should be much cheaper since they take less work. Even cheaper should be alt costumes.

I wouldn't mind new trophies added as free updates as the game goes. I'd love to see character/stage/costume DLC though.

The one thing I hate though - the lootbox idea. If I see a cool costume, I have no problem shelling out a bit of cash to get it. Don't make me buy some mystery box for a 'chance' of getting it. That's just consumer unfriendly. I lost interest in Injustice 2 very quickly since I can't easily get certain costume parts.

Expecting 13, 14 or 15 newcomers is discrediting the amount of work that goes into returning veterans. Those are essentially the same amount of work as newcomers, since their properties, 3D models, textures, etc. can't just be copied and pasted from Melee/Brawl.

If you count up the returning vets, you have seven of them (:ultsnake::ultpichu::ultyounglink::ivysaur::squirtle::ultwolf::ulticeclimbers:) in addition to the newcomers (:ultinkling::ultsimon::ultridley::ultkrool: and Isabelle) and echoes (:ultchrom::ultdarksamus::ultdaisy::ultrichter:). Even if we only get one more newcomer and one more echo, as has been hypothesized, that still leaves us with 13 new characters made and five echoes. Smash 4, which had a nearly identical development schedule, had 15 newcomers and two echoes. So it almost lines up.
With the returning cut veterans you skip the whole conceptual stage, have the knowledge of how to model/animate them and create their moves, and have an established base at which to balance them from. Bringing back a pre-Smash 4 veteran takes a lot more work than porting over a Smash 4 veteran, but is still significantly less than a newcomer and certainly not "essentially the same amount of work". Pichu and Young Link are additionally still clones and very little work relatively, when during their initial creation they took =<15% of the work of a unique newcomer, so counting them in a unique newcomer count is very disingenuous.

For one more thing, when comparing Smash 4's development to Ultimate's, you can't ignore that Smash 4 was made on the Wii U and much weaker 3DS simultaneously, as well as having to make the HD jump and limitations on what could be ported over from Brawl, making its content potential significantly less than what Ultimate is capable of in a similar development timeframe. However Ultimate's development does have the big question mark on what exactly Spirits is and how vast a mode it is; if it really is something close to the SSE in scope, that would put a hamper on Ultimate's content potential elsewhere, including characters.

Speak for yourself, I really like Corrin. Their neutral B and pin side B are fun to use both competitively and casually. It's also hilarious when people get caught in the charging chainsaw F Smash.
Huh? I’m talking about Corrin in Fates.

While I think Octolings are extremely unlikely at this point, I won't rule them out just yet.

According to Sakurai, Echoes are first given unique victory animations and poses, then their movesets get adjusted accordingly. Not exactly a complicated procedure. If Sakurai really pushed his team, I could see them working on the Octolings as a last-minute Echo. Again, very unlikely, but at least that would explain why we didn't see them at E3 with the Inklings.

Do you guys think DLC characters will get real CGI trailers this time around? Or will they get shortchanged with in-game only trailers like last time?

Is Kris really that bad?
Yes. I would even consider Corrin a good character compared to that.
There was a post on the FE subreddit that goes very well into why, but I can't find it.
Shame, 'cause New Mystery is a nice game, but like Fates it's dragged down by a **** self-insert.

Her actual character is like baby's first fanfic though.
That's being generous.

Any (or all) of these WarioWare girls. Honestly there aren't many Nintendo characters I want at this point (aside from FE Three Houses characters). It's mostly third party characters.
Just throwing it out here, but Spitz is adorable in their style.

Leon would be pretty great, though there's still other Star Fox characters I'd like to see.

Krystal and Slippy have a ton of potential.
Not to mention that Miyu and Fay can provide convenient Wolf and Fox echoes.

That said, Slippy better be a package deal with his uncle, Grippy is one of the good things Zero brought.

Do we really need more Fox variations though?

I know, didn't see, my bad

But I still think gameplay wise Corrin's a fun unit to use. I hate them, just like Camilla, but I like them as units. Soloing Conquest Lunatic with a stupidly broken Corrin was hilarious.

Honestly. I don't see why they need them?

You can still illicit a reaction with the DLC trailers.

Lucas, Bayonetta, and Cloud in particular, since none of them got leaked.

While in this social context I might come across as a Negative Nancy (or at least a Somber Sammy), allow me to indulge in what could be possible for a moment.

Last Direct in late Oct or first week of Nov, Incineroar looks fun, oh hey it's Ken, new mode and a few other details blow everyone away. It concludes:

Let's recap:
  • 76 playable fighters
  • 103 stages
  • 52 assist trophies
  • 48 Pokemon
  • 83 additional items
  • 820 stage music tracks
  • Home Run Contest and Classic Mode
  • Squad Strike & Smashdown
  • ... and [the exciting new mode]
There has never been a game quite like this. We have worked hard to make sure this Super Smash Bros. game really is "Ultimate."

However, we are going to keep working hard after the game's release on December 7. Before we go, I'd like to share a sneak peak of what's to come.

That's right--more echo fighters will be joining the battle.

[3-pane calendar]

  • Dixie Kong is an echo fighter of Diddy Kong, and will be joining the battle in January.
  • The Octolings are joining as the Inkling's echo fighter in February...
  • And in March, you'll get to play as Sonic's echo fighter, Shadow the Hedgehog.
We're happy to announce that all three of these echo fighters will be provided to subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online as a free bonus.

And now, we have one final announcement. We will also start work on an all-new character, who will mark the 80th fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I hope you look forward to this as you enjoy the game:

Hey Guys What are your favorite Switch Games so Far?
Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, MK8. Next games are going to be Mario Party and Smash. Looking forward to Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon Gen8 next year. I've never played Animal Crossing but might check out the switch one next year too

I think Jeff is psuedo-English? What with riding Tessie and walking past Stonehenge and all.
Honestly that would make a lot of sense I just assumed Winters was a stand in for Canada the same way Eagleland is a stand in for the USA lol. I'm only part way through the game.

If I recall correctly, the first game they had that did that was Advance Wars. Fire Emblem 7 did that too, but you were just kinda in the background, not really all there.

Kris was what really brought it up a notch. I'm hoping in 3 Houses, the customizable protagonist is more of a background character, like you were in Fire Emblem 7. Shadows of Valentia notably dialed back on all of the shipping and waifu stuff. I think IS is hearing old FE fans and are looking for that sweet spot that pleases both old and newcomers.

This is kind of off-topic, but how come Wolf has like, six different VAs in English?
This is usually a thing with Star Fox in general.

You have different games made by different companies with different voices actors, or with Brawl, time constraints.

Wolf so far I think has 4:
Ja Green (643D, and Zero)
Rick May (64)
Jay Ward (Brawl)
Grant Goodeve (Assualt)

Since Fox and Falco are still voiced by their Star Fox 64 3D voice actors, it’s likely Ja Green will return for Smash Ultimate.

This leaker from 4chan leaked a good chunk of characters that will make it into Smash.

New Echoes:
  • Shadow
  • Octolings
  • Dixie
  • Ken
Newcomers:
  • Geno
  • Incineroar
  • Rayman
  • Chorus Kids
  • Skull Kid
  • Stanley (Stanley the Bugman)
Although his list may look fake (especially when Sakurai CLEARLY states that there were FEW characters making it into Smash), the one thing that REALLY caught my eye is that this leaker actually have FOOTAGE for the said revealed characters and that he will release the footage either Tomorrow or Friday.

Right now, the leaker may have doing this to grab attention but stating that he has VIDEO is really a stretch..

Who knows? He may lie or actually spoil the characters in multiple footages.

If I am late at the news...I'm sorry.

I think this is fake, but kudos to the dude who pulled Stanley out of the archives.
Like I don't think Octolings wouldn't exactly be out of the question, just extremely unlikely.
As far as I know, they were psuedo-antagonists for Splatoon 1, so if anything, they would show up in that incarnation.
Regardless of that though, there's various other factors that go against their inclusion.

But yeah, unless there's something of legitimacy that that pops up, let it die.

On the topic of DLC, as long as it's not overpriced and doesn't detract from the base game itself, I think it's relatively fine.
If anything, it should add to the game itself and provide worthwhile content.
That's why I don't have a problem with costumes as it, given it's an optional thing and it's there for the people who want it, and it doesn't impact gameplay in any severe way.

We didn't need more Marth variations, but look who got his chance at Smash.

I'd prefer not to get more characters similar to Fox, but it wouldn't be the worst thing. Even if his specials are similar, Wolf plays nothing like Fox.

I think it's crazy how some people that I know refuse to play Smash if items are on and if it's not an omega stage. Are most people in the Smash community like this?
I like both compeitive and casual smash, allows me to enjoy literally every aspect.

Omega Stages aren't the only stages compeitive people play though to at least clear that up.

I feel like the budget will be larger for DLC this time around so I can definitely see full CG cutscenes with the newcomers. Plus, they're well, all newcomers. And the newcomers in For DLC got special treatment anywho. "I'm looking for a challenge" had Ryu in a specific stance to perfectly match the Super Street Fighter II intro. Cloud got an opening Cinematic pulled right from FFVII. Corrin got a edited Fates cutscene. And Bayonetta got the voice actors from Kid Icarus to reprise their roles for that specific trailer.

So, yeah I could see them getting bigger trailers this time.

Anyway, looks like TGS is starting very soon. Press and industry day though. I don't think we'll get anything Smash related all week, though.
