Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

You know, thinking about it, that gap in the character art kind of looks like where they would put the barcode.

Imagine the havoc that would result from that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They should've left two spots for just Ridley. Look at how he barely fits in his compared to everyone else.

People hoping for a ****load of DLC just proves they care more about their character getting in than the game itself.
Because Smash 4's wasn't free? Your stance has a pretty bad memory.

Just because the previous entry didn't have free DLC doesn't mean we can't hope the next installment will. It's happened with games before.
Your stance seems to have some rough reading skills my guy

Imagine, if you have the energy, a reality in which Thanos has used the reality stone to create this reality so that Marvel superheroes originated from video games and Nintendo owns them. Who are your top Marvel characters for Smash? Mine are:
Thanos
Adam Warlock
Carnage
Thor
Juggernaut
Spiderman
Wolverine
Black Panther
Iron Fist
Deadpool
I love how the music theory picked up some credibility, yet people are still talking about this stupid box. Don't even care if it's real or not at this point. I just feel like we've completely exhausted this conversation.

Oh well. At least I can bring up the music theory without sounding like a lunatic.
Yeah the Music Theory is looking strong, and is my favorite so far.

The Box Theory for me at this point...
She just doesn't seem high Priority to to me... If Shovel Knight didn't make it in, Pretty sure Shantae Didn't... Besides, we know we have a super limited roster space... I just don't see it happening...
Just because Shovel Knight didn't make it in, doesn't mean Shantae's chances of making it in are non-existence, there's no proof of that. Her chances of being playable could very well increase, because of Shovel Knight's AT status. It's all up to Sakurai to decide what becomes of Shantae. But to assume she has no chance because of Shovel Knight getting axed just feels silly to me.

So, only thing I'll say so that this doesn't spawn another five-page box discussion is that the "placeholder" argument needs to stop. It's too detailed, too exact and too close to the game going gold to still be considered a placeholder. You can still disbelieve the theory's conclusion, but dismissing the box itself as a placeholder is disingenuous at best, putting your fingers into your ears and going "I CAN'T HEAR YOU LA LA LA" at worst.

This is placeholder box art.

This is not.

---
EDIT:

Sorry, I had to include one more thing, because your "barely in the planning stages" assertion also sounded wrong.

Mewtwo was announced by Sakurai as the first DLC in October before Smash 4 even released, showing that there had been considerable work done for the character already. Clearly that DLC had been finalized way in advance of that announcement, let alone the full game's release.
I'll keep this short and to the point.

Until we have the special edition box in consumer hands, there is no way to tell for sure if the box is finished or not.

Therefore, your argument is just as valid as any other person's, whether they agree with you or not.

Your observation isn't true until someone with tangible evidence beyond some form of assumption, proves it true.

*This applies to anyone who has an opinion on the box theory (or any theory in general)*.

You can't hope on the fact that Smash is the MGSV equivalent of printing money, and like Zelda, asking for free DLC is pretty optimistic.
Your stance seems to be pretty passively aggressive.

We're talking about characters, not standalone stages that aren't bundled with stages or things like that.

It's kind of ironic that the Smash community is one of the few gaming communities out there that actively push for DLC.
Because Smash is one of the few games out there that genuinely packs the game with so much content no one in their right mind can justifiably argue that content which could have been in the main game was held back for DLC.

I guess Shadow could've been held back as DLC. Echo fighter DLC seems kind of scummy though because they're basically the same as existing characters, unless it's tied to a season pass or online subscription in which case I'd be on board with it. Thanks for the responses.

That's what happens when you don't arcsys it up and deliberately plan the game so that half your content is added later as dlc

people actually view it as a bonus over finishing the game you already bought.

Regardless what I will say about mewtwo is that i'm pretty sure it was still an unplanned "emergency" addtion, I remember a lot of people being pissed about mewtwo, and thats probably why they made the decision, to start working on dlc early to add the character everyone was unhappy about back into the game. I think if mewtwo was baseline Ryu would have still been the first 1st character and would have came out at the time, if a bit earlier.

its still an unfinished design. do you have any proof that the design will literally look like that at release?
You're asking for proof when the picture itself is proof.

There's no "not final artwork" watermark. The design is intricate, with the individual character layers spread slightly further apart from one another than the official standalone box art to accommodate for the controller and adapter at the bottom. It has the ESRB final rating, a list of what comes in the box written in a stylized, evenly justified way, and the final design of the controller. The characters are shown on the side-- which, if this were a placeholder, that side wouldn't even need to be shown at all-- and follow a very specific pattern that would never need to be followed or even created if this were a throwaway mockup without another unseen side. And it already replaced the previous placeholder design of a generic black box with "Smash Bros. Ultimate" on it.

This box took effort, looks final, and the game should be going gold within the next month-to-month and a half, meaning these designs being sent to retailers to replace previous placeholders is incredibly significant. Replacing the artwork again with significant changes less than two months away from shipping them to retailers, while not impossible, is basically unheard of.

Anyway, I'm done arguing this. I'm not asking you to believe the box theory; it's only a hypothesis that could be wrong due to a whole bunch of unknown variables. But the box itself is about as final as it can get.

I was talking to someone earlier and they claimed Sonic got 4 new tracks, I dunno if this was part of the sneak peek in the sound test or what.

These might be just mania/forces tracks, but iirc the only track 4 added for sonic was the original windy hill theme. Something sonic related might come, especially with all the old and new sonic composers joining in.

Could just be nothing, but the lack of sonic info I still find slightly fishy.
Sonic had a bunch of new tracks in the last game, but none of them were new remixes. If the same is true for Ultimate, there's no reason to showcase them on the website.

Wait, thinking about the box. Isn't it possible the the original eight are in the back of the box?
Edit to elaborate a bit:
We don't know if the roster will be the original eight or twelve of the 64 characters, and it seemed an important point in the reveal. Maybe Spirits will focus on those, too, and they get a more prominent spot in the back of the box.

If the box theory is true, what does everyone think happened to Shadow? It seems really strange for him to just vanish from the game in any starring capacity considering he's been an AT since Brawl and is arguably the most popular Sonic character besides the titular hedgehog.
Either was upgraded from Echo to Semi-Unique, made DLC, or unseen Assist.
Maybe sega didn't like him being an echo or a semi clone... So Sakurai Scrapped him at the last second...
But..Shadow's only ever been a semi-clone in Sega's own games, he always shares most of his moves with Sonic except in Sonic Battle.

Smash 4 was released before Splatoon, ARMS, Star Allies, Mario Tennis and SMO.
I mean they've made bank from Smash 4's DLC but they can very easily use Smash to prop up Switch's online system by offering free DLC if you're subscribed.

That's still a type of payment through a paywall to a service to even get it, that's not close to being free at all.

I'm just happy its only $60 for all the content were getting in this game.
I stopped to think about this.

On the soundtrack alone... let’s take an equivalent epic game soundtrack... the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. On itunes it’s 18 dollars and has 78 songs. You’re paying 23 cents a song. Not bad.

And the Chrono Trigger soundtrack has a lot of tracks that are sound effects, but we’re going to give the benefit of the doubt and call them all songs.

The 900 songs on Smash for 60 bucks.... that’s 6 cents a song.

Plus a game comes with that soundtrack.

I don't think enough people look at it like this. Things cost money to develop. If you want more content then they're going to have to charge for it in order to make it worthwhile, especially when you want games to stay at a consistent price like you mention. Someone has to pay Sakurai and his team the hours for making Cloud a character, someone has to pay Square royalties for him being in.

I do think a lot of the negativity comes from the belief of "well why wasn't this in the base game?" but what people have to understand is that almost all of the time stuff like this happens its content that was being developed but just couldn't make it in time for release. Of course this doesn't happen all the time and sometimes companies do hold things back to sell as dlc. See Soulcalibur VI with Tira being a Season pass bonus, according to Verge she was done already but they held back on her.

I'm fine with season passes if the company has shown in the past they can deliver quality DLC and not just cash-grabs.
There are even worse examples of cut content. Capcom was notorious for this. Remember all twelve of Street Fighter X Tekken's DLC characters being playable on-disc? Or Resident Evil 5's Versus Mode DLC being a couple KB because all it was was an unlock code?

That sort of stuff makes gamers distrustful of DLC as a practice. I understand the distrust, and share it myself, but very few people consider the actual cost of these things. I appreciate your post expanding on that. :)

Nah, it'll die.
Be it next month or December 7th.
Be it through confirmation or being debunked.
Speculation about the box will die.
If it does die, can we all take a picture of a box getting destroyed in some fashion?

The waiting for official word is always the toughest.

just because a design is intricate does not mean that its final. designers are almost always fixing and changing stuff right up until it has to be printed (and hell even in printing there will still be last hour changes). and the design is absolutely NOT final. where is isabelle? incineroar? ken? the SE rep? this is clearly not the final design. that will be the one that launches on nov.

The Box theory cares jack **** about placements and whatnot, the one thing that holds it together is the fact Palutena's group only has 8 characters, which means that, unless there's one more Echo in every remaining group(thus being groups of 10 rather than 9), Ken is the last Echo and it means they designed the box with that knowledge which means its general layout won't be changed and they'll only add the remaining characters to their proper spots.

Something I personally disagree with.

For all we know, the box theory is entirely wrong, and people are shutting down almost all discussion about base roster that isn't Ken or Incineroar because of it. This is not conducive to healthy discussion.
One thing about the box theory that I haven't seen being brought up is, it would imply that there's only one announcement for characters left. It doesn't make you wonder about any more of them. And I doubt that Sakurai would want people to know that. He had more or less just said "a few more characters" and not "next time will be the final character announcement", especially given how we still got Isabelle in the interim.

C'mon, I didn't make this for people to use the original version
There was a YouTube poop in the Smash 4 days that synced Squid's I Give Up to the MGS game over theme, I liked how they did that.

Yeah and they delete your characters if your subscription expires.

I'm not seriously saying that would happen, but with the way their cloud service works right now I anticipate some sort of inconvenience.

What if after all this talk about the speculation of the Special Edition Box, in a Direct, Sakurai reveals that it's only purpose was just to contain another game box for Ultimate?

"Hello everyone. Today I am here to unveil the true purpose of the Special Edition box...it hold's another copy of Ultimate! Aren't I just a genius? :troll:"
