Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

The only thing I'd say in regards to Shadow over Tails is that the game needs more villains. If Spirits mode really is what we think it is, then Shadow could work more in favor of giving us antagonists than Tails would.

Also, as far as semi-clones go, Shadow would certainly require less work than Tails. Tails isn't the same size at all and can only reuse the spin dash animation. Almost everything else would need to be reanimated from scratch.
Less work seems to be more of an excuse for echoes though. While Semi-Clones do still require a good amount of work since they're essentially Luigified off the base character.

Shadow perfectly fits an echo role as he'd fit alongside Dark Pit and Dark Samus respectively since Shadow is for all intents and purposes essentially "Dark Sonic". Dark Pit and Dark Samus also have their own weapons/abilities but it's ignored in favor of just including them in anyway possible. Shadow getting in as semi-clone/unique would probably quite honestly piss off most of the fans of current echoes because their character got restricted to echo status but the controversial counterpart to Sonic didn't?

Meanwhile, the character that best fits a "Luigified" Sonic is well... Sonic's Luigi. Which is undoubtedly Tails.

My God.....how long has this theory been around and people still don't get the basic concept?! It lists the box theory as one more newcomer because the box only has one more spot on it's side. Like how are people still missing this?! There are two more characters. Twooooooo! Argh.
You should relax, man.

I imagine most people here are gonna spend their first moments in Ultimate playing with friends. But for those of us with friends in other states who aren't readily available, what''s the first thing you're gonna do in Ultimate?

Personally i'm gonna spend a few short matches getting reacquainted with Smash gameplay, and then i'm gonna do an 8-player Smash with each of the og 8.
As the best one :ultpikachu:of course. After that i'll probably dive headfirst into spirits mode, or however you unlock characters. The sooner I unlock :ultinkling: the better.
The first thing I'm doing is using my Animal Crossing series Isabelle amiibo, then I'm going head-first into unlocking the fighters.

he Isabelle one probably won't be released for a while

The first wave that comes out with the game is Ridley and Wolf

Edit: Oh yeah, you can use non-Smash amiibo

I mean 74 confirmed characters with 103 stages and at the very least a proper classic mode is a ****ing steal when compared to everything else that comes out for the same price these days
Sure and I agree, but I still see some heavy "hail corporate" vibes here with how willing people are to pay for DLC

If DLC is made after development on the base game finishes. I have no problem with it, especially since they managed to add 5 (so far) highly requested characters and have no cuts. I'll gladly buy a season pass for this game, something I've never done before.

I do find it off-putting when people talk about DLC before we even know what we're getting in the base game...

So, only thing I'll say so that this doesn't spawn another five-page box discussion is that the "placeholder" argument needs to stop. It's too detailed, too exact and too close to the game going gold to still be considered a placeholder. You can still disbelieve the theory's conclusion, but dismissing the box itself as a placeholder is disingenuous at best, putting your fingers into your ears and going "I CAN'T HEAR YOU LA LA LA" at worst.

This is placeholder box art.

This is not.
its still an unfinished design. do you have any proof that the design will literally look like that at release?
Your trying to disprove the box theory also makes the assumption DLC hasn't been worked on
mewtwo wasn't even worked on till after 3ds was released. and there's no way that sakurai is going to siphon critical staff and resources away from the base game at an important time to work on dlc.

I'm debating whether I should get the Isabelle amiibo just so I can have her from the very beginning, if you can actually do that with amiibos

The internet is a great place where I can exaggerate how I'm actually feeling by adding "argh" and exclamation points. Please don't try to take that away from me :(

But don't tell me it's not annoying when the 10th person of the day comes here and says that the box theory is wrong because Isabelle isn't on it/there's not enough spots for Ken & Incineroar.

Also anyone who thinks the blog update average means we will get 8 more newcomers...well you could be right but that's setting yourself up for dissapointment because we've already had weeks where less than three characters were shown a week. They could easily just slow down in November to two a week.

It's simply a part of gaming now. The costs of development rise as these things get more and more complex, but nobody's willing to pay more than $60 for a release, even though that's considerably cheaper than games were ten, twenty, thirty years ago due to inflation.

I'm not a fan of blindly throwing money at season passes or the new "games as a service" thing the industry is pushing, but I'm totally willing to pay for additional content post-release if the content is something I like.

It's possible the SE character hasn't even started being working on as well and just planned

Its not because people like DLC, but because they're worried they won't be getting the characters they want.

It has no chance of happening, that's the joke lol. you ok?

I have criticized Capcom's dlc practices before, I'm not going to defend Nintendo if they release the game and have content on the disc that's already there behind a paywall

ROUTE 1: Put Geno in the base roster.
ROUTE 2: Polish things in replacement of putting Geno in the base and putting him as DLC because they know people will pay top dollar for him.

Right, but considering we don't have any clue how DLC will be handled, why can't we hope to see additional content for free. Like how Overwatch handles new characters. It'd be an incentive to buy the base product knowing the game will be supported with free additions in the future.

Edit: Lots of replies to my previous post that I can't possibly respond to, so just know this is my stance

People just like talking about DLC because they want to get as much of their favorites as they can.

That said, I don't really want to worry about that too much until the game comes out.

yeah no. maybe sakurai has sat down and written plans for dlc but that's all they likely are: plans. right now the dev team is probably hyper-focused on getting the game out on Dec 7th (as they should be. polishing and QA will probably take months)

This is not.
You know, thinking about it, that gap in the character art kind of looks like where they would put the barcode.

Imagine the havoc that would result from that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Do the Wii U GameCube controller adapters work with ultimate? I can't find a clear answer.
They do, and they work with any Switch game provided you don't need -, ZL, motion controls, or clicking the sticks.

Only reason some people are doing this is because they feel certain they know the final roster due to box theory. If that wasn't a thing you'd still see people speculating that X character might be base.

It's simply a part of gaming now. The costs of development rise as these things get more and more complex, but nobody's willing to pay more than $60 for a release, even though that's considerably cheaper than games were ten, twenty, thirty years ago due to inflation.

I don't think enough people look at it like this. Things cost money to develop. If you want more content then they're going to have to charge for it in order to make it worthwhile, especially when you want games to stay at a consistent price like you mention. Someone has to pay Sakurai and his team the hours for making Cloud a character, someone has to pay Square royalties for him being in.

I do think a lot of the negativity comes from the belief of "well why wasn't this in the base game?" but what people have to understand is that almost all of the time stuff like this happens its content that was being developed but just couldn't make it in time for release. Of course this doesn't happen all the time and sometimes companies do hold things back to sell as dlc. See Soulcalibur VI with Tira being a Season pass bonus, according to Verge she was done already but they held back on her.

I'm fine with season passes if the company has shown in the past they can deliver quality DLC and not just cash-grabs.

The Western side of Pop Star.
It's kind of ironic that the Smash community is one of the few gaming communities out there that actively push for DLC.
I mean, it is set to be a good game from a good series that has a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" structure. The DLC in 4 was generally more substantial than some games in their entire life cycles, so imagine how it would be here.

Hmmm, when I was wondering about trophies a few hundred pages back, I forgot to mention the alt trophies too (actual alt trophies/FS trophies). I still want to see some honestly.

I think it's very likely that would just go on the back or bottom of box.

No need to cause panic lol.

Something I personally disagree with.

For all we know, the box theory is entirely wrong, and people are shutting down almost all discussion about base roster that isn't Ken or Incineroar because of it. This is not conducive to healthy discussion.
