Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Actually, here's a fun game sense a lot of you seem to like Banjo, please try and sell me on the character. You are not allowed to call him an icon or say he "deserves" it. You also cannot mention how big an impact his reveal would have of Twitter. That's irrelevant. I want the important stuff. What would his gameplay be like? How would play? Make me care. Go.
That's not the important stuff. The important stuff is the video games they are from. Thats why people want them. They were great games back then, and banjo has been as dead as mega man or k rool, so people want him back

Moveset and how he would play are always irrelevant. Fox, wii yoga trainers, captain falcon are all in the game. People like them just fine

Rex and Pyra are whatever to me. Xenoblade could use more representation in Smash but I'm really not crazy about the character designs in 2..
Eh to all of them.
2. I don’t like Rex and Pyra.

Better them than Elma, but I'm not a fan of Xenoblade 2's art style still.
What the--? Where did all the positive support for XB2 go? Its so weird how characters like Rex and Decidueye (bias since they're in my sig, I know) are popular requests one season, and by the next months they're in the trash...

Anyway, its funny that a lot of the posts I read say that the art style in XB2 wasn't to their liking, because I felt that exact same way with XB1 (just so we're clear going forward, I personally never call these games Xenoblade CHRONICLES since I think that extra naming was just tacked on, so I call each game Xenomblade (XB), Xenoblade X (XBX) and Xenoblade 2 (XB2))

Anyway, I know this will get me hate, but I could not get into XB1 because I didn't like the visuals of the characters, especially Shulk. He looked terrible, his render never looked right to me, and there was always something about his face. It also didn't help that just as a character, I didn't like him. I had the same problem with Tidus from FFX. All the other FFX characters I liked visually, but Tidus looked ridiculous to me, and I never liked his voice or personality. I tired months ago to replay FFX and just stopped (again), so I've yet to finish XB or FFX.

The issues I had with the character visuals didn't bother me in XBX, and I honestly have to say the art direction in XB2 is my favorite, and I hope the rest of the games moving forward continue 2's trend.

Having typed all this, am I just the weird one? I liked the sequel over the God-Almighty first XB, I'm championing characters I want for SSBU that have apparently gone out of style (exception being Dixie Kong)...of course like what you like, I just found this interesting enough to ramble about.

Why?

People can like a character for their own reasons, why should they care about appealing to you? We just love the characters and series and want them in Smash, especially since they were once Nintendo characters. It's not that deep.
Of course people can like characters for their own reasons. I'd like to know why people like Banjo. Most of the time people just say he's an icon and that crap doesn't matter in terms of gameplay.

He's a bear with a bird inside a backpack he's wearing
He could throw in some punches and uh.. he could do a flip as his recovery
'nuff said
Sounds boring.

It's a cartoon bear with a smartass bird in his backpack.

Do... Do I need to say more than that, orrrr...?
So...bird Deadpool? I'm listening...

I wasn't around pre-E3, so can safety say I've never been a fan of XB2's art. Gameplay is another thing. I don't own it, so I can't judge there.

I can't call them an icon, but I can say that the duo were the lead protagonists of two of the best games on Nintendo 64. They were born as Nintendo protags, and their games are some of the most beloved on N64, with many believing them to rival SM64 and beat DK64.

They'd have a playstyle based around their numerous in-game abilities. Banjo grabbing with his backpack and Kazooie doing pummels inside, Kazooie having a variety of different egg projectiles to use with neutral special, ranging from long-range eggs to explosive eggs and mecha-koopa type eggs. They have multiple forms of recovery to utilize. Kazooie can attack in the air with her beak like Duck Hunt, she can run Banjo around at higher speeds with him on her back etc. The characters are among the few where nearly their whole moveset could be canon.

They're also a charming duo with a lot of personality and contrast. They're from an era where Rareware meant something and dished out great games. They were designed by the guy who designed Diddy, K Rool and Dixie. They are basically Duck Hunt done better. In fact, many believe Duck Hunts playstyle to be an apology for the lack of BK.

You know what's funny? 5-6 unique newcomers was my original guess after the big E3 blowout. Perhaps that's why I'm so inclined to give this box theory a chance. This game isn't like previous development cycles - I don't see why so many people are struggling to understand that returning veterans have to be rebuilt from the ground up. Even if the box theory isn't true, don't be surprised if we still only have 2 or 3 unique newcomers left after this.

That said, there's still a lot to cover in the next direct. There's still the potential return of other game modes (Home Run Contest, Multi Man Smash, Master/Crazy Orders). Not to mention the new online mode, which I expect them to improve to some capacity as they seem to be taking feedback from the general competitive community this time around. And I expect that new Spirits mode to be something to blow us all away with - Sm4sh's biggest weakness was its single player and I fully expect them to use this chance to fix that.

I know some of these are already confirmed as not possible, but I would love to see:

- Mega Man X
- Zero
- Paper Mario
- Toad
- Banjo / Kazooie

Few extra nice to haves:

- Crono
- Dixie Kong
- Rayman

Regarding the AC music track, I believe the update for the Pikmin Music was pulled from this upcoming week, implying a music track was pushed back, aka an AC track due to the direct delay.

It's a silly theory honestly, but just looking at uniques it isn't wrong yet.
If Nintendo actually pushed back an AC remix so it would tie in with Isabelle's reveal week, then that pretty much confirms that the music theory is correct. Why bother withholding the remix at all if it didn't mean anything?

I'm not going to put the cart before the horse since nothing is official yet, but if AC really does get a remix, I'd recommend placing your bets on Pokemon getting a newcomer. It makes too much sense for us to get a Gen VII Pokemon with a Su/Mo remix.

Because we love his games and want that Rare charm and style present in Smash. Banjo-Kazooie was a big fixture of my childhood as I'm sure it was for many others here, and having the main characters from that game, after being shipped off to Microsoft, in Nintendo's biggest all-star crossover game, would be nothing short of mindblowing.

I don't care if you don't like him. This is why I like him and why I want him. Let the developers make his moveset fun and engaging (which it almost certainly will be, considering that the whole deal with the games is Banjo and Kazooie learning to do moves in tandem with each other).

I honestly don't think Ridley looks all that scary. His Nair seems to be the most threatening move in his kit, as far as I can tell.

His move that deals the absurd amount of damage is practically impossible to land outside of a shield break. His command grab is escapable. His Up-Special seems bad. His only special that has a ton of potential is his neutral fire balls but they take so much time to charge that even they seem underwhelming. Recovering onto the ledge against it as a character with bad recovery sounds obnoxious but otherwise Ridley's specials are meh.

His fair has potential for sure. Nair is solid. Down-air looks terrible but I gotta see the endlag before making a final opinion. I can't remember what his backair is at all. His upair is a mystery to me too come to think of it.

His Smashes are fine for what they are. His jab is fine. His tilts don't seem like much to write home about either.

Most of his gameplan seems to revolve around staying at a distance and mixing up between spaced fairs, tilts, and occasionally grabs if the opponent gets too comfortable shielding.

On top of the lackluster attacks all around he has the typical big body issue all heavies have.

I dunno K. Rool looks pretty ok so far. His Crown doesn't seem like a good projectile but it doesn't necessarily need to be. Just him having a fast poking tool would be something for him. I can't remember how fast the threw it and was able to move afterward off the top of my head but I recall K. Rool was not slow.

hey i gotta question for you guys: what was the most hype trailer thus far?
in my opinion it was k.rool by far. i was bouncing around my room so much my piggy bank fell on the floor and broke lol.
I think k rools trailer was better, but Ridley was more hype I guess. Since it was the first one. And we all knew k rool was coming after the Ridley reveal anyway

@ brawl and 4 ending on olimar and shulk respectively, they had E3 as their major character reveals, and addtional bonus characters as secrets for players to discover, plus, they lasted like 2 years of hype periods each. Smash Ultimate is in a hyperbolic time chamber compared to brawl and 4 and if they can't handle the speed then they should have paced the reveals better.

Feels to me like Nintendo are panicking after lets go failed to get much respect from people and they quickly threw out krool to shut people up without thinking in the long term.

This is what I'm talking about. Is it just like, Banjo punches, Kazooie pecks, or is there something more here? Not that the former option wouldn't be interesting if done right, but what kind of combo moves are we talking?

He's just another Mario. If we get another Mario character, it should be someone unique like Wart or Toad
No chief. No this ain't it.
There are numerous moves of Mario's that Paper Mario is incapable of using.
If done correctly, and most accurately, he would not share a single move of Mario's.

He'd be even more unique than ZSS, who is another identity of Samus.
I don't think having Mario in his name should stop him.

...also Wart? Really? Why not Petey?

Isabelle. while I am very much looking forward to Inkling and Simon, we all kinda saw them coming. And I never got the hype for Ridley and K. Rool as smash Characters. Isabelle was the one that surprised me the most.

Easily K. Rool with Ridley being a very close 2nd. I even know how Sakurai likes to joke around but he still got me with that Dedede fake-out.

I mean...I guess? But there's so many better picks for retro throwbacks imo.
Wart wasn't the point of my post though please consider accepting Paper Mario into your soul.

Oh...I guess that would count!
Yeah, that would be the most hype, not K. Rool for me.
When Snake appeared? I literally almost cried at one point.
Nothing will match that for me. Except if PM's in. But even then.

First off set that box on fire because this idea is stupid, there are surely more characters than that and they need to show them! They should have shown more than just that one character at the Direct.. There needs to be a mini Smash Direct later this month to show more!
