Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Yup, sounds about right...
Don't get me wrong, I love Bayonetta in her entirety, but it's just that her playstyle isn't very fun, regardless of how strong it is.

Smash Bros? What's a Smash Bros? This is Poke-Boards!

Anyway i'm done discussing Let's Go right now, we've been going off-topic for too long. I think it looks disappointing but i'm willing to give a try, hopefully
Gen 8 lives up to the hype.

So uh...
Which Newcomers that we know of are you most excited for?
For me, it's Inkling :ultinkling:.

I adore Splatoon! It's only existed for three years and it's right up there with Mario for me. Even though it was predictable i'm so glad Inkling is in Smash!
I hope Woomy is a taunt...
Honestly, most of the echo fighters.
I mean you got a xenomorphic suit of armor, one of the best princesses, Luci's father, and a charismatic Belmont.
Like what's not to love?
But for a unique newcomer, I'm actually excited that the big boy, :ultridley:, is finally here. He's one of the only few characters that I'm actually going to try to lock down an amiibo of. Not to mention how satisfying that the Inklings are looking to play.

okay guys what if the last unique newcomers were
-Geno
-Isaac
-Incineroar
-Rhythm Heaven Character

would you be happy with the roster
Actually, yeah.
Finally getting an RH character after being teased by Gematsu and seeing the datamine, would be like a huge weight off my shoulders.
Isaac would be dope if Sakurai could differentiate his moveset by quite a bit compared to other swordsmen, and would allow a relatively obscure franchise, like RH, to finally get recognition.
Same goes for Geno, and with him out of the way puts the bulk of Brawl wish lists to rest.
Incineroar, while I wouldn't be excited with his inclusion, I certainly wouldn't mind it. Even if his moveset is bland, we already received so many other unique and requested characters I couldn't be mad at his inclusion.

Yup, sounds about right...
I just suck as Bayonetta.

Like, I could never actually play as her well. So, I only bring her out with my buddies, and most of the time I lose with her.

I’m just trying to say why keeping Sonic’s Up-B wouldn’t necessarily be out of character for Shadow.
But it would be weird to see as a recovery specifically, Springs are just stage objects meant to give you a sudden boost in any direction. Sonic has no means of gaining extra height by himself so the Classic Spring makes sense for him since, after all, Sonic in Smash is based on his Classic iteration.

Meanwhile, Tails can fly, Knuckles can glide, Amy spins like a helicopter and Shadow warps. Slapping Mewtwo's teleport on him probably wouldn't be too hard.

Aight maybe I should've just quoted the first paragraph. Unless we're talking about other 4chan screenshots
That was kind of a different point. Though honestly, I think a lot of the renders done are pretty damn good work. Leaks or not, the artists worked hard to make some fairly believable looking ones. Some aren't all that great, but some are still pretty cool.

I'd love to see some of those as models used in various Smash game Mods.

Have we talked about this?
Kirby Series director posts a picture of Majora’s Mask with the hashtag “omen”

Y’all think it’s anything?

Here's a new silly idea of a character thread:

Try spelling your username with the first letter of potential newcomers, like the following:

Felix
Isaac
Neku Sakuraba
Agnès Oblige
Lin Lee Koo

Sylux
Malos
Amaterasu
Shantae
Henry Cooldown

Geno
Anthony Higgs
Mike Jones
Elma
Rex

It's one in the morning, i'm tired, and i'm clearly using this roster maker for good.

And by good I mean McDonalds alignment charts.

I couldn't figure out what tier the Miis, R.O.B., and G&W were on. They are true neutral.

I mean I've been fooled by more than a couple of the fake leaks, at least impressed. (The banjo one comes to mind, one of the Lloyds) but the Agnes leak ones were pretty notoriously bad, and I agree with that sentiment.

That is so not a Ryu move! He'd try to be a responsible parent, not an asshole!

Oh, that is true. I just rather not generalize all leaks. Some are good, some are bad. Etc.

In other news, this upcoming weekend, smash Bros demos will be at select Best buys!

...

Sigh. It used to be in Canada too. So sad.
I can't even get to a Best Buy. :/ Oy.

This is how I feel about the characters, and I've organized in two ways. The tiers represent my relative enthusiasm for the experience of playing the movesets with higher tiers being higher levels of enthusiasm. However, I'm competitive, and I'm only going to take really seriously a character who happens to both be generally high tier and the best at offering whatever unique advantages they offer. I'm going to seriously explore the whole cast of course, but the order within tiers reflects my view on the probability each character will offer that and be "worth it". For instance, while I would be very enthusiastic to play as a top tier Mr. Game & Watch, I perceive it as an event pretty unlikely to occur. On the other hand, while I have somewhat below average interest in maining Sheik, I think it's very likely that Sheik will be a character worth maining. Clones and echoes with known inferior attributes get very low rankings, incidentally, because even if the archetype is good the inferior one of any pair will be most likely useless in effects; this is why I rank Roy so lowly. His differences with Chrom simultaneously make me way less interested in playing Roy and also make it extremely hard for me to imagine Roy being worthwhile at all even if the Chrom/Roy moveset is top tier since Chrom likely is just a strict outclass.

Obviously there's basically nothing about a lot of these characters we know so I just relied on intuition and guesswork which will not substitute even a little for the process of actually playing on December 7, but it was a fun exercise at least.

Heck they could use the exact animation Sonic has with the Spring but instead Shadow boosts upwards with Chaos power.

This is a favorite tier list of mine: What illegal fight maneuver the Smash cast would do.

Agnès was one of my Smash Ballot votes back then. And, although recency bias from back then is long gone, I still believe she or any of her party members would be an interesting addition to the roster based on potential moveset alone. Not to mention the kickass soundtrack they can bring along with them. I don't have high hopes for them but I'd be very surprised if they did make it in, even as Assist Trophies.

I'm really excited for this month's Direct as...well.. At this point, with how it's been, anyone can make it in unless otherwise specified. And that's why I feel much more intense anticipation for this game than I did for Smash 4's reveals.

For all we know, we could have Rayman, Banjo Kazooie, Master Chief, and the likes... No matter how much we try not to believe it, it's still a possibility.
...-sigh- September Direct when. Satiate my thirst for more Smash Ultimate info, Nintendo...!

Speaking of Ballots. Who was everyone's Smash Ballot back in 2015?

Mine was King K. Rool though that should be obvious from my avatar and eventual Ultimate main. :p

I think the thing I'm most interested in the next general Nintendo Direct will be to see how/if Echo fighters are revealed.

Smash isn't the focus on the next Direct, so unless they're doing the Gen7 reveal to promote Let's Go, and a curveball at the end, my question is:

"When" would be the good time to talk about Echoes?

So, something I wanted to point out.

Smash 64 had 12 characters.

Melee had 14 newcomers with 0 cuts, obviously.

Brawl had 18 newcomers and 5 cuts. Most of which were clones and the last being the controversial Mewtwo. However, Toon Link can be considered as the replacement for Young Link. Food for thought.

Smash For had 15 base newcomers, 17 if you count all 3 Mii's, or 15 again if you don't include Dark Pit and Lucina. and 6 base cuts. Lucas was brought back through DLC alongside 4 more newcomers bringing that total to 21. And the return of Mewtwo and Roy, which wont be included here.

So, what am I trying to say here? Well, we're all expecting around 3ish more newcomers right? Well, what of we're low balling it? Like, take the echoes, we've gotten Richter, Daisy, Chrom, and Dark Samus. Those all probably took the work of 1 character, let's just say that for reference purposes for now. And we've gotten Inkling, Ridley, K. Rool, and Simon, 4. So, those 4 plus the echoes makes 5. Retroactively speaking the minimum amount of newcomers we have gotten in a Smash game is 12 characters. That's the OG 12. Ok, but let's say that don't count. 14 newcomers is the minimum, but let's limit that down to just unique characters. That means we got 9 as our minimum. HOWEVER, let's take in the fact that many of the newer characters had to just be simply ported over with a few frame tweaks. That means that the entirety of the Smash 4 newcomers and DLC took less work than the rest of the cast. 28 characters didnt take much work at all. Wolf, Snake, Ice Climbers, Ivysaur, Squirtle, Pichu, and Young Link were the cut veterans that return this game so they probably took quite a bit. So 8 characters subtracted from that 28, then 5 more characters subtracted for the current newcomers and echoes added in this game. So, that comes out to 15. Ok but let's say licensing was kind of difficult let's make that number 13. 13 characters... BUT HANG ON! Let's say that the new quality of life changes count towards bringing that total character count down. Let's say to 10. I think 10 is the number. Perfectly sitting between the og's 12 and Melee's unique 8. I think we're getting 6 more newcomers. I think echoes CAN be included in that as well so if there's like 8 more echoes then say 4 more characters and etc.

SO, after all that ****. We have 6 potential characters. Who are they? Well...

Inceneroar or Another Gen 7 - Kind of obvious. Leaks leaks leaks. Blah blah blah.

Skull Kid - Long Overdue Zelda Newcomer. Pretty popular. Leaks leaks leaks. Blah blah blah.

Isaac - Most popular character after K. Rool. Possibly tied with Geno. Leaks lea- you get the idea

Geno - Most popular character after(?) Isaac. Possibly tied with Isaac. Leaks.

WHO ARE THE OTHER TWO? Or one if you count the echoes as a 5th newcomer.

I dunno, Ryu says talk is cheap in one of his victory animations.
I feel like he'd get sick of it.
Like legit I don't think the man is clever enough to pull that move either.

But besides that he is an honorable fighter without an inch of cheapness in his body. Ken and Evil Ryu on the other hand.......

Ken, Shadow and Isabelle would make 3 Echoes, so there's that, though I can't think of a 4th Echo I'm dying for outside of Dixie right now.

If Microsoft is getting Minecraft stuff, I'd say Banjo, with the Echoes taking the last slot.
