Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

things, but the single main reason that game was bad was pretty obviously that the supers only for KOs mechanic was fundamentally flawed and that was their decision and literally everything in the game revolved around that.
It seems you are also throwing shade at the best fighting game known to mankind

Just a regular reminder for some people about definitions.

When there's supposed information without substantial evidence backing it up, it's called a RUMOR.

Leaks are information that wasn't suppose to come out until the official time and matches with the information that gets confirmed.

I mean let's not feel too sorry for PSABR. Sure that game clearly got screwed on getting good character licenses and various tuning things, but the single main reason that game was bad was pretty obviously that the supers only for KOs mechanic was fundamentally flawed and that was their decision and literally everything in the game revolved around that. When you make the centerpiece of a game's design a fundamentally bad idea, in the end no matter how much good or bad work you do, nothing really matters because you're building on a poor base and have no hope of salvaging the situation. Likewise you can afford to make a lot of mistakes and will still get a pretty good game as long as your core concepts are sound; look at how ultimately haphazardly so many of the details in Melee and Brawl were handled but both turned out to be solid games because the underlying mechanical concepts that govern Smash are excellent so even if things like character balance are all over the place things will still just manage to work out in the end.
It wasn't really bad though. There was a ton of depth in the gameplay and the competitive scene, while small, was still developing all the time. Once you learned the ins and outs of the combat system, it was a very tactical game. It was relatively balanced, and most characters could hold their own and play around the super system.

Then Kat released who was basically Bayonetta but times a million and everybody got sick of playing her.

I don’t even care who’s announced, I just want a direct so we can have something to talk about. Plus, the newly announced characters can provide more evidence for certain leaks and narrow down who else is still likely from the Boring 5/6
It's only been about a month though. We've been getting consistent reveals, so if there's nothing by the end of September then we'll probably get a big blowout in October.

What is a Freddy Fazbear?
A shameless rip-off of Chuck-e-Cheese’s.
So shameless that, due to the colossal quantity of Cheese’s loyalists that wait outside the store and guilt trip anyone who dares enter, nobody goes there during its operational hours, but apparently everyone loves it in the after hours, since it’s like a Halloween haunted house but all year, or something. I don’t know why they don’t just market it as such, they’d make way better profits. Maybe they could make a series of video games about it or something, too.

Well, it's a long story.

From what we in the community know, Superbot (the developer) was given a shoestring budget and very little help from Sony in securing licenses for third party characters. As a result, they were largely at the complete mercy of rights holders. This is horribly evident in Raiden and DmC Dante, who were pretty much demanded.

Heihachi, Big Daddy, and Isaac Clarke were the only third parties who worked with Superbot to make their characters feel great. Namco wrote all of Heihachi's dialogue, 2K lent them Ken Lavine for story and direction, and EA sent over tons of material to make Isaac as accurate as possible while letting them use pretty much whatever they wanted from it.

Konami wanted Raiden because maketing, and he wasn't allowed to use any of his weapons because spoilers. Same for Dante. We have confirmation that Lara Croft was pitched but SE wanted TR to come out before Lara was playable in anything else. Abe from Oddworld was DLC, paired with Dart, but after Isaac and Zeus (from God of War... yes...) didn't sell, plans were cancelled. We only know this from concept art and Oddworld developers accidentally letting it slip in a tweet.

We know there was a Final Fantasy item in the game that got removed thanks to leaked pre-release screenshots of the debug menu item list.

Now this next part is all potentially my memory going fuzzy, but I'll throw it out just in case. IIRC, a leaker showed up and bought some credibility by showing some concept art that was later released. They ranted about how licensing was an utter mess and they legitimately tried to make everyone happy but the money and the support wasn't there. Activision didn't want Spyro to seem "better" on any one platform because Skylanders and had no plans for Crash so they weren't able to secure them. (This is somewhat supported by an unverified Activision intern who did an interview, but they claimed it was more about money.) FF13 was "big" at the time so SE basically told them Lightning or STFU. Ryu Hayabusa was supposed to be her rival. Those two would have added development time, and they tried to push them back as DLC. Tecmo didn't want Ryu to be DLC, so thanks to the Rival system, they were both cut. We don't know the veracity of this because there hasn't been much pre-release info datamined save some screenshots, one video, and concept art. Many others were difficult to obtain because nobody "wanted their characters to be shot in the face with real guns and stabbed by serial killers." They also said that basically the only time Sony stepped in was to tell them they couldn't do something. They also said that Vita crossplay hobbled the entire game. Imagine the 3DS development drain, but now they had to be 100% cross-compatible.

These next rumors are unsourced but I've seen them passed around and they're sad enough to be believable.
They also claimed they tried to reach real hard for just about anything, IIRC Krome (of Ty the Tasmanian Tiger) were really excited about the project. Croc was also supposedly sought. Both fell through, allegedly because Sony stepped in to say "No." These are probably hearsay but I'd buy it.

Really, the entire game was a perfect storm of poor timing, no support, and awful logistical choices. I fully believe if the Vita was buried, Crash and Spyro remasters were coming, FF13 was forgotten, and Lara's game was out, we'd have had a very very different roster.
I would believe this, But I have a few outstanding questions.

I remember shortly after release, some employee admitted they rushed and deliberately made Sir Daniel Fortesque trash tier because they didn't really want to add him despite his demand, if this is really the case then imo it makes the superbot really did try narrative a bit garbage. Also, was a resistance character ever planned? Seems to be there looked to be a lot of evidence for a resistance character, but nothing was ever mentioned again about it.

Anyway in case i get roasted for off topic. This still makes me appreciate cloud more, and I don't think any online direct will have much in the way of new games but rather talking about games that are already announced or out. I expect to see a character trailer and online finally detailed however.

Only about another 132 pgs left until we reach 4000. We may very well reach it before the next direct. Then afterwards, another 200 will immediately be adde.d

If we do get a Direct this week, I'm banking on Incineroar and Isabelle. Though Incineroar might wait for November for that sweet Pokémon marketing synergy.

Every single royal sibling did. And, off topic, it was a terrible choice for the specific reason of not having a lance user who wasn't also allergic to arrows unless you bought DLC. Why were Oboro AND Azura DLC, but we got Hinoka, Cordelia and Caeda in the base game? And why was Niles part of that pack? Niles??

Despite my enjoyment actually playing the game, thinking about it makes me want to throttle someone at Koei Tecmo.
The handling of Fates in particular (and Shadow Dragon by extension) was the game's biggest issue. Out of the three main represented games (basically not including Rowan/Lianna/Anna/Celica/Lyn), there were eighteen characters...and instead of making the ratio 6:6:6, they made it 3:6:9. And the justification given, that they felt it'd be a disservice to not include every single Fates Royal, felt really forced. Awakening turned out fine since it hit the expected six right on the mark, but why should Fates get nine characters at base (without Azura, even) when Shadow Dragon can't even get a large percent of its principal cast? Folks like Merric, Ogma, Jagen, and Hardin were robbed, though Minerva at least got in through DLC. Even Nyna would have been really cool to see.

There's a lot to love about FE Warriors, but my god, Shadow Dragon got absolutely robbed by Fates.

Everyone's obvious if you revise your history hard enough.
When Smash 4 started development, everyone knew a Gen 6 Pokemon would get in, and X and Y dropped, Greninja was the obvious choice.

He clearly didn't see the "You must be this tall to work at this Pizzeria" sign.

Or commit enough tax fraud.

:ultbayonetta: was in the popular game 'Witch Rally' for the GBA back in 97'

The giveaway should be Neighbor from Hello Neighbor in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe lmao

A miserable little pile of memes! But enough talk - have at you!
Or the 50 other things that are obvious. My point was that this leak and the Smashboards leak open up identically. Which makes the Smashboards leak EVEN LESS credible.

In hindsight, I don’t think anyone believed otherwise anyways. Meh.

Freddy would make a good Nintendogs style Assist Trophy.

FFIV isn't really that good, it did some things right but oh god did it do so many wrong and it did not age well. Level progression was fixed but it's incredibly grindy; game feels very unpolished and glitchy in how some skills work, and the localization didn't do it any favors; party is inconsistent and constantly changes like a hot potato; story gets off the rails the moment the underground is introduced and then aliens and moon conspiracy theories make it start literally flying but it's not like it was ever good when most of it feels like the first draft of a generic fantasy story with too much contrivances that range from hyperbolic time chambers, random *** Diabolus Ex Machinas, deaths meaning nothing, the real villain being introduced at the final dungeon, the ****ing moon is actually an alien spaceship, there aren't just 4 crystals, there are also 8, no wait there are 16, and a traitor subplot that doesn't just get used three times, but two of those are with the SAME CHARACTER and all of those it ends up being that they're being mind controlled goddamnit Kain not again **** you.
Everything you said there was awesome while playing it.

But yes, it is grindy compared to, say, FF6. In that you will probably need to do more than none.

Seeing as you can't get Gen 7 Pokémon in Let's Go I actually think they'll want to reveal the Pokémon newcomer before it comes out, they'll squeeze the last bit out of Gen 7 that way before completely shifting their focus.

I'm definitely betting on a Pokémon aswell, but I think its trailer will just end the Direct, and so we won't get more than that.

Bayonetta also starred in the popular Afterburner x Space Harrier crossover on the NES in the 50's.

She took everyone to the Fantasy Zone that day.

Hey just came to see how things are going

Do we have any word from the administer about the French leak?
Nothing yet...they apparently can’t retrieve deleted posts last time I checked
So far we have not managed to confirm it definitely but i'm leaning toward no/fake.
Uh, guys, we did get confirmation. The admin told us that the original post was just a bunch of random letters/symbols, so presumably the person just went back and used Inspect Element to edit the text.

It's a fake after all! One of the better text leaks though, it was a co-ordinated effort, multiple people were in on it.
