Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

The handling of Fates in particular (and Shadow Dragon by extension) was the game's biggest issue. Out of the three main represented games (basically not including Rowan/Lianna/Anna/Celica/Lyn), there were eighteen characters...and instead of making the ratio 6:6:6, they made it 3:6:9. And the justification given, that they felt it'd be a disservice to not include every single Fates Royal, felt really forced. Awakening turned out fine since it hit the expected six right on the mark, but why should Fates get nine characters at base (without Azura, even) when Shadow Dragon can't even get a large percent of its principal cast? Folks like Merric, Ogma, Jagen, and Hardin were robbed, though Minerva at least got in through DLC. Even Nyna would have been really cool to see.

There's a lot to love about FE Warriors, but my god, Shadow Dragon got absolutely robbed by Fates.
I'm simply hoping the game gets further DLC support in similar fashion to what Hyrule Warriors received-- though I'd really rather not have to buy another version and play through it all again. Include a variety of characters from Eliwood/Roy's games and Ike's games, plus Three Houses. I really think they could sell a second season pass shortly before or after the Three Houses release. The year-and-a-half gap between the Hyrule Warriors release and its large DLC additions sets precedent.

And if that DLC happens: no more Fates.

I would believe this, But I have a few outstanding questions.

I remember shortly after release, some employee admitted they rushed and deliberately made Sir Daniel Fortesque trash tier because they didn't really want to add him despite his demand, if this is really the case then imo it makes the superbot really did try narrative a bit garbage. Also, was a resistance character ever planned? Seems to be there looked to be a lot of evidence for a resistance character, but nothing was ever mentioned again about it.

Anyway in case i get roasted for off topic. This still makes me appreciate cloud more, and I don't think any online direct will have much in the way of new games but rather talking about games that are already announced or out. I expect to see a character trailer and online finally detailed however.
I have no idea where that rumor came from and I've never heard it. As a Sir Dan main, it didn't seem like he was intentionally bad. In fact, he had really great tools. It was just that he was balanced to take advantage of people who didn't know how to deal with his awkward, slow swings and weird disjoints. If anything, they probably ran out of time to tweak his moveset because his reveal shows properties he didn't have in the final game. To top it off, he wasn't anywhere near the worst in the game. He was low tier for sure, but Radec and Spike ate enough garbage to make sure there wasn't any left over for Dan.

I'm not saying that didn't happen, but I very highly doubt that's the case. I followed everything closely and I can't remember any statement to that effect.

Regarding the Resistance character: There was a Chimera soldier on the concept roster but we don't have any evidence that it got past planning. A Chimera was on pretty much all the concept artwork even back to the "PlayStation Title Fight" poster pitch but once the game started taking shape there wasn't any sign of them. We don't know why one never made it but some say it was likely because there were too many characters with firearms and Resistance was best represented with an item and stage.

That's about the last I'll say. I can answer stuff in PM for the curious but this is eating up a lot of thread space for something only tangentally related to Smash at this point in the conversation and I'd rather not do that.

Don't worry, it'll be next week, along with the reveal of someone who people say is unlikely because reasons.
My favorite part of Smash speculation is when Sakurai utterly destroys common "facts" and people all suddenly go "yeah we knew X would be in all along makes total sense."

Never fails.

Dude, we were talking about how P1ZZ4CHU P1ZZ4CHU got a work at a pizzeria! He's too little and small!

Uh, guys, we did get confirmation. The admin told us that the original post was just a bunch of random letters/symbols, so presumably the person just went back and used Inspect Element to edit the text.

It's a fake after all! One of the better text leaks though, it was a co-ordinated effort, multiple people were in on it.
Oof

...wait a minute. Random letters/symbols? It could have been something encrypted. I know the ProtonMail leak did something similar

Should we believe this guy, at all?
Generally his Rumor Wave videos are 80-90% right, which is why I'm putting stock that there'll be a direct on Thursday.
A little bit of insider info, him and alongside his clique already knew about the New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe port coming soon months before hand before people Liam Robertson talked about it and Google making a console, I've listened to his podcast and they have some actual reliable sources.

John apparently also knows something that Nintendo has up their sleeve for a surprise or two to push that 20M Switches in Fiscal 2018 goal, so I wouldn't sleep on him.

Heeeeey Jibanyaaaaan!! Great to see you back.

But to be honest, most if not everyone will just choose Heihachi as the obvious choice. He's the protagonist, right?
Heihachi is more or less the main villain, but he is iconic as he been around since the first Tekken unlike Jin who debuted in Tekken 3.

Most of Tekken revolves around the Mishima Clan story wise.

No, it's nothing. I was talking with KMDP KMDP about your work, or more specifically, your name.

Wait, so Heihachi is the main villian? I assumed he was the protagonist because he was often mentioned as a Tekken rep

He’s the main villain, but he’s also the “face” of Tekken so to speak

Yeah, Heihachi's a pretty bad dude.

Kazuya's probably the protagonist iirc, but he's boring as ****, which is why Heihachi gets the spotlight.

Well just cause someone is the most well known of a game series doesn’t mean they’re a protagonist.

I just can't see Nintendo holding a direct less than 2 days after announcing it, sorry. They have had plenty of directs that have happened the day they were announced or several days after being announced, but all of those are smaller and specific directs. They have always given 5-7 days in advance for major Nintendo directs and at worst 3 days for smash directs. It wouldn't make sense to show off their internet service, something that affects every single online Nintendo user, in a direct with zero announcement. It's also weird that the details for the smash portion are literally just "Here's the new characters kthx bye." without any other details, game features, etc.

Direct Thursday--WOO!
New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe--ohhhh.

At least this rumor would give me a heads up of my disappointment, whereas Captain Toad disappointment caught me by surprise last Direct.

It's okay Super Mario 3D World... it's not your time. Perhaps they're working on a sequel and getting all the dumb ports out of the way. I say to myself so I can sleep at night.

Smash related, this kinda goes to supporting Mimique's predictions. If Isaac's revealed, Imma flip out.

Edited: Because rumors aren't leaks, and all of y'all bad habits are rubbing off on me.

Heihachi hasn't been the main villain since Tekken 1. But he has remained an antagonist of sorts until Tekken 7 kinda tried to redeem him.

Kazuya was the protagonist in the first Tekken game only but the twist with him is that he was evil all along (as seen in his Tekken 1 ending) and he becomes the series' main villain for the rest of it.

Jin has been protagonist and main "hero" for most of the series, except in Tekken 6 where he's the main villain (for reasons) and Tekken 7 where he's missing for most of the plot.

Namco likes to use all 3 as the face of the franchise but Heihachi is the most "iconic" one, Jin would be right below him and after him it's Kazuya.

How's that weird? They literally did that for Smash 4, where a Nintendo Direct would generally end up with a character reveal trailer.

Didn’t they also drop reveals alongside game announcements? Like Cloud with that Final Fantasy Explorers game, I remember it being like that at least

And of course Shulk with Xenoblade 3D and Duck Hunt with the game’s VC release

Nintendo's last major Direct before E3, the one from March that announced Smash, was announced a day before it aired, so the "5-7 days in advance" is just super wrong.

I think the Smash related portion of the direct is up in the air, because now there've been people saying something about a Mario icon to be next, which if that's the case, we should be getting Geno.

But shouldn't it be Isaac?! But the Mario icon - GENO?! WHY MUST THESE PEOPLE CONFUSE US?!

He's not really the villain, though. The story is much more complex than that. By now, I'd honestly consider Kazuya or Jin more villainesque than Heihachi.

Also, Tekken truly gained prominence with Tekken 3. I'd argue that the number of people who started with Tekken 3 or later greatly outweighs people who started with Tekken or Tekken 2, despite their initial success. Tekken 3 is the fourth best-selling PS1 game of all time and served as a significant shakeup to the roster that more or less pushed the Tekken lore and representation onto the path it's been ever since.

And in that time, it's hard to determine who's really been the poster boy of Tekken. Jin was the focal point of the Tekken 3/4/5 covers, Kazuya for Takken Tag and SFxTK, then all three characters shared Tekken 6, then Heihachi/Jin for TTT2 and Heihachi/Kazuya for Tekken 7.

Whatever the case may be, hopefully we'll have word by tomorrow evening at the latest. If we don't hear anything before then, I think it's safe to say there won't be a direct this week. I know they've announced one a day before in the past, but I think they normally like to have a little buildup.

I saw something in this thread about the music related section of the Smash Bros. page, like someone finding out that Mario would be the next franchise to represent. Can't really pinpoint where I can find it, though.

I've missed that. Who's saying a Mario icon is next, and how legitimate is the source? If it's an uncle at Nintendo, I won't lose sleep over it.

Also, as a side note--do you have a folder loaded with Scott pics? If so, I admire your commitment to being a stalker. :)

Edited: Saw the post before mine. Ehhhhh, I'm taking with many, many grains of salt.

I don't get how those two would correlate at all tbh.

I do expect for the online announcement to be a "big thing" but I don't see a "New" series game being a part of it. Like I said, ethier it's a sort of new creative game, F-Zero, or a new IP. I don't think they'll rehash certain things this time. Then again... I do kinda expect it to be mostly about Smash if they do happen to not have anything
