Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

If the trend is to be believed I really don't think we'll be getting Dante or Monster Hunter. Echos not counting.

Capcom: Mega Man, Ryu
Konami: Simon, Snake
Namco: Pac-Man, Agumon, Lloyd, Heihachi or Nightmare
Sega: Bayonetta, Sonic
Square Enix: Cloud, Geno
Oh Yeah I forgot Heihachi.

I realistically think we have 5 newcomers left.

2 in this month's direct + 1 or 2 echoes
3 in November + 2 or 3 echoes.

These 5 uniques are probably the biggest guesses people make (aka, were supported constantly with Ridley and K. Rool or have been rumored):
- Geno
- Isaac
- Incineroar
- Skull Kid
- Banjo and Kazooie

These echoes are usually the biggest guesses as well:
- Isabelle
- Shadow
- Dixie
- Ken

If there are more than this, amazing. If there are less, we already have 71+ characters to play as.

If not these characters, characters like Elma or BWD or Rhythm Heaven are good alternatives (OR additions if we get more than we think). We'll see what happens soon enough.

Personally since Heihachi was already in PSASBR and being kinda generic IMO. I'd much rather have Agumon or Nightmare. They're more unique and would be rather interesting to see.

I honestly feel like y’all are sleeping on Neku from The World Ends With You as a second unique Square Enix character

I personally have more attachment to him than Geno at least, though I wouldn’t be opposed to Geno joining. I’d just prefer Neku

- Banjo and Kazooie.
Honestly if anything I see them at most being DLC. I can't see them being Base.

I also think we're getting a Rhythm Heaven rep based on the hint in K. Rool's reveal trailer. We all know how Sakurai loves to leave hints as he did with King K. Rool with the barrels, ladder and jungle plants as well as Skull Kid with the pillows and chairs. That's also not getting started with the image with a bunch of characters against Rathatos and maybe might be stretching it but the sun at the end of K. Rool's trailer as DK and K.Rool slams fists.

That makes more sense, but it doesn't really change my mind. Would be nice, though.
Why not? This year's March Direct was announced a day before it aired and the Direct in April last year 2 days before it aired.
Having a Direct announced very close to it being live is normal.

If Nightmare is a thing, how would you guys feel about him coming with a Siegfried echo?

I don't really want another 50 fact extravaganzza kind of thing. I'd rather have Sakurai calmly showing and explaining the stuff, tbh.
YOU DON'T WANT THE ANNOUNCER TO TALK LIKE THIS?

I'm pretty sure we're not going to get another 50 fact extravaganza. With how the Directs look like they're going, it's not like there'd be enough to show off in that format. *then is completely blindsided as what we currently know is only 1% of the game*

Do I really want to know?
I bet people were saying PECK.

As much as I think it would be cool to get some predictions right, I'm hoping the next character is a K. Rool level surprise for all of us. It'd help keep things interesting.

I disagree tbh. Banjo and Kazooie represent an N64 era still incomplete in smash and have been as constantly requested as Ridley, K. Rool, Geno and Isaac. They have just as much a chance to join smash as K. Rool and Ridley have. The only thing people are assuming is that Nintendo and Microsoft are competitors so they can't include the character, which is a very big baseless assumption.

If Vergeben is right about there being Microsoft representation in Smash, it means both of them talk. The only literal property owned by Microsoft that is essentially a Nintendo character is Banjo and Kazooie.

I'm just surprised people don't bring it up too often.

I feel if Nightmare is a character then he has to come with a Siegfried costume or echo.
Thing is people only bring up Nightmare when people bring up Heihachi because they'd rather have Nightmare.

But in ALL honesty Heihachi is more likely, dead VA and all.

I just kind of feel by making them DLC. Microsoft will get some money back in the process. That's how deals and business goes.

Another reason is that Capcom, Konami, Namco, Sega, Square Enix based on a trend are getting two reps each (Echos not included). I think that'd be it for Third Party characters in the game base-wise. If there is to be another Third Party by different company it'll otherwise be DLC.

This Thursday? Would Sakurai really announce a direct 2 days before the Direct? Maybe, but I'll be conservative and say no.
Aren't directs typically announced to the media only a day or two ahead of the actual direct?

I don't buy that a direct is coming this Thursday, let alone a Smash-involved one, but that part isn't out of the ordinary.

I never understood why people always consider Heihachi to be generic.

To me he's one of the most interesting characters on the Tekken roster

Because we already have a fighting game character in the game which is Ryu. Although Heihachi is the most likely I'd rather have someone more unique and interesting in feeling the second Namco rep slot like Agumon or Nightmare.

Again too he already starred in PSASBR. Let another Namco rep have their time to shrine in Smash.

Gameplay wise. Personality wise he's a riot. But he is just a dude that punches and kicks, there's no denying that.

I'm getting tired of "X character represents Y thing!", especially when it's mostly "character from N64 game represents N64" "character from obscure game represents obscure game".
It's a bad argument and you all should feel bad.

The first and foremost thing I'm eager to see is more of the unseen stuff from characters who we haven't been able to play as in the demo. I really would like to see Peach, Daisy, Diddy Kong, and Young Link's Final Smashes. Oh yeah, I also want to see what Young Link's entrance animation is, I'm hoping it's the same one Link had in Smash 64.
What character reveal would disappoint you the most in the next Direct?
Anyone whose appeal comes from their unique abilities being revealed as an echo fighter.

I’m just gonna say; watching the entire speculation community fall into a pit of he said she said regarding leaks has been both tiring and really boring.

I very much doubt the Smash development team has suddenly become some huge open book in the last two months that any leaker with a twig’s worth of credibility can gleam information from. And yet, every other topic I see revolves around some random Twitter account or the other releasing crazy new info. People are treating these attention-seeking dorks like they’re writing gospel, and it’s become draining, imo.

Or Nintendo could just pay royalties, as they likely do with Sonic, Snake, Simon, Richter, Pac-man, and Jay-Zman. Hell, even Cloud, Ryu, and Bayonetta aren't DLC characters anymore, so Nintendo likely has to pay royalties on those characters too.

This happens all the time in the movie industry. It can happen here.

And not Conker or Joanna Dark. Nope.
Preeeeety sure neither of those characters are even as remotely popular

I don't expect a western third party character period, and if we did get one I think Rayman would come before them. They're popular but not nearly to the level of K Rool, Isaac, Ridley and Geno are, I feel like people generally overestimate their popularity tbh.

Also, "the n64 era" isn't a thing that needs representing, like, at all.

Ryu and Heihachi fight completely differently. If sharing the same game genre meant anything we could only have horror, visual novel, MMO, and board game characters.

Being in PSABR means nothing. It is a forgotten game series that will never have a sequel.

They're definitely very popular, but not really comparable to Ridley and K. Rool when it comes to Smash speculation, we're talking over a decade's worth of support in their cases, Banjo's only really gotten really big in relation to Smash speculation after the ballot became a thing. At the same time they are still 3rd party, and while I have no doubt Microsoft would be very cooperative it's still a more complicated inclusion than your average Nintendo character.

I hope they're in for their fans' sake, they deserve at least something that isn't a completely butchered mess after so many years, but let's not oversell their chances and history within Smash speculation. They've got a decent shot imo, but not more than that, at least not for the base game.

We also already got a fighting game character too who plays similar to him.

:ultryu:
I don't think Heihachi would play similair to Ryu at all tbh

Seeing as how Ryu was implemented into the smash formula i'm sure heihachi will get translated in a different way more akin to the Tekken gameplay.

I'm not necessarily sure why so many are so sure there's gonna be another 50-fact Extravaganza. Honestly, I'm only expecting one more info-dump out of this game around middle October or early November. I really don't think there's that much we still don't know about the game. I think another 30 minute Smash Direct is really all we need to wrap up pre-release hype.

Of course I could be completely wrong and they will do the 50-fact thing again, but it'd be weird. Like, why not just make it a normal Direct? To each their own, I suppose. I also don't believe they're gonna wait all the way until the middle of November to release the final roster, but that's just me.
