Check the trailer again. Ignoring the plunger thing, the Poltergust got a huge redesign.

If this did tease Luigi's Mansion 3 than that would be amazing.
I think this is just a coincidence and they just gave him that new type for Ultimate.

my guesses at the moment

• Bandana Waddle Dee. I think this direct proved that sakurai is looking at the ballot and popularity and he is very popular in Japan, its hard to deny even as someone who doesn't care for him all that much.
• Skull Kid. Zelda AT replaced with the moon, also referencing MM. Also suggested by Loz.
• Isabelle. AC AT replaced with Kapp'n (How is he going to work while on Tortimer's Island?), also suggested in leaks.
• Incineroar/Decidueye. Since Lycanroc wasn't deconfirmed I don't think that leak was 100% real, I think it'll be one of the two (or fingers crossed for Buzzwole).
• Shadow. Sonic AT replaced with Knuckles. Very easy and obvious echo choice and Richter proves 3rd parties can have echos.

A bit iffy on these.

• Hunter. Rathalos boss. No series in SSE got a boss but no character. (I mean we also got no third party boss but w/e).
• Geno. Heavily requested. Sakurai did suggest he could be an echo of Mii gunner but IDK how that'd work.

Seeing Ditto revived reminded me of the very far-fetched theory I had of "Everyone is Here" extending to not just previous playable characters, but cut/dropped characters like Dixie, Heihachi, Geno, Toon Zelda, etc.

I think his leaks are more convincing than his predictions, and I'm not much into leaks myself lol

Additionally, as far as his leaks go, he's said all he knows (supposedly) and anything else is guesses or personal prediction. Asking him for something he hasn't already said will probably just make him repeat that.

Basically all he said is he doesn't know who's in but says Incineroar is "unlikely".

How the EFF can someone not know if something's true or not yet claim it's unlikely without that knowledge of an alternative?

In any case, it's a good thing they showcased it, since Luigi's Mansion 3DS is coming this Fall. Gotta make sure that sells.

By just doing it.

He also doesn't think Isabelle or Geno is in, and he thinks there will be a gen 8 pokemon rep.
His predictions are just that, and he doesn't know enough information to confirm otherwise. He's just like anyone else- if he says he doesn't believe it, just like when anyone else here says they don't believe ___ character, it's for a reason he's probably just convinced himself of.

It's a statement of opinion. Not a statement of fact, despite how it's worded.

What do you think the chances are they reveal newcomers/echoes on the website/blog like they did for past Smash games? I can’t see them saving character reveals only for Directs.

Chances are newcomers will stick to being revealed on Directs like Smash 4

As much as I'm not into the idea of leakers, I'm going to try and do a little side project deep dive into researching Verg and Loz specifically. Mostly for my own justifications- I don't particularly care for Verg, but I have no real reason to doubt Loz yet.

With that being said, you should always take their words with a grain of salt.

Was utterly blown away by the Direct; I'm sure I'm not the only one who expected only two new character reveals max.
Simon Belmont I always thought was likely, I guess I had some weird faith in the Verg leak for some reason. King K. Rool seemed unlikely (I'm actually most excited for him now of all the newcomers, which is strange since I never wanted him until this morning), Chrom even less likely (and I'll admit I didn't/don't really want anymore FE characters, even being a Marth main since Melee), and Richter was never even conceptualized as a possibility in my mind.
So continuing to make predictions is a fun exercise, absolutely, but I think Nintendo will ultimately defy everyone's expectations, which I'm thrilled about! There clearly aren't any hard rules, although my only hope as far as precedents I never want to see made are characters like Goku. I also really really don't want Steve.

I'm already more than satisfied with everyone included at this point, but newcomers that I would most love to see in the next few months, most to least:

Skull Kid (Zelda)
Saki Amamiya (Sin & Punishment)
Ray MK III (Custom Robo)
Shantae (Shantae)
Mawile (Pokemon)
Kamek (Mario/Yoshi)

(wanted Mimikyu and Ashley too but.... And then I also imagined Gray Fox being functioning as a Saki echo too, but I haven't played Metal Gear so maybe that wouldn't have worked anyway.)

Dovahkiin is someone I've been seeing listed more recently, and I could get behind him even though he seems like the least appropriate for Smash Bros somehow. Further DK characters seems like it would overrepresent the series for kinda no reason imo but eh. I've never wanted Isabelle based on how annoying Villager is to fight mostly. w/ Mimikyu deconfirmed as the gen7 rep, I'd honestly rather see Nihilego or the Tapus over Decidueye/Incineroar, but I'm always biased against the starters everyone else loves somehow (I actually hated Greninja design-wise, my favorite Chesnaught). Lycanroc would be okaaay, esp the night form, but its the dusk form that's at all likely.

I haven't really paid much mind to echoes. I like that it allows for more characters to be included without exhausting as many resources, but I almost worry that Echoes will inadvertently stagnate particular characters' metagames; just the sheer volume of characters already contributes to this, but for example imagine that Dark Samus is better in pretty much everyway to Samus but still plays similarly enough that they would attract the same player base. How much more will potential advances in regular Samus's kit be overlooked if most of her players opt for the clone in tournament?
At the moment I'm a little concerned about this and also Roy's situation. Maybe one of Peach/Daisy too.

If Cpt. Toad does get a promotion, I wouldn't be too surprised if his trailer involved accidentally knocking characters off a mountain they're climbing, or them being swept away by Wingo. Or both.

I legitimately believe Black Shadow has more of a chance than Deathborn, notably because by the SSB4 trophy descriptions, they follow the GP Legend/Climax timeline. Zoda is described to be modified by Black Shadow, which is only true in that series (and the anime but the anime was created before the concept of the games and pretty much served the purpose of Roy in Melee).

They're also the same person in that series so win/win. I also want to hear Verde Coeden Scalesworth thoughts about it since I recall she knows a little bit about the subject as well.

I wonder if it's a stage or a part of a Boss Rush mode. If you didn't notice, most boss stages in SSE had flat areas as battlegrounds. I think the only one that didn't was Meta Ridley on the Falcon Flyer.

**** you got 3 Samuses too. Paper Mario is definitely up there, but I don't know if he's a K. Rool/Ridley tier person (that's more Geno). Simon was a surprise though, still never heard of much support of him pre-Verg. I wonder if it's related to the Ballot.
