Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Wii Fit Trainer - Most likely a discontinued series.

Greninja/Robin - Popular Pokemon. But, so is Mewtwo. We can't keep every newcomer who appears in the last game in every installment until each series reaches double digits. Sometimes characters with a lot of credentials get cut, not because they aren't important, but because they are lower on the list of priority.

Characters aren't necessarily PLANNED to be cut. It's a matter of time depleting.

Shulk - I don't understand the "face of the series" thing. His game was popular and got ported, but I don't see why that's a reason to insist on having him instead of a more relevant character of the series.

Duck Hunt - I was just suggesting that maybe Sakurai might come up with another retro character. I wasn't inferring that something was wrong with Duck Hunt. Just that maybe the new one might get in first and then further in development the last one doesn't make it because there already is one.

Maybe "cuts" is not the term that should be used when discussing this. "Cut" implies that the character was deliberately removed from the game, as apposed to never implemented due to time constraints and much more important characters being prioritized.

**** happens and characters that are WAY deserving get cut. Mewtwo, Pokemon Trainer, Lucas, Ice Climbers.
Counterpoint though...EarthBound is straight up a discontinued series, while Wii Fit is just speculated to be. Honestly I don't think it matters too much. Not to mention the whole F-Zero thing.

Granted, if Wii Fit Trainer wasn't already in Smash, then it might pose an issue...but she already is. She doesn't need to stay relevant, necessarily.

I can imagine.
Okay, then you may as well not even bother addressing me.

Ike is a main character of Radiant Dawn but not THE main character.
This is turning into a semantics argument. I'm not trying to act like I won or you're beneath me or something, but I respectfully want nothing to do with this discussion if we're gonna quibble over details like that.

It seems like every time I dip my toe in here, I get pounced on by you and Opossum for the least bit counter intuitive suggestions or have to get lectured on the difference between "A" and "The".

You people are forgetting that by having an early Amiibo, Robin also represents codename steam and us playable in fire emblem fates.

Damn I liked codename Steam. Wish I wasn’t the only one. Also could use a second chance on switch.

You're not the only one, friend.

Henry for Smash.

I'm not trying to attack you. It's just exhausting to see the same sort of argument appear once again after dealing with it for years post-Brawl.

Ike being the main character of Radiant Dawn is just an idea that's been bugging me for ages now. Bit of a sour note for me.

Regardless, why is it the fact that Ike is supposedly a main character of two games that important when it wasn't the reason he was included or kept in the first place?

Shulk - I don't understand the "face of the series" thing. His game was popular and got ported, but I don't see why that's a reason to insist on having him instead of a more relevant character of the series.
Why not both?

Xenoblade is setting itself up to have a cast of new characters each game.

Typically, the first main character becomes the face barring rare cases like Ness taking Ninten's spot or Cloud taking it from the Warrior of Light.

Moreover, Shulk and XC is generally more popular than any other main character or game in the franchise. Look at reviews, look at general impressions, etc.

When people think of Xenoblade, they think of Shulk and Gaur Plains. It's why he's the face and the first one is the premiere game.

Question: Sakurai has chosen YOU to help him with the next game's roster and he needs you to pick an new Kirby character for him, however there's an catch, he's banned you from picking Bandana Dee, Dark Matter, Magolor, Galacta Knight and Susie, with that in mind who would you pick?

I really doubt that's how the licensing works. Logically Nintendo would've licensed all the characters in perpetuity for "Smash 4", regardless of the console. Licensing a future game, sure, that'd have to be done all over again, but it's the same game, just enhanced slightly and on a different platform. The licensing likely holds over.

And even if for some reason it doesn't, you'd have to imagine they had plans for the port extending at least since the DLC, in which case they would've licensed those third-party characters plus Sonic and Mega Man, considering Sega and Capcom were involved. Pac-Man would also likely be secured in a port since Namco would still be in play. And I don't think you've anything to worry about with Nintendo characters.

Probably a non-issue tbh.
To be honest, I don't know much about how this things work, it was just something that suddenly occured to me. But you seem versed about this and if it works the way you say then that seems very logical and there is probably very little to worry about.

I was kinda wary that they were taking long in making a Smash 4 port, but after seeing the mini direct I have renewed hope. Also, in restrospective, it kinda makes sense to me now why it is taking it's time. The Switch is soon going to turn a year and it has been selling like hotcakes; when it came out it relied on Zelda and Mario Kart to move numbers and Nintendo was just testing the waters with them. Now that is has managed to establish itself better, they will probably be more confident to port such a big title like Smash 4.

Forgive me for not searching hundreds of pages, but is there a reason people seem to be assuming that Sakurai would be involved with a new Smash game? Didn't he say he was done?

If I recall correctly, he said the same thing for Melee and Brawl, so him saying he's done really doesn't have much meaning.

This. But something also to remember is that even if he wouldn't be directing, it's unlikely he won't be involved at all, especially for a port of 4. It's still something he created, so it makes sense that Nintendo would want him on the project in general.

Gooey, Dark Meta Knight, Adeleine, Taranza, Prince Fluff, Haltmann and Marx are also banned.
Gooey. Especially if he return in the next Kirby game.

I understand your arguments but it's like you're making them in a vacuum. I'm interested in knowing where any of this precedent is coming from. Since when has a dormant or dead franchise been removed for that reason? When has one retro character affected the fate of another retro character? When has a small series like Xenoblade had to kick out a unique character for the sake of adding a new one? It's a little disingenuous to look at cuts and say, "see they got cut, anyone can get cut", without looking at why they were cut. It's not for the reasons you're proposing. None of this stuff has ever happened before. I get the fact that unexpected cuts happen, I get that character priority is a thing, but that's not the same as suggesting cuts will occur or priority will be based on reasons that have, seemingly, never before played a factor.

The only ones I can somewhat agree with are Greninja/Robin. Not Robin specifically, because he was given a lot of priority compared to half of the current FE roster, where the inevitable cut(s) will instead almost assuredly originate, but the concept of trimming the FE portion of the roster. That I expect. And Greninja... it's possible. I don't know how likely it is, but I wouldn't classify Greninja a safe character.

From a personal standpoint, I can see both good and bad coming out of a new director taking over for Smash 5. An example of good may be that we may get newcomers that were previously denied by Sakurai for one reason or another such as King K. Rool or, for a more likely example, Bandanna Dee. I can also see a new director having a different viewpoint on what gets in Smash, thus leading to some surprises. A new director may also be a breath of fresh air; we've been with Sakurai for quite some time and it could be interesting seeing someone new taking the reigns.

I can see some downsides however. One outcome that could be likely with a new director, and one I definitely do not want, is a "reboot" of sorts where we simply get a roster of 30-40 characters who were decided as the "most important Nintendo characters". This may lead to cutting out veterans that have already had a place with players and are series mainstays such as Jigglypuff or, for a more extreme example, Falco or even Fox. While I can see some benefit in this, such as updating some outdated movesets to pay homage to more recent games (:4mario::4link: are the first to come to mind) but at the same time I'd rather keep them with their old movesets than have them at the expense of making too many cuts to the roster, be it vets from Melee, Brawl, etc. There are probably some other things that could be changed for the worst that I'm missing, but you get the gist.

As I said, this is all from a personal standpoint. Weather a new director will be a good or bad thing remains to be seen.

Let me guess. You didn't get the character(s) you wanted?

That's typically the first/main reason.
Sakurai hates competitive smash. This may be a speculation thread, but it still looks a bit silly to try to read my mind when all you had to do was ask me why.

insteading of listing a top to bottom list of characters we want/predict will get in, let’s discuss gameplay features. SSBM introduces the Side B among other things. Brawl introduced Final Smashes and online. Smash 4 introduced custom specials and 8 player smash.

Name your top 6-8 gabepkay features you want to see included:

8. Customizable Entrance, Victory, and Taunt Animations (a bit like what PSASBR did)
7. Team-based Final Smashes
6. 8 bit and 16 bit versions of Smash
5. Pokédex Codex like for Pit and Snake
4. Customizable items (ray gun or stunning ray gun)
3. Paint Mode (to change character colors)
2. New additional Specials Moveset plus Customs for each character
1. More character based Trophies (like for specials or alternate costumes. I was really hoping for Megaman trophies highlighting his specials. Bring back Kirby hat trophies, too!!)

Regular old waddle dee would be my first pick. Adeline If that’s cheating.

Not including easy mode, where I wouldn't even blink to say Adeleine, this question is tough!

I think TAC has some potential for an interesting moveset. He'd be fast but frail, and for every ablity he copies, he turns into a different helper. If he's in Star Allies, he'll be even more viable and has the potential to represent Kirby's history in a number of ways. The only issue is he'd be another character that was pushed by Sakurai's games, but with such limited options, I'm not sure who else to pick.

Well... that's not true. She beat out Toad in terms of general popularity? Toad was ranked eighth most popular not Mario character, not Nintendo character, video game character in Japan in a post-Brawl, pre-Smash 4 poll. Not to mention, and this is more anecdotal (but that's really all we've to go on), go watch any given video of casuals playing Mario Kart and see how frequently Toad gets picked. Toad is, guaranteed, a more popular character generally.

Also there's this, which dates to pre-Rosalina reveal, indicating Waluigi is/was more popular than her as well (it's not Smash related - people thought it was. Uprising had also just came out - hence the high placement of the KI characters). And both of these are in Japan, where normally I would give Rosalina even more of an edge.

I can't speak to Paper Mario or Bowser Jr, since I've nothing to corroborate my claims, though Bowser Jr was used much more in Mario merchandise and promotional material dating from before Rosalina's reveal. I might also suggest checking out who else is featured more prominently in Mario merchandise dating from before the reveal.

But do you have any actual proof? I understand it's difficult to prove these kind of metrics, but the only people who have actually challenged my claims have been those sporting Rosalina avatars.

People were also unaware, at the time, of how crucial a role being of recent importance would play.
I don't have any polls to back up my claim, but I don't think it really matters anyway. In order for me to have a solid argument as to how popular Rosalina really was back then, I would need not one but several polls to back up my claim. There could be many variables effecting the votes in a single poll (like the recent release of KI in your poll), so consistency over a long period of time is really the only true indicator of popularity.

Perhaps "general popularity' wasn't a good choice of words. Far more people knew about Toad and Waluigi than Rosalina from the early Wii to early Wii U era, so it's a given that those two have the strong advantage of being iconic. However, just because a character is iconic doesn't necessarily mean they're more popular than those who aren't. If that were true, Goomba is more popular than Daisy. One of your points was that most casual MK fans pick Toad over Rosa. This isn't a solid argument on Toad being more popular. Rosalina has been a unlockable character in all three MK titles. Do you know how many of those casual gamers had unlocked Rosalina? MK8 was random, and unlocking Rosa in MKWii took a long time if you didn't buy Galaxy (And MKWii sold 3x as many copies as Galaxy. I imagine most casual gamers didn't buy both). I've played online from all three MK games Rosalina was playable in, and she was easily one of the most frequently selected characters, even moreso than Waluigi and Toad. I suppose I shouldn't include MK8 since that was post-reveal, but I remember Rosalina absolutely FLOODED online. Another one of your points was that the characters you listed had more merchandise. Toad, Waluigi, and Junior had been around longer and made more appearances than Rosa, so it's only normal for them to receive more merchandise. It's not fair to say Waluigi is more popular if people don't even have an impression of Rosalina to compare him to. Their consumer appeal is much more broad than Rosa because, at the time, only new and more dedicated Nintendo fans would recognize her. That's why the merchandise Rosalina has been getting now sells so quickly; she's starting to appear more often and more casual fans can recognize her.

I can't provide any solid evidence, but I can at least relay what I saw over the years. Rosalina has always been a highly popular character, but the numerous appearances of Toad, Junior, and Waluigi in both main games and spin-offs prior to her debut in Galaxy has given the illusion that she is comparably less popular than them. If any of those characters made their first appearance in Galaxy, I think the difference in popularity would me more obvious.

All of the Pokemon characters are fine, but cutting Greninja is fair enough. Robin though... You consider full clone Lucina to be a higher priority than one of the two FE characters who doesn't rely entirely on a sword?

Shulk - I don't understand the "face of the series" thing. His game was popular and got ported, but I don't see why that's a reason to insist on having him instead of a more relevant character of the series.
Shulk = Marth. We'll probably never see him again in anything besides remakes and spin-offs, but I think he's here to stay.

Duck Hunt - I was just suggesting that maybe Sakurai might come up with another retro character. I wasn't inferring that something was wrong with Duck Hunt. Just that maybe the new one might get in first and then further in development the last one doesn't make it because there already is one.
I guess I can see where you're coming from. Just remember that people said the same thing about ROB.

Sir, there's a Mr. Captain Falcon waiting for you on the other line. He said he wants to lodge a complaint.
Can I stress to my detractors what a "false dichotomy" is?

It seems every time some makes a suggestion about characters being added or cut. 99% of the time, the response is to go back in say "What about this character? What about that character?"

You can't take a character with completely different credentials, completely different background, and completely different status, as an equivalency!

Captain Falcon is a four time veteran. Wii Fit Trainer is not.

Captain Falcon's series was continued long after his first appearance. Wii Fit has yet to get an installment since her one and ONLY appearance as a playable character. And it ain't no retro classic.

One of these characters is not like the other.

You're literally straw manning my position and I'M being disingenuous?!?!?

  1. The idea that something hasn't happened before, therefore it won't is incredibly false. You can't just go "When has that happened or when has this happened?"
  2. I NEVER said anyone can get cut because cuts are unexpected and nothing I ever said even remotely implied such an idea and then you claim I don't look at why these characters were cut because you disagree.
I'm REALLY tired of you just declaring my positions for me and then proceeding to refute something I never even inferred. I'm not gonna bother responding to something I never said and if you keep doing it, I'm just gonna start blocking people for the sake of keeping my attitude in check.

If anyone is being disingenuous, it's you. You're requiring that something has to happen previously under very exact and precise, IDENTICAL circumstances in order for it to be valid reasoning in a proposal.

Fair enough. But even when we focus solely on WFT and her series alone, there's still plenty of other reasons to keep her. She's has a unique moveset, comes from a series that got over 40 million sales, and represents an important part of Nintendo's history - the success of the Wii. If being discontinued is so important, we might as well start digging a grave for all three KI characters. Just like the Wii Fit series, it's only had three games and doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Heck, it's last game was in 2012, one year before Wii Fit U was released. With that argument, Wii Fit > KI.

Mods and custom skins I see being a lot more likely given more recent Nintendo games.

I'm just saying that up until this point, there hasn't been a precedent for those kinds of cuts, so expecting them, to me, seems a bit extreme, is all.

Cuts have generallay been kept at a minimum due to Sakurai's literally-crippling dedication, outside of factors beyond his control like 3DS hardware and the rabbit hole that is third party licensing. So even then, I just feel like there are enough characters with a higher chance of being cut that folks like Greninja, Robin, or Duck Hunt wouldn't even be considered. Lucas, Roy, Dark Pit, and Doctor Mario (though not Lucina, but that's due to me being convinced IS won't let her leave) all seem like no-brained cuts if it came down to it.

I will say, though, that if Sakurai isn't directing the next one (which is entirely possible) I think the cuts will be more extreme, as I don't see a new director necessarily having the same morbid dedication.

Just wanted to say my piece, is all. Please don't think I'm attacking you or anything.

Except Cosmic said she represent the success of the Wii. When you see it from that angle, her inclusion makes sense.

Though something Cosmic didn't bring is the fact that the Wii Fit series is not going to go anywhere now, since the newest console is not a Wii and, like you said, not all Wii Fit fans care about Smash, but that's due to most of them being casuals who don't play video games and are fooled by the game counting as actual exercise. Yes, I said it. Come at me, Wii Fit fans :troll:

Anyway, roasts aside, Wii Fit Trainer still brings a very unique moveset, so her chances of being cut aren't really high, unlike the non-Lucina clones (and Lucina is only because I'm sure IS would never allow her to be cut). Not seeing her in the next Smash is a possibility, but she can also come back due to being unique and a really "WTF?" character that adds to the silliness that is Smash.

Not to mention a lack of relevance has never been an excuse before. Sure, Captain Falcon is too much of a meme to be cut, but there are people like Ness and especially Lucas, who was never seen outside of Japan if you don't count Smash. Both come from a franchise that has a small following at best and never gets anything but jokes about not getting an international release of their latest 10-year-old Japan-only game these days and yet, it's still strongly present in Smash.

How many Game and Watch players played Melee?

How many Ice Climber fans played Melee?

How many Kid Icarus diehards played Brawl?

How many Duck Hunt enthusiasts played Smash 4?

WFT wasn't added to appeal to her weight-watching adult fanbase. She was added because her franchise was well-known and Sakurai thought it would be a unique concept.

I disagree whole heartedly with that. Wii Fit Trainer is an interesting addition. We need more interesting characters like that.

Super Smash Bros isn't just about what the Smash community wants. The Smash community, myself included, is cancer.

Can you imagine if Smash fans were actually in charge of the roster?

I wouldn't call any of the clones a high priority per say, but I think their stance of staying in Smash 5 relies on completely different factors, most notably time. The only reason :4drmario::4lucina::4darkpit: were upgraded to clone status was that the devs had some left over development time, and used it to expand the roster (along with some individual reasons, such as Sakurai not wanting Dark Pit to use the Three Sacred Treasures as a Final Smash, and Dr. Mario getting his own slot in Melee). If they have some extra development time in Smash 5 yet they don't have enough time for Robin, those three clones are characters I can easily expect to make the return instead.

The bottom line is that :4robinm: staying in the roster is judged by completely different reasons and factors than :4lucina: staying in.

I can imagine it would never please the casual audience, which is the main audience of Smash games, thus the games wouldn't sell as well.

The idea that characters that little time to implement like :4lucina::4drmario::4darkpit: would get removed over "more important" characters kind of contradicts the idea of removing characters because of TIME constraints.

Removing those characters doesn't give you time to add unique ones. Removing them accomplishes nothing.

Um, just going to bring this up, but bringing back a veteran with just a few balance alterations will probably take less time than decloning a clone. So if they don't have enough time for an already completed moveset from a previous game, how could they have enough time to make a clone character unique?
