You can say Sakurai is just some buisiness man, but I feel like Sakurai is more than that.
I just really like how Sakurai works very hard to try to appeal to us and give us these great games.

I'd say that any indie that actually has more than one game to their name might have a chance (sorry, Quote fans).

Besides, Frisk would have to get in before Sans, simply because third-party character inclusions primarily focus on the protags at the moment.

Regardless of what happens on Wednesday, I have this to say.
For the love of god can we actually talk about new stuff that they'll show instead of 2 months of "THIS CHARACTER SHOULD BE AN ECHO AND IT WORKS" or "THIS POKEMON! NO THAT ONE!"

I think Elma has a decent shot at getting into the game, but I also think her chances are overstated by many. I apologize in advance to @Rie Sonomura

First of all, the XCX composer thing. Given Ultimate's time frame and the project plan, it seems very likely that there will be XCX content in this game in some form. Getting some music from the game seems like a no brainer. I think it's entirely possible we could get a new original piece of music from XCX with no new character. There have been similar things done in the past, such as The Mysterious Murasame Castle getting it's own piece of original music in Smash 4 despite no character or stage. Really, the thing with the XCX composer only solidifies that we'll get new music for XCX which could potentially be added onto a new XCX stage or maybe another Xenoblade stage not related to X.

Then there's the Xenoblade characters thing from Bill Trinen. If you go back and watch the interview, it's clear that Bill has no idea what he's talking about. He just had a real brain fart moment and was trying to think of what franchises were new to Smash and spouted out Xenoblade when he couldn't even remember what characters from it were in Smash. Plus, if he said "The Xenoblade Character" in reference to Shulk that would've made him look like an idiot.

And then you DO have to take into account that if Elma gets into the game, it won't be because of fan demand. XCX was released after the ballot in the west and in the midst of the ballot in Japan. There's no way she was able to build up enough support at the time to be considered for fan demand, so her only chance at getting in is if Sakurai picks her himself, though that's still entirely possible.

I stated this at the beginning, and I'll say it again. I think Elma has a decent shot at getting into the game, but people make her out out to be way more likely than I think she actually is. Maybe she'll be revealed at the Direct on Wednesday and everything I said up above will get thrown out the window but I wouldn't hold my breathe for it.

You are imo correct with Elma's timeframe and it doesn't help either that X was not that well received in Japan, while unlike XB2 we had Sakurai praising that game atleast, so if Rex & Pyra are not a Greninja situation (which is not impossible either, seeing that XB2 was in development since 2014), this stuff atleast bodes well for Rex & Pyra if they are going to be DLC imo.

Elma's biggest hurdle is imo still that newcomer slots are limited and I feel Sakurai wants to give us the ballot stuff at base and the switch era to be repped with DLC.

Elma does have one major thing going for her though, but she has to be revealed this month. She can still appear later offcourse, but this time frame is imo her golden ticket.

Elma will become a playable cameo DLC blade like Shulk, Fiora, KOS-MOS and T-elos. However I do feel Elma and X in general are a bit shafted by Monolith still, because if the the datamine is believed its more they threw a bone to X fans, because she will more be a challenge mode reward, instead of the nice dialogue Shulk & Fiora get with Rex's party.

Also this update should arrive before or with Torna because there is another light katana blade that the Torna boxart spoiled, that is part of the expansion pass blade trio's

If Elma gets casually revealed at Monolith's twitter for XB2, i'm honestly worried about what Monolith thinks of X in general, because like I said Japan really was not that keen on it and Takahashi promised that the next game would be story focused again, like few weeks after X launched in Japan, and thats when XB2 started development if I recall correctly, so it comes over to me that Takahashi listened to some of the backslash X got.)
