Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

If you’re dying to see Dust (without Fidget though) in a Smash-like, you can look up footage of him in Indie Game Battle... a game that was cancelled because the dev is terrible at relations with his third parties, but still has quite a few characters and stages for 5 bucks.

Just saying, but, since Sakurai wasn’t the director of the Dark Matter based games IIRC, isn’t Dark Matter also hurt by theoretical bias? Correct me if I’m wrong.
Dust is a planned future update character for Indie Pogo so that's an option as well.

I know that, I’m just pointing that out because Dust is in IGB right now, plus IGB is more explicitly similar to Smash while Indie Pogo is more of its own thing.

So, going back to playing Brawl made me realize one of my biggest issues with Smash 4. The single-player stuff sucked.

There was no Adventure mode or story.
Classic Mode, Special Orders, and to some degree Events felt super repetitive.
All-Star Mode was exhausting, partially due to the pacing and how many characters there were to fight.
They ruined Target Smash by turning it into Angry Birds.
Best part about Smash Tour was having a new fighter every stock, but otherwise wasn't fun at all.
Although not necessarily single-player, having most of the roster unlocked from the beginning felt boring.

I really hope Smash Ultimate has a better single-player experience this time around. A story mode, old-school Target Smash, a Boss Rush mode, and improvements to other single-player modes would all be great to see.

>IMDB
It means nothing, anyone can edit IMDB, I've edited the Smash Ultimate page before, @Lampy has edited it before, literally anyone can do this, IMDB has zero credibility.
You know what they say, if it’s from IMDb than it MUST be true, RIGHT?

What would your reaction be if Shantae were to be a playable character?
Good.
Excellent.
I feel like she's a character that has a wealth of things to pull from for her moveset. She has her transformations, magic, and her hair.
She'll be the second hair-based fighter after Bayonetta

Um so what are we talking about now?
Umm... let's see...

After the wild "Steamed Hams" tangent, we briefly discussed what characters would taste like... Imadethistoseealeak Imadethistoseealeak brought up that there may be a general pattern to 3rd party reveals... someone on GameFAQS did a character poll... MagnesD3 MagnesD3 asked why Bandana Dee was popular, and True Blue Warrior True Blue Warrior asked what people would think about Shantae being playable. Also 92MilesPrower 92MilesPrower posted his Rosalina codec.

That covers... pretty much everything?

Lack of new info is driving us insane, as usual.

Alright, my husband works at nintendo and I’m kinda mad at them for firing him, so I’m gonna leak everything he told me

>Porky Minch from the Mother/Earthbound series joins the battle as a powerful and somewhat large fighter that is easy to read, almost like a boss fight. He uses his design from Mother 2/Earthbound in the spider mech, the same one used in Earthbound's semi final boss, but he does have a skin that makes his skin colors and face match Mother 3, as well as have a pig mask symbol(a pig nose) on his mech. His attacks include long jabs with his spider like legs, he can release gas that stuns the foe, tear into other fighters with a sharp jab of his leg, and use his legs to boost himself high up into the air. What I mean by him being telegraphed like a boss is that, for example, his Neutral Special, Gas Cloud, has his robot charge up energy, showing his mouth open like he's sucking up energy, and then after about 2-3 seconds of charging, he releases. You can not only easily outrun this in the time he charges, but if you attack his glass shell during this, it cancels the attack and deals extra damage. Or, his Up Special, spider bounce, has him crouch the machine down, then boost up, but if you hit well he is crouching, it sends him downward. He is fairly frail to compensate for the power of his attacks. He can be ko'd by pretty much any smash attack at 60% or higher.

>Golisopod from Pokemon is a new character. Yes, of all the new Pokemon, it seems Sakurai added Golisopod. This Water and Bug type is somewhat sluggish but is primarily based around quick attacks and getting away. For example, it’s dash attack is a quick swipe, but at any point in the animation you can press a again to dash back about 2/3rds the length of one battlefield platform. It’s Neutral Special is literally based around this, being U-Turn. Golisopod glows green and dashes forward, but if the attack connects, Golisopod goes backward. It’s rather bulky, and decently strong, especially since its Side Special, Razor Shell, can temporarily lower a foes defenses. If it weren’t for its sluggishness, it might be a pretty good character, as it has some great strengths such as easily being able to escape from a foe, and having a decent amount of long ranged moves like Water Pulse as a forward smash and Sludge Wave as a down air, making spacing not be a problem. Arguably it’s most unique feature is First Impression. The first 3 attacks they use do twice as much damage and if hit on the sweet spot, can spike. It is because of this that I have seen some players back at the treehouse sometimes SD in order to get some strong attacks in.

>Susie from Kirby is added as Sakurai has heard about the complaints that only Kirby content from his games is in, so he added her as she is from Planet Robobot, the newest Kirby game at the time Ultimate started development, it wasn’t even quite out yet, actually. She is a tech based character, with attacks like a tazer that does damage and stuns foes for about as long as Zero Suit Samus’s Neutral Special as her Side Special, or a multi-hitting drill attack has her back air. She is a fairly speedy character, but also somewhat frail. She uses attacks from the Robobot itself in her moveset, explained in smash that she somehow installed it’s attacks onto herself as her outfit is rather technological. This includes a chainsaw as her Forward Smash, a long burst of fire as her Up Smash that can even set foes on fire, dealing gradual damage for a few seconds, unleashing a loud sound wave for her Down Smash, growing wheels for her Dash Attack, dashing forward and growing jetwings for the animation of her forward air, a strong and lengthy electrical jab as her Neutral Special, a turbo charged spinning Parasol as her Up Special, and even dropping a contact based bomb as her Down Air.

>Banjo and Kazooie are one of two (non echo) third party fighters added to this game. They’re a lot like Duck Hunt in that they can have 2 sources of attacks at once, like their Down Smash, Breegul Bash, which not only damages from the shock wave it causes, but also Kazooie herself. They have 3 jumps, two from Banjo and one from Kazooie, and of course can then recover with Beak Bomb. Their Neutral Special involves shooting eggs from Kazooie, which can be charged. Simply pressing the button or pressing for less than about a second or 2 shoots a regular, blue egg. Holding from then on up to about 3 seconds shoots a spotted, fiery red egg. Charging past that will instantly shoot, regardless of whether you release the button or not, a green, lined Grenade Egg that creates a small explosion, stunning the target. One of their more interesting attacks is their Side Special, Wonder Wing, which lasts for about 2 seconds(or less, ends if you let go) where they cannot be harmed and hurt enemies. However, to compensate for how useful this move is, they have an un-cancelable opening up animation where they slowly open up, stand up with their arms out, stretch them a bit and close, which takes about 2 seconds. This animation does end if they are attacked but that’s obviously not ideal. One detail I imagine was hard to implement is that when dashing Banjo rides on Kazooie, often known as the Talon Trot. People will likely be happy to hear there are zero nuts and bolts references within their moveset.

>The final (unique) newcomer, Phoenix Wright from Ace Attorney. His moveset is mainly about exposing weak spots and finding good opportunities to strike. His Neutral Special, Objection, has him point his finger and say the iconic phrase, along with the text bubble showing up as he stuns any foe touched by his finger. His Down Special, Examine, has him guide a small square to a spot on the screen and examine it. If it’s a fighter, it will either do nothing, or within a small hitbox on every fighter, designed to be near the middle of their model, it will make them have a thick red outline, and when attacked, they will take double the damage and knockback they would normally for just one attack. One of the coolest aspects of his moveset is how he references various objects and items throughout the series, such as dropping the Sacred Urn for his Dash Attack, whacking foes with the Thinker for his Up Smash, or even stabbing with the Samurai Spear as his Forward Aerial. For being a Lawyer however, some of his moves are a bit wacky, such as his Up Special involving him bouncing off a desk that appears midair, or his Side Special throwing evidence whether it be papers, a banana, or a cup of coffee. His skins are actually pretty inspired, being based off other Ace Attorney characters, mainly(but not exclusively) other lawyers, like a red and white coat for Apollo, a scarlet coat for Edgeworth, but also things like a green coat for Gumshoe and a purple coat for Maya.

Echos:
Of the 14 newcomers in this game, 7 are echo fighters. The 6 you don’t know being Dark Samus for Samus, Ninten for Ness, Shadow for Sonic, Isabelle for Villager, Roll for Mega Man, and Ms.Pac-Man for Pac-Man.

Assist Trophies:Many new assist trophies are added, as well as some removed like Isabelle and Shadow. Every assist trophy ever besides Little Mac, Isabelle, and Shadow is in this game, as well as many new ones. Due to the nature of Assists, it’s possible he didn’t seen them all, but he has seen Cranky Kong from Donkey Kong Country, Toadette from Super Mario, Ramblin’ Evil Mushroom from Earthbound, Chorus Kids from Rhythm Heaven, Bandanna Dee from Kirby, Off The Hook from Splatoon 2 as almost an echo assist, Biff from Arms, Mumbo from Banjo Kazooie, Blue Badger from Ace Attorney, Blanka from Street Fighter 2, Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, and Shovel Knight from Shovel Knight.

Pokeballs:Every Pokeball ever besides Charizard is in this game. Added ones include(just like assists, there could be some he didn’t see) Tapu Koko, Rowlet, Skuntank, Necrozma, Zygarde, Nihilego, Pangoro, Marshadow, Goomy, and Pikipek.

Stages:Like characters, he can say every stage in the game due to how they work. First of all, the only returning stages that he didn’t see are Pyrosphere, Miiverse, Hanenbow, Pokefloats, Sector Z, and Planet Zebes. New stages include Court from Ace Attorney, Gruntilda’s Castle from Banjo Kazooie, Spring Stadium from Arms, Patched Plains from Kirby Planet Robobot, Electro Dome from Mario Kart 8, Ultra Space from Pokemon Sun and Moon, Cave of the Past from Earthbound, Gang Plank Galleon from Donkey Kong Country, Picto Chat X, and Dr.Mario from Dr.Mario.

One last thing, unlocking characters? Introducing:Master Hand’s tournament, you fight many fighters in a 10 round tourney and at the end fight master hand, and earn a random fighter. You can also buy fighters from a shop. That’s all, see you in september.

I see Bandana Dee as Kirby's Funky Kong.

Not seen as a "needed" newcomer, but still would be seen as a welcomed addition along with the main cast.

Is this one leak or 5? Jesus that's a big wall of text... let's see.
Things I like from the leak: Porky as playable (I like this a lot), Banjo and kazooie, Golisopod as pokemon rep (he looks awesome), and some echoes like roll, isabelle and dark samus.
Things I don't like? what is missing, like K. Rool, and the fact that says that Ms. Pacman would be a pacman echo makes this leak obviously fake... if it wasn't already obvious for the "my husband works at nintendo"
Nice reading, thanks for posting, at least this fake leaker didn't just post a list of names but tried to make a full moveset.

Well, now you've got me thinking of them adding a newcomer and an echo of the newcomer at the same time...
That happened in Kirby Return to Dream Land, where they added Spear Kirby as a newcomer and Bandana Waddle Dee was his Echo :p

(And then, in Star Allies, Spear Kirby was cut but Dee remained and thus became a completely unique character... do you think that’ll ever happen in a future Smash game, where an original character is cut but their clone / echo remains?)

Comparing Bandana Dee to Funky Kong is like comparing Geno to Guillo.
Remember Guillo?
Of course you don't.

That's not how Dixie works tho.
It will be if she's an Echo

Well to be fair...we had/have Smash Run, and Classic Mode didn’t feel repetitive

All Star Mode is only gonna get worse with the multitude of characters in Ultimate

Smash Run > Smash Tour

Having most of the roster from the start made things easier to instantly start playing everyone than having to go through a “ruthless” method was for the best (Ultimate might be even easier with unlocking characters due to there being 60+ characters)

And if an adventure mode is more like SSE than the Melee version...you’d be crazy (but you’d be sane if you’re thinking it’d be more like Melee)

Hakkun for Smash!

and then next month we can have a reveal trailer for Kyle Hyde.

Hohohohoho... delightfully devilish, KirbyWorshipper2465 KirbyWorshipper2465 !
On that note, who else hasn't been theorized by the fake leaks that could catch people off-guard?

You know what? It makes sense.

Mario tastes like baked lasagna. Kirby tastes like a marshmallow souffle. Bayonetta? She tastes like pure salt.
Nah, if anything it's Duck Hunt that tastes like salt. Bayonetta is more like cheesecake.

No, you're absolutely correct, Shimomura developed all the Dark Matter trilogy games.
Not that it matters much now, seeing as Shimomura went MIA after Kirby 64. Shinya Kumazaki uses material from his games nowadays.

Well to be fair...we had/have Smash Run, and Classic Mode didn’t feel repetitive

All Star Mode is only gonna get worse with the multitude of characters in Ultimate

You know, the Wii U version of SSB4 encouraged unlocking more of the roster, so that must have been an early sign of what's to come here.

The only way that I can see that happen is in a Reboot where they cut :ultmarth: or :ultfalcon: but keep :ultlucina: and :ultganondorf:. I doubt it though.

And then he just vanished off the face of the Earth.

The man made some of the most memorable Kirby characters (Dark Matter, Zero, Gooey, Adeline, all the animal friends), and then just disappeared 2002. How does that even happen?

We don’t know where he works, or if he’s even still alive. Definitely one of the more overlooked Nintendo mysteries.

Wait I’m really confused, this is just the roster for Smash Ultimate with nothing different about it.

File: 250px-768Golisopod.png (71 KB, 250x250)

File: Banjo_kazooie_pelea.png (560 KB, 874x880)

File: PhoenixWright.png (55 KB, 140x400)

Why in september? Well let's just say there will be a BIG news blowout and almost all this will be shown! Okay for real that's all!
That Golisopod would be neat, and that Phoenix is basically the only way I can see him working in Smash.

Hmm...

While I don't have access to DaybreakHorizon DaybreakHorizon 's records, I'd say, as examples... (and at the risk of giving the 4chan leakers fodder)

Captain Syrup (Wario), Mona (Wario), Tails (Sonic), Amy Rose (Sonic), Blaze (Sonic), Tifa Lockhart (Final Fantasy VII), Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII) (though the real off the wall FF7 pick is Genesis), Joker (Persona)

Some food for thought here, but let's consider something for a moment.

We got a surprise Smash announcement at the end of the March Direct, waited a few months and argued about who would be added and who wouldn't be, found out everybody was coming back (some characters missing for almost 20 years), and now we're already back to debating who else will be in. Not only did we get everybody back (which is a landmark accomplishment for the series by the way), but we got Ridley, a character a large portion of the fanbase had written off or stopped supporting.

Listen, I'm excited about who else will be in the game as much as the next person but we've got to take a second and appreciate this game for what it is at this point in time. Long time fans of the series have probably already freaked out a bit. I myself have been that person...honestly, I almost cried watching the reveal trailer at E3. I still watch the Direct over again to get myself re-hyped up.

There's nothing wrong with wanting more from this game, as I myself am excited at the potential newcomers for this game. However, this thread has kinda...overlooked the fact that EVERY SINGLE VETERAN IS BACK. It was pretty much like, "Oh that's cool...alright, move on!"

Dudes, this is HUGE for Smash in terms of characters. It's also a huge workload for the team.

Last night I was with friends and one of them suggested the prospect of there not being any other characters on the roster. While I disagreed with him, it made me think. There's already 65 characters...how far are we going to go until people are satisfied? Will the Smash fanbase EVER be satisfied with what they get? Sometimes I question it.

(skip to 18:40 for the beginning of the Smash portion)
This here is a video from the Nintendo New York store during the E3 event. Fans were allowed in to view the Direct among other fans. This is one of my favorite videos of all time, because at the very moment they were watching the Direct, I was at work trying to keep my hype in check. These fans freaking out shows what the series means to them. That video only featured KNOWN Smash characters. They cheered, and cheered LOUD when they saw their favorite characters. I internally cheered when I saw all my favorites, and those I hadn't expected.

Appreciate this for a moment. Every time I watch this, I get chills.
