Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

You know what? I think the Launch Star will be broken as an item. In that tourney that we saw, I saw :ultsheik: die at about 55% from getting launched upwards, and the Launch Star was near the ground.

Sakurai then realises we're spotting a pattern and deliberately showcases Cloud next week.
No, he immediately wakes up in the middle of the night right now to upload a new third party character reveal and says to himself "Got em".

You got me good Sakurai, got me good.

The Launch Star's knockback can potentially be adjusted so that it's not quite so strong against fighters with low damage.

Definitely not going to be as demonic as the Gust Bellows though.

"sakurai, sir, shouldnt we be working on the game?"

"not now! i'm scouring the internet to make sure no one is close to guessing what character I've put in the game!"

Yes it's been discussed here and means nothing. Anyone can edit IMDB. It's awful.

Is this just from amonst gamefaqs? And there's a really good one on the newcomer board, I just don't know if it's updated, checking now.

Also I love that Mimikyu is most requested Pokemon, if even by 1 lol.

Unique or bust. (But seriously, I'd ultimately accept Echo!Shadow)

I still don’t understand the massive Bandana Dee love, I’m surprised he is so popular, is he really that important to Kirby? Or is it just the idea of a spear moveset. Out of all the characters right now I can think of to be skewed by being potentially a forum only wanted character he comes to mind, but maybe I’m just out of touch lol

He was made playable and given a spear BECAUSE of his popularity so yeah

He's basically the forth main character in the Kirby Series, plus a spear.

I am not the go to person on this (I'm sure many others on this site would be way more helpful) but from my understanding he is very popular in Japan and is used heavily in their marketing. Like I've seen a few videos of him actually speaking and advertising games as the sole character in that advertisement. Once again others would probably know way more about his popularity over there.

Really at this point Sakurai not including him again wouldn't be him not recognizing his popularity but just genuinely feeling that he doesn't need to be added and that the Kirby series is fine with it's already represented characters. (Unless he adds someone like Dark Matter or Marx. Then he will definitely be showing bias lol).

He started off pretty uninteresting (just in my opinion) but had a small and passionate fanbase, who made their love of him known quite well. I remember being irritated by this at the time because he just seemed like a generic waddle dee who held a spear, and I didn't see any interesting aspects of him that made him a character.

However, in the years since then, the Kirby developers put more of an emphasis on him, and turned him much more into an actual character. I'd say he's much more wanted (and much more likely) than any other Kirby rep.

Would be awesome but at this point I’d like to see Vaati in any new game at all.
I’d honestly be happily surprised if Vaati even got a trophy. I’d just like to see him in 3D.

An assist trophy would be really awesome though.

He's the fourth main character, so yes, he is that important. None of the other possible Kirby characters are close to how important he is except for arguably Dark Matter if you high-ball it's influence (count Drawcia, Dark Crafter, etc instead of just Dark Nebula/Mind and the like) on the other Kirby bosses.

Yeah he always seemed super generic to me as well (although a spear character could make a fun moveset) but I’m not a huge Kirby fan so maybe he is interesting in the recent games, even if he is popular him being anywhere close to the K. Rool in a popularity is still bizarre to me. I’m probably underestimating the Kirby fan base, it’s probably huge since they make so many of them.

You just reminded me how amazing it would be for Dust: An Elysian Tail to come to the Switch, and how cool Dust and Fidget would be as a newcomer.

http://img11.deviantart.net/4fdb/i/2015/150/8/6/dust_to_dust___fanart_by_flying_pen-d8vctmr.png
If you’re dying to see Dust (without Fidget though) in a Smash-like, you can look up footage of him in Indie Game Battle... a game that was cancelled because the dev is terrible at relations with his third parties, but still has quite a few characters and stages for 5 bucks.

(Unless he adds someone like Dark Matter or Marx. Then he will definitely be showing bias lol).
Just saying, but, since Sakurai wasn’t the director of the Dark Matter based games IIRC, isn’t Dark Matter also hurt by theoretical bias? Correct me if I’m wrong.

You know, if nothing else, the lack of a reveal last night is good for one other thing: making sure fake 4chan leaks get more creative with their reveal dates.

Oh who am I kidding. They're just gonna congregate at an EVO reveal now. :p

No, you're absolutely correct, Shimomura developed all the Dark Matter trilogy games.

So can someone tell me what that Japanese stream was about? (The thing that would also show something related to Mario aces)

It was just a game showcase/tournament at the "Jump Victory Carnival" convention in Japan. People who played and won three times in a row were rewarded with a Switch charging stand.

It was a free-for-all tournament where they made random people from the crowd play eachother, same roster as in the E3 demo.

It was a 5 hour long stream where both Super Smash Bros Special and Mario Aces tournament was held at the same time.
Each game got 1 hour of main footage before switching to the other game for another hour, and back.

For Smash there were 4 people, and a chance to win 3 in a row, and you would earn a Switch handle stand?
And for Aces there were 1 vs 1, with the same prize if you won 3 rounds.

It was not a serious tournament as everyone could join inn. They had commentators who switched with the hour depending on the game.
It was fun for those interested in watching gameplay footage.

*AUX CALL PUSH SELECT*

Snake: Otacon, isn't that Rosalina, that lady who helped Mario save the princess a couple of times? Her star-shaped "buddy" is shooting giant rock candy at me!

Otacon: Those are actually Star Bits, Snake, but according to my research, apparently Star Bits actually taste like honey, believe it or not.

Snake: Who cares if they're edible, THEY HURT! Wait a minute, I just remembered, don't those little star guys call her "Mama?" What kind of mother forces her children to fight in Smash?

Otacon: *lowered voice* ...and what kind of father considers letting his 4 year-old son pilot a Metal Gear?

Snake: Huh? Did you say something?

Otacon: N-no, it's nothing... j-just focus on the battle.

Well, to get pedantic, it wasn't anyone anyone, like E3 you had to sign up in advance.
What would your reaction be if Shantae were to be a playable character?
"Neat!"

At this point in time I have no hope out for a Shantae reveal, or the idea of her being playable, except maybe DLC.

Still, if Shantae were to make the roster however;

I think she could be interesting, and I would like to try her out, as with all newcomers, but I do think there were better options, at least if this is were we get limited content, then I rather hope they focus on First Party Nintendo instead of third parties and indies ... So, I'd be a little bit dissapointed, but I'd also be glad for her fanbase, because she could be cool.

“That’s cool to see her in, it’ll be exciting to see more gameplay, and I’ll come over here to see people get excited about her now.”

I don’t really have an attachment to her series as I haven’t played any of her games, but I have watched speedruns of a few of her games and I know she has quite a few unique abilities, so there is potential there.
