I went to my first tournament in 6 months yesterday. Might be my last tournament ever actually. :C

I did pretty well though. I went all zelda and won teams (zelda/ y. link team) and got 5th/20 in singles. I lost to the same guy twice. He was a luigi player. I freaking hate that matchup so much. RAGE

Yeah Doc, Ganon, and Samus are all only semi-viable characters I guess. You can certainly win locals with them but you're probably not gonna win a regional or national with one of 'em.

Aside from that, zelda is not a useless character. I don't use her for every matchup like I used to but she does pretty well in some matchups.

He did try to fool us by saying there are only eight characters in the game.

And I largely agree with this statement. Yes, it is possible to be really good with low tier characters but it's much, much harder. It's pretty much impossible to win a regional tournament with a character that's not on his list. Ganon, Doc, and Samus are unlikely to win any regionals but still quite a bit more likely than the other characters below them on the tier list. IMO they are semi-viable, and the other characters that haven't been mentioned are not viable at all. (That doesn't mean that you can't do some serious damage with them or simply have fun using them however! I am a zelda main and although I think zelda is a bad character I still rep her ALL DAY)

Also I feel that it is necessary to add that (for my argument anyway) I'm referring to using these characters exclusively for the entire tournament. Axe and Taj would not do as well at tournaments using only pikachu and mewtwo. They will commonly bust out falco and marth for specific matchups or against specific opponents. the game...like life...is too vast and limitless to spend time calling things good and bad while deliberately limiting yourself because that's how you think you should win and or play the game.

... Not gonna lie, Lake. That was actually quite beautiful. It's something I'd say.

This be why you're one of my favorite Melee players. Not because you main Zelda (and rock it no doubt), but because you are a humble player and it's seemingly easy for you to find to point out to players like us that's it's not definitely all about playing those "10 viable characters" all the time.

Reason I play a character is because I like them aesthetically. It's how I've always been. Though, I've always had the bad luck of finding low tier characters aesthetically pleasing. So with all of that, mid and low tier characters just grew on me. I fell in love with trying to put in the effort of doing really well with a bad character. It gets people to turn heads and gets them to try and fathom the current mind set you have when playing a character with limited options. Zelda is definitely both of these things for me. I actually am brought great joy when I have limited options (smaller chances for me to become over zealous and screw up). If there was any other character in the game I'd pick up, it would definitely be Falco or Peach.

Falco, because DAYEM DAT TECH SKILL.
Peach, because she's been one of my most favorite Mario characters forever.

Probably Donkey Kong, also. I'ma huge fan of the DK series. Even dough he ain't top tiersauce.

BUT AS OF NOW (before I go back to trying to learn Peach) I'm going to stick with Zelda and really REALLY try to get her down to the best of my abilities.

Martheach is 60:40. No Marth realizes this: He has an up throw. Marth is good at juggling opponents. Peach is bad at descending. Combine the 2 and Peach gets *****. Marths stubbornly try to combo out of fthrow/dthrow when time and time again Peach can safely DI down/away to escape anything. They're so delusional, thinking they'll ever consistently get anything good out of it. Also, what's even less known is that Peach has terrible mobility. She can't get passes swords and guess what? Marth has a sword

I've mained her for years and I'll promote the triforce of wisdom 'til I die. I'll tattoo a picture of zelda on my first born child and make him/her take music lessons so that he/she will be able to play the ocarina at a young age.

The fact that zelda isn't the best character in the game just means that you're gonna have some uphill battles to fight. People don't choose to play as zelda because they think she's the strongest character on the roster; they choose her because they like her as a character or simply have fun playing as her. And it's not like she has any 0-100 matchups either. Just because she has a really hard time against some characters doesn't mean they can't be beaten.

going to most any low tier is easy once you understand the game, you can see what they really have to offer.

Disagree, I maintain that her match vs fox is hopeless so long as the fox is even remotely within your skill range. I know that I personally chose zelda because it's the only character i can use against players that are better than me and still expect to win some matches.

3. In regards to this whole limitation by low tier etc debate. We all know that certain character are better than other, common sense. Doesnt mean anything, how have characters progressed trough the tier list of the last years? By People deciding to main these characters and push boundries. This debate is pointless, people main certain characters because they want to simply. Everyone has their own opinion. Some feel they have their best chance to win with that character, some will strive to become the best with that character because they love that character(from other games mostly) no matter how bad that character is. Some what to prove that all characters are tournament viable. And I truly believe that ALL characters are viable, because if they truly weren't, why would anyone use them at a professional level, it really would be like, a bunch of top tiers running around with no variety. It would be bland. I main Fox because I love the speed and technical challenges to provides to me. I started as a Mario main because I wanted to, nothing more than that. Some people choose certain characters because of the style they wish to play. Like I said, I was a Mario main, then Marth. I now main Fox because I wanted to play Fast, technical and aggressive. But to who his own. We all have our reasoning for playing what characters we do.
