Rice isn't fattening at all and it is nutritious. In fact, things like bread and pasta are more fattening because they are refined carbohydrates as opposed to rice which is a complex carbohydrate. Its true, rice has no taste alone, but that's the point. Back in the day, things like meat were luxuries and weren't had often. Rice provided a cheap and plentiful way to fill up at a smaller cost. Similar to your potato. (given you don't add any sour cream etc to it). It's also beneficial this way because your diet should have way more grains than meat etc. I can see why people would think rice isn't nutritious without knowing anything about it but I seriously find it hilarious how you think rice is fattening LOL.

There may be a metabolic difference due to race and ethnic differences. Latinos eat a lot of rice too, but it seems that obesity is higher in Latin America than in East Asia. China had only 0-5% obesity in 2008:

Obesity is on the rise worldwide, but I don't think rice is to blame, considering how long it's been around, unless the processing is what's doing it. Carbohydrates are needed by the body for fuel, and that's why people eat grains in the first place. I know that there was a health fad in the U.S. a while ago to purge carbs and eat proteins. What I'm thinking is, for people who are already obese, rice and pasta might contribute to the problem. But for those who aren't, it probably won't.
