For chance, literally the only thing she had going for her is that Hitagi leaked her. Then Hitagi backpedaled. The fact that we all believed she had a chance is truly a testament to pessimism for DLC post Incineroar and Piranha Plant. Let’s look at her credentials. She’s a character from a Japanese only mobile game. Is she the most popular? I dunno, but she certainly isn’t the protagonist, and that alone would mean her chances aren’t great (then again, anything can change).

As for want, Hell will freeze over before I accept a character from a gacha mobile game in Smash. Especially one as obscure and inconsequential as this one. I would take her over Steve, but not much else.

The main reason Katalina gained prominece within speculation was because Hitagi, a leaker who Vergeben trusted and communicated with, said she was planned for DLC. Hitagi’s track-record isn’t very large, and he later claimed that this was misinfo and that Katalina wasn’t being planned, so we can’t use this as evidence. With that out of the way, let’s look at Kat from Granblue Rush proper. Katalina is an important character in the mobile game Granblue Fantasy, which has become very popular within Japan. Katalina herself is a very popular character. She has 4 variations within the game, and is the protagonist of an upcoming Granblue hack-n-slash by Platinum Games. It can’t be understated how big Granblue is. Despite only releasing in 2014, it was one of the first F2P gacha games to really make it big and inspired various other games in the genre such as the also mega-popular Fate GO. The game as of October 2018 has crossed 22 million downloads, all while being exclusive to Japan. The fact that Granblue is getting a PS4 hack-n-slash spin-off by Platinum should alone tell you that the game’s big. Nintendo also owns 5% stock in Cygames, the developers of Granblue, and has worked with the company to make Dragalia Lost, so the connections are there and licensing should be easy. With Nintendo aiming to draw people in with DLC, Katalina could make sense as an inclusion from a game that is undeniably huge in Japan, and could represent the ever-growing mobile sector of gaming. However, these are where Katalina’s drawbacks come in. Granblue as previously mentioned is a Japan-exclusive game, and thus Katalina would be a very strange inclusion if Nintendo is aiming for world-wide appeal with DLC, as she’s one of the few characters I think you can reasonably call a “literally who” when reffering to the West. Even Persona 5 managed to get over 2 million copies sold in the West, so worldwide appeal could still matter. Another problem is that in a press-release regarding Joker, SMT’s storied history with Nintendo was mentioned, showing that gaming history is still something considered for third parties. Granblue only began as a series in 2014, and is still very young, too young to have a super substantial impact on gaming or it’s history. While Bayonetta had the same issue, Granblue and Kat to my knowledge have yet to make an appearance on a Nintendo console yet. However, others who have played Granblue have said that it’s one of the les micro transactions reliant gacha games, being laxer with its currency and more generous, which very slightly helps with this problem. Katalina also has the potential for a really cool ice-based moveset, which we don’t have in smash apart from the Ice-Clombers. Ultimately though, I just hate Gacha games with micro transactions too much for me to really appreciate Katalina, especially compared to the other third-parties.

Granblue's really popular there, but that's about all you can say about it, and you can say the same thing about Fate and Artoria Pendragon. Her only apparent weapons are a sword and unapparent ice powers, and she's not even the character that people associate Granblue with (if they associate anyone at all.)

There's half a dozen third-party sword characters in line, so the only way I can see her getting in is if Nintendo railroads the process for the sake of a company they don't even have majority shares in.

As far as getting a mobile rep goes, this is a pretty bad choice. Heck, I can't think of any category where she's the most ideal candidate, and I doubt she's even the best Granblue character one could go for.

Chance: 10%. Being Japanese-only isn't enough of a deterrent alone. Especially if they want it in the West. It also helps that this is a very strong-going Gacha game that actually removes the microtransactions and has constantly gotten more good games, so it's pretty much made a mark on Japanese Gaming history. Thus, the chance of it is pretty low, but not that impossible.

Want: Hard to say. She looks pretty neat and I like the character designs. I never had a Gacha game, but I might try it if it comes overseas due to being pretty much free. I do similar games that are mostly rng to get items, so it sounds fun. 20%, maybe? Enough interesting, but not super interested by any means.

So, the reason she's even in the conversation was because of Hitagi's misinfo. I remember pretty clearly the day that came out and the entire general thread acted like the sky was falling and everything was awful, but that's just another day at the office for the Smash fandom I've learned. Of course, there's also the fact that Nintendo owns a small part of CyGames and that Granblue is massive, complete with Uematsu music and tons of updates and a fighting game and RPG both on the way. Still, it's not happening. No international appeal, no Nintendo connection, only the remotest chance of this happening.

During the days of the possible leak I went to my friend who loves Granblue and asked about her. She's his favorite. He sometimes sends me Granblue stuff now and it seems like a fun game with a nice art style and good music. Katalina herself actually seems like a really funny and cute character, and she uses ice magic and during one story event gets magically transformed into a tank called Katapillar. She seems like a thoroughly enjoyable character and the only reason she gets so much vitriol is because no one has actually played Granblue and something something gacha games are exploitative and blah blah blah my slots. If she was from an actual Nintendo game no one would be batting an eye.

That said, it's not like I want her in. I don't play Granblue. I don't have any connection to the character outside of what my friend says. I absolutely think she'd be fun to use and I think she's cute, but if I want to play as her in a videogame I'll go play that Platinum game starring her when it comes out, or the Granblue fighter. It's not happening and I don't want it to happen. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world by a long shot but it would be a letdown.

If DQ is getting a character, I'd rather see a different character than Erdrick. He just seems kind of boring to me. I feel like Slime is the perfect fit that would cause a lot more hype, and he's the icon of the series with a lot of moveset potential.

Just a quick update: I apologize for the joke that I made in Katalina's rating. I mean no ill will towards gay people, and no harm was intended with the joke. It was simply meant to poke fun at Hitagi's name because he was a fake leaker that later became old news. It was along the lines of inserting "crap" or something in a username (Example: Piranha Crap), and gay was the word that ended up working the best with Hitagi's name. It was not meant to be taken seriously, and to those who took offense to my joke, I am sorry for my actions and will not do it again.

Alright, Katalina. As many have said before me, the only reason she's really mentioned is because a leaker said she would be in, than did double take, claiming her info was for something else. Since then, most have walked away from the idea of her. Does she have any merits? A few, Cygames has worked with Nintendo in the past, but honestly? They'd choose Dragalia Lost before a Gacha Game only in Japan. What about the character herself? Well...

As far as I'm concerned, she doesn't even bring much to the Smash table, aside from representing Cygames, which again, Dragalia Lost could do a lot easier.

OK, yeah, it's unfair of me to rate her in want when I can't play her game of origin? But honestly, even if I had the ability to, I wouldn't. I'm not a fan of gaming on a phone, omitting the fact it's a gacha. Give me a Game Boy (Advance), DS, 3DS, or the Switch (obviously), I'll play till the cows come home. On a phone? That muddies things a bit. It becomes just another app cluttering your phone IMO. Pass.

Poor Miles Prower, you got screwed buddy. Knuckles became an assist before you, and to make matters worse, your spirit is a support. Not a primary, a support. The arguably 2nd or 3rd most important Sonic character certainly deserves better (arguably because Eggman is still in the mix). 8.67%

Don’t care about her, and look bland. Ice powers are nice, but i prefer the FE Heroes protagonist from the second book more.

Only Hitagi made her considered, and he scrapped the character in the end. She can join like any other character in gaming, but that’s about it.

Chance: 10% - Hitagi keeps his info about her in consideration, but he's been off-and-on about it happening and I don't know anymore, especially since he's he only reason people are talking about her. However, Cygames has worked with Nintendo so who knows (being honest here, the newer leaks and rumors would've made me drop her chances to 1-5%, if I didn't try to ignore them for this...).
