The reason given in the game is that she is on a Galactic Federation Frigate, she doesn't know that because she only intercepted a distress signal, the "baby's cry", a signal with the urgency of a baby crying

She being a bounty hunter, is independent of the Galactic Federation therefore has no business being on the Top Secret Frigate which Adam tells her when they first meet. Adam even tells her to leave.

She doesn't, and he tells her that unless she listens to him she is basically breaking the law. Which makes her no better then a space pirate in the GF eyes. They even allude to that at the end of the game with her transporting "illegal goods" the baby metroid. And basically arrest her until Anthony steps in saying she was apart of Adam's team. Otherwise they would have.

Irregardless she does end up not listening to Adam's commands anyways when she uses the screw attack unauthorized. That in it of itself should show she is independently strong and not someone to be "ordered around"

Irregardless I'm not trying to convince you guys the game is good. I trying to strike down some of the ridiculous misconceptions about the game that are not fair critisms at all.
I'm not talking about her reasons for wanting to listen to the guy. I'M talking about why the **** I should have to go through a hazardous heat-filled environment, constantly losing health and on the brink of dying, before reaching the level boss and THEN having the Varia Suit authorized. Hence my parachute analogy. Last I checked, soldiers can disobey a suicidal order from a commanding officer, in this case, putting the Varia suit on so Samus doesn't get fried travelling in Norfair-like environments. It ridiculous no matter how much you try to defend it, which why I would rather prefer it where all your equipment is taken away from you/destroyed in beginning and having to find them again, rather than waiting for when it's most convenient to finally activate them.

I thought FF13's battle system was pretty interesting. I took it as an attempt to take away the micro choices in battles and replace 'em with Macro ones.
Instead of: you attack this, you heal that, you tuant this, etc.
It's: I need to heal. Change Paradigm. I need to control mobs. Change paradigm. I need DAMAGE. Change paradigm.

A current trend in games is to streamline the experience. Strip away meaningless choices/interactions.

I see Neko watched the Western RPG vs JRPG episode.
Also, that first Metroid rant is my favorite one. I'm a new fan to Metroid, and have been playing every single one back to back, and just got into Metroid Prime after playing through all of the portable and pre-GC games.

I'm looking forward to Other M the most because I just want to see how hard it failed in comparison. Prime has been fan-****ing-tastic.

FF13's battle system has been my favorite experience as far as RPGs go. About the only good part of that game though.:applejack:

I put very little merit in Samus' self-authorization because it comes so late into the game. Nothing about that action expresses any real independence considering that he's not present and therefore leaves her with little choice in the first place. This rings especially true when Adam shows up later and once again reasserts dominance over Samus before stealing her agency in the plot completely.

I could go on and on about how Samus and Adam both underwent hideous amounts of character assassination but again I'll just mention Korval's very detailed essay instead because it expresses this with substantial amounts of evidence.

If you're new a fan of Metroid Prime, you might be interested in Miles' 100% speedrun with commentary after your first playthrough; there are a lot of really cool tricks to be utilized that aren't apparent when playing the game.

I just wanted to stop in and say Metroid Prime is amazing. Definitely my favorite game of all time, unless you count MP Trilogy.

Super and Prime 1 and 2 are my favorite Metroid games. I hated getting swarmed by Fission Metroids in the Impact Crater(IIRC), in Metroid Prime 1, though. I haven't played Prime 3 yet, but I don't like the fact that I can't play the game with the standard GC controls that Metroid Prime 1 and 2 had. =(

I'm a huge fanboy of Super Metroid. imo, one of the best video games ever.

Metroid Prime is fantastic but I'd put SM over it.

The 3rd one is way better than the 2nd one. 1 > 3 > 2

You get used to it with the Wiimote, it's actually pretty well made.

My favorite experience has actually been Zero Mission so far, but Super and Metroid 2 were both fun as hell for me too.

Fusion was fantastic as well. :applejack:

My morbid curiosity has been capped to the point where I played Other M.... for an hour.

So far it's a game that tries really hard to be amazing, but there's a lot of "It would be nice if X was Y instead of Z" even before I started the game.

Here's some of those:

- Would be nice if I could use the Nunchuk's analog stick for 3d movement instead of the D-Pad like early PS1 games
- Would be nice if half of Samus's dialogue so far wasn't redundant since I already figured out what's going by what's going on the screen
- Would be nice if the flashbacks were to tell the stories themselves like in FFX and whatnot instead of all explanation and dialogue being drowned out by Samus' oft redundant monologuing
-Would be nice if I can use the non super destructive powers. I understand forbidding things like the Super Missles, Power Bombs, and Hyper Beam since those things would total the station easily in the damaged state it's in, but it's bothersome to not be able to interact with most of the areas since Samus isn't authorized to use a bomb or regular missles.
- Would be nice if I had the Nunchuk to also serve as a smoother way to switch between first and third person.

There's more, but those are the big ones.

I'm definitely continuing later on to see where the rabbit hole goes, since I like what it's trying to do.

Whoa some love for 2 in here. Don't see that often. Despite its immediate issues, Fusion uses its linearity to an amazing extent. I don't think there's any Metroid that tops it in atmosphere.

I can't remember what sector it was in, but when you fall through the floor of this jungle area in Fusion and SA-X is just sitting there waiting for you, I flipped my ****. I heard the music and the footsteps and waited for her to leave, and she never did, so I took a step closer and the floor collapsed.

I ran like a *****.

Too bad SA-X made for a pretty underwhelming boss fight.

Metroid 2 was just fun because of the music and sound effects.

This stupid song made me jump the first time I heard it in-game, and it made me hate having to run up to Metroids to fight them, because otherwise they just sit and wait for you to get close enough. Omegas were annoying as **** too. :applejack:

Has anyone seen the emulator remake someone is making of Return of Samus?

The guy developing it is using Zero Mission's sprite style for it. It looks pretty sharp so far.

AM2R looks (and plays) fantastic so far. Doc's put a lot of effort into building the atmosphere of the game as well as breathing new life into areas that were somewhat hard to distinguish in the original. The controls are smooth as ever, taking ZM's rock solid control scheme and blending it with Super's looser elements. I can't wait for the finished product.

@Apple, the power shutdown and infestation of TRO is probably Fusion's best moment. It completely undermines the player's expectations in regards to SA-X which is what makes it so frightening. And the thing doesn't joke around in trying the kill you; it deals stupid amounts of damage.

Right now, I think Metroid needs to just go back to a 2D perspective. The Prime series has a nice little Trilogy already, and we don't want to wear down the 3D formula to where it gets stale. Getting back to the basics after a hiatus really is what some games need. The 3DS has more than enough power to give a great Metroid game. Get Retro Studios on the job and you got the formula for greatness.

I gotta try that Metroid 2 remake though. Even Retro said they felt inspired by it.

Actually, I watched that a long time ago and wasnt even on my mind when I started talking about this.

I'm just naturally a huge JRPG enthusiast. And is my favorite genre, more so than fighters.

My ideal game is a JRPG lol.

I'd love to see an RPG with Sonic in it

Battle Options:
1. Spin Attack
2. Run away (Spin away)
3. Guard (Spin in place)
4. Consumable/Heal
5. Special (Super Spin)
6. Swap Party Members (Spins above and behind them)

I don't know how to fix that problem exactly, but you could just use USB loading from now on if it's something that you can't exactly fix.

From what I hear, the game is not half bad.
You heard right. Game is pretty damned good. It's a RPG combined with Elite Beat Agents for special attacks with Sonic characters and a story that isn't completely crap. Knuckles is arguably the strongest character in the game which makes it even better as far as I'm concerned.

When you have tried in the past did you have the correct IOSes installed?
Anybody know if Smashboards has changed the stance on posting how-to stuff on getting USB loading to work?
Then again, you would probably receive a far better/easier to understand/more in depth tutorials on how to do it from somewhere like GBAtemp.

i have no idea, i think the lens just went bad on me, other than that, i'd much rather have someone here tell me how, since i just use it to play PM and melee, again if you know of any way i would really appreciate it, i have to get brawl running again before PM 3.0 comes out:sadeyes:

With Sonic in it.
I've actually written up a bunch of stuff/concepts/papers on a Sonic platformer with RPG elements. The biggest draw to the game was that every single ability from every Sonic game is available in the game to customize your character with, but what abilities you could equip equip and use are based upon the number of chaos emeralds you've collected which effectively act as ability points for your character. With 14 emeralds, you'd have 14 points to use from and the various abilities would require different amounts of points to equip.

From what I hear, the game is not half bad.
You hear wrong. That game is not good and is disappointing, especially since BioWare worked on this game.

The dialog choices are meaningless and doesn't even branch the story for even a second.
The story was fine up until like chapter 4 when they leave mobius, then it just get's really stupid, really un-sonic. stupid sci-fi bull**** lol.
The battle system / character system is pretty easy to master and there isnt much depth to it either.
things like the combination POW attacks, chao, and...cream also made the game anything but difficult. spam pow attacks, heal HP and PP with cream and suppliment PP restoration with items, while keeping cream alive and saving revive items for her.
The Chao system is essentially random and requires you to trade chao with other people to really get the full effect/benefit of the chao system.
the special attack mechanic is really mundane, not well executed, and seems really forced.
I also don't care for the art direction.

And please don't even get me started on the sound. they're midi based AND they're poorly used. I don't need to hear underwater sound effects as a part of the POW move stylus mini game. I don't want to hear me damaging an enemy giving me the sound of sonic losing his shield. this forced throwback/reference **** is just dumb.

I don't particularly care for the music either but DS speakers rarely do sound tracks justice. (PSZ OST pls)

This game had potential, especially since it was being handle by ****ing BioWare,(mass effect Kreygasm), and i was EXTREMELY looking forward to this game as an RPG enthusiast and a Sonic fanboy, so I was seriously let down by the overall quality of the game and the lack of polish.

You could say, "Well it's a sonic game. maybe it wasn't targeted towards you."

You COULD say that, but the game isn't really kid friendly lol. The game difficulty curve isnt nice to beginners as you had to make intelligent use of pow attacks and combined pow attacks to overcome enemies. i can easily see kids getting frustrated at a game like this, especially if they can't get the hang of the games mechanics. it's pretty clear the game is more suited for teens despite the esrb rating.

man this game was just wasted potential lol.
