I think Premium memberships are a bad idea because it's rewarding people who have money to spend and nothing else.

The idea of donating to the site is good, but the rewards wont do anything positive to the site. It will encourage arrogant people, and reward them with power, that will make the site less fun for people who aren't premium members. Which will make the site less approachable for new members. Ultimately making it less enjoyable for everybody.

Wait, do you mean that getting a Premium account turns you into an a**hole?

People will be arrogant anyway. Whilst (I hope) other people will work to dispel that (As they do now. (A few members come to mind who make this place a lot more welcoming than what it would be without them).

BUT, I get what you're saying. It's a valid point.

Not at all.

I suppose i should rephrase my argument against premium memberships. The idea is good, but some of the perks of it are ridiculous. The ability to change other peoples anythings (specifically user name color) is absolutely insane. I am all for supporting the site, but if it affects other members it shouldn't happen, that just isn't fair.

If premium memberships allow valid name changes. Ex, ColinJF to Colin, thats a legit name change.
But changing your name to Ex, Sir Spams a Lot, benefits nobody on the forum.

Not to mention people with premium memberships will feel superior to people without premium memberships. Its inevitable. And in most cases that superiority isn't justified.

My beautiful metaphor for the entire thing is that premium memberships is the poor mans back room.

Also i am only a commie because of Mother Russia haha.

Premium Membership has been around before, you can't really argue against people feeling superior. I mean, it's a smash website based on tournaments. Do you know how many people here have way too big egos for absolutely nothing?

The answer is all of them.

True enough, but that doesn't mean that the website needs to encourage posters having big egos. If anything, i would think the site would be trying to diminish it.

I'm pretty sure that if they don't want their name that colour it's not going to be an enforced change because person X payed money.

It's not supposed to benefit everyone. Changing your name from ColinJF to Colin doesn't benefit everyone on the forum. If I wanted to change my name to Dragonfires9, why can't I?

Who cares if they feel superior? It doesn't make them any less immune to the forum rules. Just like life if someone wants to buy a fancy new car, if they're going to be breaking rules, they'll still get the same punishment, wether it's driving through red lights or flaming people.

My beautiful metaphor for the entire thing is that premium memberships is the poor mans back room.
If you were a broomer I could partly understand that sort of comment, not that I'd agree with it, but sounds more like you don't want people to have things that you don't want.

Fair enough with the first two points.

However, people feeling superior will lead to arrogance, even if they obey the forum rules, which will make the forum less approachable for new members. And that will hurt the community, because arrogance isn't going to help anybody. We want to present ourselves as a friendly community.

Also, of course i don't want people to have the things i don't want. That is the purpose of a poll after all. I am not going to vote in a poll so everybody else can have what I don't want, thats just foolish.

You think premium will make people arrogant? Go hang out in the brawl rooms for a while. Read some of M2K's posts. Being able to have a new colour won't do ANYTHING anywhere NEAR as "arrogant" as people already act.

I have seen the brawl rooms, and i know the posters are extremely arrogant. And i agree with you, it wont make people nearly as arrogant as they already are, but it will make them more arrogant. And even that little bit of arrogance should be prevented. You can not stop people from being cocky by nature, but you can try to limit it. Allowing people to buy status is encouraging arrogance.

I'm also against both the color changes and the name change perks. However, this is still very tentative, so any feedback we get is helpful for us to decide what perks are most appealing to members.

The premium membership plan isn't meant to give "status" that can be wielded over other users. Remember, at 5-15 bucks, these aren't going to be expensive. Anyone who wants to try and use it as a status symbol is probably going to be ignored. The perks are meant to help people customize their forum persona just a little further, and give them more utilitarian benefits (@smashboards.com e-mail, larger pm inbox).

Keep in mind that all of the subscription money eventually goes back to players in the form of bigger and better tournaments, so it's certainly not a matter of "supporting Smashboards." We don't keep the money.

Mic128, I agree with you completely lol. Premeium accounts would be solely for the stict personal and entertainment value of the purchaser, and it wouldnt change they way they act on smashboards. To: others - If you don't want premium memberships for whatever reason, fine, bur why would you go out of your way to try and stop it from people that DO want it? What do you benefit?

Oh and to Amorasaki, I also agree with you. For premiums, the purchaser should be able to change only things that pertain to him/her. That way, someone who loggs in wont get pissed off because some premium user changer their color or something like that. I know I would get a little upset. Also, even If the demand for premium isn't high enough, and you guys decide not to put the feature into effect, I still would highly reccomend always having the change name option for 2.50 available for users. Some of us (like me) made a grave error a few years ago picking our name when we signed up, and we don't want to loose our posts and sign-up date by creating a new name.

I have no idea why you think this. People are going to become arrogant because they get a little symbol in their postbit, can change their name, and hold more PMs? Nothing is going to change, at all.

Besides, we've had premium membership before. There was absolutely no problem with "arrogance" of any kind.

First of all, I'm going to make one big recommendation:

For the color-changing thing, set up a system so you get a notification that says "*NAME* has offered to change your name. Do you accept?" or something to that effect. Then if you accept, your color is changed. Either that or your color is changed and you can switch usergroups to change it back or something. It needs to be changed because waaaay too many people are like "Premium Membership? Hell no, they can change COLORS!!!" If I got a hot pink name I think that would be pretty cool...granted it would be slightly annoying, but it's not that big of a deal. Not enough to eliminate this entire system over it, anyways.

As for the arrogance thing, why would that happen? I'm sure I would jokingly brag to people, like in a joke argument or something I might say "I'm better because I have *insert feature here* =P" but I wouldn't mean it seriously, my demeanor would not change. As has been said, PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP USED TO EXIST. I ran into a few people who had it and they were normal, nice people.

Not to mention, if people actually DO gain arrogance because they have Premium Membership, they'll get their ***es flamed off the boards. Regular members aren't going to put up with crap like that.

There are always going to be idiots. Take Maxfire, for example. He was an idiot, he thought he had knowledge that he was clearly lacking. Did the boards suffer? Were we all forced to sit there, horrified as he was arrogant? No, we laughed at him until he kept on going to ***** and moan and got himself banned, and now he's a meme.

If you don't have enough faith in the community to put a stop to that if it even starts, then I'm not sure why you're here.

OK all the mods are going to think of ways that this idea is bad, but frankly I don't care.

I think that every user should get a Custom title once they reach Smash Journeyman (100 posts).

This benchmark for posts shows that a user goes on here fairly often and is fairly devoted to the site.

I mean now only certain people have Custom titles, I understand that mods get them, and then of course their are the ones for certain user groups, such as Debaters and TO's. But then some users just get them because mods give them custom titles.

I'm not gonna lie, yeah, I want one, yeah, I'm jealous of the random people who have them, and I just hope people will think about what I have to say.

Thanks for reading.

100 posts doesn't show jack****. You can get 100 posts in 3 days easy then never come back again. No one NEEDS custom titles. The point of SWF isn't so people can see how clever you can make your title.

It's a perk. Moderators get them because they have to put up with *****ing from people and have other **** they have to do, so they get a little something back in return.

Would only premium people get the reputation system or would it come back for everyone?

If they did implement that, S.O.L.I.D., 100 posts should NOT be the qualification. Looking on these boards, you will notice that most semi-active members get 100 posts in rather short order. 1,000 is the lowest I'd start that; again, IF it were implemented.

Post count isn't a good idea to base it on anyways. Nobody really cares all that much about post count now...I mean, there's n00b/Child/Journeyman/Apprentice/Lord/Master, but beyond that it doesn't count for much. Now, if there were a Custom Title in reach? Intelligence would probably die. A lot of people will post as much as they possibly can to get to the ability to create their own title. In fact, the more unreachable it is the worse it would be. But if it's too reachable then custom titles aren't special anymore and...whatnot. And from reading posts in this thread, I take it even with Premium Membership the titles would have to have a close eye kept on them. Shuffling through thousands of custom titles is hardly desirable on the mods' part.

To be honest, there is no easy way to implement it into the normal course of the boards. With post count, it'd either be too small, eliminating its exclusivity, or too large, encouraging too much spam. There's already a custom title for being a moderator, and then various ones handed out. Premium Membership would allow the feature for anyone willing to pay a small sum of cash.

And if Premium Member is brought back, I think it's one of the most desirable things (aside from name changes). That used to be custom avatars, but now that everyone can have one it's probably custom titles. So if Premium Membership is brought back it's uneconomical to add other ways to get Custom Titles.

kr3wman, it would only come back for Premium Members.

Naa, moderators don't have access to the Admin cp. We can't edit members.

Anyway, whenever you begin a forum, custom titles for regular members and even moderators is disabled. It is an option for administrators to enable it. Besides, didn't you say you'd buy the premium anyway? :) Custom titles are just a small part of the perks.

Custom avatars were never an option before, and now they are. Who knows.

100 is way to low, I think 1,500 is a better level.

I can see why you would want to get a premium membership for no ads, name changes, bigger PM box, etc. But the things like custom titles and embedding videos and so basic you wouldn't need to pay for them. IMO, they should be used by all members. Ultimately, I don't care for premium memberships. I'll probably never get one.

I'd def buy premium memberships. I've already got the name I want, but once I get enough free time to start posting frequently, I may take interest in a custom title.

I don't understand everyone's infatuation with custom title. You aren't on SWF to show how clever/funny you can make your name or your title. You aren't entitled to it, which is how you guys are making it seem. It is a cool perk to have for those that are willing to give back to the smash community, the ultimate goal of premium memberships.

Besides, do you realize how many custom titles we would have of the same thing everytime a new fad comes out (Thinks of Mods with On a Boat) :urg:

Regardless, no one is entitled to a custom title or a name change. Just take it as a perk for giving back to the smash community.
