It's x2. That's why I'm making any kind of big deal about this at all.

Hell, Sceptile after unburden outpaces adamant Dorry. With no Speed EVs.

Wow, really? At x2, it can outspeed near anything really. The only thing it'd have to worry about then would be priority users, like Scizor or Weavile.

I don't like Unova but all the other names are fine.

Way to screw it all up, Game Freak. I'm really disappointed. It's not that I don't like the names, but they could have been so much better.

Wow. Interesting names, I guess. But why "Unova"? What the hell?! They've been going with the Japanese names for all the other regions, so what's wrong with going with "Isshu"? I mean, I guess it could be worse, but still... "Wotter" is starting to sound real good about now.

Maybe we'll get used to the names over time, like everything else. XD

I don't care for the names very much since there's a nickname function we all can use. Unova though... why'd they change the region name?

I like all the names, to be honest. Oshawott sounds better than it looks, and "Tepig" comes from "tepid," or "lukewarm." And "Snivy" fits Tsutaaja quite well.

Isshu may have been changed because it sounds like "issue," and it's fairly meaningful anyway.

Potentially union or unum (Latin for one) combined with nova, Latin for new.

It keeps Isshu's meaning while making it more relatable.

Snivy and Unova are good; Oshawatt and Tepig sound ridiculous. Especially Tepig.

I think teh pig's English name of Tepig is...mediocre at best. As some of the people in here already stated, it's not that the English translations for their names are particularily bad, it's that they're disappointing and had so much more potential.

I agree. Personally, I don't think the translators are putting any effort anymore. Maybe they've just given up with trying to be creative... though, I will admit that I kind of like "Snivy". XD

P.S. Interesting change in avatar, though I liked your last one: it was more colorful. XD

Snivy seems okay, and a name it will take a while for me to get used to. Likewise with Unova, especially with the supposed theory behind the naming (I still like Isshu). Tepig and Oshawatt...on the other hand. I'm extremely disappointed in Oshawatt. Like. Just going by the English translated name I'm thinking of an Electric-type Pokemon (watts), not a Water-type. Ehh.

This avatar matches color more. :p

Yeah, I agree with Oshawott definitely. That is clearly a sign of the lack of thought on NOA's part. I'm really hoping the names for the rest of the Pokémon can help redeem what we've just seen so far. Also, I agree that "Isshu" is far better than "Unova". "Unova" sounds okay to be fair, but I still think they should have kept with the tradition of keeping the Japanese names. I know Isshu is supposed to be America, but do we need to "Americanize" the name for the English version to make that kind of point? Oh well.

Also, touché on the avatar color (or lack thereof) matching. XD

i suppose that since its based off the US instead of japan that they would change the names. all the other regions were based of certain places in japan. Unova is not though.

I don't get why people are so quick to say that 'Tepig' is a boring, lame, dumb, name. Honestly, when you look at some other stuff, they all follow the same pattern.
Char + Salamander = Charmander
Cinder + Quil = Cyndaquil
Torch + Chick = Torchic
Chimpanzee + Char = Chimchar

I guarantee that if the gen order was somehow reversed, people would rage at these names instead.

Tepid also means "characterized by a lack of force or enthusiasm", which seems to contradict the Pokemon's character.

I'm mostly bothered by how awkward the name sounds and how short it is, but I'm sure that will go away after a while.

Ocean + Shell + Water.
↑ That's pretty much what I was gonna say. But dont forget "otter" from the "wOTT" part.
Yep. Kofu said that earlier.
Anyone have a guess as to what Oshawatt derives from, aside from the fairly obvious "wotter" piece?
Why do you spell it as "OshaWATT" when it's actually "OshaWOTT"? Just wondering. :roll:

._. *Shudders*

Do they seem to forget yin and yang are actual terms that most Americans understand and are aware of? Deep Black? Vast White? Really?

This is definitely much more depressing news than the starter names, in my opinion.

What?! Aww, I liked the Black Ying and White Yang classifications. Deep Black and Vast White isn't that bad, in my opinion. Regardless, I very much prefer the former, as they sounded cooler. :\

Tepig?
WhateverWotter'sNewNameIs?
Snivy?
Unova?

God, I hate them all bar Snivy. I guess it makes sense for Smugleaf it being Snide + Ivy and stuff

Though Wotter's new name, Unova, and Tepig? Jebus Christ GF, wtf have you done tto them? You should've just gone with the fan favorites of Smugleaf, Pignition/Baycon/w/e, and Wotter

Those were such cool names and if you actually listened to our pleas, it would've made us all much happier

Unova.... I guess it makes sense on why they'd "Americanize" it, but that is still a pretty crappy name, no matter how much sense it makes imo. They shoulda just gave it a little more thought or something instead of giving us this bombshell of a name

Tsutaaja = Snivy
Pokabu = Tepig
Mijumaru = Oshawott
Isshu = Unova (!)

Go crazy.
Snivy is cool, tepig is meh, and oshawatt... lol...

And they better give Zuruggu and Zuruzukin the most bad*** names imaginable.

I like how everyone keeps on spelling it Oshawatt. You'd think the Wott part would be easy to remember given the fact that he's been Wotter for a few months now.

I've seen a rumor that said that they might cut N's backstory and part of the Yin/Yang stuff out. Honestly, I liked the idea of a not-so-childish Pokemon story. God, Nintendo. Stop thinking that every child is some innocent pure being that shouldn't be subjected to anything even remotely bad, since it's not true.

I think that's bull.
Only thing they changed is the Yin and Yang in the description of them. The names are still contrasting. I can't see them cutting it, and it's not like the concept of comparing two opposite forces is new. See, uh, every other story in the world.

If they cut N's backstory out I will rage.

The only reason I can think of changing the Yin and Yang dichotomy is because it labels one of the Pokémon as more "evil" and the other as more "benevolent."

Well, I can't lie, i'm dissapointed with all of it. The names sound too cheesy for their own good, I still don't know why they changed it from Isshu to Unova, and why Reshiram and Zekrom arn't yin and yang. Obviously i'll get over it (I didn't like the starters at first) but it doesn't mean i'll personally like it.

I don't get why people are so quick to say that 'Tepig' is a boring, lame, dumb, name. Honestly, when you look at some other stuff, they all follow the same pattern.

I can agree to that, both on the fact the names arn't that original and that people tend to immediatly rage over new material (sadly I tend to fit that bandwagon as well) but my point it up to this point they all sounded like actual pokemon. Even with the little effort in the names I never once doubted why they were named as such. There just seems to be something...missing, with these guys. I'm pretty sure that I can get better names for these guys from my friends and not, from what I assume, is three year olds playing with alphabet blocks. This generation, however makes me nervous about the upcoming pokemon. Will they succumb to the same fate of terrible names? I hope not.

Shell+Water+Otter+Lancelot because Mijumaru is a warrior in training.
If you think like this, lack of thoughts by NoA? Hell no.

Lancelot? Warrior in training for what? Become quadruple?

Lickylicky isn't the best of names but to be fair I can't think of a better, unlike these 2 (Snivy's fine).

I wonder what Shandera and Roobushin will become. And the mole, though I think it might have something to do with drills and bulldozers.

What weapons use knights other than the sword? The lance?
What has Daikenki on his head?

Hmm that seems plausible, but it almost seems too smart for NoA, and that hasn't convinced me it isn't just Water + Otter.

I can see the water starters names now:

Oshawott (Ocean+Shell+Water+Otter)

Oshamurai (Ocean+Shell+Samurai)

Woalga (Water+Otter+Dialga)
