I have never held principles or morals against playing a specific character and I never will [unless it's in the ruleset, then that's cheating], and your assumption that I have such a jaded view of the CSS is laughable.

Effort in the context of this game means doing everything I possibly can to win the game - if my skill level with my main is inadequate, I turn to a secondary, and if that falls flat too, any tertiary I may have, because I already know my regular characters won't cut it (and this had been made rather apparent to me). It turns out my tertiary (almost fully unplayed and have put no actual practice into) was sufficient to handle the challenge. That surprised me, so I figured I'd mention it here.

Don't confuse anything, I didn't go and put time into MK and watch it pay off - I'm saying I crossed some threshold where all of a sudden I understood ... something... to play MK intuitively, rather than by having to learn the character beforehand. And in that case, my intelligence in choosing the right character helped make up for skill deficits (much as in Melee, my Link can beat someone who knows the Falco MU but doesn't understand Link at all, or how someone can beat my Pikachu but can't handle my Falco in Brawl [which nearly happened earlier in bracket, although I ended up switching anyway to be safe and won that game too]).

And I can't just magically get better at stuff mid-match - I can adapt, but all my adaption was insufficient except when I picked out MK..

it's almost not fun, just..... cruel.

That's child abuse and assault is illegal. The ruleset says MK is legal and there is no harm done to others by playing a video game character. You clearly don't know much of anything if you think that analogy makes any sense in any context where MK is legal according to the ruleset.

It's easier to jest because some of us legitimately don't care, and it's fun to mess with each other. Idk, over here on the EC we give each other **** aaaall the time and mean nothing by it, so my bad if it came off as mean.

Apologizing to you Thor, because it sounds like you're actually upset and really think I was coming at you on some meanspirited ****. In the future, I'll save the joking around for people who aren't offended by it. /shrug

Iunno, I don't think Kaylo meant anything ill by it, but it was a comment directed at someone who was proud of an accomplishment, to downplay the accomplishment. Celebrate wins as a family. Even if it's minor. Sharing love is more fun than sharing apathy. Little victories build momentum into larger victories. If Thor was shy, that's a sure fire way to alienate a productive member of the scene.

And that definitely goes for Foghat.


And extend that beyond simple one off things! The most annoying thing about the Smash community compared to other fighting games is the lack of celebration. So many people approach this game with a defeatist attitude. The competitive Smash scene far too often loses sight of the fun in Smash. I can't count the number of sets I've seen where a tightly contested match ends and nobody hugs or hypes up the loser. People just watch silently and nod their heads after a game and all turn away at the same time. Be happy for the game!

I'll be the first to admit I've teased Thor. But very few people have been completely up front with him about it. Months back now, I used to give him terrible **** and even said something along the lines of him being a little kid who has a lot of growing up to do.

But I'm referring directly to the Metaknight thing. I try to never downplay accomplishments, because I've always hated that around me. I love when people around me succeed, but I'm terrible at showing it so I make a concerted effort. I'm a smart-ass, I do overreach from time to time. But I'm not going to shy away from that. I reach out to everyone I offend to make sure they know it isn't intended, and so they know where I'm coming from.

I'm simply trying to reach out and let you know you're a leader of this group. Leaders have higher expectations on them, fair or not. People here follow your comments quite fervently. At the end of the day, I'm irrelevant here. I don't even truly play Smash, I suck at it. I just like most of the people in this group, Thor included.

We crack these jokes to bring us closer together, not further apart. Humor binds us. Laughing at ourselves helps keep us real, and we don't mean any harm by it. It's the same principle as Halloween - a bunch of terrible things that instill negative feelings turned into a celebration with candy and faux sexy nurses. We just lean more to trick than treat.

And on the flip side of all this, to the fam, Thor's a serious man in an unserious land, but he's also a driven young 'chu, and he's got both promise and heart going for him.
