Ok fine

Top tier
Falco / Fox / Sheik / Puff / Marth

High tier
Peach / Falcon
Ice Climbers

Mid tier
Doc / Pikachu / Samus / Ganon / Mario / Luigi

Low tier
Donkey Kong / Link / Zelda / Young Link / Roy / Yoshi / Game & Watch / Mewtwo
Ness / Pichu / Kirby / Bowser

Notes:

ICs are high tier with wobbling, otherwise mid.

Doc sucks, as does Pika and everyone else in that group.

Not sure about the competitive viability of Young Link, Yoshi, and various other characters as a secondary but this list is for solo play so they get low tier status because they suck.

Top 5 characters are basically even in terms of power. I think Fox might be 3rd or 4th but it's hard to tell since almost everyone is bad with him.

At what point in the list do you think the characters become so bad that it is not feasible for the best player to win tournaments? Obviously a bit of circular logic there because you can't call someone the best if they can't win with their main, but you know what I mean. I'm looking for a feels answer.

from my own observation, the cutoff seems to be between pikachu/samus

pikachu hasn't won a major in a while but axe has gotten damn close to beating pp, so i think it's possible

but samus... i can't see it

I guess I'm an optimist because I could see everyone as low as Luigi pulling it off. Then again, I constantly get stomped by Vist at locals, so I'm pretty biased. I also don't really have any good idea what those characters have to do to beat top tiers.

I don't see any of mid tier winning a big tournament going ONLY that character, but with that being said, they are all viable with another character or two to support them in bad matchups.

I would agree that Pikachu and Doc are on a different level than the others though.

What is the cutoff for a tournament to be considered 'Big'?

Surely Apex and Genesis sized tournaments fit this title.
What about ROM sized?
What about BEAST or Zenith?

The point is the larger the tournament is, the less likely anyone is going to win it with a solo character. Yet, people still argue that X character isn't good enough to win a big tournament when it isn't even relevant because no solo character is winning large tournaments anymore.

It would be interesting if we could gather the data from 'large' tournaments in the past 4 years or so and see how many solo characters won them.

I guess that's a good point. PP and Armada have definitely been the closest to winning with just one character obviously, but I guess I will add the stipulation that they are allowed a secondary for just 1 matchup.

Ganon and Samus can win ROM sized tourney for sure.. I almost did 3 times. =( When you get Top 5 at those, its a pretty good indication thats its possible.

But the biggest tournament? Ugh man... idk. lol Ill let you know when i get 5th at those.

As the meta-game grows, I see it becoming less and less likely.
Even though as time progresses we're only seeing more and more low-tier specialists doing work? More characters' metagames are being devoloped, Young Link and Yoshi are examples of characters who only recently are being taken to new levels of play. Why do you think diversity is going to be shrinking rather than growing?

So KK you saying that Ganon is one of the characters that is pretty done being pushed further? Sort of makes sense to me honestly. You think we'll see Ganon be usurped by lower tier chars soon?

No I dont believe so, even if those characters with untapped potential actually do find new stuff then all you have to do is adapt to that. Unless it's game breaking, the matchups wont really change.

He's not going to go lower than mid. He's just limited by his physics and slow attacks.

By virtue of how hard he hits versus how fast he is, he can't be awful. But he's kind of stuck because his lack of a strong ground game really hinders him when he's so limited in the air (despite his good aerials).

With Ganon all you need is like 4 hits to take a life, that wont ever change. The death counter!

Ganon will always have the power to change the momentum in a few hits, thats his biggest strength.. sure it might be hard to land hits but when you do you can definitely make your opponents scared.

btw this is true talk, Ganon's burst strength will always be the one thing that keeps him relevant (and the one thing that keeps me playing him). He doesn't combo, he destroys

To me the hardest to place are Doc and Pikachu. They both have a player doing amazing things with them but if a tier list is a guess at how a character would perform in a tournament setting I would almost never think a Doc or Pika will do very well unless it's Shroomed or Axe.

Peach is high tier 'cuz Armada retired so now if I'm gonna take a shot at Peach's tournament placement I'm gonna go with somewhere between 9th and exactly one spot above dead last depending on how good the Peach is.

i think there's a good discussion to be had about if and how armada's retirement will affect peach's placement, and whether it even should.
lolol I think it's absurd that this is even a thing. Peach does not suddenly become a worse character because her best player retired. I wish this community was able to think.

...what is "recent potential"? if you mean "how well the character has placed in tournament" you're really using "how good at the game are the players that chose that character" as a metric for how good the character is.

Marth hasn't done jack **** in tournament for YEARS, but people still put him in at least A tier

There is no reason why Armada's retirement will affect the tier list whatsoever. We have seen what Peach can do, we cannot unsee her capabilities now. There is no discussion...there is no reason why she will ever fall much at all (if she even does fall).

I'm curious as to how much Sheik has done in tournaments. When did she win anything really huge? Not that it means anything at all, because it doesn't, but I always read "x character doesn't do y things in tournament, so they're not that good" (the rationale behind Marth not being A tier for some people).

But we consistently place Sheik super high. If she's done well at some point in this game' history, let me know. I just see a disconnect in logic.
