I kind of prefer dubs only because I can watch the movie and do something at the same time

With subs I have to give all my focus on the thing I'm watching

I watched every season of Kamen Rider from Agito to Gaim and really liked them

But, at the same time It prevented me from working on projects while watching it

...which eventually lead to me having a bad habit of binge watching lately.

I used to only watch things to while working on projects

On the whole subs vs dubs thing, I think for me it depends on the medium and intent.

Basically if it's something where the message is supposed to outweigh the entertainment, I'll watch it in the original language, as lots of things tend to get lost in translation. If it's something for pure entertainment I'll likely go for something dubbed since it's less work, so to speak, and I just want to be entertained. :p

For example, if you haven't seen it, watch Life is Beautiful in the original Italian version. It's far better and more profound than the dubs, IMO.

So, finally, I am ready to talk about paper jam stuff :)

First, I will entirely use the info from this article:

http://www.perfectly-nintendo.com/m...al-website-open-details-videos-filesize-more/

Seriously, I might have been dumb to not get how conveniently made the article was (gonintendo didn;t helped in the first palce though......), but I still have to thank PushDustIn PushDustIn to remind me that it is bad to panic on ANY news and become stupid to not realise that i was going to do the exact same thign as the artuicle did (yes, I actually alrerady had images on my imgur and idk they were uploaded already).

For those who are slowpoking, this got live today:

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/aynj/index.html

Anyway, the point: this will be long so I will spoiler it.

Ok, i will go from top to bottom, but first, I need to mention again, JP, you are doing very neat stuff with the effects of site, but god they are overkill. The site has a responsive UI, but my IPhone took forever to load any page seriously, stop this nintendo JP.....

Filesize being 512 mb.....i was first questioned because 512 mb is quite low for a game, but this is a 3ds....let me just check how SS was....

SS was 4199 blocks (4100 = 500mb). Using google, it's approximatively 80mb less than SS. so........yeah there's not much I can tell on the filesize because SS goign to be very honest, I feel they wasted some memory for stuff that is.....weird. Like having 5 music stream for one thing, way too much generic sfx.....stuff liek that (I ripped the game so I kinda know what's in SS and some stuff are questionably there because they are generic). Can;t tell anything on the filesize, though let me see how much DT was for the lols:

.....6,789 blocks?

that's around 830 mb......that is however big relatively because it's 300 mb more.....DT did had a lot of graphics though.......

That's weird. I am not going to do any concern on it, but considering this game is mostly based on DT and I really liekd DT for what it was, it;s weird that it;s 300 mb less, but then again, the paper models doesn't take this much.......

Amiibo was known, but tbh, the cards feature doesn;t interest me much. Like, unless they actually do very crazy stuff, I don;t think it's soemthign that is gopign to be a must for that game.

The intro video tells us that idk why they didn;t put the effects for the colored stars in paper fashion, but I really spammed play and pause and so far, I saw toads of different colors mostly, goombas, koopas, paratroopas, shy guys, pirhana plant, hammer bros, spinnies......really?

......ok I expected more. As for not showing bowser / Peach / Mario, PushDustIn PushDustIn already told me the explanation by translating the famitsu stuff in basically saying that they came out the last one and there was a scene after (btw, it sounded like pm64 so i'll give it that if it was). The problem being.......well that's worrying that we know this so far because technically, that could be it......if it is the case, then I would be worried......

But yeah, nothing really new, only confirmation of hammer bros, spinies and shy guy in paper form.

.....oh yeah you could argue that we had yet to see Bowser jr.........yeah........ok well nvm the book doesn;t mean this much.....

The book is rather nice looking, you could argue it';s generic, but heck, so was the TTYD one in the intro (it was even more). Also, that book is not looking like SS. i just feel it has details that makes it something NOT from SS. idk, it really feels paper mario, but the artwork in in m&l style......so yueah, like the artwork.

To me, this pic gives a much better idea of how big Peach's castle is. Though, this is the beauty of the side view, I never felt this in the Pillo castle of DT because it was a top view so everything felt more...small if you want. Having a side view gives a lot of emphasis on the Y axix (the height of stuff) and also brings a lot mroe perspective effect. tbh, thsi shot shows me that this decision has the side effect of making the surrounding feel bigger. I thought they only did this to ahve the Paper stuff adequatly seen, but lookign at it, it has other advantages. So yeah, still love the side view :)

Is it me or paper jr is SO CUTE in comparison? SS, he was always on his ship and to be quite frank, he didn't looked this cute :)

^this is an excellent candidate for new avi, mine is an edited version of the one of the E3 site that i had to do some stuff, but this one has transparency already done......yay!

I jsut want to mention that they empahsis the folding properties of papers a lot. i know a lot of people felt that the way it was done in SS was overkill (and frankly it was), but let me get thsi stright: if you see it, it;s fine. If it gets repeated in the writting over and over, it;s not. And so far, I saw no issues with the writting (I only saw good stuff). So, jsut to keep in mind, if they go as far to do this in artwork, I woudl think it';s fine.

Actually, let me tell you something: even TTYD had generic attacks for known enemies. By this I mean a hammer bros will.......just throw hammer. That was his only job and he loved to do it. Forget bosses and OC here, for classic mario enemies, they jsut did what they were supposed to and that's fine.

SS tried to do that AND add paper stuff. i am goign tbh, paper jam makes me realise that SS did a great idea. to me, it's one of those things that they keep and they shoudl keep because even for barebone known enemies like goombas, it\s just another way to see them. So, if people think they emphases the paper too much, so far, they do really good on it. I just wanted to take the time to mention this because this is something that can make the battle system more diverse for both series.

THAT FOLD! Seriously, they are both cute, but wow paper peach is mcuh more cute :)

......nvm, this is my new avi so far, it;s better looking than the other :)

Just to mention that why the cactus can be destroyed? and even if it was, why woudl you do that?

to be continued.....

the following sounds.....weird:

"Trio Catch: Luigi and Mario use Paper Mario and stretch him in order to reach items"

Ok, first, i really am worried for the health of the poor paper :( Seriously, he got folded in the beginning and now he gets stretched to the point of being almost teared, c'mon :(

The only thing new for battles stuff is this:

Say whatever you want, but I personally think it looks badass :) Really love the attack paper mario does in the end and all he does after is adjust his hat, really keep his quirkiness :)

oh ok, the second toggle was JP alphabet toggle which doesn;t concern us, btu the target feature, tbh, I know a lot of people that woudl liek this considering how....a bit rough DT was. Though, having beat super star saga and ALMOST (didn;t wanted to beat the final boss and grind cause I was tired of battles at the end).......well I will certainly not leave it on unless the game is really cheap.

Btw, this might seem nothing that the site recommends to not run away too often, but let me remind you that MANY (me included) complained severely that SS never felt like that. Thanks paper jam for at least being a proper rpg :)

OH YES

I rrally wanted to have that artwork and it;s here!

I just love the style and Paper Mario behind :)

what is on the platform?

Just mentioning the quality of the shot and it;s paper mario hovering and now that i look at it, I lvoe that animation :)

STOP SHOWING THIS TO ME, IT;S SO SAD TO SEE! :(

Oh and this shot, look carefull, I see Starlow indicating tutorial. i also see the excellent indicating tutorial. i also see a cave indicating VERY new location.

But look behind, well ? blocks are confirmed and it took this long lol, but see the health block?

Yeah, tbh, i don;t recall to ever see this in m&l ever. the only I recall to have saw this is Paper Mario with the exception of spm. Notice hiow the block is 3 blocks wide meaning it is a team heal and the one thign I want to emphase with this is this never was in m&l, it is a straight mechanic from the paper mario series. This gives me hope tbh, I didn;t thought they would bring them back :)

Also, sign looks generic and m&l......I quite wanted TTYD sign :(

This location scream SS however, BUT, that world in SS was really good. So, it shoudl be fien on overworld :)

Seeing the spinies and also the battle map of probably the underground area I showed previously.

That;'s the first artowrk of him alone so felt posting it.....it is jsut what wou would except though. my only gripes is why they had to take the same SS vilains? I really hope more variety there tbh......

It REALLY looks nice. I really love the big hammer :)

OMG!

OMGOGMGOGMOGMOGMGOGMGOM

Seriously, this is BY FREAKING FAR, the best artwork of the game EVER. like, i am VERY tempted to put it as AVI, but then I want to keep it simple with the better paper mario one.........omg it's jsut.......ahhhhhhhhhhhh!

yes, the pose is different, but still having a neutral artwork is very nice to see, not sure if AVI, but maybe :)

holy, this one.....

Do I realyl have to explain it why it;s so awesome?

no? ok :)

This is new i think and I have no idea what it is......

ok that''s it, now my opinion piece.

Basically, there;s a lot of neat stuff, a lot of freaking awesome artwork, but I didn;t get away that feel that I am doubting the game might be generic. it's jsut the enemies and artstyle, i think it extracted good stuff from SS, but so far, idk why we know this little while the site was up.......i still am very cautious about this.

though, that's so sad that they hurt paper amrio like this with stretching :(

oh and we almost know nothing of the writting which is so far really good hence why I don;t think there was this much new, but i feel that so far, it coudl go either way. They could start from what we know now and go very deep or keep it this much generic. needless to say, I realy hope for the former......

Instead of dubs or subs, there is actually a third option

Completely remake the series for Western audiences and only use some clips of the original

AKA: Power Rangers vs Super Sentei

Sometimes it works...Sometimes you get Kamen Rider Dragon Knight.

Dragon Knight wasn't anywhere NEAR the quality of Ryuki

On dubbing.

I would encourage all of you to watch a French or Italian film in their original language.

Linguistic Determinism: language shapes culture, and culture shapes language. Change the language, and you change the cultural influences.

I will admit that some anime has superior dubs to the source material, Samurai Champloo and Code Geass come to mind, but as a rule of thumb, I'll watch something in its original language over a dub.
I get that and completely understand. However, like you said, the dub is sometimes better than the actual language. It's a preference to me and others and I like listening to my main language most of the time.

your comparison is piss poor and completely misses what i am getting at
You completely missed the point of my statement. It's something as simple as telling the difference between real life and a work of fiction. I would imagine that that the act of murder should be taken more seriously than an instance of an "underage" character being portrayed in a less than flattering manner. Excuse the sarcasm.

When put in the context of a video game, we're quick to justify it as "they aren't real, so it's fine," yet switch the situation from "murder" to "underage character in a bikini" and suddenly something just as fake is wrong when there's really no difference. There is no child just as there is no person being murdered, one is not more real than the other.

Hence the comparison to people who call out GTA for violence, it's nonsensical in either case because it's fictional.

Besides, in XC, Sharla, Melia and Floria all have costumes that are very fan service heavy but the difference is that those characters look much older and act much older.
See, I'm the type of player who got extremely, vehemently upset at XC when I equipped Sharla with heavy armor just to see what it looked like, and she practically stripped naked. HEAVY armor apparently means 'significantly less actual armor than what one would actually consider 'armor.'' Her light armor covered more of her body, for crying out loud.

To me, it comes down to a lot more than just what the character's wearing (or, rather, not). It isn't about censorship, it's about the way these getups kill the immersion. Skimpy costumes flat out devalue the character and his/her impact on the story (yes, I'm aware that XC at least has equally revealing armor for the men at times. Equal treatment is about the only thing keeping me from perma-ragequitting). It turns into a dress-up game in the most literal sense - the costumes are so laughably unrealistic that you can't even see these characters as real people anymore. They're dolls. You get into these cutscenes that are supposed to be full of emotion, drama, character building, personality... and you can't see any of it past all that unnecessarily bare skin.

Simply put, if you want me to take your story and characters seriously, you (the devs) need to take them seriously first.

Also Nintendo has that 'family-friendly' image to protect.

And it's not like they never handle the mature aspect of games and they still do but at the end of the day, Nintendo doesn't like to be in the media for stuff like that.

Remember Tomodachi Life controversy last year and what happen with FE Fates this year.

Nintendo realize doesn't want SJWs or even anyone complaining about the content in their games that don't relate to gameplay or the sales.
FF5, I can understand but XCX? That **** is never appropriate. I don't wanna see a 13 year old dressing as risqué as the 23 year old. That pisses me off. I have cousins and sisters that age, I don't wanna see that BS.

So year it's justified. And it's not anywhere near the Tharaja's 'unnecessary censorship'

Personally I was complaining about Project Zero/Fatal Frame, where the girl in question looks like your average Japanese 20 year old.

It was unnecessary censorship on an 18+ title.

In addition, the censorship of religious references in XCX irks me to no end. It's unneccesary, and it undermines the symbolism intended in the original title, and replaces it with "trying too hard to sound cool" names like that stupid name for the mechas: Skells.

And before people bring up that it was due to legal issues with the name Doll. It's still a cringe-worthy name change. Seriously? Skell? Why not Frame or Exo? Both woulda been fine.

Anyway, personally I'm opposed to censorship because I believe in freedom of thought. In forming your own opinions on your own terms. And having someone predigest things to determine what good or bad for you goes against all that. It's a principle, and though it might start with tiddies, it'll eventually get to worse and more serious stuff. See TTIP.
I almost 100% agree with you there (I still hate the term skell). However, the very act of communication often involves pre-digestion of facts in some form or another (word choice, mood, upbringing, personal views, conscious rewording in an effort to better convey an idea, etc). At the end of the day it's more about how badly(goodly lol) the information is predigested. Closest thing to getting undigested info is being there yourself, but current knowledge, personal views, and sometimes literal views will often intermingle with raw facts.

Information is never truly unfiltered. But there is as point where it's consciously taken too far

When it comes to video games, the idea of the "creator's vision" is extremely overrated. Video games are an interactive medium; the "creator's vision" no longer matters as soon as the player picks up the controller and decides what to do for themselves.

I certainly don't think that being able to see a girl who appears to have developed rather quickly in her underwear is a necessary part of a game like Xenoblade Chronicles X. I dislike censorship on principle because it's a slippery slope and an insult to consumer intelligence (more so when it comes to media aimed at an older audience).
Nothing wrong with disliking it on principle (I dislike it on principle), but practice is often more important. Heck, most people are against slavery but have little issue with prison labor. The last major criticisms to prison labor occurred between the early 30's and late 40's (yall should watch I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang) and current issues are more about the commercialization than the living conditions and treatment of the prisoners.

I tend to prefer dubs because they have variety in accents in their voices. Japanese dubs, while good, sound too Japanese sometimes. If A French guy is talking or a Russian, I want to hear their accent, not a Japanese one. Just my preference.

They should have censored that awful music instead.

And that's not even getting into his anime soundtracks (or the rest of the Xenoblade X OST).

(I'm not being too serious, though I do like Hiroyuki Sawano's music a lot.)

In regards to subs and dubs, I'm actually very used to listening to foreign languages, so it doesn't bother me at all to watch a show that isn't in my native language.

Watching American movies, anime and actually having been to foreign countries where different languages are spoken has helped in this regard.

Down on the corner, out in the street.
I tend to prefer dubs because they have variety in accents in their voices. Japanese subs, while good, sound too Japanese sometimes. If A French guy is talking or a Russian, I want to hear their accent, not a Japanese one. Just my preference.
Which is why I prefer the dub of Infinite Stratos no matter how much it may make me cringe lol :p

Or Hetalia for that matter.

I played some games where they did actually have the dialogue of the characters in the language of their nationality

I think it was Tekken?

Won't someone think of the poor pixels on a screen? What horrible atrocities could happen upon a fictional character.

Seems like the same logic some people use against GTA. It's murder, but it's fake, same thing here.
"It's murder, but it's fake."
"It's pedophilia, but it's fake."

These statements are NOT the same thing, even besides the fact that one is virtual, and the other is actually a moniker of an under-dressed, under-aged girl presented for your entertainment.

Sorry but not everyone sees things the same way as you do. Yes, it's fictional, but that doesn't give it a free pass. Pedophilia is completely gross and even in fiction, would not do well with the majority of people.

If you honestly think people feeling grossed out over a sexualization on a 13 year old character is something you "don't get" then I really don't know what to say. Your point about it being fictional is moot because fiction sometimes is there to inflict emotion. A character dies, the viewers will feel sad for example. Or when there's a happy ending, people smile.

But when you see a little kid getting sexualized (for the sake of otaku pandering), then it's going to make the audience feel largely uncomfortable and weird out. Do you REALLY question this line of thinking? It's perfectly normal for people to react that way which justifies the censorship in XCX. There is nothing to lose here by censoring unwarranted pandering crap on a little kid.

Is child porn worse? Far worse yes since real kids are involved, but does that make sexualizing fictional kids completely a-okay and acceptable for people in general? No it doesn't. A law to ban fictional things like that is a completely different subject, but it does at the very least give it enough justification to censor such material.

THIS especially. Sometimes I think a dub helps with characters because there's a likely chance of more variety in voices. Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy, Black Lagoon, and Baccano to name a few. I like this and why I prefer hearing dubs.

The whole thing is a prefrence thing anyway, I just don't like people who say you shouldn't listen to one or the other.

Samurai Pizza cats is one of the greatest dubs I've ever seen. It was completely different from the original show and yet had its own amazing charm.

I prefer subs because of general better audio quality
Dubs' quality is generally bad because you can't have someone do a better voice than the actor or actress themselves

But to say dubs are a bad thing is wrong

In Japan the legal age of consent is 13

Naked 13 year old there is not pedophilia, well...I dunno that 100% certainty

It's an extremely subjective subject that varies by culture and time period

Similarly, in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet is 13

I prefer subs to dubs, though I don't watch a lot of stuff. I mainly read mango.

IIRC, 13 is actually the minimal consent that a providence can have. I think the actual consent varies across providences. PushDustIn PushDustIn might know better than I do since he told me that the other day.

I don't imagine Mango's have much written on them

That's the only thing I could find, but it's not even a real mango

I've seen Pan's Labyrinth, it's a foreign language film and it's great, but even that could benefit from a dub because the average English speaking person is less likely to watch something with subtitles.
And this is why Americans are terrible at foreign languages.

La Vita es Bella is precisely what I was thinking of as I made that statement.

localization is not a bad thing. just watch the subs if you really have a problem with dubs. that option is always there for you

as for me, if theres a dub and its enjoyable to watch, high chances are that i'll watch it over the sub.
Well, bear in mind that I say this as a language teacher. Reason all my students suck at English is cause all films are dubbed to Spanish over here.

Can't watch the top three because... Sony won't allow it in my country? Weird.

That last one was good though, but I was talking about the lyrics. Pumpkin Hill level of cringe.

I completely understand, people have different thought processes and we don't all take things as easily as others. The censorship in X is justifiable in that regard, but I kind of initially jumped in thinking we were talking about Fatal Frame, my bad.

To me I find Dubs alright but if it gets like really bad then I'll switch to subs.

Now, if you want the greatest dub ever made, try this show called Ghost Stories because the original Japanese version is considered super terrible and overall awful with the writing pacing and characters so when it was brought over here to be dub the team was given full reign to do whatever they wanted and they had something stronger than anything they made.

The show feels like an Abridged series with a budget and not abridged

That girl has a really freaky looking face honestly

If that's the girl you guys are talking about perhaps it's better it's being censored

The way the director intended it is the way I'm going to experience it. Dubs are derivative, and I will always hold that derivative art should be experienced after the original. Derivative art can improve on the original, it can even supplant it, but the original is the original, and it should always be consumed first.

Manga and mango in Portuguese are written the same, so the pun works even better. Oh, and "manga" can also mean sleeve (as in, the sleeve of a shirt).

And this is why Americans are terrible at foreign languages.

Well, bear in mind that I say this as a language teacher. Reason all my students suck at English is cause all films are dubbed to Spanish over here.
Here in Portugal, only shows/films targeted to children are dubbed, with theaters also providing the option to watch it in the original language (with subtitles in Portuguese, of course).

Subtitles are the norm here. The majority of foreign works aimed at ages 6 or up (as in, the age group that is expected to know how to read) is shown in the original language subbed. This goes for theaters, TV broadcasting and so on. And yes, anime is shown in Japanese, though sometimes they use other foreign dubs (I remember watching anime in English or Spanish on TV as a kid).

Can't watch the top three because... Sony won't allow it in my country? Weird.

That last one was good though, but I was talking about the lyrics. Pumpkin Hill level of cringe.
I can watch them with no problem... Weird.

And yes, the music was produced by Sony Music Japan. Sawano produces music under the Sony Music label. Ironic considering the game is a Nintendo game, isn't it? Well, Nintendo and Sony only compete on the video game market, after all. In fact, the music for the Pokémon anime is also produced by Sony Music (though Sawano isn't the composer).

As for the lyrics, they're pretty much a staple of Sawano's work. His anime OSTs tend to have lyrics as well. They usually relate to the work he's composing for, actually. He collaborates with a lot of vocalists for his music. Some of them are kind of cheesy and sometimes the singers don't pronounce English too well, but some are actually pretty good sounding.
